Sinn Féin Tralee MD councillors, Cathal Foley and Deirdre Ferris are calling on the Bird family to reconsider their decision to open for two weeks in Tralee this month.

Tralee area councillors were notified this evening about the decision by Birds to set up their amusements in the Harriers Site on the Dan Spring Road.

As the site is not publicly owned, KCC have no authority to prevent them from setting up.

Both Sinn Féin councillors feel that the rising numbers of COVID19 cases is concerning and nothing should be done to jeopardise the reopening of schools at the end of the month.

Cllr Ferris said; “We were informed this evening by council management that following discussions between them, the Gardai and the Birds family that the amusement company plans to set up in the Harrier Site in Tralee town for two weeks in August. They have listened to the council’s concerns and have agreed to close at the earlier time of 8pm. However, this does not assuage our concerns around large numbers of young people gathering in one location.

“It is clear now, after months of suppressing the virus with stringent measures and cooperation from the public, that the curve is now going in the wrong direction in many parts of the country. Kerry has managed to keep the number of new cases to a minimum and everything should be done to ensure the health and safety of people in the county. With the planned reopening of our schools later this month, it would be disastrous if this in any way jeopardised that.”
