AUSTIN Stacks kept their county league title ambitions on track with a win over arch rivals Kerins O’Rahillys at Connolly Park on Saturday night on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-5.

O’Rahillys were without all their key players through injuries, holidays and Kerry duty and found it tough going against a Stacks side who effectively ended the Strand Road team’s chances of a top two place.

Austin Stacks had the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and they notched up three points before a fine goal from Kevin Walsh levelled matters.

That was the only score O’Rahillys managed in the first half though and Stacks’ superiority showed with four more points before the break, with the scores 0-7 to 1-0.

The contest was all over 12 minutes after the restart when the home side had five unanswered points before Strand Road’s first point of the game on 43 minutes.

They traded three points apiece until Jack Morgan struck a goal for Stacks with four minutes left to seal the deal. The Rockies now go joint top of the league with two games left. A home victory over Kilcummin and a win away against Templenoe are needed to guarantee a County Final place. Scroll down for match action…

PHOTOS: Six-Goal Thriller Decides County League Final

Gavin O’Connor was in Killarney yesterday to see Austin Stacks and Dr Crokes do battle in the Credit Union County League Final 2015…

DR CROKES had too much firepower for Austin Stacks who battled hard in this pulsating deferred 2015 Credit Union County League Division 1 Final at Lewis Road.

The foundation of this Crokes victory was built on a 1-3 to no score lead which they gained inside the first ten minutes. Austin Stacks almost pulled off a remarkable comeback midway through the second half – when trailing by seven points, The Rock hit the net twice inside a minute.

But such was the day, the Killarney side had all the answers and they hit 1-3 without reply to quell the Rockie resurrection.

The match was an open expansive affair played at a terrific pace for this time of year.

A competitive contest as ever from these two, for the final ten minutes, Dr Crokes were reduced to 13 men and Austin Stacks to 14, following  scuffles that broke out in the aftermath of those two quickfire Rock goals.

A goal from captain Eoin Brosnan set the Crokes on their way to jump into a commanding lead. On ten minutes, Sean Ryan, who came in for the badly missed David Mannix, was the first Stacks man to on the get scoreboard when he pointed.

Greg Horan added another to settle things down as Stacks began to come into the game more.

But, Crokes, had the right response and shot over three of their own from Fionn Fitzgerald, Chris Brady and Kieran O’Leary, who was making his first start since rupturing his Achilles tendon last June.

With five minutes left in the half, Stacks got themselves back in the game.

Donaghy, who was man marked by Eoin Brosnan, was causing trouble operating around the square. He set up midfielder Micheal O’Donnell who netted his first of two goals and brought his side back to within a score, 1-6 to 1-3.

When required, Crokes, could up the gear. They responded scoring 1-2 without reply to shove the lead out once again to seven points by the end of the half, which ended 2-9 to 1-5.

It was telling that in the half, all of Dr Crokes forwards had a score to their name.

Stephen Stack made changes at the break bringing on the side’s top scorer last year, David Mannix, and he made an instant impact when he hit the first point of the second half.

The sides went point for point and end to end, until the 15th minute when Michael O’Donnell goaled once more and Shane O’Callaghan hit another goal a minute later.

The Rock’s tails were now up having reduced the deficit from seven points to one after two attacks. But the wind was taken out of their sails after fights broke out around the pitch.

The game was stopped for five minutes while referee, Brendan Griffin, got his house in order. The stoppages killed any Rockie momentum.

Dr Crokes, got the next two points and substitute  Jordan Kiely, put the game to bed when he scored the Crokes third goal of the afternoon to stretch their lead out to six once more with seven minutes on the clock.

Having mounted two comebacks that cut into big Crokes leads, Austin Stacks just didn’t have a third one in them.

John Mitchels 1-15

Spa 1-15

TWO unanswered points well into stoppage time in extra time by Spa, means both sides will have to go again for a place in this year’s Division 1 of the County League.

John Mitchels James Duggan was the star of the show, scoring 1-5 from play and 1-8 in total at a blustery and bleak Brosna on Sunday afternoon.

Coming into the final 15 minutes of the second-half in normal time, it looked like the Tralee side had done enough, but Spa pulled the game back scoring five on the bounce to force extra-time.

Mitchels were just about the better side, they will rue missing two handy chances in front of goal in the dying moments of the 60 that would have surely seen them over the line.

A huge factor in the match was a strong gale that perpetuated throughout. The Tralee side, opted to play with the breeze in the first half after winning the toss.

The advantage showed, they kicked eight points in the half. Spa got a vital goal with three minutes left from Craig Hickey, to keep them in touch.

In the final minutes of the half, Spa were cut open on three occasions where the ball was unlucky not to finish to the net – one of them a cracker of a shot from the outside of the boot by George Bastible, which rattled the post.

The half finished John Mitchels 1-6, Spa 1-3.

Now it was the turn of the East Kerry side to gain the wind advantage, but it was Mitchels who had the better of Spa on the scoreboard. That was until Shane O’Connor got his marching orders for a tackle off the ball on 49 minutes.

Confusion reigned as referee, Brendan Griffin, first produced a black card, then a red. O’Connor walked off and Mitchels were down to 14.

With the wind and momentum now behind Spa, they began to attack the Mitchels goal. Midfielder Andrew Garnett was getting the better of things around the middle and the industrious Evan Cronin was proving a handful.

Bit by bit, Spa clawed back the lead and a point with two minutes left from the excellent Michael O’Donoghue, brought the game to extra-time.

The match finished 1-10 apiece.

With Mitchels returning to the full complement of players, Spa once more had the benefit of the breeze for the first half of extra time, which finished with Spa one point in front – Michael O’Donoghue putting them ahead for the first time since the 16th minute.

Mitchels made a switch, putting half back Stephen O’Mahony, who was seeing a lot of ball, into the forward line and it instantly paid off. O’Mahony scored a point a minute into the final half of the match.

A point by James Duggan and another from Alan O’Donoghue, put Mitchels ahead by two once more.

It looked like Mitchels were going to do it, but unfortunately for them, a melee that stopped the game for seven minutes put a halt to their gallop.

Ugly scenes developed outside the Spa dugout with both teams involved and even, at one stage, a few supporters.

It got so bad that it looked as if Spa manager, Pat Cronin, was calling his players off the pitch, but finally order was restored and we were in for a nail biter of a finish.

With the match well into stoppage time, Spa fought hard to claw it back. Mike Foley brought it to within a point and with the last kick of the game, Shane Cronin fired a shot off the inside of the post and over the bar.

Mitchels will feel they left this game behind them, but credit must be given also to Spa’s battling spirit.

The replay will be played, Sunday, January 24 at 1:30pm. Venue to be confirmed.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s 1-15

Austin Stacks 0-12

KERINS O’RAHILLY’S claimed a six point victory in the latest instalment of Tralee’s ‘Old Firm’ derby.

The win is Kerins O’Rahilly’s  first in five games in league and championship against their great rivals.

The Rock were without eight players who started their All-Ireland semi-final last February and they were dealt a further blow when Ronan Shanahan had to be stretchered off towards the end of the first half, looking to be in a lot of distress.

Strand Road were well worth this home victory with two half forwards, David McLaughlin and John O’Connor, along with defender Danny O’Sullivan, being the stand out performers.

For Stacks, despite being on the losing side, David Mannix continued his recent good form by kicking some exceptional long range points.

The game started in free flowing fashion, with O’Rahilly’s having the better of the opening exchanges, after ten minutes they lead by five points to one.

With the scores at 0-8 to 0-3, O’Rahilly’s were lucky to retain their full 15 after Giles O’Grady retaliated to a dubious high shoulder from John Dennis.

Unfortunately for The Rock, the referee didn’t see it and no action was taken.

The sides went in at half-time with the scores 0-9 to 0-4 in favour of Strand Road.

In the opening ten minutes of the second half, Stacks outscored their opponents by three points to one, the pick of the bunch a lovely long range effort by Mikey Collins out on the sideline.

O’Rahilly’s replied to The Rock’s resurgence, with a devastating move carved out by the ingenuity of David McLaughlin and John O’Connor. The two hooked up with some lovely one two passing, culminating with McLaughlin blasting the ball to the net.

The goal put O’Rahilly’s seven points up and despite the efforts of David Mannix, The Rock lacked the leadership and firepower to mount any credible come back and as such the game fizzled out.

The defeat will worry the Austin Stacks faithful who have seen players leave in their droves all summer. How they would wish to have them back to face Crokes in two weeks time in the county championship.

For O’Rahilly’s, the win will boost their confidence that they can get their season back on track and dispatch Miltown/Castlemaine in the losers round of the championship.

AUSTIN STACKS have added a county league title to their 2014 haul by beating Dr Crokes in the deciding match of last year’s campaign.

Extra time was needed for the Rock to get one over their great rivals from Killarney, who, with Colm Cooper back in their ranks, could not stop the black and amber winning machine.

It was celebrated with gusto by the Rock faithful as Dr Crokes seemed to have the beating of Stacks in decisive games over the past few years.

An own goal by Crokes, defender Mike Moloney, in extra time was the deciding moment in a game where tempers came to the boil on a few occasions.

Shane Carroll gave a man of the match display, kicking six points, including three on the bounce at the end of normal time to keep the Rock in the match.

Stacks got off to a flyer with a goal inside ten seconds by Kieran Donaghy. ‘The Star’, got onto a long punt from Barry Shanahan and flicked the ball to the net.

It was a scrappy sort of a match, with some of the niggle you would expect from a Tralee v Killarney encounter.

The first half ended with Stacks leading by two points, 1-3 to 0-4, but it could have been more had Shane O’Callaghan, converted a penalty on 20 minutes after Donaghy was pulled to the ground.

Dr Crokes, flew out of the traps at the start of the second half and were the better side in this period. Crokes led by three points with seven minutes remaining. This is when Carroll scored three terrific points, one after another, to force extra time.

With the light beginning to fade and with the last play of the first half of extra time, Shane Guthrie drove in a ball into Donaghy only for the Dr Crokes full back, Mike Moloney, to fumble the ball to the net.

Try as they might, Dr Crokes, just couldn’t break down the Stacks defence who sat on their lead impressively to became the 2014 Credit Union County League Champions.

Austin Stacks v Dr Crokes

Connolly Park, 7pm

DUE to Austin Stacks incredible run through the Munster club championship in 2014, last year’s scheduled league final against Dr Crokes had to be postponed.

It was decided at the start of the year that instead of having a one off match for the title that this year’s league fixture between the two would double up as the final.

It’s quite possible – once their paths don’t clash on  the way – this Saturday we could be witnessing a dress rehearsal for this year’s county championship final.

Playing for a trophy, there is a little more on the line than can usually be expected at this time of year.

Both sides have dominated Kerry football over the past five years. Crokes have held the upper hand with their four in a row county championship, before Stacks swooped in for what the Killarney men might call “our year off”.

For Crokes, a year without Gooch meant a year without the Kerry crown they had come a bit too accustomed to wearing. Colm Cooper has returned now, refocused and re-energised. It’s hard to not back them to glory once more.

Austin Stacks will, of course, think otherwise, they are a side who revelled in the underdog tag last year. A Dr Crokes team with the favourites tag is more motivation to go and prove themselves all over again.

Build up for this has not been ideal for the Rock. They lost they’re midfield partnership of Greg Horan and Wayne Guthrie to the US for the summer, along with young defender Conor Jordan and goalkeeper Darragh O’Brien.

Crokes, on the other hand, have bolstered their stellar line up of Fionn Fitzgerald, Kieran O’Leary and Dathi Casey with the return of the aforementioned Cooper and the continued improvement of young attacker Micheal Burns.

Between the two sides, Crokes have the better league form winning all their games thus far.

In the club championship, Crokes destroyed St Micheal’s Foilmore by 36 points. The freakish scoreline giving us an indication that they are not messing about and feeling too merciful this campaign.

You just feel coming into this match, Crokes will want it more. Coupled with the loss of those four Stacks players and the head of steam Crokes are picking up it’s difficult to not see them win.

In no way though is this a forecast for the season.  The Stacks are resilient and will find an edge to challenge again for top honours and unlike this Saturday’s match, hopefully in the ‘proper’ year.

Verdict – Dr Crokes by 5 points

PHOTOS: County League Round-Up – Stacks Falter While O’Rahilly’s Put Up A Big Score

 Boyles stove insert 2

IT was a mixed bag for Tralee area sides in the county league, with the big winners being Kerins O’Rahilly’s and John Mitchels who are riding high in their divisions. Below are brief reports and scroll to the bottom to check out photos from yesterday’s action…

Division 1

Kerins O’Rahilly’s 1-20 – 0-4 St Micheal’s/Foilmore

It was plain sailing for O’Rahilly’s in Strand Road as they destroyed the south Kerry men by 19 points.

After cruising past Finuge in similar fashion last week, O’Rahilly’s were relentless without their county men, David Moran, Barry John Keane and Tommy Walsh who watched from the stand.

In their absence, Jack Savage and in particular, Cormac Coffey, who is turning out to be a serious prospect, led the charge. In fact Foilmore only registered a solitary point in the second half such was the work rate of the O’Rahilly’s.

The game was very much done and dusted when corner forward, Cian Sayers hit the net emphatically late in the second half.

Kilcummin 1-6 – 0-6 Austin Stacks

The Rock’s senior footballers lost their first game on Kerry soil in almost a year on Saturday evening in a stormy Kilcummin.

The elements did make for good football and that is reflected in the low score of the match. A fairly strong Stacks side, with the likes of Shane O’Callaghan, Shane Carroll and David Mannix, had the benefit of a strong wind in the first half, but couldn’t make it count.

One of Stacks’ few scores in the second half came from the boot of Pa McCarthy who blazed a penalty over the bar. So, a disappointing start to the league campaign.

Division 2

Tarbert 0-8 – 0-14 John Mitchels

Aided by a strong breeze in the second half, Mitchels make it two out of two in Division 2.

Mitchels had put themselves in a great position at the end of the first half, going in ahead knowing they would have the wind at their backs in the second period.

Alan O’Donoughue was once again in terrific form for Mitchels as he finished the game with 8 point haul that went a long way in securing a deserved victory. Mitchels now occupy second spot in the table, level on points but behind Kenmare on score difference.

Division 3

Ballymacelligott 2-7 – 1-7 St Pats

Ballymac got off the mark in the league as they registered a victory against local rivals St Pat’s.

St Pat’s got off to a flying start with a goal from Gary ‘’Lar’’ Savage. The turning point in the game came when former Kerry senior player, David O’Callaghan was forced off because of injury, a minute later, Ballymac hit the net and tool a lead they would never relinquish.

This was a tight and tough game, one which Ballymac fought hard to win.

Division 3

 Na Gaeil 0-14 – 2-9 Beale

Na Gaeil slumped to a second defeat in as many weeks losing on home soil to a hard working Beale side.

The North Kerry champions had the benefit of the driving wind in the first half and made it count, going in at the break seven points ahead, 1-7 to 0-5. The fight came at the start of the second half when Na Gaeil scored seven unanswered points to claw themselves back into contention.

The winning of the game came when Beale got what would be their solitary score of the second half – a goal. Na Gaeil tried in vain but they couldn’t get one score to scrape a draw.

Division 5

Austin Stacks B 2-9 – 1-9 Ballyduff

The Rock’s B team got off the mark in division 5 with a home win against Ballyduff.

David O’Sullivan and Dale Counihan hit the net for Stacks which helped them on the way to secure two points, Counihan’s goal in particular catching the eye.

In the first half Stacks played into a strong wind, but led by two points at the end of the half, the scores 1-4 to 0-5.

Ballyduff battled late on, but in the end Stacks ran out deserved three point winners.

PHOTOS: GAA Round Up – Walsh Excels For Blues While Mitchels And St Pat’s Win

IT was the opening weekend of the Credit Union Senior Football League which saw Tralee town and area teams in action at home and around the county.

Below are brief reports and scroll to the bottom to check out photos from yesterday’s action…

Division 1
Finuge 0-8 – 3-17 Kerins O’Rahilly’s

Tommy Walsh, kicked a total of 1-6 from play as Kerins O’Rahilly’s cruised to an emphatic victory against a Finuge side without the services of Paul Galvin.

The former Sydney Swan, played the game at full-forward causing havoc for the North Kerry men who couldn’t get a handle on Walsh who kicked some fine scores from left and right along with having a hand in others.

Another returning player, Con Barrett, also impressed fielding some excellent ball in midfield alongside his partner David Moran. There will be tougher tests to come, but Strand Road will be pleased with their flying start to the league campaign.

Division 2
John Mitchels 0-10 – 0-06 Templenoe

Mitchels rally of points in the second half saw them past Templenoe in Ballyseedy.

Three points without reply from Alan O’Donoghue, Sean Moloney and Ciaran Deane, was the cushion which made sure Mitchels got the new campaign off to a winning start.

It was Mitchels also who had the better start to the game scoring three on the bounce, two from Alan O’Donogue and one from Sean Moloney.

On the day, Mitchels can be very thankful of goalkeeper Dermot Raggett who made two fantastic saves with the South Kerry men left to rue a few goal chances.

Division 3

St Pats 1-12 – 1-10 Na Gaeil

These two newcomers to Division 3 came up against each other for the first round game.

It was a hard fought victory for St Pat’s who will be glad to get off the mark early having been relegated from division 2 last year. Na Gaeil moved the other way, but despite a late goal couldn’t get one over on the Blennerville side.

At half time Na Gaeil lead by 0-7 to 0-6 points, after soaking up some pressure at the start of the second half St Pat’s took the initiative when Gary ‘Lar’ Savage’s punched the ball to the net.

With ten minutes to go St Pats kicked three unanswered points from David O’Callaghan, Kieran Hurley and Eoin Sayers. Na Gaeil rallied late with Ian McCarthy’s goal sparking the revival, but time ran out and St Pat’s were victors by two.

Keel 1-12 – 1-6 Ballymacelligott

Four unanswered points by Keel towards the end of the match left Ballymacelligott in the dust.

The game had started well for Ballymac, with Vinnie Horan hitting the net for his side. The sides would then go on to trade points. The home side’s influence soon began to show, the half ending 1-6 to 1-6 in favour of Keel.

Ballymac came out fighting in the second half playing their best football in the third quarter pulling the game back to within two points of the Mid-Kerry side.

This moved Keel into action kicking four points on the bounce to win by a six point margin.

Division 4

Churchill 1-7 – 1-9  Cordal

Churchill will be disappointed as they get off to a losing start in division 4.

Staying with their opponents at the beginning, they were hit a blow right at the end of the first half when Cordal scored a goal to go in at the break 1-5 to 0-4 ahead.

At one stage in the second half Cordal led by seven points with Kerry senior panel member Phillip O’Connor in fine form.

Soon though, Churchill began to eat in to that lead, although fortuitously when the Cordal keeper made a howler dropping the ball into his own net.

An comeback was on the cards, when Ivan Parker scored from play to pull the deficit back to one, but it wasn’t to be, with Cordal, aided by some sloppy indiscipline from the Churchill rearguard, seeing the game out by a margin of two points.

Division 5

Sneem/Derrynane 3-6 – 1-6 Austin Stack B

A second half collapse by The Rock’s second string meant they came back from the trip down south empty-handed.

Aided by stalwart, William Kirby, in midfield, Stacks went in at half time five points up, 1-4  to 0-3.

In the entire second half, the Rock only registered two points, while their South Kerry opponents hit the net three times to take the points.

It was a shaky start to life back in the senior league for the B’s after an absence of 22 years, but still they will find something to build on and may have some more well known names run out for them over the course of the year.

THE County Football League fixtures draw has taken place for 2015 with round one scheduled to take place March 22.

The round 4 clash on May 10, between Austin Stacks and Dr Crokes will double up as the 2014 League Final.

Last year, Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahilly’s both consolidated their spots in Division 1 without too much fuss.

The Stacks were unbeaten in the competition while O’Rahilly’s were also on a similar path before they lost 11 players to emigration during the summer.

In Division 2, John Mitchels avoided the drop while St Pats weren’t as lucky.

The Blennerville side’s relegation means there will be three Tralee area teams in Division 3 this year. Joining St Pat’s, will be Na Gaeil who were promoted and Ballymacelligott who will spend another season in the division.

All-Ireland junior finalists, Ardfert will also play in Division 3. Churchill will play their football again in Division 4.

Austin Stacks will be doubly represented as their B team will play in Division 5.

Check out the full list of fixtures below for Austin Stacks A and B, Kerins O’Rahilly’s, John Mitchels, St Pat’s, Na Gaeil, Ballymacelligott and Churchill…
