TK Cougars 18 St Brendan’s 20

St. Brendan’s U12 Div. 1 team are now league and cup champions following a thrilling two point victory in over-time against TK Cougars was enough to clinch the league title.

After winning the cup last month with a 34-30 win over St. Bridget’s it was great to complete the double! In the end great defence and some super  offensive moves helped secure the win in over-time. Brendan’s got off to an unusually slow start and trailed 6pts to 1 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The second quarter got under way with an increased tempo and some great offense from Jack Doyle with 4pts and 2 pts each from Coren Hughes and Simon Carey was enough to pull the sides level before half time. Brendan’s really got their defence working in this quarter with some great rebounding and scores from Cian Griffin and Dean Farrell.

The 3rd quarter started with TK Cougars dominating under the boards on both ends of the court but some good scores from Edward Sheehy, Jack Doyle, Tom Flavin & Andrew Wallace kept the sides close.

The quarter ended with St. Brendan’s trailing by just 2pts. An exciting final quarter had both teams leading at various stages. An important score from Andrew Wallace had St Brendan’s in front but a late score from TK Cougars ensured the game was going to over-time. With both teams tiring in over-time there wasn’t much in the way of scores until Jack Doyle popped up to put St Brendan’s in front by 2.

TK Cougars went to the line to level but could only manage to score 1 of their 2 free throws. Team fouls shortly afterwards put Edward Sheehy on the line where he scored 1 of his 2 to seal victory on a score line of 20pts – 18. A special thanks from all at the club to coach Tony Griffin who has worked tirelessly all year to put together a great team.

St Brendan’s 31 St. Bridget’s 23
St. Brendan’s enjoyed a great win against the unbeaten St. Bridget’s in a highly competitive match up in Moyderwell. Our boys had good start to the game with Edward Sheehy point guarding and driving well to the basket for some good baskets.

Great defence from Donal O’Sullivan, Edward Sheehy and Cillian Litchfield helped the team keep St Bridget’s to just 7pts. Some good screens on offence allowed Andrew Wallace to score 2 good layups and finish the quarter with 6pts. Jack Doyle had St Bridget’s offence in lots of trouble and went to the free throw line 3 times in the 1st quarter.

The second quarter saw St Bridget’s bring on some of their bigger players which caused us some trouble but great defence from Cian Griffin, Jack Doyle and Simon Carey helped steady the ship. Coren Hughes made some great moves on offence and had an important score late in the quarter.

The third quarter started much like the first with good scores from Edward Sheehy and Andrew Wallace. Tom Flavin caught some great rebounds on defence and offence and a good score from Dean Farrell from the free throw line helped St Brendan’s to a 10 point lead to end the quarter.

St Bridget’s started to reduce the gap early in the fourth quarter with some great scores. Brendan’s had to step it up and did so with some excellent defence from Donal O’Sullivan, Simon Carey and Jack Doyle. A final score from Coren Hughes sealed a great victory. It finished St Brendan’s 31 – 23 St Bridget’s

Scorers on the night were:  Andrew Wallace 10, Edward Sheehy 9, Jack Doyle 5, Coren Hughes 4, Donal O’Sullivan 2 & Dean Farrell 1

St. Paul’s 40 St. Brendan’s 7

St. Brendan’s arrived at the Aura before the main doors had even opened on Sunday morning, perhaps a sign that they would be the more prepared and hungry team.  Quarter one was evenly matched and all about the offence and scores from Roan Delaney and Sean O’Neill of St. Pauls were matched by scores from Jason Moloney and David McCarthy.

The difference between the two teams was the basket each scored by Lawrence Guardiano and Adam Manley. In quarter two Brendan’s put a fierce press on Paul’s causing turnovers and seriously disrupting their offence. James Franklin and Ger Tansley hustled heroically in offence and defence. Moloney, McCarthy, Guardiano and Manley for Brendans put up 14 points with only 5 in reply from Paul’s.

The half ended 36 – 23 in favour of Brendan’s. They continued the press in the second half but Paul’s responded well getting a few fast break baskets. The same 4 scorers for Brendan’s put up 12 points but Paul’s outpointed them with 15. Roan Delaney scoring a three pointer just at the end of the quarter that was the difference.

Paul’s had narrowed the gap to ten 48 – 38. The final quarter was all Brendan’s as they really got into their stride. The faithful four put up 16 further points with super-sub Jack Costello notching up a further 7, including a lovely three pointer just near the end. Paul’s perhaps showing their fatigue at the end of a hard fought game as they could only manage a single basket in response and at the final whistle Brendans won out 71 – 40.

Players & scorers: David McCarthy 22; Jason Moloney 18; Adam Manley 10; Lawrence Guardiano 10; Jack Costello 7; Gerard Tansley; James Franklin

Gneeveguilla 47 St. Brendan’s 52

St. Brendan’s got a great start with Rap and James Fernane connecting to put Brendan’s up 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a more defensive affair with Jimmy O’Sullivan and Tadgh Reen huge on the boards. Peter Kerins kept the scoreboard ticking over with the first of his 2 vital 3 pointers and Cian Devine controlled the play and put Brendan’s in control of the game.

The start of third quarter Gneeveguilla showed why they are one of the top teams in the county and took a 6 point lead into the last quarter. Brendan’s got going again through Rap and Peter Kerins to steady the ship. St. Brendan’s captain Enda O’Connor stepped up to the mark to provide the driving force behind the Brendan’s victory, scoring at one end and stopping Gneeveguilla’s best player at the other.

Brendan’s prevailed on a final score of 52-47 to keep them on top of the league with just one game to go. A great team victory on the night and well done to all the squad.

Top scorers: Rap 16, James 14, Peter 11, Enda 8, Cian 2
