THE Kerry Hospice members and its volunteers will be out in force all over town on Friday and Saturday for their annual Sunflower Days fundraiser.

“We’re asking people to give their support and contribute a little,” said Chairman of the Tralee Branch of Kerry Hospice, Dan Galvin.

It’s all  for the next phase of the 15 bed in-patient unit at the palliative care unit.

“We have phase two of the new palliative care unit being designed at the moment and we hope to have construction underway in early 2015. It’s going to cost €5.5m and all money raised is going towards that,” said Dan.

“We’ve a meeting soon with the design team to finalise things and then we should be applying for planning in the next few weeks,” he said.

Dan said the development of a new unit is so important to enhance the care for patients.

“As it is, patients who need palliative care are scattered in different parts of the hospital and that’s not ideal, so at least in this dedicated unit they’ll be able to get better care. It’ll be easier for the patients and the care team,” said Dan.

Last year the Sunflower Day raised over €12,000 in town so let’s hope the people of Tralee come out in force to show their famous generosity again.
