THE Government is to meet with Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) to progress plans for a landmark youth facility in Kerry.

Kerry TD Deputy Tom Fleming (Ind)  raised the matter of urgently-needed investment in youth services in Kerry in the Dáil.

He also welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Children, James Reilly, that over €30,000 would be provided to the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) to support its services in Killarney, Listowel and Castleisland.

“Minister Reilly said he was allocating €32,462 to Kerry Diocesan Youth Service to support services in Killarney, Listowel and Castleisland and to meet end-year budgetary commitments in 2015,” said Deputy Fleming.

Minister Reilly clarified to Deputy Fleming his position in relation to a recent submission made by the KDYS in relation to the development of a European Youth Centre in Kerry.

“I was delighted to learn that the Department of Children will meet with the KDYS project organisers to discuss the proposal and to identify the options that may be available to KDYS to progress the ambitious project,” Deputy Fleming explained.

The Department of Children provides funding to KDYS for youth services under the Special Projects for Youth scheme which supports projects that target young people who are disadvantaged including young Travellers and young people who are out of school and at risk of drugs, substance abuse or homelessness.
