THE Mods & Minis’ store in Tralee, along with their other five stores in Munster, came together with their customers and held a recent fundraising drive throughout all their stores, raising nearly €3,000 for local charities.

The Tralee store raised over €495 for The Cashel Ward, which is the Children’s Unit at University Hospital Kerry. Staff members at the store chose The Cashel Ward as it is very dependent on fundraising.

Monies raised are put towards improvements being made to the Ward that will help make the environment more comfortable for sick children and their parents.

MINORS:

We had a good draw away to Churchill on Tuesday last (5th April) in our final round of the Co League on a score of 2-11 to 2-11. We had the advantage of a strong wind in the opening half but only went in at half-time leading by 2-5 to 2-3. Our goals were both well taken by Gary Howard and Conor Hurley.

We looked to be facing a difficult task after Churchill drew level in the opening minutes of the 2nd half, but we played some great football into the strong wind for the remainder of the game to secure an important draw. Pat Kearney had an outstanding game and was well assisted in the backline by Mark Ryle and Eoin Barden. Conor Hurley and Jack Myers were hugely influential in midfield, while up front Gary Howard, Mikey Walsh and Ger Tobin impressed.

Team: Dylan O Shea, Mark Ryle, Darren Daly, Aaron Pitman, Eoin Barden, Pat Kearney, Conor Hurley (1-2) Jack Myers, Darcy O’Sullivan, Mikey Walsh (0-5), Johnny Downey, Gary Howard (1-1) Owen Breen (0-1) Ger Tobin (0-1) Joe Griffin (0-1) Darrion Hurley

We have now qualified for the semi-final of the Co League where we will be away to Churchill, date to be confirmed.

Both teams exchanged scores and half time score Mitchels 0-4 Firies 1-2.
Second half Mitchels pushed hard and were rewarded with 2 goals by Ruth Moriarty. Firies pushed hard for scores but excellent defending by captain Julie Foley and Erica O Connor and great goalkeeping by Kerry Oba kept Firies at bay. Late in the game we conceded a goal after intense pressure. Final score Mitchels 2-4 Firies 4-2. Well done girls you never stopped trying.

Congrats to Shane Nolan, a very popular coach at our recent hurling and camogie Easter camp. Shane Nolan has added another chapter in a storybook year so far for Kerry hurling by coming out on top with a very dominant victory in this week’s GAA.ie Hurling Player of the Week vote. The Crotta O’Neill’s man inspired the Kingdom to a crucial win over Laois on Saturday that preserves their status as a Division 1B team for the 2017 season. For his outstanding individual display in that match he was duly rewarded with an impressive 51 per cent of the votes cast on the official GAA Twitter.

Note From IT Tralee:

As seen by our mentors last week … 8 year old boy turns up to Parnells training for the first time Friday evening, plays a bit at home with his brother he says. He then goes and roll lifts the sliotar and strikes it over his shoulder on the run. Better still hes coming back next week. Still plenty of potential hurlers out there who need to come train with Parnells.

Under 8 and 10 Tue and Fri:

From next week our under 8’s and 10’s will train on Tuesday and Fridays at 7 pm.

Minors.

Our minor team drew against John Mitchels in Churchill on Tuesday evening in their final round of the County league, final score 2-11 to 2-11. We struggled with our form at times in the first half putting our defence under severe pressure and trailed by 3 points at half time. We started the second half with a well worked team score, however Mitchels rallied back and dominated the remaining 3rd quarter of the match.

As we have seen with the other round matches the team’s bounce back ability came alive in the final quarter. The Churchill wing backs, midfield and wing forward lines all dominated their opponents resulting in Mitchels not being able to get the ball out of their half. Churchill notched score after score eating into the Mitchels lead. We finally equalised 2 minutes into injury time and the referee was happy to blow for a draw. We now have home advantage for the semi final on the week commencing 11/04/16, opponents TBA. Details, once finalised, will be posted on the website -all support welcome.

Seniors.

Our Seniors, short a few regulars, were defeated away to Scartaglin on Saturday evening. In difficult conditions on a heavy pitch the home side settled quickest and registered 5 points before we got off the mark. Scartaglin scored again, before Churchill’s Neil Collins-O’Brien punched a dropping ball into the net to leave the halftime score 0-06 to 1-01. The third quarter was an even affair with both teams exchanging points, Churchill’s scores coming from Mike O’Brien, Collins-O’Brien (2) and Ivan Parker.

Moving into the final quarter Churchill trailed by one point, but this was to be as close as we would get to the hosts. Scart scored 6 points more before the final whistle, interrupted by a Parker point. The final score of 0-15 to 1-06 was a little flattering on Scart, who kicked there points in injury time. Churchill will have little time to dwell on this defeat as the focus switches to next weekend and the Junior Championship away to Beale.

1916 Commemoration.

Churchill GAA have the distinction of being named after the 1916 Patriots Padraig and Willie Pearse. The club will commemorate 1916 on Monday April 25th at the Community Centre at the Spa at 7.00 pm.The event will include the reading of the proclamation, the Raising of our National Flag, the singing of our National Anthem, music, song and poetry associated with 1916. County Minor League R4
Castlegregory 2-14    St Pats 1-11

St Pats minors travelled to Castlegregory last Tuesday night in their final game of the county league. Due to a rugby game, the team was down to a bare 13 including debutant Damien Quirke who answered his club’s call and played extremely well in goals. St Pats started the game in barnstorming fashion and dominated the early exchanges with Kieran Dwyer and Cillian “Massey” O’Riordan leading by example, launching wave after wave of attacks from midfield.

St Pats raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 20 minutes, with Eoin Greaney in particular in devastatingly accurate form. Indeed, Eoin was to finish with a staggering 0-7 from the centre forward position. The full back line of Shane O’Donoghue and Joe O’Connor had the beating of their men throughout the game and can both be very satisfied with their performances. The half back line of Brian Murphy, Tommy Lynch and Mikey Cahill were playing a world of good football and were fantastically tigerish in the tackle, hard but fair.

Football is a fickle sport and despite heroics all over the pitch, Castle struck late for two quick fire goals just before halftime, which saw us trail, in a travesty of justice, by 3 points at halftime, 2-4 to 0-7. It would have been very easy for the team to have dropped the heads and lesser men would have. But not these bunch of young men are made of tougher stuff and refused to throw in the towel and fought and battled with everything in their fiber.

The half forward line of Shane Jordan, the aforementioned Eoin Greaney, and James Friel, covered every blade of grass on the pitch, while the inside forwards of Jack Lynch and Adam Boyle were constantly out in front of their men and played very intelligently. Kieran Dwyer again showed why we all think he will be a great Kerry minor, playing intelligently throughout and finishing with 1-3. Tommy Lynch’s dynamism has been missing for the senior team recently but he showed outstanding leadership and commitment throughout.

As the game progressed, Castle sensed the game was slipping from them and threw in sub after sub, and their fresh legs proved the difference between the sides, scoring 4 points in the last 5 minutes. The final score does not reflect an epic end to end game of high quality. There is a final league game being played this evening in south Kerry and in the (likely) event of a draw, St Pats minors quest to retain their county league title will come to an end.

Seniors

County League Division 3, Round 3
Keel 0-10 St Pats 1-07

St Pats and Keel shared the spoils in this Division 3, round 3 game played in Keel last Saturday under dry conditions after a wet start to the day. The first score of the game came just after 3 minutes from a free after Kieran Hurley was fouled by Keel’s Donal O’Neill. Kieran stepped up and took the free himself to register the first score. Keel’s first point came in the 6th minute also from a free by no other than, Gary Sayers.

This was followed by another free for Keel, pointed by Aaron Murphy. The highlight of this half came mid-way into the game when a kickout from Keel’s Stephen Cahillane was touched down by Mike O’Sullivan in midfield and the breaking ball from that was picked up by a Pats player who passed it to Adrian Greaney, and ate up the ground in 5 strides to release Sean Dowling for a beautiful point. A couple of frees from Kieran Hurley nudged our noses in front but Keel kept in touch with a couple of points from play and free. St Pat’s Kevin O’Shea kicked the last point of the half for a scoreline of Keel 0-5 St Pats 0-6.

Keel started the second half in blistering form, scoring 4 unanswered points all from frees to lead by 3 points. St Pats first score of the half was a goal by Kieran Hurley who was fed a quick ball after Tommy Lynch was fouled to level matters once again. There was a 10 minute spell where neither team scored but this was broken by Gary Sayers who pointed from a free to hand Keel a solitary point lead.

St Pats threw everything at Keel so as to salvage something from this game that was littered with points from frees and their efforts paid off when a Pats player was fouled with less than a minute to go. The resulting pressure free was scored by Kieran Hurley to level the match. This was a fair result as both teams did not deserve to lose.
Referee Jim O’Connor (Scartaglen) had a good enough game but there were too many frees given

St.Pats Team:

Paudie Bailey, Paudie O’Connor, Andy Byrne, Jake Foley, Liam Poff, Kevin O’Shea (0-1), Adrian Greaney, Paul McMahon, Michael O’Sullivan, Kieran Hurley (C) (1-5, 5f), Brendan Poff, Sean Dowling (0-1), Gary Savage, Willie Hurley, Liam O’Suillivan
Subs used: Tommy Lynch for Gary Savage, Brendáin Savage for Willie Hurley

Our next game is this Sunday, the 17th April away to Duagh in the Junior Club football Championship. Throw-in is at 2.30pm.

Kerry Badminton Association News

What an action packed Badminton week it was, the final week of competition in the Kerry Badminton Association programme in the 2015/2016 season. Four league finals were decided plus the last instalment of the Kerry Championships which were the the mixed doubles championships for divisions 2 and 4 with both the league and championship competitions sponsored by CPC.IE

CHAMPIONSHIPS;

Kerrt Div 4 Mixed Dubles Champs-08-04-206
Junior Griffin (Chairman), presenting the Division 4 Cup to the Winners of the Division 4 Mixed Doubles Championships, L/R Michelle Beazley, (Kingdom), Jamie Elliott (Moyvane), along with Runners Up, Hilda Harmon, & Liam Barry (Killarney).
Friday night last was the closing night of the CPC.IE sponsored Badminton championships for another season and what a finale it proved to be with 12 pairs taking part in the division 2 mixed doubles championships and no less than 26 pairs competing in the division 4 mixed doubles championships.
Like most events in recent times the Moyvane club held a strong hand in last Friday nights championships and indeed, the division 2 final proved to be an all Moyvane confrontation with the sister and brother teenage pairing of Niamh and James Flaherty taking on Elaine Hudson and Donnacha Moloney..
The first set saw the Flaherty’s take a 8-3 lead but Hudson /Moloney fought back to be level at 10 all and indeed they went in front to lead at 16-14 but the sides were again all square at 16 all and also at 20 all which called for the tie break but it was the sister and brother partnership that took the set by 22-20.
The second set saw the sides level on no less than 5 times but it was now Hudson/Moloney that was setting the pace and eventually the set was theirs on the scoreline of 21-17 to level the match at one set each. The start of set number 3 saw the sides again level at 2 points each but it was in this set that James Flaherty showed his vast talent with his back hand cross shots being the feature of the game and most of them were winning points and with Niamh prominent around the net and despite the best efforts of Hudson/Moloney the Flaherty’s went on to take the title by 21-12.
What a year on the championship front James Flaherty is having as Friday nights win completes the treble championships for this player in division 2 this year having already won the doubles with Castleisland’s Jonathan Keane whilst Niamh Flaherty won her second championship of the year on Friday night as she had earlier won the division 3 ladies doubles with Listowel’s Michelle Kearney.

In the Badminton report last week it featured 3 pairs of players who had won the double treble, that is for two players to win the treble within the same division in the same season. You can now make that 4 pairs of winners of the double treble as James Flaherty of Moyvane and Maeve Twomey of Killarney did this rare achievement also, in division 3, just two years ago in 2014. In the mens doubles in 2014 James Flaherty was partnered by Jonathan Keane, Castleisland and in the ladies doubles Maeve Twomey was partnered by Lisa Sayers of Annascaul.

After some hectic play and long rallies throughout this huge competition the division 4 final on Friday night was contested by the Killarney pairing of Hylda Harman and Liam Barry and they were opposed by the Castleisland/Moyvane pairing Michelle Beazley and Jamie Elliott. With Miss Beazley busy as a bee and foraging around the net with great effect coupled by the very talented Elliott who policed the rear of the court in fine style the Castleisland/Moyvane pairing were always in command of both sets despite the gallant effort of the Killarney pairing and captured the title by 21-10; 21-14.

LEAGUE FINALS

The Ballyheigue Club hosted the division 3 and 5 league finals on Tuesday night last before a large attendance and it was Moyvane against Killarney in both events. Extraordinary, both clubs were going for five in a row in these two divisions, and more extraordinary still, both clubs achieved this fantastic goal.

In the division 3 final Moyvane won the first 3 games to put themselves in a strong position to retain their crown but the Killarney mens doubles pairing kept their hopes alive when winning a thrilling encounter, however the title stayed in Moyvane when their first mixed doubles pairing of Carmel Hudson and James Sheehan overcame Killarney’s Sandra O’Connor and Brian McSweeney in a close 3 set hard fought battle.
Moyvane; Niamh Flaherty, Helen Brown, Fran Collins (capt) Carmel Hudson, Timmy Noonan,James Sheehan,John Mulvihill, Chris McCarthy.
Killarney; Niamh Hickey, Siobhan O’Donoghue, Sam Hayes,Sandra O’Connor, Ger O’Connor, Brian McSweeney (capt), Kieran Crehan,
In a most exciting division 5 final Killarney took the ladies singles but Moyvane levelled by winning the mens singles. The same pattern followed in the even doubles matches. Killarney took the ladies doubles in a 2 set encounter but in a thrilling mens doubles match Moyvane levelled the tie again by taking a close third set by 21-18.
It was the 1st and 3rd mixed doubles games that swung the game in favour of Killarney but both matches had to go to the third set for decision and the honour of clinching the title for Killarney went to Rebecca Murphy and 75 year young John O’Halloran, what an outstanding example this man is for players many years his junior.
Killarney; Rebecca Murphy, Jessica Galvin, Elaina Galvin, Diam Fitzgerald (capt), Daniel O’Connor, Jordan O’Connor
Moyvane; Marie Kennelly, Aoife Curtin, Charlotte Quirke,Olivia Quirke, Liam Greaney, Michael Collins, Oliver Carmody (capt), Michael Nolan

The action switched to the Community Centre Castleisland the following night Wednesday April 6th for the division 2 and 4 League finals. The division 2 decider was between Killarney and Moyvane whilst the div. 4 decider once again saw Moyvane in contention, this time against the South Kerry standard bearers, Iveragh.

The opening match in the division 2 final was the ladies singles and what a wonderful 3 set encounter this proved to be with Killarney’s Sinead Galvin, the current Munster junior champion, taking on 15 year old Niamh Flaherty. The Killarney lady won by 13-21; 22-20; 21-14 but that’s as good as it got for Killarney as a classy Moyvane side reeled in the next 4 games to give them a 4-1 victory.

Moyvane; Niamh Flaherty, Elaine Hudson, Jeanelle Griffin, Carmel Hudson, James Flaherty, Timmy Duggan (capt), Donnacha Moloney, Donie Enright

Killarney; Sinead Galvin; Maeve Twomey, Jennifer Keane, Peggy Horan (capt) John O’Brien, Paudie Horan, Evan Horan , Kieron Crehan

The play in the division 4 final was almost a carbon copy of the division 2 decider. The ladies singles game between Moyvane’s Louise Behan and Christine Quirke of Iveragh was a close hard fought match with the Iveragh lady coming from behind in the second set to clinch victory by 21-9; 21-17, but like the division 2 final a talented Moyvane side took over and they captured the next 4 games to forge a 4-1 victory.

Moyvane; Louise Behan, Michelle Corridan, Denise Collins, Eileen McCarthy, Jamie Elliott, Padraig Kearney (capt), Timmy Flaherty, John Newman
Iveragh; Christine Quirke, Sue Weatherill, Susan O’Connell, Mike Reardon (capt), Joe Daly, Sean Bradley

The overall League programme saw a Moyvane domination once again with the club capturing the divisions 2,3 and 4 titles and Killarney retaining the division 5 crown. All 4 teams will represent Kerry in the Munster Club finals to be played in Limerick on Sunday next April 17th and best wishes is extended to each player of all 4 reams.

MUNSTER DOUBLES FINALS

Sunday last saw the winners of each Munster County doubles championships congregate in Limerick to define the overall Munster champions and what a wonderful day it proved to be for the Kerry competitors with many gold and silver medals crossing the Kerry border. Played on the round robin basis the following are the Kerry results
In the Grade C section Tom Bourke and Eric Nelligan won silver, pipped by 1 point for the gold in Grade D, Fergal Hannon and James Leane won the gold; and also in Grade D Elaine Hudson and Maeve Twomey captured silver in the Ladies doubles.

Grade F saw Carmel Hudson and Mariusz and Tusinski win gold whilst in Grade H Kerry’s Lillian Holmes and James O’Mahony won gold in the mixed doubles. Castleisland’s Michelle Beazley,, who on Friday night last won the Kerry division 4 mixed doubles with Moyvane’s Jamie Elliott, is a student in Cork and recently won the Cork grade G ladies doubles championships and on Sunday last, representing Cork she won gold in the Munster Grade G doubles with her partner on the day, Kilkenny native, Cait Broderick.
Overall, it was a good day for Kerry Badminton.

SENIORS

Ballymac played host to Moyvane on Saturday evening at 6.30 in the third round of the county league. Heavy rain on the previous days made underfoot conditions heavy. The home side had two points on the board through a free from Vincent Horan and a point from play by Eanna Reidy before Moyvane registered a score. This came from their midfielder Dan Leahy. Shane O Reilly was quick to respond with a point a minute later.

Moyvane levelled matters with points from Colin Enright and Dan Leahy. Ballymac dominated the next ten minutes , scoring four points , all from the nippy corner forward Vincent Horan,  one from play and three from frees..Moyvane rallied and scored three points from play , these coming from Aiden Keane , Kevin Kennelly and Timmy Noonan. Two more points for the home side from Cian Counihan and Vincent Horan left the half time score at  Ballymac 0.9 to Moyvane 0.6.

The home side started the second half with two points from play from Jonathan Keane and Cathal De Lacy. Moyvane’s full forward , Timmy Noonan  cancelled out these with a point from play and a point from a free. Vincent Horan pointed a free for Ballymac before Daniel O Shea and Timmy Noonan exchanged points. Moyvane failed to score in the last twelve minutes while Ballymac tagged on two more points from the boot of Shane O Reilly and Cathal De Lacy.  The final score was Ballymacelligott  0.15  Moyvane  0.9

U16 Central District Game: Ardfert v Ballymacelligott

Ballymac u16’s travelled to Ardfert on Monday night to take on their very physical under 16 team. From the outset Ardfert were in control. In the first minute a long ball from the hosts into the Ballymac square was punched to the Ballymac net by Daragh Courteney. Ballymac were quick to respond with a goal from corner forward Daire Keane in the second minute. This was followed by two more points from David Rogers and Cillian Gallagher.

Nathan Driscoll and Cillian Gallagher exchanged points. Halfway through the first half, Ardfert’s ace forward, Gavin Dooley broke through the Ballymac defence to score their second goal. Thomas Healy increased their lead with a point form play. Ballymac registered three more scores before half time with a pointed free from Daire Keane and two points from play from Cillian Gallagher.

Ardfert had three more scores to leave the score at half time Ardfert 2.6 to Ballymac 1.6. On the restart Daire Keane and Thomas Healy exchanged points. Ten minutes into the second half Barry Lyons was pulled down in the Ardfert square and Josh O Keeffe made no mistake with the penalty. The sides were level for only one minute when Ardfert edged in front again with a point from Gavin Dooley.

The game changed completely in the next five minutes when Ardfert scored two goals and a point. Both sides managed one more point each before the final whistle to leave the final score at Ardfert 4.9 to Ballymac 2.8. Ballymac tried very hard throughout this game but found Ardfert to be very physical and fit.

BALLYMAC TEAM: Darragh Lynch , Eoin Culloty , Tadgh Brick , Kevin Lenihan, Diarmuid Lynch , Liam O Brien, Cathal Dunne, Joshua O Keeffe, James McDonnell, Daire Connor Chawke , David Rogers , Barry Lyons , Daire Keane, Cillian Gallagher , Dylan McHuge. County League Div 2A Castlegregory 4-13 Ballymac 1-8 Played in very testing conditions for football our hosts managed the elements better than our boys. We had the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and played some nice football. We put over a number of points from Dylan Dunne Moriarty, Darragh Broderick, Jonathan Lowe.

Dara Leen and Sean Polman. A goal by Darragh Broderick was well taken. However our hosts were keeping the scoreboard ticking over also and one knew the change at half time would cost us as we didn’t register enough scores ourselves. HT 2-3 to 1-7 Ballymac ahead by 1.

That was as good as it got as Castlegregory with the wind at their backs took full advantage. They went ahead after two goals in quick succession. Our boys didn’t give up and our defence did some great work to keep us in the game. Our sole score in the second half was a point taken by Aidan. Conditions worsened as the half went on and favoured Castle even more. They added some long range points to run out comfortable winners. FT 4-13 to 1-8 Our next game is away to Fossa.

Panel: Eoghan Kenny, James Bailey, Bryan Cassidy, Ciaran Brosnan, Adam Joy, Adam Kelly, Darragh Sweeney, Cian Godley, Darragh Broderick 1-2, Denis Brosnan, Jonathan Lowe 0-1, Dara Leen 0-1, Aidan o’ Brien 0-1, Dylan Dunne Moriarty 0-2, Sean Horan, Cathal Culloty, Sean Polman Daamen 0-1, Tim Polman Daamen.

U12 CAILINI

The girls began their season with a trip to Abbeydorney to play the locals in the North Kerry league division 1. The home side were much stronger on the night and ran out 6-06 to 2-06 winners. We followed that up with a game away to Castleisland Desmonds. The girls put in a very good performance and ran out 3-06 to 0-02 winners.

On Tuesday night last the girls played Legion in Killarney and came away with a win on a 2-05 to 1-02 scoreline. Full match reports are available on www.ballymacgaa.com. Next up is a trip to Beaufort on Tuesday evening at 7pm in the county league preliminary round 2.

U14 CAILINI

Our U14 Ladies team travelled to Fossa GAA Club in Killarney on Sunday evening for round two of the County League Division 2. After what was a glorious day, the weather for the second week running, took a turn for the worst and the game was played in appalling conditions. Credit to Fossa for facilities that coped well with the deluge although ball handling was very difficult.

The first half was dominated by Ballymac up front, quick ball in saw Cora Savage and Emily O’ Donohue notch up some fine scores between them while Kate O’Connor popped up twice in two minutes to poach two goals, the first a loose ball fisted to the net after Fossa’s keeper saved a point blank shot from Emily O’Donoghue & the second a tap in after some link up play with Cora Savage on the edge of the box.

Ballymac however were not having it all their own way and with the hosts boasting two Kerry U14’s in Maud Kelly & Sara Sheehan Fossa laid siege in the Ballymac half for periods but some great defending and some excellent goalkeeping saw Ballymac go into the interval with a comfortable 5 point lead. Ballymac 2-04 Fossa 0-5.

In a game of two halves Fossa, who emerged the hungrier, continued where they left off in the first half and again laid siege on the Ballymac goal. It was Fossa’s two aforementioned Kerry Girls who spearheaded the Fossa come back and once they got their nose in front, they never looked back. Ballymac to their credit fought right to the end and kicked four unanswered points in the closing stages. Through on goal on a couple of occasions the Fossa rearguard held fast to deny Ballymac the goals they needed to launch a comeback. Time eventually ran out and Fossa were deserved winners on the night. Final Score 4-10 to 2-08.

Scorers on the night for Ballymac were Kate O’Connor 2-0, Roisin Long 0-3, Cora Savage 0-2, Emily O’Donoghue 0-2 & Caroline Hurley 0-1.  Best on the night were Roisin Long giving a towering display at fullback and when she was moved out the field in the latter stages she kicked three fine points, playing as a wing forward and later as a wing back. Cait Rice also rose to the occasion giving a determined performance.

Special thanks to our band of supporters who braved the harsh conditions two weeks running. Our next game is scheduled for Sunday 17th April at home to Scartaglen

U16 CAILINI

IT Tralee Lecturer Up For An IFTA Award This Weekend

IT Tralee lecturer, Bob Jackson.

A LECTURER from the IT Tralee will be hoping for success as his documentary film is in the running for an Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Award this Saturday night..

Bob Jackson, who lectures in the Creative Media department, is nominated in the Best Documentary category for the production work that he completed on ‘The Doctor’s Sword’.

The documentary, which is produced by Mr Jackson and directed by Gary Lennon, tells the story of how Aidan MacCarthy, a young doctor from Castletownbere, served in WW2 and the experiences that he had while there as a prisoner of war (POW). It also shows Mr MacCarthy’s daughter, Nicola, as she explores the origin of the samurai sword given to her father by a Japanese officer.

The documentary has been critically acclaimed by both critics and audiences and also had a run in a number of cinemas around the country, including Tralee Omiplex, last year.

Speaking to TraleeToday.ie at the Tralee premiere about the story, Bob said; “It’s a family story, but it’s a tragic story in what he endured. The story is the best story that I’ve ever heard about an individual. The things that he lived through, if you saw it in a Hollywood film, you’d think it was too far fetched. The fact though that all of it is documented and it’s all absolutely true, it’s incredible. He was the only person to survive both Dunkirk and Nagasaki, he was in a hole in a ground for both of them. It’s amazing.” (previous story here)

The IFTA awards will be presented this Saturday, April 9, at a star studded ceremony at the Mansion House, Dublin.

The Churchill quiz team who came second in the All-Ireland Scór competition at the weekend.

THE Brothers Pearse Club (Cnoc na hEaglaise) Quiz Team finished in 2nd place in the Senior Scór All-Ireland final, which took place in ‘The Gleneagle’, Killarney, last Saturday, April 2.

The Churchill lads scored 68 out of 80, which was great scoring/answering, but they were pipped by the Offaly team from Fear Bán, who lost out to them last year.

The dedicated and hard-working Churchill quiz men of Mícheál Mag Fhionnbhair (Gaynor), Seán Ó Flaithearta’, Pól Ó Cullota, and Alex Ó Dónaill were so close to becoming winners, but nonetheless, it was a great achievement which adds to two ‘firsts’ (’14, ’15) from the team.

Their success is great for the Tralee/Naomh Breandán GAA Boards and a further boost for Scór in the Greater Tralee area.

Both the Senior and Juvenile Committees would like to extend sincere thanks to all of those who helped in both the organisation and running of the recent Feile bake sale held at the club. It was a great success and a credit to all those involved. It wouldn’t have been possible without all of the baked goods donated on the day and we would also like to extent our thanks for those. We also had two very successful bagpacking days at the Horan Centre Dunnes Stores. Thanks to Dunnes for having us and thanks to all of the girls and boys who manned the slots and also to the adults who supervised. Well done to all.

ADAMS of Tralee Ltd, the Mazda and Hyundai dealership in Tralee, has won the Carzone.ie sponsorship for their chosen local sports team, the Causeway GAA Hurling Club.

The lucky club recently received the sponsored kit, which consists of a set of branded jerseys and a new large gear bag for each player on the senior and intermediate team.

The business has a long-standing association with the Causeway GAA Club. This strong relationship was the basis for the dealership choosing to support the team for the Carzone.ie competition.

Noel O’Connor, sales manager of Adams of Tralee Ltd., said: “We want to extend our sincere thanks to Carzone.ie for their generous contribution with this great dealer competition. Adams of Tralee has a long involvement with the Causeway GAA Club and we are delighted to be able to support the teams in this way.”

“I’m involved in the club myself and I know how much this means to everyone involved. Our last set of jerseys were around 10 years old and we already have two wins from two in the new Carzone.ie supported kit – long may it continue!”, he added.

The competition is being run by Carzone.ie, who have been calling on car dealers nationwide to nominate their local sports team of choice. This sponsorship initiative will see a number of sports clubs receive their very own branded kit courtesy of their local car dealership over the next few months, giving car dealerships the opportunity to support their local community.

For further information on the competition or to download an application form visit Carzone.ie Sponsorship.

Churchill GAA Club News

rsz_1churchill_gaa_2U10/U8/U6:

Churchill U10s played in a County Board Blitz last Thursday in the John Mitchels complex. They played 3 games against Kerins O Rahillys, Scartaglin and An Gaeltacht. For our first outing of the year all players acquitted themselves very well and can be extremely proud of their performance. It was great to see so many parents in attendance also to support their children and the club.  Academy training continues as normal on Sunday mornings for the U6/U8/U10 age group.

U12s:

On a beautiful Sunday evening in our new pitch our Green team put in a great performance against a strong Ardfert team. There were great performances by all players in particular Ben Donnellan in defence, Eddie Mccarthy in Midfield and Oran Murphy in attack. It was our first game and everyone can be very proud of themselves.  After a great comeback in the second half Ardfert were deserving winners by a score of 5-05 to 5-02.

Our Black team put in a very strong performance and came up just short on a score of 4-09 to 4-03. In a great team performance, David Chute in goals and Gearoid O Connor in defence stood out along with Harvey Brosnan and Donagh Stephenson further up the field.

We are in Kenmare next Sunday evening for our 2nd league game.

U14:

Our U14 team struggled against a very strong Rathmore team losing out to a score of 4-10 to 9-15. They rallied hard and with continued hard work and training will still be in a strong position to represent the Club in the Feile in a group containing, Ballyduff, the 3rd team from Dublin and the 2nd team from Kildare with Churchill to host our guests from Kildare.

U16:

On Thursday evening our U16 put in a very impressive performance to run out comfortable winners against Glenebigh/Glencar/Cromane by a score of 1-20 to 0-03. Their next outing will be against Kerins O’Rahillys away on April 14th and training details will be communicated by the mentors.

Seniors.

In glorious sunshine, Churchill entertained Ballymac in round 2 of the County League on Sunday afternoon. Churchill came into the game on the back of an opening round defeat to Firies, while Ballymac were looking to continue winning ways following a win over Dr Crokes on the opening day. It was the visitors who started the brightest with 3 unanswered points from Vinny Horan (2) and wing back Luke Sweeny, before Sweeney struck for goal following a great run from defence. Churchill replied with two pointed frees, but Ballymac were in control in midfield with some fine fielding from Shane Dowling. Both sides registered two more points each before the break to leave the St Kieran’s club leading by 1-07 to 0-04 at halftime.

Ballymac continued where they had left of after the break with two points, the pick of them from fullback Mike Leen with a great score while off balance. Churchill responded with a freekick from Oisin O’Brien that was deflected into the net to give the hosts a glimmer of hope. Both sides then exchanged pointed frees, but Churchill had taken a hold in defence and midfield and were using the halfback line as a springboard for attack, with JJ Prior particularly effective. Churchill kicked 4 points on the trot from Oisin O’Brien (2), Mike O’Brien and substitute Fiachra Griffin, before Aidan Breen pointed for Ballymac with 10 minutes remaining.

Then, in a pivotal moment in the game, Cathal Rogers then won a ball for Churchill 40m from goal near the sideline and beat two men before firing an unstoppable shot to the back of the net to give Churchill the lead for the first time in the match. Con Counihan equalised for Ballymac with a beautiful point from distance, before both teams were reduced to 14 men in quick succession.

With time running out Micheal O’Brien broke up a Ballymac attack and the ball was fed to Micheal Brennan to coolly score the winning point from distance. This was cruel on Ballymac, who had led for much of the game, but credit is due to Churchill who never gave in despite being 8 points down early in the second half. Best for Ballymac were Luke Sweeny with 1-03 from wing back and Matt Galvin, while Oisin O’Brien, JJ Prior and Micheal Brennan impressed for Churchill. Final score Churchill 2-10 : Ballymac 1-12.

Churchill. Paul O’Sullivan, Mitchel Holland, PJ O’Mahony, Karl Sheehy, Cathal Rogers (1-00), Garret Walsh, JJ Prior, Ciaran Crowley, Jack O’Connell, Neil Collins-O’Brien, Matt Finnerty, Micheal Brennan (0-01), Ivan Parker (0-01), Michael O’Brien(0-03), Oisin O’Brien (1-04). Subs Fiachra Griffin (0-01) for O’Connell, Pa McCarthy for Collins-O’Brien.

Ballymac. Paudie Laide, Liam Dunne, Mike Leen (0-01), TJ Casey, Cian Counihan (0-01), Con Reynolds, Luke Sweeny (1-03), Matt Galvin, Shane Dowling, Shane O’Reilly, Jonathon Keane (0-01), Eanna Galvin, Paudie McCarthy (0-01), Aidan Breen (0-02), Vinny Horan (0-03).

So it’s ‘first come, first served’.

1916 PROJECTS COMPETITION:

Our thanks to Adrienne McLoughlin who submitted the following Report and whose brilliant photographs of the event can be seen on our website:-

Connolly Park residents held a Commemoration Mass (celebrated by Fr. Patsy Lynch) in the Clubrooms on Easter Monday, followed by food and refreshments for all present

A projects competition based on the theme “1916 Rising”, for younger members of the community, was held in the Clubhouse also. Local Politician, Toireasa Ferris, had the tough job of selecting the winners. All entrants received a prize but the first 3 places and prizes of a Tablet, signed Kerry Jersey and signed football, respectively, were awarded to: 1. Nia Ní Chíarba 2. Dara Ó Sé 3. Saoirse Ní Mhuircheartaigh.

The committee also held a raffle for 3 Easter Hampers (won by Paul O’Connor) and the funds raised will be used for the Senior Citizens Party later in the year. Newly elected T.D. Michael Healy-Rae also made an appearance at the gathering as well as some other local politicians, including Pa Daly, Norma Foley and Sam Locke.
Well done to the organising committee – Michael and Mary Hurley, Mary Whelan, Annette Carmody, Marian Clifford, Bernie Somers and Nora O’Connor.

SENIOR FOOTBALL:

Our next Co. League outing will be another home game, this time against newly-promoted Kenmare, in round 3. The game is due to go ahead on this Saturday evening (9th April) at 6.30pm. The last time both sides met in the League was 17 years ago when we were both in Division 2 in that 1999 season.

We won that game in Kenmare on 3rd April (0-13 to 1-7) and we lined out as follows:- Tommy Naughton, Eddie Dowling, George Jordan, Kieran Browne, Denis Sayers, Cormac Kennedy, John Walsh, Peter Quillinan, William Kirby (0-1), Michael Hogan (0-4), Darren Aherne (0-4), Donal McEvoy (0-2), Darragh Long, Billy Sheehan (0-2), Kieran Kelliher. Subs used: Pat Slattery (27m), Pat Costello (52m).

And look at the connections between then and now. Tommy Naughton, John Walsh and William Kirby now with today’s SF Management team, with William also playing along with Darragh Long; George Jordan on the 1999 team and his son, Conor a regular on today’s team; Kieran Kelliher’s son, Shane playing with the Minors now and Peter Quillinan’s brother, Wayne managing the Minors.

BEST OF LUCK: to the Kerry U21 Footballers, including our own Greg Horan and Michael O’Donnell, in their Munster Final clash with Cork in Austin Stack Park on this Thursday evening (7th April) at 7.30pm. This will be the 55th Final since its inception in 1962 (and that Final was won by Kerry with Cork the opposition).

In all, the sides have met each other in 21 Finals with Kerry coming out on top on 13 occasions and 8 victories for Cork. Overall, however, both sides currently share the Roll of Honours with 25 titles each (out of the 54 Finals played to date). So it’s all to play for on Thursday evening.

B FOOTBALL:

Our B Team also have a home game, against Rathmore, in Round 3 of Div 5 of the County League. The game is fixed for this coming Sunday (10th April) at 2pm..

MINOR FOOTBALL:

With three back games to be played as we write (Firies .v. Dr. Crokes; Firies .v. Kerins O’Rahillys and Austin Stacks v Dr. Crokes), five of the six Div. 1 teams are still in contention for the four semi final places. Two of the three back games are fixed for this week but there is still no date fixed for the third outstanding fixture, that’s our home game against Dr. Crokes.

CONGRATULATIONS:

to St. Brendan’s College (Killarney) on winning the Hogan Cup last Saturday and also well done to Ferbane who won the Paddy Drummond Cup. And of course well done to both Kerry teams – the footballers (including own Kieran Donaghy) who have qualified for the NFL semi final (and best of luck to them as they play Roscommon in that semi final at the weekend) – and the hurlers on another brilliant victory at the weekend which guarantees their Div 1B status for the 2017 NHL season.

Kerry Badminton Association News

Badminton AssociationThe penultimate rounds of the CPC.IE sponsored Kerry Badminton County Championships took place at the Killarney Sports Centre on Friday night last and what a wonderful night of Badminton action it proved to be. Titles up for grabs were the mixed doubles championships for divisions 1,3 and 5 and with almost one hundred players competing between the 3 divisions the whole programme took almost 4 hours to complete in this wonderful 8 badminton court venue.

Kerry Div 5 Mixed Double Champs, 01-04-2916
The Winners of the Division 5 Kerry Mixed Doubles Championships James O’Mahony (Causeway) Lilian Holmes (Ballyheigue) along with Runners Up Olivia Hanrahan, MichealCollins (Moyvane).

The division one decider saw its own bit of Kerry Badminton history being made. In this final the champions of the past two seasons Mary Falvey and Eric Nelligan both of the Kingdom Club, Castleisland were confronted by Ciara O’Connor (Dingle) and Tom Bourke (Kingdom).

This proved to be a very close hard fought battle but the overall standard of play did not live up to expectations with the normal long hard fought rallies one would expect from these players conspicuous by their absence. Set number one was score for score with the sides level at 7 all, 13 all, 14 all and 16 all but O’Connor/ Bourke finished the stronger and won the set by 21-17.

The second set was almost a carbon copy of the first with the lead changing sides several times but the sides were level at 4 all, 6 all and 7 all. Falvey/ Nelligan began to control the game at this point and led by 12-9 but point number 11 for O’Connor/Bourke resulted from the best smash of the match by Bourke which helped his side to be level again at 13 all.

It proved again to be point for point with the pairs again level at 14 all, 16 all and 17 all but now it was the turn of the champions elect, O’Connor and Bourke to dominate the game and they went to a 20-17 lead with point number 19 being a classic passing smash shot from Bourke and they eventually won the set and title on the scoreline of 21-18
Where the Kerry history was made was that it was the first time at division 1 level that two players had completed the treble of championship wins in the same division within the same season.

Both O’Connor and Bourke had already won their respective singles and doubles titles this season, Miss O’Connor with Edel Broderick in the ladies doubles and Bourke with Eric Nelligan in the mens doubles but for a double treble to be won within the same division in the same season is a rare occurrence. In the Kerry jubilee book published in 2011 the records show that this feat of the double treble being won within the same division has only been accomplished twice before between the years of 1968 and 2011.

The double treble was captured in 1973 by Listowel’s Maura Kenny and Sean Comerford in the Beginners grade and in 1990 by Killorglins Dolores Doyle and Colm Kennedy at the division 3 grade so Ciara O’Connor and Tom Bourke are only the third pair ever to achieve this double-treble feat and the first to do so at division 1.

Both the division 3 and 5 finals were classic 3 set encounters. In the division 5 final the Moyvane pairing of Olivia Hanrahan and Michael Collins took on the Ballyheigue/Causeway pairing of Kilkenny native Lillian Holmes and James O’Mahony. The first set was a close well fought game which saw the Moyvane pairing just edge the verdict by 21-18.

The second set was equally hard fought. Ballyheigue and Causeway may be hurling rivals over the years but Ms Holmes and O’Mahony certainly gelled together on the badminton court last Friday night.

The sides were level at 17 points each but it was the Ballyheigue/ Causeway pairing that finished the stronger and won the set by 21-19. That third and final set saw the sides level at 9 all but from there on it was Holmes/ O’Mahony that took control of the game with the cross court smash shots by Ms Holmes being a feature of the game and each and every one of them proved to be winning points which saw this Ballyheigue and Causeway combination win the County title by 21-14 in that third and final set to the delight of their very many supporters.

The division 3 championship had 19 pairs competing and this final was the last one of the night to be played after over 4 hours of action The pairs who battled their way to this final were Maggie Prendeville and recent mens singles winner Aidan McCarthy representing the Castleisland Club and their opponents were Carmel Hudson Moyvane, and Polish native Mariusz Tusinski who now resides in Tralee and is a member of the local County club, indeed just a few weeks ago Mariusz won the division 3 mens doubles title with Moyvane’s James Sheehan.

In a tight first set it was the Moyvane /Tralee combination that came good winning by 21-15 but a tighter second set the Castleisland pairing turned the tables and levelled the tie winning by 21-17. In a frantic third se decider the sides were level at 6 all and at 10 all but then the Castleisland pair hit a purple patch and led by 18-13 and at 19-16. It looked all over but how many times have we heard the catch phrase of”Its not over til the fat lady sings”.

Slowly Hudson/Tusinski narrowed the gap and suddenly the sides were level at 19 all and the tension was electrifying. Hudson/ Tusinski went to match point at 20-19 but fair play to Castleisland they fought back to level the set at 20 each with now who ever would go 2 points in front would win the title and that proved to be Carmel Hudson and Mariusz Tusinski who won the set and title by 22-20.

As stated it was the second championship win of the current season for Tusinski and the third title at this division for Mrs Hudson, who won her first division 3 mixed title back in 1994 with Listowel’s Tom McElligott but no doubt, the gallant Castleisland pairing of Maggie Prendeville and Aidan McCarthy will be kicking themselves for letting this one slip away.

John Mitchels GAA Club News

MitchelsSENIOR TEAM:

John Mitchels played away to Castlemaine/Milltown in Round 2 of the Co. League last Saturday afternoon. Conditions were perfect for football as it was both calm and dry. Mitchels got off to a great start with Michael Wrenn being fouled in the square in the first few minutes of play and Wayne Duggan converting the penalty.

Castlemaine hit back with four unanswered points, 3 from play and one from a free. Mitchels levelled the game again in the 12th minute. Castlemaine scored a further point from play leaving the score 1-01 to 5 points in favour of Castlemaine.

Castlemaine dominated the 2nd quarter scoring 5 points, 3 from play and 2 from frees to Mitchels 1 point from Sean Moloney. With the game nearing the end of the 1st half, a high ball was kicked into the Castlemaine goal and Michael Wrenn deflected it into the net leaving the half time score 2-02 to 0-10.

Castlemaine opened the 2nd half scoring with 2 points from frees to Mitchels 1 point from a free from Alan O’Donoghue. Castlemaine added 3 points from frees leaving the score line 2-03 to 0-15 in favour of Castlemaine.
Mitchels rallied in the final quarter with Lawrence Bastible kicking a long range point which was followed by a Castlemaine point from a free. Further pressure from the Mitchels yielded a well taken goal by Alan O’Donoghue but it was too late to change the final outcome Castlemaine/Milltown 0-16 John Mitchels 3-04.

U14 BOYS:

We travelled to Gneeveguilla last Wednesday for our first game of the County League. We started very slowly and never got into gear in the first half. We trailed 2-9 to 1-4 at the break with the goal coming from Tristan Kirwan. We started the second half brightly and took over for the first 10 minutes of the half with a penalty from Dara Caplis, a well taken Conor Commane goal and another from Tristan Kirwan leaving us in front by 3 points. However Gneeveguilla upped it from there on and we had no answer in the end.
Final score Gneeveguilla 4-20 John Mitchels 4-7.

Best on the night were Robert Kerins and Cormac Clifford at the back, Jordan Mason gave his all in midfield and up front Sean Dillane and Dara Caplis worked tirelessly. Next week we are at home to Listowel where we would be hoping for a big improvement with our first game behind us.

Tralee Parnells CrestAll ages back training:

Outdoor hurling commenced Friday the 1st at the I.T North campus AstroTurf 7 to 8 pm for under 6 boys and girls, under 8 boys and girls, under 10 boys.  All other hurling and camogie teams trained in Caherslee at the same 7 pm time.

Race Night 16 Apr:

Parnells main fundraiser of the year takes place on the 16th of April in the Fels point hotel at 8.30pm, club members will be selling horses for €30 each.  This entitles you to entry into one race where a cash prize will be won by the winner of each race.  Please support the club by buying a horse and also to attend race night itself for a fun filled event in Fels Point hotel. Contact 085 1355566 or traleeparnells@gmail.com or get in touch with any club officer, for details on buying a horse or if your business want to support the event.

Camogie Under 12s for Semple Stadium:

Parnells under 12 girls are hugely looking forward to playing a blitz against teams from Munster counties, on the hallowed turf at Thurles on Saturday the 9th of April.

Under 10s at Austin Stack Park:

There was a fantastic turnout of our Parnells under 10 boys and girls, over 30 of them played an exhibition game at halftime of the senior hurling game that saw a great Kerry victory over Laois last Saturday April 2nd in Austin Stack Park, Tralee.  There is a nice photo of this impressive crew and mentors on our Parnells face book page at Parnells Facebook

Under 14s:

Tralee Parnells  under 14s played Crotta O’Neill’s in round 2 of the co.league on Saturday night. In an entertaining game played in excellent conditions, Parnells unfortunately  were defeated 2-10 to 1-06. The game was in the balance at half time with Parnells  matching their opponents. The team showed great spirit throughout but their inability to take scoring opportunities cost them dearly.  Two late goals for Crotta sealed the victory.

Parnells should be happy with their display and will take a lot of positives from the game.  Attendance at training and player attitude is vital to this panel if we are to progress. Saturday’s  game was another step forward in developing our under 14s. The team played well in general with the defense in particular very good. Tadhg Reen and Cian Cronin played very well and Jonathan Lowe was excellent at wing back.Terence Carmody shone also and Luke Chester was the best forward on view. Well done to the team on their display.

Minors:

Parnells minors lined out for their first 2016 encounter, a North Kerry fixture vs Causeway.  2015 was the first year our young club had a minor presence of any kind, so it was a great achievement and milestone to field a team that has more older players this year, with not as much need to rely on our under 16 squad.  The advantage in higher average age and greater seasoning of the visitors to Caherslee was evident from the start, but the Parnells battled on to the finish.  If we can relocate a few lost sheep and emulate the commitment and leadership shown by several of our players in this fixture, we can continue to improve and to compete at more demanding levels.

Under 16s:

The under 16 game vs Abbeydorney has been rearranged for Sunday 10th April in Caherslee at 6.30pm.

Online Registration:

We strongly encourage all Parnells members to please complete 2016 child and adult registrations online.  This reduces the burden on our volunteers of manually transcribing paper forms and handling cash.  To register online, simply visit: register.

Ballymacelligott GAA Club News

Ballymac CrestSENIORS

Our Senior team travelled to Churchill on Sunday afternoon last for Round 2 Co. League game which was played in near perfect conditions.  Ballymac started the better and were fully deserving of their 1 – 5 to 0 – 1 lead mid way through the first half with Vincent Horan 0 – 2, Jonathan Keane 0 – 2 and Shane O Reilly 0 – 1 pointing while wing back Luke Sweeney got forward to find the net.

Ballymac continued to dominate and at half time were fully value for their 1 – 7 to 0 – 4 lead.  Aidan Breen and Vincent Horan adding the extra scores.  The lead was further extended with points from defenders Luke Sweeney and Mikey Leen and we seemed set for victory.

However, in the complete turn around Churchill were to out score us 2 – 6 to 0 – 3 in the time remaining, their winning point coming at the last kick of the game.  Final score Churchill 2 – 10  Ballymac 1 – 12.  Our lads will be very disappointed to lose this game which they controlled for 40 minutes, they have a chance to get their season back on track on Saturday evening next when we host Moyvane at 6.30 pm.  Please come and support the lads.

MINORS

BALLYMAC 2-10 CASTLEISLAND DESMONDS 2-08

We are through to a County Final after this victory over local rivals Desmonds in Castleisland. An outstanding display by centre back Micháel Reidy and a fine contribution from our subs helped us to this narrow victory. Once more we got off to a poor start and were 2-03 to 0-01 down midway through the half. Darragh Regan our only scorer. Robert O Dowd and Darragh Regan combined and put Tomás O Connor through for a goal to begin our revival. A fine block by James Mc Donnell led to a Liam O Malley point. Micheal Hoare pointed from a pass by Tomás and Desmonds also pointed to leave the half time score Ballymac 1-03 Desmonds 2-04.

Josh O Keeffe, Daire Keane and Tadhg Brick were introduced at half time and each helped turn the game in our favour. Desmonds pointed on the restart and Darragh Regan pointed from a free after Liam was fouled. Daire Keane somehow worked his way through a group of players and goaled.

Desmonds again pointed and Darragh Regan pointed from a free. Desmonds got two more points and did not score after that. Micháel Reidy, Daire Keane and Liam O Malley all pointed to tie the game with ten minutes remaining. With only a few minutes left Max O Brien soloed from his own half took a return pass from Robert O Dowd and pointed, an inspirational score from the captain.

Micheal Hoare was fouled and Darragh Regan converted the free and Ballymac had won four games in a row. A fantastic win but plenty to work on before the final .TEAM & SCORERS; Barry Lyons, Kevin O Connor, Eddie Rogers, Max O Brien(0-1), Gary Horan, Micháel Reidy(0-1), Chris Lowe, Keelan Brosnan, David Long, Liam O Malley (0-2), Micheal Hoare(0-1), James Mc Donnell, Robert O Dowd, Darragh Regan(0-4), Tomás O Connor(1-0). Ballymac 5-11 Ballyduff 0-04

After nine weeks of training the boys were well prepared for their first league game of the year. They started in great fashion and continued throughout the sixty minutes. Cian and Dylan in midfield gave us a great platform to build from and Dylan finished the game with a personal tally of 2-6. Our defence were on top and keeping Ballyduff to very few chances. Our forwards played with some great inter-play and recycled the ball until the best scoring opportunity appeared. A great start to the year and we hope they can keep it up. Our next game is away to Castlegregory.

Panel: Eoghan Kenny, James Bailey, Bryan Cassidy, Ciaran Brosnan, Adam Joy, Adam Kelly, Darragh Sweeney, Cian Godley 0-1, Darragh Broderick 1-1,Denis Brosnan, Jonathan Lowe 2-0 ,Dara Leen 0-2, Aidan o’ Brien 0-1,Dylan Dunne Moriarty 2-6, Sean Horan, Cathal Culloty, Bryan Godley, Thomas o’ connor

County League Div 2B

Padraig O Sullivan captained the team on a historic evening for Ballymac. It being the first time the club has fielded a second team at U14 county level. It also proved to be the first time most of the team played full pitch dimensions. The first ten minutes proved to be very competitive with both teams getting to grips with the full pitch until Liam O Connor settled the nerves with a well taken goal.

Ballymac had most of the possession in the first half with Ryan McHugh and James Kenny having an outstanding half of football scoring one and two points respectively. Two goals from the home side and a well taken point from Garry Lynch left the teams level at half time on 2- to 1-4.

The second half started with the fitness and hunger of Ballymac proving to be the difference. In the middle of the pitch Donal Daly, Mark O Connor, Oisin Shanahan and Manuel Sanchez Delgado stole the show! They gave the forwards the platform to shine and shine they did! An early goal from Liam O Connor started the goal spree with two goals from Kieran Slattery- playing outfield for the first time in two years- and a goal apiece from James Kenny, Gary Lynch, Mark O Connor and Donal Daly putting Ballymac well ahead going into the final ten minutes.

Beaufort attempted to mount a comeback scoring four goals but were denied the comeback thanks to an excellent save from goalkeeper Adam O Keefe and tremendous displays in the backs by Luke O Connell, Mossie Brennan and Jamie Sugrue to leave the final score Beaufort 6-2 Ballymac B 8-5.

This performance was a credit to the team with the win being dedicated to Adam Wharton who turned up but was unable to play through sickness on the night..

FAOI 12

Blue Team

Ballymac Blue team travelled to Dr. Crokes for their first match in the U12 County League. Despite horrendous weather conditions the match proved to be a great game of football. Ballymac played well but goals win games and Dr Crokes scored goals at crucial periods in the game to go into a commanding lead mid-way through the second half. Great credit must be given to the players for not lying down. They kept bringing the fight to Dr.Crokes and pulled the game back to three points with five minutes to go. A late goal by the home team however effectively finished the game on a score line of Dr.Crokes 5-6 Ballymac 2-9

Gold Team

The under 11 gold team were unfortunately beaten in a close game  against Dr. Crokes in Killarney on Sunday night. Having played brilliantly for most of the game they conceded two late goals which proved costly. The experience at this level will bring the team on. Well done to the team on their performance.  Final  Score: Ballymac 3-9 Crokes 5-7

FAOI 10

Ballymac participated in the annual County U10 Go Games Blitz in splendid weather conditions at the John Mitchels Complex  last Thur 31st March. Being restricted to 9 a side Ballymac fielded a team from the oldest age group of players, playing 3 games within the hour. We had very good games against a very classy Listowel Emmets side, quickly followed by the natural footballers from An Ghaeltacht and to finish the day a local derby with Kerins O’Rahillys.

Ballymac competed extremely well in all games and were never out played in what were 3 fantastic games with a high level of skill and sportsmanship on display. Many thanks to the mentors Dave Long, Niall Gilroy and Tony Silles for their time on the day. The Ballymac Academy continued last Sunday the 3rd of April and we had a great turnout on the day.

REPORTS:

(U17) League ; Park Fc A 2-1 Castlegregory Celtic ;

A great result today against a physically stronger team Castlegregory our lads dug deep and pulled off a great win. On a good park pitch considering the heavy rain, we were one down at half time. Having failed to clear our lines from a corner and in spite of Dylan clearing off the line initially. Our defence did not deal with the second ball and against the run of play Castlegregory scored from close range. We did have a chance to equalise when Dylan was taken down in the box just before half time but their keeper saved the spot kick and Cian was unlucky to hit the post on the rebound.

Second half into the wind we continued to press and with a great team move we equalised after a passing movement starting with the keeper at the back finally arrived at Kiwi on the wing to provide a super cross and a super finish from Mirlind Xhemaili got us back on terms with 13 mins left in the game. Park pushed on trying to secure a win to take a step closer to securing a league semi-final spot when center back Aaron Roche went on a great run and hit a screamer from 25 yards in the 86th minute to seal a great win.

Park win the Plate at the Manchester Cup:

We began The Manchester Easter Cup in a 5 team group with an 0-0 draw against Qualitas Academy (Derbishire). Played in Parrswood School the pitches let a lot to be desired. They were very bumpy and made all players have to be very careful with their touch. We had the lion share of possession and created a number but a combination of nerves and bad luck meant that we were unable to find the net. So we had to settle for a point in our opening game.

In the second We beat Elite Academy (Cheshire), who would go to win the CUP, 1-0. Elite Academy were a really good side and the game. It’s self was a fairly even game with both teams creating good opportunities to score. Cianan Cooney got the goal when Elite had a corner it was whipped in from our left hand side and it it looked like they would just tap in the goal but DJ Griffin somehow grabbed the ball and when he looked up he saw Cianan making a run and without a moments hesitation he delivered the ball over there Elite Academy centre back as Cianan run through on goal he settled himself and tucked The ball past the The onrushing keeper in to the Far right corner. To give us the win.

We won the 3rd 3-0 vs PFA(Manchester). Leon Daly Cianan Cooney jack Twamley. Jack scored his first competitive goal for the club. And jack finally got to do his impression of Peter Crouch’s robot. It was a joy to see as Jack as being dreaming of this moment for the last couple of years. In our final group game Against Elite Pro Sports (London) we lost two nil but in truth we were tiring and 2-0 wasn’t a reflection on how well we’re playing and tiredness really played a factor when we conceded two late goals.

It looked like we could finish as the best Second place team with 7pts W2 D1 L1 and end up in the semi final of the Cup but the result in the last group game did not go in our favour when Elite Academy (Manchester)beat Elite Pro Sports (London) in the last game played on the day so that left us in 3rd place and we went in to Sundays fixtures in the plate semi final. The home town boys had a small advantage as they didn’t have far to travel.

So after the group ended Robert Vasiu Alan Brosnan and Graham Sheehy has been in outstanding form and have really been our best performers.

On to Sunday we went very optimistic after seeing the opposition in the previous day’s play. It was played in Platt lane Manchester City’s former training ground and it lived up to our expectation. It began with an indoor AstroTurf warm up area and It had two grass pitches that were absolutely top of the range. It also had two AstroTurf pitches one out door and one inside full size 4G pitch that would actually blow your mind it was so elegant. This is the place any young Footballer would want to be playing his football on.

Our lads took to the place like a duck to water and thrived under the new exquisite surroundings. We were to face Brampton Wanderers(Chesterfield). We started at 100mph and really dominated from start to finish. The game finished 1-0 when Graham Sheehy played in Robert Vasiu who steadied himself only to miscue his shot across the box only for the quick wits of Earnan Ferris who turned his miscue into the Brampton net and that was enough to settle the tie and book our place in the Plate final.

The boys showed great poise to close out the game. In the final we met Barton Rovers (Northwitch). The boys seemed to be brimming with confidence now and the had a different look on their faces a look of confidence that no one was going to stop us and it proved to be right. We again started brightly.

We were solid through the middle with Captain Sean McGrath and Alan Brosnan at CBs, Jack Twamley and Jamie Fitzgearld in the middle of the park. Out wide we were dangerous down both sides. Robert Vasiu (RM)and Graham Sheehy(RB) down the right and Earnan Ferris (LM) Cian Brosnan (LB) Blasting down the left. John o Connor (No.10) pulling the strings in behind Darragh Caplis (CF). And again we dominated the opposition being first to every ball winning the majority of 1v1 battles.

Again we took the lead when Earnan capitalized on Roberts pass to slot home the opening goal. And when Leon Gallagher replaced Darragh Caplis he scored with his first touch of the ball. After a pin point defense splitting pass from John Leon didn’t even need to break his stride and he placed his left footed shot past the hapless keeper, to round off the perfect end to the perfect weekend. With us going home with the Plate

After some truly majestic performances over the two days. We put it to the vote on who was our players of the tournament, Robert Vasiu and Graham Sheehy couldn’t be separated so both players ended up sharing the coveted accolade. That’s not taking away from everyone else as its a squad game and every played there part in making such a successful time.

Seniors

County League Division 3, Round 2

St Pats 1-10 Currow 3-14

This game was played under very overcast but calm conditions in Currow that saw Currow prevail over a St Pats side that were very wasteful. The game came to life from the first minute when Currow’s goalkeeper, Shane O’Leary was forced to make an important save from the very first attack.

The first point of the match was registered in the second minute by Currow’s Mike McCarthy who was fed the ball after great fielding by Seamus Scanlon. St Pats responded with a great point from almost the 45 metre line after an interchange of passes between Kevin O’Shea and Kieran Hurley. Currow’s first goal came in the 18thminute after a misplaced kick from Brendan Poff, intended for Liam Poff went astray and was capitalised on by John Buckley who spotted the on rushing Mike McCarthy who buried the ball at the back of the net.

Our best point of the half was scored by Gary Savage following a well-received pass from Willie Hurley, shifted left and then right before curling a beauty over the bar. Currow finished the half strongly by scoring another goal and another goal to finish the first half on a scoreline of 2-07 to St Pats’ 0-5.

The second half started with St Pats showing more intent and was evident when Mike O’Sullivan who came on for Sean Dowling out-muscled Seamus Scanlon to win the ball in midfield but the move yielded no dividend as another chance went begging. Currow’s Pa McCarthy scored the first point of the half after 3 minutes, and it was a beautiful, curling shot despite the best efforts of Adrian Greaney to block it.

This was followed by another couple of points from Mike McCarthy, who wrong footed Andy Byrne to kick over the bar, and John Buckley from a free after a foul on Seamus Scanlon. St Pats replied with a point of their own after 8 minutes from a free after a foul on Adrian Greaney, who was through on goal by John Daly. The resultant free was converted by David O’Callaghan. Credit must be given to the Currow backline, who defended astutely and when Paul McMahon scored from a high ball into the square by Sean Hayes, the damage had already been done in the first half leaving St Pats to rue all the bad wides.

Referee: Stephen Mulvihill (Ballylongford) had a good game overall.
St.Pats Team: John Fitzgerald, Eric Teahan, Andy Byrne, Paudie O’Connor, Sean Dowling, Adrian Greaney, Kevin O’Shea, Paul McMahon (1-0), Liam Poff, David O’Callaghan (0-2, 2f), Kieran Hurley (C) (0-5, 2f), Brendan Poff, Gary Savage (0-1), Willie Hurley, Liam O’Suillivan (0-1)
Subs used: Jake Foley for Eric Teahan, Mike O’Sullivan for Sean Dowling, Brendan Savage (0-1,1f)
for Willie Hurley, Sean Hayes for Kieran Hurley.

Our next game is this Saturday away to Keel in our third match of the County League. Throw-in is at 6.30pm.
