St. Brendan’s 108 TK Cougars 80

The Senior Men continued an impressive run of form when they defeated Killarney Cougars in the County League on Sunday in Moyderwell. Despite both teams having depleted numbers the game was an exciting spectacle with some very impressive individual performances from both sides.

The game was close for the first 3 quarters with Brendan’s struggling to contain Cougars American but with the traveling team getting into foul trouble the hosts eventually ran out comfortable winners 108-80.

Next up is a local derby with Tralee Imperials on Wednesday at 8pm in Moyderwell. This should prove to be an exciting game as both teams are trying to keep up with the pace of table toppers St. Marys who lead the league.

Boys U14 Div 3

St. Bridget’s 26 St. Brendan’s 41

St Brendans started strongly both offensively and defensively and sped to a 15pts to 8 lead by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Currow’s big number 12 caused difficulty for the Brendan’s defence, single handedly scoring Currow’s 10 points with Brendan’s only managing one basket through Sam McCarthy. Brendan’s went in at the half time break down by a single point.

In  the third quarter Brendan’s showed their resolve with Ryan McHugh taking on the task of curtailing Currow’s big man, holding him to just one basket in the quarter.  Meantime Garry Lynch and Graham Sheehy led the Brendan’s offence with 2 baskets each.

Brendans regained a slim lead with all to play for in the last quarter. Bridgets put on a full court press but Garry Lynch carried the ball assuredly feeding Graham Sheehy and Liam Kingston. Brendans were in team foul trouble early in the quarter however Brendans edged ahead a further 3 points.

Brendans defence, dependent now largely on stalwart Sam McCarthy, held tough.  Some quick and accurate passing saw Brendans get the upper hand on the Bridget’s defence.  Despite Ryan McHugh being fouled out with 3 minutes to go and Garry Lynch following 2 minutes later, Brendans kept scoring and finished a comfortable 41 points to Bridgets 26, a score that belied the close contest involved in the game.

Boys U12 County League

Tralee Imperials 15 St Brendan’s 32

On Monday night Brendan’s took on local rivals Tralee Imperials at Mounthawk Secondary School gym. A very strong opening quarter with scores from Jack Doyle (4), Andrew Wallace (2), Eddie Sheehy (2), Donal O’Sullivan (2) & Cian Griffin (2) saw Brendan’s take a commanding 12-2 lead into the second period.

The second quarter saw the introduction of an entirely different 5 players with Dean Farrell (2), Jack Doyle (2), Simon Carey (4) & Koren Huges (2) adding their names to the scoresheet. The third quarter saw Brendan’s intensity drop and this combined with a number of travelling violations and some unforced turnovers allowed Imperials a glimmer of hope. Baskets from Cian Griffin (2) & Andrew Wallace (2) the hosts at bay. However, Imperials hope was short-lived as scores from Dean Farrell(2), Andrew Wallace(2) & Jack Doyle(2) along with strong defensive performances from Donal O’Sullivan, Tom Flavin & Simon Carey in the final quarter saw Brendan’s prevail on a final scoreline of Tralee Imperials 15 St Brendan’s 32.

Koren Huges who despite sustaining a facial injury late in the 2nd quarter, made a vital contribution in the 2nd half. He could easily have been forgiven to have opted to sit out the remainder of the game but instead showed tremendous character and determination to continue
