SIAMSA Tire has won the ‘Best Newcomer’ award at Julie’s Bicycle Creative Green Awards on Monday night in London.

Julie’s Bicycle is a London based charity that supports the creative community to act on climate change and environmental sustainability.

Just last month, Siamsa Tíre became the first theatre in Ireland to achieve Creative Green Certification under a scheme run by London-based charity, Julie’s Bicycle.

Creative Green is the only international environmental certification scheme designed specifically for the creative and cultural industries.

In 2017, Siamsa Tíre decided to formalise and implement comprehensive Greening Policies. The first step was to increase energy efficiency and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

With generous funding from Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) under the BEC scheme, and our core funder the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Siamsa Tíre insulated the building, converted from an oil fired heating system to an Air to Water Heat Pump system and installed 40 photo-voltaic panels on the roof of the building.

It also replaced all of the building lighting and as much of the stage lighting as possible with LED lights. This was also supported by SE Systems, Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-operative (KSEC), Transition Kerry, Tralee Tidy Towns and Kerry County Council.

This year, staff working groups have been formed to start developing and implementing green policies across waste and water management, biodiversity, transport and travel as well as procurement.
