MINORS:

We had a good draw away to Churchill on Tuesday last (5th April) in our final round of the Co League on a score of 2-11 to 2-11. We had the advantage of a strong wind in the opening half but only went in at half-time leading by 2-5 to 2-3. Our goals were both well taken by Gary Howard and Conor Hurley.

We looked to be facing a difficult task after Churchill drew level in the opening minutes of the 2nd half, but we played some great football into the strong wind for the remainder of the game to secure an important draw. Pat Kearney had an outstanding game and was well assisted in the backline by Mark Ryle and Eoin Barden. Conor Hurley and Jack Myers were hugely influential in midfield, while up front Gary Howard, Mikey Walsh and Ger Tobin impressed.

Team: Dylan O Shea, Mark Ryle, Darren Daly, Aaron Pitman, Eoin Barden, Pat Kearney, Conor Hurley (1-2) Jack Myers, Darcy O’Sullivan, Mikey Walsh (0-5), Johnny Downey, Gary Howard (1-1) Owen Breen (0-1) Ger Tobin (0-1) Joe Griffin (0-1) Darrion Hurley

We have now qualified for the semi-final of the Co League where we will be away to Churchill, date to be confirmed.

U14 LADIES:

We began our U14 Co League last Sunday v Firies in Ballyseedy last Sunday. Played in ideal conditions our first game of the year in the Co League started off at a fast pace and 4 points from Rachel Kilgallen gave us an early lead. Both teams exchanged scores and half time score Mitchels 0-4 Firies 1-2.
Second half Mitchels pushed hard and were rewarded with 2 goals by Ruth Moriarty. Firies pushed hard for scores but excellent defending by captain Julie Foley and Erica O Connor and great goalkeeping by Kerry Oba kept Firies at bay. Late in the game we conceded a goal after intense pressure. Final score Mitchels 2-4 Firies 4-2. Well done girls you never stopped trying.

We had a good victory at home to St Pat’s in the town league on Wednesday last, winning on a score of 2-13 to 1-6. Our goals were both well converted by Joe Griffin and Dillon O’ Connor. Our defence was strong throughout with impressive displays from Eoin Barden, Darren Daly and Aaron Pitman. Conor Hurley and Jack Myers were dominant in midfield while up from Ger Tobin and Mikey Kelliher caused plenty of problems for the Pats defence.

U-10s:
We had a great day last Sunday at our annual Sylvia Mason Tournament with the Under 8’s and Under 10’s mixed, we had four teams of 13 playing and the quality of play was superb from everyone.

After the first game the teams lined up behind the piper and they all marched in step and then stood for the National Anthem. All the games were very close with only a couple of points between any of the teams.

At the end we had two Finals which were hotly contested with all teams showing a full range of skills and some great scores. When the final whistle blown we had winners, just about, and the captains claimed their prize on behalf of their teams, Jack O’Flaherty receiving the Plate Trophy and Darragh Cunnane receiving the Sylvia Mason Trophy.

Well done to all players and their Managers for the day you did a great job.
That is the end for football training for this year and we hope you had a good year and enjoyed yourselves. For those going on to U12s we wish you the best and for those Under 10 again next year we will see you in the new Year sometime…..Watch out for texts!! U14 Ladies:
We played Na Gael last Wednesday evening in Killeen on a windy but dry evening. Both sides lined out with full squads and it was Na Gael who won the toss and played with the strong wind in the first half.
From the throw in Na Gael launched the ball into the ful forward line and were 2 goals up inside the first 10 mins. Mitchels were struggling to get the ball out of defence and midfield. A load of switches helped ease the pressure and we finally got going around the field with tireless work from Rachel Kilgallen, Julie Foley and Simi Ogungbsa leading to several scoring chances which we squandered. Ava Buckley scored a goal and 2 points to ease the score. Half time 3-3 to 1-2.
In the second half Mitchels improved with Erika O’Connor, Oonagh McGrath and Lisa Costello defending well final score John Mitchels 3-7 Na Gael 6-6.
Our last game in North Kerry v Ballymac is due to be played shortly but is delayed over the All Ireland this weekend and the Ladies training continues on Thursday 6-7 pm .
Town league v Strand Road September 30th at home.

Under 16 Boys:
Our next round game will be in a few weeks – away to Kilgarvan/Tuosist.
Training plan will be published next week.

U-12 BOYS:
Team 1 & Team 2 played Ballymac in the Castleisland District on Wednesday night last. Team 1 were very unlucky not to come out on top losing by 4 points on the night. Best for Mitchels were Conor Commane and Dan Bowler.. Team 2 were also beaten on the night by a stronger Ballymac side. Best for Team 2 were David O’Callaghan and Darragh Cournane.

John Mitchels U12 game last Friday night vs Castleisland was cancelled due to lack of numbers for the Mitchels as they couldn’t field a team.
Training continues on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

U 10 Boys
We went to the Castleisland Blitz last Sunday and put in some great performances. We won all our games bar one with splendid performances from players like Darragh, Ciaran, Paddy and Andrew. Most of our games were team performances with everyone giving their all and our team showed that when we play well together we can beat most. Along the way to the finals we beat Ballymac, Castleisland and Scartaglen just to mention a few. As the finals approached it started pouring but it didn’t put us off and team A proceeded to beat Ballymac with help from Cian, Ben, Sean and Rory and the rest of the boys. The plaque was presented to Darragh to great applause from all the players. As this game was going on Team B was playing in another final against Brosna and even though Cathal, Ted, Sean Og, Joe, Cian, Ben and the rest of the lads played their hearts out we came up a little short.
Well done to all the lads as they showed they are really developing into fine footballers.
Training continues next Sunday at 10.30 a.m.

Session With
Diarmuid Cunnane

Profile: Diarmuid Cunnane
Manager John Mitchel’s Boys under 14 team.
John Mitchel’s Senior Player from /to: 2001-2012
Player Position: Full Back/Right Corner Back

(Q): Which player(s)/club personality did you look up to as a Juvenile/Senior player?
(A): “Growing up, the leading lights would have been Timmy O’Dowd and John Higgins. Both players were on the Kerry team. At that time Kerry football was at its peak having recorded both four & three in a row All Ireland titles. To have two John Mitchel’s players involved was special. When I started playing at senior level Anthony Gleeson was a player that stood out by a mile. Fergus O’Connor was another player that always gave one hundred per cent. I myself have played with a number of the current team and Brendan O’Mahony would be a great example to any young player. Brendan is rarely if ever beaten on the pitch and gives everything in a game”.

(Q): What has been your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s Senior player?
(A): “For me it was a great accomplishment to play senior football. I stopped playing at minor level as I was working up the Country. When I returned to Kerry, John Creagh was in charge of the Senior team and he got me involved. In 2007, I was made team captain which was a very humbling experience for me”.

(Q): What do you believe you brought to the team as Captain?
(A): “At the start it was a bit daunting but I eased into the job after a while. I suppose I’d like to think that I lead by example in both training and games. I have to say I enjoyed my role as team captain”.

(Q): If you change a rule in Gaelic football what would that be?
(A): “Initially the Black Card Rule seemed like a good idea. It was to be the deterrent to stop players being unnecessarily dragged to the ground. In its current application it doesn’t seem to be working. I believe the rule needs to be refined in order for referees to be clear and precise in its use”.

(Q): What is something unique about Gaelic Football?
(A): “Club wise Mitchel’s is very unique. I believe other clubs would envy the family atmosphere there is at this club. Gaelic football in general is great for the friendship that you make. When I came back to Kerry in 2000 it was a great platform from which to get back into the social scene of Tralee”.

(Q): In your opinion what is the biggest challenge facing GAA clubs today?
(A): “In my opinion the biggest challenge is trying to recruit new players and club volunteers alike. It is an ongoing basis and something the club has to work very hard to try and achieve. If you sit on your laurels everything can go pear shaped very quickly. Its all about keeping your club name up there in lights as much as you can”.

(Q): What advice would you give to people thinking about getting involved with John Mitchel’s Club?
(A): “There’s a role in the club for anyone interested. From coaching our under age teams to the various club committees. The club is always looking for people to give some of their spare time. It is very worthwhile to be involved here at Mitchel’s. We have a great club and all any person needs to do is come and talk to any club member”.

(Q): Tell me about the U14 Féile win in 2014 and your role as manager of the team?
(A): “I was part of the management team that won the U14 Féile competition in our division. Ballyhaunis Co. Mayo was the venue for the competition. Initially at the start of the season we knew we had a decent side. Dave Leahy was involved with them at under twelve and he the flagged team as a team that could achieve a lot. Our team had fantastic support in the numbers that travelled to the competition. I would like to mention Brid Mc Elligott and Joan O’Sullivan for the tremendous work done in fund raising for the team. It was a memorable achievement for our U14s and we all enjoyed the experience. The management team consisted of John Higgins, Dave Leahy, Seanie Borrows, Paul Barden and myself”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the Club?
(A): “It is an exciting time to be involved in the club. Our flagship team is the Senior men’s and we have a semi-final of the Intermediate Championship coming up. We also have every chance of promotion to Division 1 of the County League. Our achievements so far this season has a great vibe that runs through the club. Our Senior Ladies also have won their County League and are promoted to Division 2 next season. We all dream of bigger days in the club and playing at the top level of football in the County. We have good numbers at Juvenile level but as always we have to keep driving it on. The move to Camp Ballyseedy was a tough decision to make but right people were in place to make it a success. We have great people at the Club in this present time. I know from my own experience with the U14 team that anything I need I just have to ask. All the right supports are in place from facilities to training equipment. We have a great future but we have to keeping the momentum going”.

U21 Championship Round 2:
John Mitchels played Austin Stacks in the Quarter Final of U21 County Championship in John Mitchels ground in Ballyseedy on Wednesday night played before a large crowd.

Austin Stacks had the better of early exchanges and lead 8 points to 2 after 20 mins and were dominating in all areas and added great scores through Sean Ryan and Ferdia O’Brien and were dominating around the middle with Ciaran O’Connell and Alan Duggan dominating.

Mitchels came roaring back into the game in the final ten minutes of first half and added three great scores through Niall Sheehy to leave half time scores John Mitchels 0-05 Austin Stacks 0-08.

The second half was an excellent half of football and both teams showed great skill throughout. John Mitchels and Austin Stacks traded scores for the first 15 minutes.

Notably, efforts from Ferdia O’Brien from Austin Stacks and Sean Moloney, Niall Sheehy and James duggan for John Mitchels and with ten minutes to go Austin Stacks were leading by 13 points to 11.

But in the final ten minutes John Mitchels totally took over all over the pitch and added great scores from Niall Sheehy(3) Wayne Duggan and Sean Moloney to run out deserving winners on scoreline of John Mitchels 0-16 to Austin Stacks 0-13

U 13 Ladies North Kerry Ladies Sandra Keane Blitz:
We took part in the U13 Blitz at sun drenched John Mitchels Complex on Saturday 18th July.
A total of 14 teams took part. We were drawn with Abbeydorney and Legion.
Our first game we came up against a very strong Abbeydorney team and were down at half time by 4-1 to 1-0 playing into the wind.
In the second half we picked our game and after a great effort went down 5-2 to 2-03.

The next game was against Killarney Legion and again this was a very competitive
game and our girls continued their great efforts and came away with a win of 3-02 to 2-01.

We now qualified for the Shield semi final where we were drawn against our neighbours Na Gael.
This was a very competitive game with every score and tackle contested by both teams. In a low scoring first half Na Gael led by 2 points to 1 in windy conditions.
Mitchels once again raised their game and with Scores hard to come by a strange referring decision led to a goal by Na Gael , Mitchels though dug deep and tacked on 2 points and fought to the end and went down by 1-2 to 0-3 points. It was a great display by Mitchels and Na gael.

The girls can be very proud of their never give up attitude and contested to the final whistle. Well done to all the team.

U-10 BOYS:
We played Milltown/Castlemaine on Sunday last and we played some great football. Ciaran, Darragh, Jack and Cathal showed some great skill and tackled well. Joe, Andrew, Sam and Ted gave some great passes and moved well with the ball. Ben, Sean Og, Darragh and Sean took some great scores and caught great ball.

As Milltown had girls on the team our U10 girls joined us and proved that they were a great addition to the team. Thank you girls and also to your coach. Well done again to all and next Sunday we are taking part in the Milltown Blitz so look out for the text.

Under 8 Girls:
We had another good training session on Sunday morning. The girls concentrated on hand passing and kicking before having a training game with the U10. Questions & Answers
Session with
Dave Leahy

Player Profile: Dave Leahy
Senior John Mitchel’s Player From/To: 1994 – 2006
Junior John Mitchel’s Player From/To: 1992 – 2012
Player Position: Right Half Back

(Q): What is your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “For me it was a great accomplishment to have played at every level in the club.
I played in every age group from juvenile to minor and went on to play in the senior ranks and also U21 and junior football”.

(Q): Tell me what is satisfying about Gaelic football to you?
(A): “Outside of having played the game, for myself it is coaching young players.
Coaching them from a very young age and watching them progress and develop the skills of the game is very satisfying”.

(Q): If you could change a rule in Gaelic Football what would that be?
(A): “I would agree with the view and I am also of the opinion that the pickup should be changed. The rule is open to interpretation from different referees. I think that players should be allowed to pick the ball from the ground. I would also remove the black card which is supposed to be shown for certain types of fouls. The black card is often used when a yellow card would suffice and vice versa”.

(Q): Which Player(s) would you have looked up to in the club?
(A): “As a young player I would have looked up to Martin Dennehy, John Higgins, Frank O’Donnell and John Joe Sheehy. They were a great inspiration to all the young players like myself starting out. It was great for me to have had the opportunity to play with them when I came in to the senior ranks. Of my own age group I had great admiration for players like Fergus O’Connor, Fergal O’Brien and Mick O’Connor”.

(Q): What was your biggest disappointment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “My biggest disappointment was losing the U21 county championship final in 1995.
We played Laune Rangers in Fitzgerald’s Stadium Killarney. Despite having a very good team we lost out by a narrow margin and it was a hard to take”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A): “I played soccer with Marian Park for a number of years. It was a great way of keeping fit over the winter months”.

(Q): What would consider was one of your best games as a player and why?
(A): “The game that comes to mind was in the town league final in the late 1990s.
We played against Kerins O’Rahilly’s and I was happy with my performance on the day”.

(Q): What advice would you give to encourage more people to get involved with John Mitchel’s Club?
(A): “From a coaching point of view you get great satisfaction when things go according to plan. Obviously you have to take the bad with the good. You will make great friends in the club and throughout the county. Any person that gets involved with John Mitchel’s is providing a service to the youth of the community from which the club belongs”.

(Q): Tell me about the U14 Féile win in 2014 and your role with the team?
(A): “I was part of the management team that won the U14 Féile competition in our division in 2014. The final was played in Ballyhaunis Co. Mayo. Our team had fantastic support in the numbers that travelled to the competition. I would like to mention Brid & Cora Mc Elligott, Claire Connolly and Joan O’Sullivan for the tremendous work done in fund raising for the team. It was a memorable achievement for our U14s. We were very proud of all the players in the team. The management team consisted of, Diarmuid Cunnane (Manager), John Higgins, Paul Barden and myself”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A): “From an administration point of view the club is in great hands.
The people that were there in the past few years and those that are there now from the Chairman down are staunch Mitchel’s people. I believe all at the club are going in the right direction. From the football side of things we have good management structure in our senior, junior and U21 teams. Our minors and U16 are doing well and our senior ladies had success in the county league. We have good numbers throughout our juvenile teams. Great credit is due to everyone involved with the club and it’s onwards and upwards for the future”.

We advanced to the Quarter Finals of the Acorn life County U21Championship
with an eight point victory over the home side
played on a rain sodden pitch in Annascaul last Wednesday night.
Despite missing a few regulars, we controlled the first half with James
Duggan’s green flag giving us a four point cushion at half time. A super
individual goal by Jake Moran on the restart ensured our passage to
the Quarter Final where we will have home advantage against Austin
Stacks.

MINORS:
John Mitchels 2-11 St. Pats Blennerville 1-07
John Mitchels Minor team played their first game back since the winning performance against Ardfert in the Town final on Monday evening.

In contrast to the epic performance against Ardfert, Monday’s performance against St. Pats was rusty and silly mistakes were commonplace. But a win is a win and to be fair to all the players everybody tried very hard. Throughout the game Danny Houlihan, Pat Kearney and Aoran O’ Keeffe kept it tight in defence.

MIckey Walsh and Darcy O’Sullivan put in solid performances at midfield while upfront Cian O’Brien and Dylan O’Brien constantly caused trouble to the St. Pats defence. Team performance will have to improve if we are to collect more silverware this year.

Questions & Answers
Session With
Bertie Flynn

Bertie Flynn, Member of John Mitchel’s Lotto Committee
John Mitchel’s Junior Player From/To: 1950-1956
Player Position: Right Corner Forward/Full Forward

(Q): What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “For me one of the greatest memoires I have isn’t necessarily an accomplishment as a player. At the age of thirteen I attended the 1947 County Championship Final with my dad.
The match was played in the Austin Stack Park and Mitchel’s won the title”.
Mitchel’s had some great players like Joe Koehane, Eddie Dunne, Tommy Dowling and Bruddy O Donnell to name but a few. It is great to have the memory of seeing your Club winning a County title especially at a young age”.

(Q): Tell about your memories of the Five in a Row era?
(A): “During the 5 in a row era I was working in England. I always did my best to get home for the Final. The 1959 final was a very tight game and Mitchel’s won it with a late goal. It’s the game that I remember the most because it was the start of the most successful winning run in our history”.

(Q): Which players in the club would you have looked up to?
(A): “We had great players on the senior panel. The O’ Shea brothers Thorney and Derry, Fred Lynch, Teddy O’Dowd and many more. For me I always looked up to Niall Sheehy. He would always give instructions and shouts of encouragement to his team mates. When the chips were down Niall could be counted on to get a vital score”.

(Q): Can you tell me what was most satisfying about your sport?
(A): “I loved the game always both as a spectator and a player. I also have some lifelong friends through football”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A): “I played some Hurling with John Mitchel’s. For me it was mostly football. I wasn’t really interested in playing other sports”.

(Q): What was one of your biggest disappointments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “When I was very young in the mid to late 1940s it was very hard to take when the Mitchel’s lost a match. I remember them losing in the 1946 Championship. Losing that game was a big disappointment”.

(Q): If you could change a rule(s) in Gaelic football what would that be?
(A): “I would change the rule where you could only take a free kick by placing the ball on the ground. The art and skill of taking a free kick is lost to allow it to be taken from the hands. When a free kick is taken from the ground it keeps the play going forward in most cases”.

(Q): Tell me of your role with John Mitchel’s Lotto?
(A): “The lotto is going great. I sell the tickets each week along with all the other committee members. The weekly draw takes place on Tuesday. The Lotto is a very important fundraiser for the Club. Next year the John Mitchel’s lotto will be 25 years in existence”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the Club?
(A): “The new facilities are fantastic. There is great credit due to the committee members that seen the project through to completion. I look forward to the Senior team playing at the top level of football again. I wish them the very best of luck for the rest of the season”.

U12 Girls
County League preliminary Fixtures Phase 1.
The girls played out a draw in their final preliminary round game of the County League at home against Finuge / St Senans last Tuesday evening. In a close fought entertaining and sporting game, played in windy conditions we got a late goal to level up matters. The girls are improving with every game and hopefully they’ll get a good run in the County League proper which starts next week. As there are some outstanding games in the other groups the grading system has’nt been completed yet so at time of print we dont know our next set of fixtures.
The girls that played last week were as follows; Emily O Shea, Elizabeth O Connor, Eimear Murphy, Emma O’Donnell, Erica O Connor, Taylor Rodgers, Angel Quilligan, Caoimhe Leahy, Kerry Oba, Lauren Smullen, Katie Ross, Molly Brosnan, Lynda O Connor, Dawn McLarnan, Paula Clifford & Simera Hunt.
If we dont have a midweek game, training continues on Wednesday evenings at Camp Ballyseedy from 6.00pm to 7.00pm – any new players welcome.

The mentors and John Mitchels GAA club also want to give their best wishes to any girls making their confirmation around this time.

Under-16 BOYS
Training continues Mondays at 7.00 p.m. and Thursday at 6.30 p.m.

U-14 BOYS
Co League Semi-Final:
Renard/St Mary’s 8-13 John Mitchels 6-5

We travelled to Renard on Wednesday evening to play a St Mary’s/Renard combination in the County League semi final.
We started this game very slowly and playing in to a strong wind against a physically stronger side. We couldn’t make any inroads and went in at the break well behind after conceding some soft goals. Half time score 7-9 to 1-2.

In the second half helped by the wind and a much more determined team effort, we battled all the way to the finish showing what we can do when we want to. The half time introduction of Paraic O Callaghan caused our opponents plenty of headaches and Padraig White had an inspired game throughout carrying the game to the opposition at all times .

We were unlucky not to get a few more goals in the second half and the full time score of 8-13 to 6-5 probably didn’t do us justice. That said the game was lost in the first half.

Team was Eric Pula, Robert Kerins, Sean Tighe, David Fitzgibbon, Ciaran O Leary, Stephen Bowler, Patrick O Brien, Padraig White(2-3) James Sheehan, Jordan Mason((0-1), Dylan O Brien, Sean Dillane(1-0), Tyrese Flaherty(1-0), Craig O Brien, Tristan Kirwan(1-0), Paraic O Callaghan(1-1), Cian Barden, Ross Sugrue.

Questions & Answers

Player Profile: Clive O’Callaghan

Senior John Mitchel’s Player From/To: 1996 – 2010
Playing Position: Centre Forward

(Q): What is your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “I believe it was the success in 2007 to retain our Senior status.
That season we won our two play-off games against Listowel Emmett’s and Milltown/Castlemaine to remain in the Senior County Championship”.

(Q): What Player(s) would you have looked up to in the Club?
(A): “When I was a young player I looked up to John Higgins, Martin Dennehy, and Anthony Gleeson. Later on Fergus O’Connor and Fergal O’Brien are two of the players that I admired”.

(Q): What is satisfying to you about your sport?
(A): “I suppose it is having been involved with Juvenile teams since I was seventeen.
The highlight for me was winning back to back Minor County League (Div. 1) as a mentor 2011-12”.

(Q): If you could change a rule in Gaelic Football what would that be?
(A): “I would give an extra point for a score that was kicked from a measured distance from goal. Kicking points from distance is often necessary in today’s game with tactics such as blanket defence”.

(Q): What was your biggest disappointment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “My biggest disappointment was losing our Senior status in 2008.
We were beaten in a play-off match against Ardfert. It was hard to take given our tradition and past success in the Senior County Championship”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A): “I played Rugby as a Juvenile. I played Hurling and I play Soccer as a pastime”.

(Q): What would you consider was one of your best games as a player and why?
(A) “It was a County League game against Currow in 2007. We won the game and it is one that I believe I played well and made a difference on the day”.

(Q): Can you tell me about your time as a Senior Team Selector?
(A): “The first year we were promoted and it was also the first time in 30 years that we won the Town Championship. It was a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the Club?
(A): “The Club is in a great position at the moment with the facilities and personnel we have.
I wish every success to the all the Teams and to everyone involved in working on behalf of our Club”.

Under-16 BOYS
Central League Semi Final- Mitchels 5-10 , Castlegregory 2-13.
This game was a classic example of the saying “never write off a Mitchels Team” as the team put in a massive second half to book a place in the final. We started the game very poorly with Castle getting 1-5 without us scoring and we looked dead and tired on the pitch but we finally woke up 10 minutes into the game where we put two points on the board from Michael Kelleher and Eoin Sugrue but then Castlegregory flew down the pitch to get a goal and a few points before Ryan Ward buried a goal and we got 2 more points before the ref blew the half time whistle with the score 2-09 to 1-4 in favour of Castgregory.

The team received a wide awakening at half time and it seemed to work like magic as they flew out of the traps in the second half to quickly get a a goal and two points from Michael Kelleher before Castlegregory got 2 of only 4 points on the second half. quickly after those points we received a penalty which was clinically dispatched by Jack Myers and then a 45 made it’s way into the net from the boot of Michael Kelleher put us 2 points ahead but once Castle fought back with two great points which finished off their scoring.

A spilled ball by the Castlegregory keeper fell onto Ryan Wards boot and he finished followed by a point by Owen Breen put us 4 points ahead and we finished off the game with two magnificent points from Michael Kelleher and Ryan Ward to complete an unbelievable comeback and exceptional second half. Congrats to all players for such a great second half performance. Next for us is To Be Confirmed.

On Sunday the 26th of April our under 6s welcomed some players from Keel to train with us. We had massive numbers ourselves with 42 Mitchels players a mix of both boys and girls and also there was 16 players from Keel but our top class mentor team of 12 people both men and woman were well able.

Lots of fun was had by all during training while they all completed an obstacle course and performed some basic football skills as part of the session. We ended the session by playing 3 fun matches and players showed great skills and had lots of fun.

A super day was had by all children who went to represent Mitchels Under 6s against Dr Crokes last Saturday morning – Great fun was had on the bus to and from Killarney with a special thanks to all players who were superbly behaved all morning – our U6s wore the colours with great pride in their fun football matches – with special mentions to;

Questions & Answers
Player Profile: Jimmy O Mahony
Honours Won:
John Mitchels Minor County football Championship title 1961 (Team Captain)
Senior County Football Championship titles 1961, 1962, 1963
Kerry:
Minor Munster title 1962
Minor All Ireland Title 1962 (Team Captain)
Munster U21 title 1962
Player Position: Midfield

(Q): Can you tell about the history of the 1961 minor title?
(A): “We played against Castleisland Desmond’s in the 1961 final. We had a superb minor team, if that team could have represented Kerry I have little doubt we would have won the All-Ireland that year. On the team we had players like Mikie Morris and Dom O Donnell who went on to win U21, Junior and Senior All Ireland titles with Kerry. I played in midfield alongside Mikie Morris. On the path to the final we defeated Mid-Kerry, St. Brendan’s and Austin Stack’s. Mitchel’s also had a very good minor team in 1962 and were narrowly beaten in the Championship by North Kerry in Listowel”.
(Q): What do you believe you brought to the team as captain?
(A): “I believe I brought leadership and encouragement. I never had to use four letter words to any player we played as a happy team. Jacques Mc Donald was a wonderful coach we also had a great back room team in Eddie Dunne, John Joe Sheehy, Eamonn Fitzgerald and Jerry Flynn”.

(Q): What was your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “It was a great honour and a great since of accomplishment to captain the minor county champions in 1961”.

(Q): What player(s) would you have looked up to in the club

(A): “The player I would have looked up to and admired the most was Paudie Sheehy. Paudie was on the senior title winning team in 1952. What stood out about him for me was his speed great ball control and his accuracy. Paudie won seven senior county titles 1952, 1959-63 and 1966”.

(Q): What other sports were you involved in?

(A): “Weight lifting/training was my chosen sport after I finished playing football. My brother Gerald was the Father of modern weight training for athletics in Kerry. Many of our All Ireland winning champions trained in O’Mahony’s gym. Players like John O Keeffe, Tommy Doyle and Jimmy Deenihan to name but a few”.

(Q): Can you tell about your minor All Ireland title with Kerry in 1962?
(A): “It was a great honour for me to captain an All-Ireland winning team. John Mitchel’s had seven players on that Kerry team. We defeated Mayo 6-05 to 0-7. The U21 championship began that year and we had six Mitchel’s players on the panel including myself. Dom O Donnell was the captain and we won a Munster title beaten cork 2-07 to 1-04”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A): “I would love to see Mitchel’s winning the intermediate championship and going back again to where we belong in the senior championship. I wish every success to the team and all at the club for the future”.

We rallied through Alan O’Donoghue (2) and he also added a great goal thereafter but An Gaeltacht to their credit rallied to draw level with five mins left. The game was very tense with five mins to go and we added a great point from Stevie O’Mahony to edge out a great contest by one point

County League Fixtures 2015
On a beautiful evening for football John Mitchels met a more determined and motivated team in Laune Rangers. From the throw in Mitchels were on the backfoot as laune rangers piled on the pressure.

Goalkeeper Paul Lynch made some fantastic saves to keep mitchels in touch. Half time John Mitchels 0-02 Laune Rangers 3-06. A more eager John Mitchels team took to the field in the 2nd half and put in a more gallant performance. Pat Kearney, Conor Herilhy and Darcy o Sullivan drove the team on and Dylan O’Brien kicked seven fantastic points to put a more respectable look on the scoreboard.

SENIOR LADIES
The team played Causeway on Friday night last in the Division 3 County League Final. The sides had met earlier in the season and Causeway had recorded a resounding victory.

In the opening ten minutes of the match, the Mitchels girls raced into the lead scoring three point without reply. Causeway and Mitchels then swapped points for the rest of the half to leave the half time score John Mitchels 0-7, Causeway 0-4.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half saw causeway out score Mitchels by four points to two, the Mitchels ladies dug deep and put another three points on the scoreboard to give them a four point advantage.

Causeway threw everything they had at the Mitchels and were rewarded with a goal. This left the bare minimum between the sides with 7 minutes remaining on the clock. The girls played fantastic football for the rest of the game and kept Causeway scoreless.

Final score John Mitchels 0-12; Causeway 1-08

This victory ensures that the ladies will play in Division Two for 2016. After the match Imelda Roche from the Ladies County Board presented the cup to team Captain Kayleigh McCarthy who thanked the mentors for their work with the team and her fellow team mates for their dedication to training.

The John Mitchels team and scorers were Andrea O’Connor, Patriz Brosnan, Kayleigh McCarthy, Diana O’Keeffe, Ashleigh Murphy, Anna Murphy, Jane Carmody, Shauna Hanafin (0-1), Cliodhna Hayes (0-4), Tasha O’Sullivan, Niamh Myers (0-2)’ Carron O’Brien (0-3), Tara Fitzgerald, Erris O’Carroll (0-2), Claire O’Sullivan, Ariane Finnegan, Catherine O’Sullivan, Tanya O’Connor.

U12 Girls
The girls played the North Kerry shield Final against Moyvane in Mountcoal on Sunday the 19th of April. In an epic encounter against a team that we had already drawn with in the competition we came away with a 3 point win on a scoreline of John Mitchels 2-03 to Moyvanes 1.03. We played against a stiff breeze in the first half and after defending well we conceded a late well taken goal to be down by only a point at halftime.

However, this team has a never say die attitude and a goal after 10 minutes of the second half and a few points put us back in the driving seat. Despite a few anxious moments towards the end where it was all hands to the pump we ran out deserving winners on the night. In joyous scenes Maurice McNamara presented the trophy to our Captain Aimee Kerins who thanked all parties including Moyvane for a very sporting game.

We were also away to Corca Dhuibhne in Round 3 of the preliminary County League on Tuesday evening and at this stage we have one final game at home in this phase against Finuge / St Senans and we’ll then start the county league proper in May.

The girls that played last week were as follows; Tara Field, Elizabeth O Connor, Eimear Murphy, Emma O’Donnell, Erica O Connor, Caoimhe Leahy, Kerry Oba, Aimee & Ciara Kerins, Lauren Smullen, Katie Ross, Taylor Rodgers, Angel Quilligan, Lynda O Connor, Dawn McLarnan, Molly Duggan, Emily O Shea,Emma Lynch, Lilly Collins, Emily & Ciara Poultney.

Under-16 BOYS
John Mitchels 7-12, St.Pats. 5-9.
We performed excellently in this last group game of the Central League. A massive performance in the first half resulted in us being well ahead at half time. With the game in the bag and we all ready qualified we took off our main shooters and defenders but a great performance from all players saw us bag the points.

Next for us is the Semi-final Monday night v Castlegregory 7pm at Home.
All support would be much appreciated.

Training continues Mondays at 7.00 p.m. and Thursday at 6.30 p.m.

LEE STRAND U14 COUNTY LEAGUE FIXTURES:
County league Mitchels 3-16 St Mary’s/renard 4-10
This was a vital league game for us played at home last Wednesday night. We started very well and led at half time by 2-9 to 1-3 with goals from Tristan Kirwan and Tyrese Flaherty. The away side scored three quick goals at the start of the second half to bring it level and it was a topsy turvy game all the way from there until the end .

We defended very well with Sean Tighe outstanding in full back ably assisted by David Fitzgibbon and Dara Sheridan. Padraig White and James Sheehan put in a huge shift in midfield and up front we were always dangerous with Jordan Mason having his best game of the year so far. This result gives us a chance of a home semi final if we can win our final game away to Glenbeigh.

We play Glenbeigh away on Tuesday at 7.30 in Gkenbeigh. Meet in club at 5.45 for the bus . Bring gumshields and €2 for bus

CLUB PROFILE
Profile: Paddy O Mahony
Club Vice-President
Honours Won: Minor County football championship title 1958
Player Position: Right Corner Forward
Member of John Mitchel’s Lotto Committee

(Q): Can you tell me about the 1958 Minor County Title?
(A):”I came into the Minor team in 1957. Training was officially two nights per week. We would also train with the Seniors which meant we’d train five nights.
Jake’s Mc Donald was our Manager.
In 1958 we played against Dingle in the Minor County Final in the Austin Stack Park. The late Philo Healy was the team captain. We played with the wind in the first half and by a stroke of luck the wind changed so we also had it second half. The match finished 12 points for Mitchel’s no score to Dingle. It was probably the only Minor County Final where one of the teams remained scoreless”.

(Q): What player(s) would you have looked up to in the club?
(A):”In my time we had very good footballers in the Club and some went on to play for Kerry. Players like Teddy O Dowd, John (Thorney) O Shea, Seamus Roche and Harry Burke to name but a few. For me the player I looked up to most was Niall Sheehy. Niall was an outstanding footballer and a great Club man”.

(Q): What are your memories of the 5 in Row era?
(A): “John Mitchel’s have the distinction of winning two Senior County Championship titles in one year. For one reason or another the 1959 final wasn’t played until 1960. The 1960 final was played in April of 1961. Later in the year the team won 1961 final proper.
In September of 1963 after claiming their fifth County title in a row the team travelled to Dublin. They played St. Vincent’s in their grounds in Malahide.
The Vincent’s had eleven Dublin County players on their panel and Mitchel’s beat them in a challenge match. I believe if there was an All-Ireland club competition back then we would have won at least one title.
In 1964 we lost to South Kerry with a last minute goal in the quarter final. We were beaten by a point in the 1965 semi-final Mid-Kerry 4-7 John Mitchel’s 4-6. In 1966 Mitchel’s won the title again beating East-Kerry in the final”.

(Q): What other sports have you played?
(A): “I played some hurling with John Mitchel’s at minor level we had some good hurlers but I believe the interest faded with the success of the footballers in the late fifties early sixties”.

(Q): What has been your biggest disappointment as a Mitchel’s player/supporter?
(A): “One of my biggest disappointment as a supporter was losing the County final in 1989. I believe if we had won we would have followed up with more title wins. Mitchel’s had very good footballers on the team. Since then we have lost our senior status but I am sure success will come again”.

(Q): Can you tell me about your role with the John Mitchel’s Lotto Committee?
(A): “The original idea came from a Mitchel’s supporters club in the late 1980’s. We used to raise money for the up-keep of the pitch & grounds and to pay for buses for away matches. A number of club members got together in 1991 and we decided to start a weekly lotto draw. Next year marks 25 years of the draw and we’re still going strong. The committee meets every Tuesday evening to complete the weekly draw. The members of the committee are Bertie Flynn, Ed Stack, Donal Carrick, David O’Brien, Mickey Kelleher, Claire Connolly and myself”.

(Q): Your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A): “We have excellent facilities and great credit is due to all the Club Officers that worked tirelessly on the project. It will take time but I have no doubt that the Senior team will be back playing at the top level of football in the County.

It is great to see the young players on Sunday mornings but we need to keep that going each and every year to bring success in the future. For myself it is a great honour to be club Vice-President. In the past I have held the positions of Club Treasurer and County Board Delegate. I have always enjoyed working on behalf of the club and will continue to do so”.

MitchelsSENIORS:
St. Brendan’s League Final 2015:
We played St. Pats in the Final of St Brendan’s Final last Friday in Caherslee on a dry but cold and windy evening. The first half was a dogged affair with both sides showing great intensity and scores were hard to come by.

We started well with a Ciaran Singleton score but St Pats added two scores to go a point ahead. Alan O’Donoghue and Shane O’Connor scored a point each before St Pats deservedly equalised to leave scores at half time St Pats 0-03 to John Mitchels 0-03.

Mitchels started the second half in great fashion and added a score from Oliver Coffey and further points from Alan O’Donoghue(2) and Sean Moloney before we scored a great goal from Mike Deane.

St Pats to their credit came back into it and added two points and would have been way closer only for some wayward shooting. We closed out the game well and ran out deserving winners on final scoreline of John Mitchels 1-07 St Pats 0-05.

The St Brendan’s League Cup was presented to our Captain Lawrence Bastible to the delight of our team, Mentors and Supporters.

U12 Girls
The girls had a busy week playing three North Kerry league games against Duagh on Sunday the 22nd which they won, Moyvane on Monday the 23rd which they drew and against Kerins O Rahillys on Sunday the 29th which they also won.

This sets them up nicely in the table and qualifies them for the Shield Final but we wont know the opponents until the other teams have finished their games. Their hard work and committment at training over the past few weeks is showing, the girls are having plenty fun, making new friends and one can see each one of them improving with every match.

The preliminary section of the County League starts on the weekend of April 4th and a full list of games is listed below. These games are subject to change and once they are completed all of the teams in the County will be graded and we’ll commence the County League proper so there is loads of football on the way.

The girls that played last week are as follows; Tara Field, Mairead McCarthy, Lynda O Connor, Elizabeth O Connor, Taylor Rodgers,Eimear Murphy, Erica O Connor, Katie Ross, Caoimhe Leahy, Kerry Oba, Amee Kerins,Lauren Smullen, Angel Quilligan, Molly & Emily Brosnan, Emily & Ciara Poultney, Dawn McLarnan, Paula Clifford & Emma O Donnell.

The club, mentors and players would like to wish Emily O Shea a speedy recovery from her recent injury and hope to see her back soon.
As the evenings are now longer and brighter, we may look to change training times – if this happens everyone will be informed during the week.

Under-16 BOYS
U16 Central Region
Our U16 team were after a busy week which started on Monday 23rd with a comprehensive victory over Cromane at home in our first game in the Central League. We were near full strength for the game and it showed on the pitch with a superb team performance which made us way too strong for our opponents. All our forwards got some wonderful scores which included a magnificent point from Shane McCarthy and a perfectly placed penalty by Jack Myers and our backs have to be praised for keeping Cromane scoreless in the second half.

Next for us was Castleisland Desmonds at home on Thursday 26th in the Castleisland District League. Result: Mitchels 2-9 Desmond’s 3-10. This was a superb game of football played underlights which Castleisland narrowly edged out. A couple of missing players were the difference as we missed a lot of great chances in both halves to get scores and win the game.

We went in at half time 2 points down but a very poor start to the second half saw us 13 points behind with 10 minutes but the players showed great heart to get 2-3 without conceding which included a top class goal clearance from Graham Hudson and an exceptional solo run and goal from Eoin Sugrue.
Finally we played Ardfert at home on Monday 30th which was our third game in seven days.

This game was played in horrendous conditions which resulted in a low scoring game which Ardfert won 0-7 to our 1-0. The wind was blowing straight across the pitch which didn’t suit our team and we struggled throughout the game missing a lot of players from our starting fifteen. We got off to a great start with a goal from Shane Doyle but we really weren’t able to cope with the conditions.

A shoutout has to be given to Shane McCarthy who made some brilliant saves in goals and Mark Ryle was solid at the back with Jonathan Downey and Tadhg Broderick.

MitchelsQuestions & Answers Session With Alan O Donoghue

Name: Alan O Donoghue. Senior John Mitchel’s player from/to: 2006 – present.

Favourite playing position:  Centre half forward.

(Q): What was one of your best games as a player?

(A): “For me one of my best or most memorable game was my debut game in the senior championship against Kerins O’Rahillys, I was seventeen at the time and it was a big occasion for me”.

(Q): What was one of your worst games as a player?

(A): “One of my worst game in terms of the result was losing to Ardfert last season in the intermediate championship, we lost the match by a single point and it was hard to take, it’s the match that sticks out for me”.

(Q): What was one of your biggest disappointments as a Mitchel’s player?

(A): “The biggest disappointment not only for myself but for the club and all the supporters was been relegated to the intermediate championship in 2008, the club had a long tradition of playing in the senior county championship”.

(Q): What has been your greatest accomplishments as a Mitchel’s player?

(A) “I believe for me it was a great accomplishment to become a regular senior player from a young age, there was no learning the trade as such and it has worked out well for me from the start”.

(Q): What players would you have looked up to when you came into the senior panel?

(A) “When I joined the senior ranks there was a number of players I would have looked up to but Aiden Moynihan was a great mentor for me and gave me a lot of advice and encouragement as a young player”.

(Q): Are you involved in any other sports?

(A) “I play hurling and soccer, when I was younger I played a lot of soccer”.

(Q): What is the most challenging thing for you in your sport?

(A) “One of the most challenging things for me and I suppose for the team as well is to try and be successful in winning games, this has a positive effect on both the team and supporters alike”.

(Q): What is something that is unique about your sport?

(A) “What is unique is the whole community ethos, the club sprit and been a part of a great club that is what is so unique and special about my sport”.

(Q): If you could change one rule in your sport what would that be?

(A) “I would change the pickup from having to put your boot under the ball to just pick it off the ground because it slows the game and stops the flow of play and because referees seem to have different interpretations of the rule depending on conditions on the day”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?

(A) “At present I would like to see greater numbers of players across some of the juvenile teams, whereas some teams have big numbers others teams struggle from time to time, we have some great people at the club at this present time which includes the people in charge, regarding our senior team there is a good core of players at the moment and we have a great coaching staff.

Going forward we have a great facility and all the right structures in terms of training and coaching will be in place, of course there’s always room for improvement and I am sure everyone in the club will work to bring success at the top level back to the club”.

U12 Girls

The girls got their 2015 season off in what can only be described as arctic conditions away to Finuge St Senans in Mountcoal last Saturday. Great credit has to go to both teams for a very sporting game as it was obvious from the start that the winner would be the team that scored most with the wind as it was impossible to play against it.

It was Finuge/St Senans second game which stood to them in the end and they came out narrow winners but our girls will improve for the experience. The girls that played were as follows; Emily O Shea, Lynda O’Connor, Elizabeth O Connor, Tara Field, Eimear Murphy, Erica O Connor, Katie Ross, Caoimhe Leahy, Kerry Oba, Amee Kerins,Lauren Smullen, Taylor Rodgers, Angel Quilligan, Molly Brosnan, Emily & Ciara Poultney.

MitchelsSENIORS
St. Brendan’s League Fixtures 2015
We played Churchill in St Brendan’s League last Sunday which was played in excellent conditions on our home grounds. Both teams exchanged points with our scores coming from Lawrence Bastible and Sean Moloney. Our inside forward
line of Niall Sheehy, Alan O’Donoghue and Sean Moloney were creating havoc inside. They were getting excellent ball from Oliver Coffey on the forty and our midfielders John Higgins and Lawrence Bastible who were dominant at mid-field. Niall Sheehy and Sean Moloney both added goals in quick concession and points by Oliver Coffey and Sean Moloney (2) put us in a commanding position. We capped off an excellent first half with a third goal scored by Stevie O’Mahony which left half time score John mitchels 3-05 to Churchill 0-02.

We made some substitutions at half time and they all accounted well for themselves. We added more scores In second half from Niall Sheehy Alan O’Donoghue (2) and Graham Higgins. Churchill scored two goals near the end. We ended up deserving winners in a score line of 3-11 to 2-03.

MINORS
Coiste Tra Li League Fixtures 2015:
Mitchels 4-9 Ardfert 1-11
A very high spirited performance by both sides in the foggy dew. Both sides scoring well but Mitchels hit the net with some very fast direct forward play. Ardfert came at Mitchels hard in the second half but found a defence on top form and they had to settle for points when perhaps they needed goals. Mitchels stepped it up a gear towards the end and seemed relentless and didn’t look like they were going to leave their lead slip. Ardfert had some super performances with their goal coming late in the second half. It was the only real blemish on an outstanding team performance by John Mitchels who ran out deserving winners. It was very hard to single anyone out in what was a truly superb team performance.

Fair play to our lads they dug deep and 4 unanswered points one each by Oliver Coffey, Wayne Conway, Alan O’Donoghue and Brian Costello had us one point in front and we held on to win final score John mitchels 0-10 Listry 0-9.

Magnificent Mitchel’s Return With All-Ireland Féile Title

IT’S been an amazing weekend for the John Mitchels GAA Club with their Under 14 side bringing home their first ever All-Ireland title from the Féile competition in Galway.

The Under 14 side won five games on the way to the final where they were victorious against Kilkenny side, Dicksboro (for a comprehensive report on the weekend click here).

“We’re still on a high,”  said team trainer, Diarmuid Cunnane, speaking to TraleeToday.ie on Tuesday.

“It was just an unreal experience when we came home on Sunday night. There was a Garda escort from the Ballygarry House Hotel to the club grounds where there was a few hundred people waiting. They cheered all the lads getting off the bus and they deserved every bit of praise. It just shows that hard work pays off,” he said.

“I was especially delighted for Dave Leahy, who has been with this group of players since they were Under 10. He saw they had the potential to be a Féile team. Seanie Burrows, who would have played in the 1960s and John Higgins who has an All-Ireland with Kerry, as well as Paul Barden were also part of the team,” said Diarmuid.

Club Chairperson Bríd McElligott was delighted with the victory.

“We are all absolutely thrilled. We have had many players in the club who have won All-Irelands but this is the first time an All-Ireland title has been brought to the club. We were very proud to be the only Kerry team to win a title at the weekend,” she said.

The club paid special tribute to the St Gabriel’s club from Galway who hosted the boys for the weekend and provided them with a home away from home.

MitchelsUNDER14 BOYS
FEILE WEEKEND
Feile 2014
The u-14 team set out for Galway early on Friday morning to take part in the All-Ireland Feile Football Finals, although the team and mentors had heard about the wonderful adventure that lay ahead of them.

The new friends made in St. Gabriels, the comradeship formed and most of all the homecoming on Sunday night as they returned to the club under Garda escort as All-Ireland Champions will never be forgotten.

Hundreds of club members young and old awaited their arrival and lined the road from the bridge to the clubhouse and greeted the bus with cheering that could be heard down in John Joe Sheehy Road.

Pat Costello spoke on behalf of the Juvenile section of the club and his words to these John Mitchels history makers will be remembered forever.

Diarmuid Cunnane spoke on behalf of the Mentors, team captain Mikey Kelleher spoke on behalf of the players, finally Brid McElligott spoke and thanked the players, the mentors, the parents, the sponsors and everybody involved behind the scenes that made the trip possible.

The Feile football matches:
Our first game on Friday evening was against Athenry (Galway), our boys took a bit of time to settle after the long road trip but led at half time by 1-03 to 0-0, Athenry got a few points on the board in the second half but the Mitchels boys persisted and ended as winners on a score line of 1-06 to 0-04.

Match number two was against group favourites Ayler Gaels (Kildare), this was an exciting match from start to finish, with John Mitchels leading by a point at the break, (2-02 to 2-01).

Ayler Gaels threw everything at the boys in the second half and were 1-02 ahead with 6 minutes left on the clock. The never say die Mitchels boys staged a comeback and scored two fantastic goals to win by the narrowest of margins, final score John Mitchels 4-13: Ayler Gaels 3-05.

Match number three was played on Saturday morning against host club St. Gabriels (Galway), who gave our boys a guard of honour as they ran onto the pitch.

Mitchels led at half time by 1-06 to 0-02, and ended as victors with the score board reading 2-14 to 1-03.

This victory ensured a quarter-final spot in the cup competition. After this match Chairperson Brid McElligott made presentations to the St. Gabriel’s club, a specially commissioned t-shirt for each of the players and mentors which had both club crests with Feile 2014 inscribed under the crests, and also presented a specially commissioned crystal clock for the St. Gabriels clubhouse.

Brid also made a presentation to the chairperson of Padraig Pearses of Roscommon who hosted our first round games.

The Quarter-Final
The opposition in the quarter-final were Gloucestershire (UK), this was a one sided affair with the score at half time 5-07 to 0-0, the opposition got a few on the score board in the second half but Mitchels continued as of the first half and were once again victorious.

Final Score: John Mitchels 7-10; Gloucestershire 1-02.

This victory ensured a trip to Ballyhaunis on Sunday morning to take part in the semi-finals.

The Semi-Final
We met Naomh Eammon (Laois) in the semi-final on Sunday morning. The Mitchels were first to score with a point from Mikey Kelleher. Naomh Eammon quickly responded with two well taken goals.

Mitchels held tough and kept plugging away and scored four points to the opposition’s one point to leave us two points down at half time, Mitchels 0-5; Naomh Eammon 2-1.

The support from Kerry and Munster legend Mick Galway at half time spurned on the boys and Mitchels levelled things within five minutes of the second half.

Naomh Eammon responded with a point to once again take the lead, John Mitchels kept up the momentum and scored three points from hard earned frees to take a two point lead. Naomh Eammon got one back to leave a point between the sides, for the last three minutes they threw everything at the boys from the yellow road but couldn’t get through the super Mitchels team.

At the final whistle the scoreboard read: John Mitchels 0-10: Naomh Eammon 2-03.

The Final
We played against Dicksboro (Kilkenny) in the final. Within the first two minutes the opposition scored two fast goals, Mitchels settled and stuck to the game plan and soon had one in the back of the net with a superb goal from Darrion Hurley, followed by points from Kevin Williams and Padraig White to leave us one behind.

Dicksboro had a point before half time to leave them two ahead at the break. Half time score: John Mitchels 1-02: Dicksboro 2-01.

Mitchels came out in a second half and got on the ball straight away. Captain fantastic Mikey Kelleher scored a magnificent point from 40 meters out, this was followed by another great point this time from the boot of Craig O’Brien to level the match.

Mitchels threw everything at Dicksboro for the next five minutes and were rewarded with a point from Daniel Molloy. Dicksboro tried hard but the Mitchels full back and half back lines stood tall and with outstanding defending won ball after ball, keeping Dicksboro scoreless for the entire second half.

The final whistle saw great jubilation from the team, the mentors, the parents, the club chairperson, the club officers and the many supporters who travelled to Connaught to witness John Mitchels first All-Ireland win.

After the match, team Captain Michael Kelleher was presented with the All-Ireland winners’ Cup from Liam O’Neill, president of the GAA.

This presentation was met with great cheering and tears from both John Mitchels and host club St. Gabriels supporters and parents.

The scoring tally for the six games amounted to 15 goals and 48 points. Well done to the team and the mentors Diarmuid Cunnane, Dave Leahy, Paul Barden, John Higgins and Seanie Burrows.

The John Mitchels team and scorers were, Dylan O’Se, Sean Gannon, Tadgh Broderick, Steve Bowler, Graham Hudson, Conor Fitzmaurice, Daniel Molloy (0-1), Padraig White (1-03), Cian Barden, Ross Sugrue, Dylan O’Brien, Micky Kelleher (1-13), Kevin Williams (2-7), Ryan Ward (1-10), Alex O’Shea (1-02), Shane McCarthy (2-04), Donie Dillane (0-1), James Sheehan (0-2), Craig O’Brien (2-01), Padraic O’Callaghan (0-1), Tyreese Flaherty (1-0), Darrion Hurley(2-03), Conor O’Brien (2-0), and James O’Connor. Special thanks to our host club St. Gabriels, we will never forget the hospitality shown to our players and to all the John Mitchels club members. Thanks also the all the club members and supporters who couldn’t make the trip but send messages of support on both Facebook and Twitter.

The team and mentors really appreciated it. Thanks also to all who contributed to our fundraising efforts, to Henneberys who organised the gear for the players and mentors and to Jackie Power transport who ensured our players got to and from Tralee safe

John Mitchels Club News 16/04/14

MitchelsCounty League

John Mitchels 2-11
Spa 3-12

With a very much under strength side we staged a strong rally in the second half only failing by
four points in the end. In the first half we were all at sea in defence and Spa scored three goals two from play and the other from a penalty. Dermot Ragget made a great save for the penalty only for Spa to score on the rebound. Half time score Spa 3-6 John Mitchels 0-4.

The second half performance was much improved and we were clearly the better team to pull back a deficit of eleven points to just four in the end. Considering how many players we were missing our second half performance gives a certain amount of hope going forward.

Our next game is away to Ardfert in the Intermediate Championship next Sunday June 21st 2pm.

UNDER14 BOYS

We played our first central League division one game on Friday last and suffered a heavy defeat to Churchill. We were without a lot of our regulars but even allowing for that we put in a very lacklustre display. This was our final game before our trip to Feile on Friday week so hopefully we can put it behind us and train hard over the next two weeks.

Table Quiz

We are hosting a table quiz on Thursday 19th June as part of the ongoing fundraising efforts for Feile. Start time will be 8pm in Boherbee with an entry fee of €40 per table. Please come along and support the night , there will be spot prizes and plenty of fun to be had.
