Gneeveguilla 1-07 St Pats 1-10

St Pats claimed the two league points on offer in this County League encounter played in Gneeveguilla last Friday. The match threatened to boil over on a number of occasions with yellows and a red card being issued as well as a stamping incident that wasn’t dealt with accordingly.

This match could best be described as a game of two halves with St Pats, fresh from their victory last week, stormed out of the blocks from the throw-in with two quick points from “the brothers of destruction”, Kieran and Willie Hurley.

Gneeveguilla however levelled after 4 minutes of play with points from a Connor Herlihy free and Michael Murphy from play. From hereon in, St Pats dominated the rest of the half with the mercurial David O’Callaghan putting in a man of the match performance.

It was he who restored St Pat’s lead with a well taken point from around the 20 metre mark. St Pats goal came just after 10 minutes of play from excellent fielding by Liam Poff, releasing Gary Savage and three swift passes later, the ball was in the hands of dangerman, Kieran Hurley, who wasted no chance to finish low with his left foot past Patrick O’Riordan.

From the resultant kickout, the ball was again won by Liam Poff, who was having a great game and after a couple of passes later, Willie Hurley turned DJ Murphy inside out to point a beautiful left footer in what was the score of the half.

Points from Gneeveguilla’s Donal and Michael Murphy tried to restore some balance in the scoreline but the away side finished the half strongly to leave the halftime scores at Gneeveguilla 0-05 St Pats 1-09

Gneeveguilla started the second half determined to redeem themselves and from the first attack, the ball hit the upright only to fall kindly to Shane Crowley, who was left unmarked inside the square but John “Fizzy” Fitzgerald in goals for St Pats saved his goalbound shot with his right leg.

St Pats were put to the pin of their collars in this half and shortly afterwards, another combined save from dual player, Jordan Conway and Fizzy again denied the home side an opportunity to reduce the deficit. St Pats launched their own attack and a great ball in from Kieran O’Sullivan to Gary Savage went wide off the target.

The first point of the half was scored from a free, deep into the half by Kieran Hurley who was impeded by Timmy O’Leary.

The tussle between these two players eventually saw Kieran Hurley receiving his marching orders very late in the game, which also saw Donal Murphy getting a yellow card for a high challenge on Adrian Greaney. Another great save by the joint efforts of Fizzy and David O’Callaghan yet again prevented the home side another goal scoring opportunity.

However, Gneeveguilla were now attacking in numbers, trying to rescue something out of the game and were rewarded after a 3 v 1 situation left Mike Murphy to finally put the ball in the back of the net past Fizzy. There could have been more scores on the board but for astute defending from St Pats and wayward wides from both teams to leave the final scores at Gneeveguilla 1-07 St Pats 1-10

St. Pats: John Fitzgerald, Paudie O’Connor, Kieran O’Sullivan, Sean Dowling, Jordan Conway, Paul McMahon, Adrian Greaney, Liam O’Sullivan, Liam Poff, Luke Mulligan, Kieran Hurley (1-04,3f), Brendan Poff, David O’Callaghan (0-2), Willie Hurley (0-4), Gary Savage
