The challenge saw 10 brave individuals set out on a challenge that saw them form a team and run two miles in each of the 26 counties in just 26 hours.

Funds raised by this innovative endurance challenge will go towards a new Fluoroscopy X-ray Unit for the Regional Centre for Gastroenterology at the Mercy University Hospital, which will assist doctors in staging and treating patients with tumours in the oesophagus, stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver.

In 2015, Brenda undertook another epic challenge, completing 12 marathons in eight months, raising €30,000 for the Mercy University Hospital, where her husband Pat was successfully treated for oesophageal cancer in 2014.

Speaking about the successful Back 2 Back Challenge, Brenda said; “Back 2 Back was a challenge that I was able to share with a core group of people who are as passionate about helping the Mercy as I am. Over the 26 hours we formed a strong bond, got a buzz as we arrived in each new county, ran in darkness, ran in light, and formed friendships that will last much longer than those 26 hours. I would like to thank those that joined me, as well as Paddy Wagon Tours, who kindly sponsored the bus and two drivers Freddie and Eduardo to bring us safely on our journey.”

Brenda was joined on Back 2 Back by Deirdre Finn, the Mercy Hospital Foundation; Geraldine O’Sullivan from Bantry; Aidan Quirke and Gearoid Buckley from Bandon; Moya Muldowney from Cobh; Veronica Fitzgerald from Togher; Noreen Cashman from Midleton; Joan Kennedy from Cashel; Liz Browne from Tipperary; and Freddie and Eduardo from Paddy Wagon Tours.

Brenda Doody from Curraheen will run two miles in 26 different counties in a 26-hour period on September 24 to raise funds for the Mercy Hospital in Cork as part of the Back 2 Back Challenge.

In May 2014 Pat was diagnosed by Mr Tom Murphy with oesophageal cancer, and underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy and had an oesophagectomy.

As a thank you to Consultant Mr Murphy and his team for helping her husband, Brenda committed to running 12 marathons in eight months, starting in March and finishing in October 2015, in order to raise funds for The Mercy.

Now Brenda is looking for people to join her on her journey with many other runners. Everyone will travel together by bus to each of the 26 counties where they will run 2 miles. The aim is to arrive back to Cork within the 26 hours and run the last two miles.

This challenge will raise funds for a new Fluoroscopy X-ray Unit for the Mercy Hospital’s Centre for Gastroenterology which will assist doctors in staging and treating patients with tumours in the oesophagus, stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver.

Every registrant must raise at least €350. The registration fee is €50 so a further €300 needs to be raised. To do this, the organisers recommend people create their own fundraising page so that friends and family near and far can sponsor them online.

It’s easy to do, follow this link to set up the online fundraising page: fundraise.mercyfundraising.ie/. You can also request a Mercy Hospital Foundation sponsorship card when registering.

Earlier this year, Brenda undertook the epic challenge to raise the staggering amount for the hospital, where her husband Pat was treated for oesophageal cancer in 2014.

Funds raised through Brenda’s marathon challenge will go towards funding research programmes in oesophageal cancer and expanding the minimally invasive cancer programme in the Mercy.

Mr Tom Murphy, Consultant in General and Oesophagogastric Surgery, led Pat’s cancer care team at The Mercy as he underwent a minimally invasive oesophagectomy in September 2014, after developing oesophageal cancer.

Before undergoing the seven-hour surgery, 45-year-old Pat received both chemotherapy and radiotherapy following the diagnosis in May 2014. Since then, Pat has recovered from the surgery and is back to work. Brenda was in fact joined for her penultimate marathon in Dingle in September by Mr Murphy.

Speaking about her challenge, Brenda said; “As a health and fitness instructor, I was used to 10k runs and half-marathons, and thought this fundraiser deserved a bigger commitment, so I started with Tralee, which was followed by Connemara, Limerick, Cork, and Waterford. I tackled Killarney in July, and four marathons in as many days in Donegal in August. My challenge culminated with Dingle in September, where I was joined by Mr Murphy, and Dublin in October, where Pat joined me and ran the final marathon with me which was just fantastic. I really wanted to do this for the Mercy as Mr Murphy and his team were amazing, and I felt the least I could do was to raise as much money as possible for research at the hospital.”

Congratulating Brenda, Mr Murphy said; “Brenda’s fundraising venture recognised the tremendous hard work of the multidiscplinary cancer team in the Mercy University Hospital and I am very proud to be working with such a dedicated team. It was an honour that I was able to join her in running over the hills of the Dingle peninsula in September on her epic challenge, and I thank her most sincerely for her dedication.”

A TRALEE woman was honoured by The Mercy University Hospital on Friday for her fundraising efforts for the facility.

Brenda Doody from Curraheen was among the individuals, teams, and fundraising volunteers who go the extra mile for patients and colleagues at The Mercy University Hospital, officially recognised at The Mercy Stars awards night which was held in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Cork.

Brenda was named The Mercy Stars Hero of the Year, recognising her for the marathon challenge she took on earlier this year following her husband Pat’s cancer journey at the Mercy.

In May 2014 Pat was diagnosed by Mr Tom Murphy with oesophageal cancer, and underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy and had an oesophagectomy.

As a thank you to Consultant Mr Murphy and his team, Brenda committed to running 12 marathons in eight months, starting in March and finishing this October, in order to raise funds for The Mercy.

Today Pat is recovering well and Brenda is coming up to her last marathon having raised a phenomenal €21,000 to date.

The Mercy Stars, organised by the Mercy Hospital Foundation and The Mercy University Hospital, celebrate the people who, through their fundraising efforts, make things a little easier for patients, who help the Foundation invest in new technologies to ensure that The Mercy is at the forefront of the effective diagnosis, treatment and care of Mercy patients.

The awards also recognise the hospital staff, who in the eyes of patients, colleagues, peers and managers, make life better in the Hospital on a day to day basis.

Sponsored by KBC, and supported by Keanes Jewellers and Carry Out Blackpool, The Mercy Stars is one of the most highly anticipated events on the Mercy’s calendar.
