REVIEW 2016: The News From December

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in November…

Stephen Stack.

• STEPHEN Stack has announced he is stepping down as Austin Stacks boss.

The Listowel native was in charge of the Rockies senior team for four years and brought them their first county championship in 20 years and led them to Munster Club Championship glory in that memorable 2014 season.

During his tenure, the senior team reached 13 competition finals, winning nine of them.

Pat Flanagan was announced as his successor later in December.

• GLENDUFF House reopened under a new name and the owner has big plans for another venture in Kerry next year.

Glenduff House, a Victorian hunting lodge, was recently purchased by Dingle native Michael O’Malley for €465,000. He announced work will begin in early 2017 on a new five star hotel located at the site of Bridge House, John Street, Dingle.

• IT was revealed that this year has been the worst year for patients waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry since the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation began keeping records back in 2006.

And this November was also by far the worst on record with 208 patients waiting, compared to 92 in the same month last year. Up to November, there has been 1,548 patients on trolleys up from 1,322 last year.

• IRISH Rugby International Ultan Dillane was in his hometown to launch a new book on international people living in Kerry.

‘Behind The Face’ is the remarkable and inspiring true life stories of 15 international people who have made Kerry their home.

The Tralee rugby star was on a break from training and returned home to launch the book at Siamsa Tire in Tralee.

• KERRY County Board announced the resignation of Ciarán Carey as manager of the Kerry Senior Hurling team in early December.

Two weeks later Fintan O’Connor was announced as his successor.

• KIERAN Donaghy’s ‘What Do You Think Of That’ won the Eir Sports Book Of The Year award.

Donaghy beat off competition from the likes of Paul O’Connell and Rob Heffernan to win the award which was announced in Dublin.  The winner receives a €1,500 cash prize, a specially commissioned trophy and €10,000 worth of TV advertising on eir Sport.

• THERE was a slight drop in the number of people signing on at the Tralee social welfare office in November according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Tralee’s Live Register figure for November fell by six to 4,439 which is a 12% drop on the same month in 2015. Countywide, the November figure was 10,172 people down 13% on the same time last year – a drop of 1,521.

• TRALEE Warriors secured a new sponsor to help them in their quest for success in top flight basketball.

The Club has enjoyed a most successful run to date in their first season in the National Men’s Superleague and Garveys Group were announced as the main sponsor for the rest of the season after Irish TV had to pull out.

• THE fourth Tralee 5km Santa Fun Run drew a massive crowd of runners in perfect conditions.

There was glorious sunshine at the start of the run at the Tralee Bay Wetlands where around 800 people registered, thus raising vital funds for the Barretstown charity.

• IT was revealed that Kerry GAA star Aidan O’Mahony will swap the football boots for dancing shoes next month as he has been announced as one of the participants in RTE’s Dancing With The Stars.

Amanda Byram and Nicky Byrne will present the first series of the show, which will air on RTÉ One for 12 weeks from 6.30pm on Sunday, January 8.

• CHRISTMAS came early to 40 members of Tralee Credit Union through their Members Car Draw.

Marion Galvin from Balloonagh Estate in Tralee won a brand new 171 Nissan Pulsar and 39 other members won a total of €23,500  between them in cash prizes.

• THE ladies from Tralee Failte Probus Club teamed up with the crew from StoryStock, a company based in the Kerry Technology Park, for a bit of fun recently.

Celine Slattery, Phil Daly, Mary O’Donnell and Marian Dillon faced the cameras to lip sync to Miley Cyrus’ hit ‘Wrecking Ball’ (below) and they made a damn fine job of it too.

• A FORMER Tralee Dynamos player, Shane Lowth signed for Cobh Ramblers. The League of Ireland Airtricity First Division side made the announcement on their website.

The Tralee man – son of Paul Lowth of The Huddle Bar and wife Linda – joined the Cork club from Limerick FC.

• THERE was damage caused to the Crib in the Square, for the second time in a month.

There was broken perspex, cut light cables and statues knocked over. Earlier that month there was damage caused to the lights under the Christmas tree.

• THE wind howled and the rain fell, but that didn’t deter the hundreds of dippers in Fenit and Banna on Christmas Day.

There was a huge crowd at the beach in Fenit, despite the bad weather and spirits were high as they sang ‘Jingle Bells’ just prior to the dash. And dash they did to the ocean, three times to keep up the tradition.

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in November…

• THERE was sad news in early November when the body of 70-year-old Jim Keane from Lixnaw was recovered from the River Feale during the search for .

Mr Keane, a local farmer, had been missing for a number of days. after his tractor was sighted on  in the River Brick near his farmland. It was thought that his tractor slid into the river.

• A PERIOD house in Barrow was sold at auction in Cork and it went for well above the minimum asking price.

Barrow House went to auction at The Imperial Hotel, Cork, with an AMV of €275,000. However the property which overlooks Tralee Bay eventually sold for €355,000 at the DNG auction.

• Kerry picked up just the one GAA/GPA All-Star as, Paul Geaney, got the nod for his first award.

The Dingle man and three other Kerry players – Killian Young and Paul Murphy and Shane Enright – were nominated for the All-Stars.

• DESCENDANTS of two families that dominated the history of Tralee – the Fitzgeralds and the Dennys – were present at a two-day conference at Siamsa Tíre.

Former Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dick Spring officially opened the Tralee 800 Conference and gave the keynote address.

Tom Denny of the Denny family and Anthony Fitzgerald, a descendant of the Munster Geraldines spoke at the conference in The Rose Hotel.

• A ST Brendan’s Park woman collected a national award for her work on Radio Kerry’s agricultural show, Agritime.

Aisling O’Brien, who presents the show, collected the Best Radio Programme or Story category award in the 2016 Agricultural Journalism Awards.

• THERE was good news for shoppers when it was revealed the annual free parking period for Christmas was returning. It was to take effect from 1pm daily from December 5 to January 7.

• A LOCAL business made a presentation to Tralee Municipal District councillors which could see the canal area become the focus of a major tourism centre.

An ‘Urban Beach’, kayaking, seafood trails, raft racing and much more were suggested as possibilities for development, by Michaela and John Edwards, who run a local adventure activity business, Wild Water Adventures.

• TRALEE’S Ultan Dillane made his first start for Ireland against Canada and he was awesome. So much so, that he was awarded Man Of The Match in the game which finished 52-21 to the home team.

Ultan managed to get a second-half try during the evening and was taken off in the 73rd minute in a superb performance.

• THE National Circus of Ireland Festival was another great success in town.

Organiser Con Horgan was delighted with the festival and the attendances at workshops.

“It was our most successful year ever. We had really high numbers at the events. The Falcon show on Saturday night in the Square was beautiful with acrobats and fire-breathing. The four-day convention was also well attended and we had a new space in the Tralee Gymnastics Hall which was incredible,” said Con.

• KERRY County Council commenced works on the provision of new traffic signals at the junction of Denny Street and The Mall in Tralee, as well as upgrading the signals at the junction of Ivy Terrace and Prince’s Quay near the Dominican church.

The works were scheduled to be completed by the end of November in advance of the busy Christmas shopping period.

• A LOCAL student and TraleeToday.ie columnist won an award at the prestigious .eu Web Awards for her website.

Founder of teentimes.eu, Zoe O’Connor, is a leaving certificate student in Brookfield College in Tralee, a well known blogger and YouTuber and also writes a weekly column for TraleeToday.ie.

Her website was awarded the Special Commendation Award on the night.

• A COMPANY based in the Spa  won an E-Commerce Award at the inaugural Realex Payments E-Commerce Awards held at the RDS in Dublin.

Purchase.ie based in the Spa, Tralee was one of 11 companies shortlisted as a finalist as best Micro E-Commerce Business in Ireland and won the award.

Purchase.ie who specialise largely in the sale of products aimed at helping customers reduce energy bills and other domestic charges was selected as winner of the award.

• IT was announced Austin Stack Park will host two Allianz National League football clashes involving Kerry next spring, including the glamour tie with the All-Ireland champs.

Tralee will also be the venue for a clash with the All-Ireland finalists Mayo in February. They will welcome Dublin on March 18 which is sure to make  for a busy St Patricks weekend in the county capital.

• THERE was a massive crowd in the Square for the traditional switching on of the Christmas lights.

After all the excitement of the CH parade, there was still a huge crowd around in the Square as Andrew Morrissey of Radio Kerry got the crowd in festive mood before Kieran Donaghy and his daughter Lola Rose were on hand to switch the lights on.

REVIEW 2016: The News From October

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in October…

• Tralee teams were dumped out at the quarter final stage of the county championship. Dr Crokes beat a battling Kerins O’Rahillys in Tralee by 1-16 to 0-14.

Meanwhile Austin Stacks couldn’t handle the challenge of Kenmare in Killarney, losing by 0-15 to 0-12.

• THERE were two lucky winners of Lotto prizes in Kerry. And there was more great luck for another winner of over €180,000 in the county.

A winning ticket worth €2,266,323 was sold in Hannah Mary’s Country Store XL in Killorglin.  There was one winner of the Lotto Match 5 and the Bonus prize of €181,751 and that winning Quick Pick selection was sold in Moloney’s Newsagents in Listowel.

• FIGURES from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation on October 4 revealed there were 21 people waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry.

These trolley watch numbers, which are not disputed by the HSE, are the highest ever recorded at UHK since the INMO started recording information ten years ago.

• RADIO Kerry won the local station of the year at the PPI awards – the radio ‘Oscars’.

The station was up for seven awards at the black tie ceremony at the Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny, but was unsuccessful with those nominations.

Radio Kerry won it last in 2014 and this makes it a fifth win in all for the station.

• MICHAEL Fassbender was  home in October to receive the greatest honour the town of Killarney can bestow on a native or visitor – the Order of Inisfallen.

He was joined by girlfriend, Alicia Vikander, at Muckross House for the ceremony, followed by a black-tie dinner at the Europe Hotel and Resort, not far from where he grew up in Fossa.

• THERE was terrible news that a man who falsely claimed he was from the ESB, robbed an elderly woman’s home in Connolly Park.

The man gained access by saying he needed to check the switches in the house. He distracted her and took a large sum of money which she had set aside for Christmas.

• AFTER an illustrious career, Kerry defender Marc Ó Sé  announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The 36-year-old won five All-Ireland titles,  played 176 times for Kerry teams and holds a record for championship appearances (88) with his brother Tomás.

• TRALEE Municipal District councillors approved plans for a two-storey McDonalds at a special meeting.

The  fast food giant’s plans to demolish the old building and construct a brand new restaurant to the east of the existing structure and double its size was approved.

• THERE was anger expressed by customers of the Tralee Omniplex back in October, after they were issued with tickets by Kerry County Council  for parking on the Dan Spring Road.

The cinema had a sign up telling patrons that the car park was full well before 9pm, so many parked outside on the side of the road. When they came out they found they’d have to pay €40 parking fines.

• Tralee Credit Union celebrated a very special milestone in October.

They reached a landmark €200 million in assets. This milestone in their development confirmed Tralee Credit Union’s position as one of the largest community based credit unions in the country.

• HUNDREDS of people packed themselves into the Ballygarry House Hotel for the launch of Kieran Donaghy’s autobiography What Do You Think Of That?

Along with Maurice Fitzgerald and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, who helped launch the account of the Stacks man’s life, were other legends of Gaelic Football scattered around the room on the night.

• There was no joy for the Na Gaeil footballers as they were beaten in the Junior Premier Championship Final.

The game went to a replay at the end of the month but Glenbeigh-Glencar’s blistering start put paid to the Oakpark club’s chances, eventually losing by 1-16 to 0-12.

1. Another Scam Warning…

Back in January, Gardaí were warning the public about a phone scam which can clear the credit on your phone or add large amounts to your monthly bill.

People around the county were reporting that they received calls from a foreign number starting with 00 247. A person can be heard shouting in distress in the background and they then hang up. You were very, very interested in that story. 40,426 page views   click here for story

• A LEGENDARY Tralee footballer’s medal collection was sold for €40,000 at auction.

Kerry and Austin Stacks footballer, Joe Barrett’s GAA medal collection went under the hammer at an auction in the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel with a guide price of between €30,000 and €40,000. It is not known who bought the collection.

• IT was reported in September that the building that houses Tesco and eight other businesses in the town centre had been sold to a Kerry businessman for in excess of €10m.

The Central Plaza building is the biggest retail property to be sold in the town centre in years.

The 43,000 square foot building is also home to well-known chain stores Pamela Scott, Vera Moda, Jack & Jones, Holland And Barrett, Michael Guiney’s, DV8, Mountain Warehouse and more.

• Kilkenny could not manage to win five All Irelands in a row, but the Kerry Minor hurlers did it when they defeated Meath in an exciting encounter at Semple Stadium Thurles to claim the B title.

• A TRALEE woman holed an incredible 50 foot putt to give Ireland a 3-2 win over Belgium and victory in the European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship in September.

Mary Sheehy from Oakpark was part of captain Pauline Walsh’s six-strong Irish team at Sierra Golf Club in Poland  and her amazing putt brought the title to Ireland for the second time.

• AUSTIN Stacks secured a Senior Club Championship title for the first time since 2003 after a pulsating encounter against Dr Crokes in Fitzgerald Stadium in September.

In the final 15 minutes, The Rock outscored their opponents by five points to two to secure a one point victory, 2-12 to 1-14.

• HOUSE Tralee and various other houses in the Kingdom and beyond the realm, descended on IT Tralee in September.

A replica of ‘The Iron Throne’ from the colossally popular HBO fantasy drama, ‘Game of Thrones’ was in situ at the ITT’s North Campus and over 1,000 Kings usurped and fought their way to the throne.

• KERRY minors completed a fantastic three in a row in Croke Park beating Galway 3-7 to 0-9 displaying again how the future is so bright for Kerry football.

A nervy first half by both sides – where Kerry only managed four scores – was followed by a tough second period where the Kingdom only drove on in the final 10 minutes past a courageous group of Tribesmen.

• Tralee Warriors lost their first Men’s Superleague game in Cork, as UCC Demons ran out 92-77 winners.

It was a great effort for their first game against the champions, especially as the team was only finding its feet after being together for such a short period. Better days would come for the Warriors.

• The Tralee Food Festival was another resounding success with hundreds of people attending the various events.

Crowds enjoyed some delicious fare in the artisan market in The Square while others travelled around to the various hotels, cafes and restaurants around town taking part in the taste trail.

• Kilmoyley beat Ballyduff by 1-18 to 2-13 to win the replay of the Kerry hurling Championship.

Their 24th title equalled the record of Ballyduff in an entertaining game played in mixed conditions at Austin Stack Park.

• TRALEE retained its Gold Medal status again in the national Tidy Towns Competition making it five in a row.

Listowel won Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town for the second consecutive year. Killarney, Kenmare, Sneem, and Listowel also received gold medals. Knightstown and Portmagee secured bronze.

REVIEW 2016: The News From August

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in August…

• IT was announced that a new restaurant would create up to 10 full-time and part-time jobs when it opens in town.

Le Rustique serves French cuisine and is located at a premises on Princes Street, where a number of restaurants have operated in the past.

The lease was taken on by a couple from the French/German border, who have recently moved to Killorglin.

• LIFE saving community first responders went live in Tralee in August.

The voluntary members are trained to deal with early intervention of chest pain, stroke, choking and cardiac arrest.

It is proposed that the Tralee Community Responders will cover a 5km radius. It extends as far north as Leith West, as south as Farmers Bridge, west out to Blennerville and heading east passed Chute Hall.

• We reported on an incident of extreme cruelty to two kittens witnessed on the main road between Ballyduff and Tralee.

Shocked motorist, Polly Hartney and her husband Tony were witness to two kittens thrown out of a car, as it travelled along a straight stretch of road near Ballincrossig going towards Tralee from Ballyduff.

• KERRY won back to back All-Ireland titles when the juniors beat Mayo in Croke Park. Stephen Wallace’s charges won by 2-18 to 2-11 to cap off another great year for the side.

• THE Kerry County Museum featured in a New York Times article where a travel writer retraces the footsteps of Roger Casement taking in visits to Banna and Tralee.

Rosie Schaap also found time to stop off for a pint in Bettys Bar on Strand Street, where she wrote it is “a wonderfully cozy spot with a fireplace, a shelf packed with books, weekly traditional music sessions and a dedicated crew of regulars”.

• KERRY’S newest rowing club Fenit were in the medals in three categories in the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Ballyshannon.

Fenit were rowing in a brand new boat, which was built in Tralee and it accommodated medal-winning teams in various categories.

In the pre-veteran mixed, Paula Moloney, Edel O’Sullivan, Pat O’Connor, Kevin Crowley and Colm Lynch Cox captured bronze medals. The pre-veteran ladies won silver and the intermediate ladies won gold. In these two categories Fenit had the same team of Paula Moloney, Edel O’Sullivan, Brid O’Driscoll, Tara O’Halloran and Cox, Deirdre Leahy.

• A KERRY and Austin Stacks legend received the honour of being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the GAA Museum in Croke Park.

John O’Keeffe was a member of the Kerry senior team from 1969 until 1984 and is regarded as one of the most stylish and accomplished full-backs in Gaelic football history. He joins other Kerry legends, Joe Keohane, Dan O’Keeffe, Sean Murphy, Mick O’Connell, Pat Spillane, Mikey Sheey and Mick O’Dwyer in the illustrious Hall of Fame.

• Chicago Rose, Maggie McEldowney (27) looked delighted and shocked when her name was announced as the new Rose of Tralee on August 23 by Daithi O Sé. She is the first Chicago Rose to win since 1987.

• GARDAI in Listowel appealed to the public  for information on a man who went missing.

Gardaí said 53-year-old William Mulvihill of Ozanam Villas in Ballybunion, was last seen in Tralee during the Rose of Tralee festival on Sunday evening, August 21.

• A GROUP of workers from TLI Group in Abbeydorney came in for praise, when they came to the aid of a stricken animal who was stuck in a mud-filled ditch.

They were out doing contract work for the ESB near Tarbert when they heard an animal in distress. They followed the cries until they came across a horse who was almost buried in a muddy ditch.

The workers set about rescuing the animal by managing to get a harness and rope around it and after a while they were able to haul it to safety.

• A TRALEE shop was named Best Family-Run Shop in Ireland in the prestigious Irish Times Best Shops in Ireland 2016 competition.

CH Chemists had been included in the shortlist in the Best Family-Run Shop category in the awards which seek to reward independent shop owners who are getting it right according to the customer.

• It was defeat to the Dubs again for Kerry as injury time points by Eoghan O’Gara and Diarmuid Connolly saw the blues win the All-Ireland senior football semi-final in front of a capacity crowd at Croke Park.

REVIEW 2016: The News From July

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in July…

• Drink-driving figures revealed at a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee on July 1, showed an increase in intoxicated while driving incidents from 134 in the first half of 2015 to 151 in the first six months of 2016.

It showed 51 of these cases were detected in people aged 21-30,  46 of whom were male. The Chief Supt said the figures were disappointing and debunks the myth that young people are being more responsible than the older generation when it comes to drink driving and that the message is not getting through to them. Only 17 out of the 151 detected were female.

• THE Kerry minors retained their Munster title in a sun-drenched Fitzgerald Stadium in early July beating Cork by 3-14 to 3-8 with David Clifford the star of the show, netting one and setting up goals for Bryan Sweeney and Sean O’Shea.

In the senior game, Kerry beat Tipperary to win another Munster title by 3-17 to 2-10.

• AN American satellite-based technology company announced it was creating more than 30 specialised  jobs over the course of five years in a new premises in Killarney, where it has moved to from its Tralee office.

In 2014, the US based company bought out Altobridge, which was based in Kerry Technology Park, Tralee and established an office at Liber House in Monavalley.

However, the company moved out of that Tralee office to set up their new home in Killarney.

• There was good news for the town when it was announced that 20 jobs were to be created with a new restaurant  in Tralee town centre.

Lana Asian Street Food had plans to open at a premises in Ashe Street which was previously The Dragon Inn and later the Royal Palace Chinese restaurants.

• A FORMER Park FC player signed a professional contract with an English Championship side.

Shane McLoughlin joined five other young players in signing one year deals at Ipswich town at the weekend. The contract also has an option of a further 12 month stay at Portman Road.

• THE achievements of a young man from Tralee were recognised by Kerry County Council  with a civic reception to recognise his sporting achievements.

Jockey Bryan Cooper was joined by his family at Council Chambers where he was feted for his achievement of winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Don Cossack earlier this year.

• IT was a good month for students in the Kerry ETB/Radio Kerry training course.

Dan Kearney from Castleisland received a City and Guilds Global Gold Medal of Excellence in London against global competition for his outstanding work during his training course in radio production techniques at Kerry ETB Training Centre.

He also received the Further Education Learner of the Year Award. This is reserved for learners in the UK and Ireland and he was the overall winner.

Another student of the course also won a major international award.

Tralee woman Gráinne McPolin, a student of radio broadcasting at the Kerry ETB Training Centre won the 2016 Clarion International Radio Award for a documentary about her experience of working in Saudi Arabia – ‘Saudi Dreams of a Camper Van.’

• Comedian Brendan Grace arrived by horse and trap to Blennerville to unveil a plaque dedicated to the memory of Tralee character, Nedeen Kelliher.

Nedeen, ‘Tralee’s last jarvey’ was a great friend of Brendan Grace and was wonderful fodder for the funnyman’s standup routines.

• PLANS for two way traffic to return on Denny Street received the go ahead along with a number of other changes to Tralee town centre at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District on Tuesday.

There had been considerable opposition over the loss of 66 car spaces on Denny Street and the effect it will have on business in the town centre. After a consultation period with traders and taxi drivers, a number of amendments were made to the original plans.

• A TRALEE lady  won the Best Dressed Lady at the Dublin Horse Show.

Claire Murphy was wearing a Carol Kennelly (Tralee) Millinery headpiece and a Tina Griffin (Killorglin) designed dress making her dressed head to toe in Kerry designs.

Claire won a €10,000 Dundrum Town Centre voucher that can be redeemed anywhere in the centre for her troubles.

• HUNDREDS of people made their way to Banna Beach in late July for a fantastic celebration of culture and dance at Féile Fáilte.

The day-long event had everything from a ceili to a disco with local and global styles mixing on stage making for a hugely enjoyable experience for performers and the audience.

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in June…

•  A BALLYROE man has raised €10,870 for Enable Ireland after completing a cycling tour of Provence in the South of France.

Tommy Sheehy, who is originally from Castleisland, climbed Mount Ventoux in aid of Enable Ireland. The challenge covered Lyon to Nice over the rugged French countryside.

• COURTENAY Cox and Bear Grylls were  in the Kingdom filming in June.

The show was called ‘Running Wild’ and Grylls and Cox stayed in the Europe Hotel and Resort while filming in south and west Kerry .

• THERE were poignant scenes at Ballymullen in early June at the unveiling of two new plaques, which honour Tralee’s World War I dead, at the monument to the Munster Fusiliers.

The plaques – one with the 101 names of members of the Munster Fusiliers and the other inscribed with 125 names of soldiers from other regiments – were unveiled by Mayor of Kerry Pat McCarthy and Cllr Sam Locke who had a relative who fought with the Munster Fusiliers during the war and was the driving force behind getting the plaques.

• AROUND 200 people gathered outside the Castle Bar and along Rock Street for the annual One Furlong Dash on Rock Street.

Dominic O’Brien won the charity event, where representatives from Rock Street watering holes, raced from Galvin’s Shop to the Castle Bar for the honour of winning the One Furlong Dash perpetual trophy.

• A  lifestyle website, Lovin.ie, declared the Brogue Inn the best place in Kerry to get breakfast.

“Greased to perfection, this fry is one of the finest around,” is how they described the feed you get at Kirby’s Brogue Inn. “Complete with warm buttered brown bread and the cup o’ tae – perf.  Perch yourself for the afternoon in this typical Irish eatin’ house,” read the description in the story posted on the popular website.

• TRALEE Musical Society won two awards at the Association of Irish Musical Society Awards (AIMS).

They received five nominations in all for their production of ‘The Beautiful Game’ which wowed audiences in Siamsa Tire back in March.

Des Hurley won for Best Stage Management and Gary Murphy was a winner in the Best Actor category.

•TRALEE Municipal District councillors received a combined total of over €250,000 in payments in 2015 according to figures from Kerry County Council revealed in June.In figures supplied by the Council to Radio Kerry, it showed Cllr Pat McCarthy received the largest amount of €43,404.13, while Independent Cllr Sam Locke received the smallest amount of €21,888.14.

• AN American bought drinks to the value of €2,500 on a night out in The Blasket in late June.

A few Americans, who were golfing in Kerry, came into the bar at about 10pm and one of them ordered a drink for the bar. While it was very quiet around this time, this was nothing too out of the ordinary.

However, as people started to come in, the same guy bought them drinks to and eventually told the barman to run a tab. The Blasket gets busy on Tuesdays and by the end of the night he and the rest of the bar had run up a €2,500 bar bill.

• A BALLYSEEDY girl stuck to her guns and made a huge gesture by not only donating a substantial amount of her hair to the Rapunzel Foundation but also aiding the  Chernobyl Children’s International Project.

Nine-year-old Roisin Sugrue, wrote a letter to pledging that she would donate hair to the Foundation and raise funds for the Chernobyl charity after her First Communion which she made in May and fulfilled her promise in late June.

• A NEW Mayor of Tralee was elected in late June.Cllr Terry O’Brien (Lab) took over from Cllr Tom McEllistrim at the Tralee Municipal District AGM.

His nomination was put forward by fellow Labour Party member, Cllr Graham Spring, and seconded by Cllr Jim Finucane.

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in May…

• LARGE crowds turned out for the official opening of the Tralee Rowing Club Boathouse in early May.

The boathouse is dedicated to the memory of the club’s good friend John O’Shea, where they unveiled a plaque in his honour.

Minister Jimmy Deenihan officially opened the facility in front of representatives from Rowing Ireland, members of Kerry County Council, Mayor of Tralee Municipal district Tom McEllistrim, Michael Healy Rae T.D., Martin Ferris T.D., Councillor Sam Locke and former and present members and friends of Tralee Rowing Club.

• MERCY Mounthawk celebrated a fantastic two successes in the 2016 Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards on Thursday in early May.

In what was an amazing achievement for the students, the school took home the top prize in the Best Set category for its set design in the school’s production ‘Les Misérables’ and then the big one – Best Overall School Play for the school’s production of ‘The Plough and the Stars’.

•  THE first Darkness Into Light Tralee event, held in the early hours of Saturday May 7, was an emotional celebration of all that is good about the people in our community.

They turned up in their thousands at CBS The Green for the fundraiser in aid of Pieta House and to highlight the vital message that there is help and support out there for people suffering from mental health issues.

• THE Council announced it hoped to move towards introducing another activity at Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre and is looked at developing the windmill, the steam train rail line and the Wetlands as a “Lee Valley attraction”.

Director of Economic Development and Community Services, Michael Scannell, said the he saw “the Wetlands, the steam train and the windmill as a single attraction and should be marketed as a Lee Valley attraction.”

• A MAN who helped raise €11 Million over 27 years for a cancer charity in Kerry was honoured with a civic reception.

Ted Moynihan of the Kerry Hospice Foundation was given the civic reception by the Tralee Municipal District at Kerry County Council buildings in Rathass.

• THE new extension in Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School was officially opened on Monday.

The ‘Centenary Building’ contains seven classrooms, a number of special needs rooms and these rooms wrap around a large hall which contains a stage for school performances.

The €1.6 million development was officially opened by Jimmy Deenihan who, while Minister for Arts and The Gaeltacht, turned the sod of the development back in December 2014.

• THERE was tragic news in mid May when a motorcyclist died in a road accident near Ballyheigue.

Aidan Kennelly, of Heirhill, Ballyheigue who was in his early 30s, died in the single vehicle crash.

• IT was reported that new lighting would be installed on the canal walkway, but it will be turned off every night at 11pm thanks to otters in the area.

Work was underway along the canal walkway where motion-activated lights were being installed, a resurfacing of the walkway, a shared cycleway/walkway and landscaping.

However, these lights will switch off at 11pm and be activated once again at dusk the following day in consideration for otters and other wildlife in the area.

• THE new Kerry Rose was revealed as Danielle O’Sullivan from Killarney.

Danielle was shocked when host Daithi O Se called out her name on stage at the Kerry Rose selection 2016 at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in late May.

• A GROUP of Presentation Secondary School students came second in a national competition and won €3,000 for their school.

The girls took part in the AIB Build a Bank Challenge which offers transition and 5th year students a chance to run their own School Bank.

• THE Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, said the State had identified a location for a new Courthouse in Tralee back in May.

The site, which is in State ownership, will not be at the court’s current location on Ashe Street and the Courts Service was assessing the site to establish whether it’s suitable for a courthouse.

• THERE was great sadness after the death of a man in a road accident at Ballyroe.

Michael ‘Mikey’ Martin was killed when he was struck by a car while walking on the road near the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on May 31.

REVIEW 2016: The News From April

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in April…

• ACTOR Dominic West was in Ballybunion in April for a special 1916 commemoration event.

The star of The Wire and The Affair was there to read the 1916 Proclamation at the event in Scoil Iosagain which honoured three north Kerry men the O’Rahilly, Michael Mulvihill and Paddy Shortis – who died during the Rising.

• KERRY had a good day in Austin Stack Park as they beat old foes Cork in their National League encounter by 0-20 to 1-12.

Cork were relegated and Kerry headed for the semis in Croke Park where they beat Roscommon to set up a final with champions Dublin.

• A TRALEE man was instrumental in breaking the international ‘Panama Papers’ story, of how the world’s rich and powerful allegedly were involved in complex financial arrangements to hide their assets from taxes.

Gerard Ryle is at the helm of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which headed up the research and reported on offshore account holders. The documents from a Panamanian law firm were leaked to the (ICIJ) and more than 100 other news organisations.

The story made headlines all over the world and the names mentioned in the documents included Russian Premier Vladimir Putin.

• THE new look Rose Hotel in Tralee was unveiled to much fanfare in April.

After months of work, owners Dick and Eibhlin Henggeler cut the tape on a new era in the hotel.

Around 200 invited guests got to see the results 0n April 9 of the refurbishments and all agreed the place looked absolutely stunning.

• KEEPING up a long tradition, a Kerryman made it on to our screens for the US Masters.

The man was from Carrigeen, just outside Killarney. Golf-mad Alan MacSweeney got a ticket from a friend of his whom he met while working in America on the J1 Visa last year.

• THE Top Gear team were in Kerry and supported a local cause while here. Matt Le Blanc and Chris Evans were in Killarney and Dingle during a weekend in April to film for the TV show.

The duo waxed lyrical about the area and supported the ‘Darkness Into Light’ campaign.

• A MUCH loved Tralee publican celebrated 60 years behind the bar in April with a get together of family and friends.

In 1956, Eugene ‘Eugie’ Creagh took over The Ballymac Bar in Boherbee and has been in business on the street ever since.

Surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, Eugie celebrated his diamond jubilee of pulling pints and serving punters.

• IT was a memorable day in Banna on April 21 for the State commemoration to mark the role of Roger Casement, Robert Monteith and Daniel Bailey in the Easter Rising.

President Michael D Higgins gave the keynote address at the ceremony attended by thousands looking on from seating and up in the sand dunes. It was the only State commemoration for the 1916 Rising held outside Dublin attended by the President.

• Kerry suffered a heavy defeat to Dublin in the National League final on April 24. They lost by 2-18 to 0-13 at Croke Park in front of over 80,000 fans.

• IT was confirmed that Tommy Walsh had left the Kerry senior football panel in late April.

The 28-year-old had, according to reports, grown frustrated at the lack of game time he has seen since returning to the Kerry panel after five years in Australia.

REVIEW 2016: The News From March

Continuing our Review of 2016, here’s some of the stories we brought you in March…

• THERE was sadness in town at the start of the month at the news of the death of Margaret Dwyer, one of the first members of the Rose of Tralee International Festival in 1959, at the age of 97.

Ms Dwyer came to Kerry soon after World War 2, a conflict in which her husband Johnny Dwyer lost his life. She was a vital contributor to the festival and community groups over the past decades and everyone who knew this independent, strong-willed, wonderful person was saddened by her passing.

•  PLANNING permission was granted for the €20m advanced manufacturing facility at Kerry Technology Park, Dromtacker.

The planned facility was announced in February last year by the IDA as part of a €200m programme for rural towns around the country.

• THE then Mayor of Tralee’s motion, calling for Tralee town to be designated and given city status, received support from councillors at the  March meeting of Tralee Municipal District.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Tom McEllistrim said Kilkenny is called a city and it has a similar population to Tralee.

“Based on these grounds, there’s no reason why Tralee shouldn’t become a city as well. There would have to be legislation introduced to get it done,” he said.

•  Ballymac-based greyhound trainer, Liam Dowling got a civic reception at Kerry County Council buildings in March.

Mayor of Tralee Municipal District, Tom McEllistrim, asked for the trainer to be honoured for his services to greyhound racing in Kerry with Liam’s dog, Ballymac Matt, winning the Irish Derby back in September 2015, on the same weekend as Kerry faced Dublin in the All-Ireland.

• A YEAR-LONG celebration of Tralee’s 800th anniversary was officially launched in March including extended festivals and a big screen in the Square for Ireland’s opening Euro 2016 game against Belgium.

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council and Chairman of the Tralee 800 Group, Cllr Pat McCarthy officially launched details of how the town plans to mark this significant historic milestone.

• AROUND 270 people attended a special event in Ballygarry House Hotel to hear Holocaust survivor, Eva Schloss, speak about her experiences.

The acclaimed author and the stepsister of Anne Frank, was present as part of the International Women’s Day Kerry event put on by the Kerry Businesswomen’s Network and the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee.

• IT was reported that residents in a part of Banna were facing evacuation within years if nothing is done to counteract the effects of coastal erosion in the area.

Due to a number of factors the sand dunes, which act as a barrier between the coast and residents at Carrahane, are being decimated.

•  IT was a long and rewarding day for hundreds of runners on March 13 as they completed their full and half marathons in town.

There was about 300 for the full and between 450 and 500 for the half marathon.

• A TRALEE dog owner and his pet brought home an award from the world renowned  competition, Crufts, held in Birmingham.

First time Crufts competitor Tim Galvin and his rottweiler Rocky, finished second place in the junior dog category in his breed.

Second place meant the 18 month old pup finished just two steps away from the highly prestigious ‘Best in Show’ final event.

• BRYAN Cooper was the toast of Tralee man after he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Don Cossack.

It was the young jockey’s first Gold Cup win and joy was etched on his face as they past the finishing post to win for trainer Gordon Elliott and owner Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary.

• After 195 entries, 28 races, €19,500 in prize money, the winner of The Castle Bar rollover was announced with The ‘Speed And Degrees’ duo of Tom Clifford and Danny Diggins winning  €6,000.

They were languishing behind in the field with one race to go, but that was about to change dramatically. Outsider, Solar Impulse, came home at 28/1 in the last race of the festival to catapult the boys into the top spot to win by two points and secure the €6,000 top prize.

• PHONEWATCH opened its first office in Tralee, and created up to 12 new jobs initially, with additional jobs being created as the company grew its business in Kerry.

The offices at Denny Street were officially opened by Kerry GAA Star Marc Ó Sé today.

• IT was announced there were plans to sell the IT Tralee South Campus in Clash and move students up to their north base in Dromtacker.

In a presentation to Kerry County Council, President of the ITT, Dr Oliver Murphy revealed that the integration of all facilities was their objective and that the plan is to sell the south campus to generate income to fund the move.

It is hoped to get this plan realised in the next four to five years. Around 1,000 students out of the student body of 3,000, now use the Clash premises but they can be facilitated in the north campus in the future.

• THE Miss Kerry 2016 competition took place in Killarney  and it was a Listowel woman who took home the crown.

Over 200 people saw Niamh Enright, sponsored by Trant’s Pharmacy Listowel, chosen by judges Aideen Feely, Pawel Nowak and Miss Kerry 2016, Mairead Breathnach, from 20 contestants  at The Brehon  Hotel.

•  A UK clothing chain opened a new store on Abbeycourt.

A number of new jobs were created at Mountain Warehouse – the UK-based discount outdoor clothing seller which has branches in Dublin, Wexford, Banbridge and Antrim – when it opened next to Holland & Barrett.

• CLASSES were disrupted at IT Tralee in early February because of a nationwide strike by lecturers and researchers in opposition to government cuts.

The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) felt they had been forced to strike because of austerity measures imposed by the Department of Education over the last number of years.

• THE Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) awarded Coláiste Gleann Lí, Tralee, the ‘Shield’ Anti-Bullying Flag in recognition for their work in strengthening their preventative and proactive approach to bullying.

Several schools in Kerry have decided take action to positively engage with the ISPCCs Shield Campain, but Coláiste Gleann Lí was the first in the county to take extra steps to reach the six necessary criteria to attain this award.

• HUNDREDS turned out in the Brandon Hotel in February, for the unveiling of two restored anchors from the Aud, the ship forever linked with the events in Banna in 1916.

The unveiling of the anchors this year, marked the centenary of Roger Casement’s ultimately doomed plan to support the cause of Irish freedom by bringing an estimated 20,000 rifles, 1,000,000 rounds of ammunition, 10 machine guns, and explosives in the ship, the SMS Libau, which masqueraded as the Aud, a Norwegian vessel.

• As General Election loomed, there was a surprise when Danny Healy Rae declared himself as a candidate.

In a move which shocked the political world, the brother of Michael Healy Rae, was bidding to get two seats for the Healy Rae clan.

The independent councillor in the South Kerry Municipal District lodged his election papers just before the noon deadline of February 11 at the Courts Services offices in the Centrepoint building in Tralee.

• IT seems someone in town felt Donald Trump should be kept in mind for a No.1 ahead of general election day.

This photo was not taken in some square-shaped ‘fly over state’ in the US, but on the Dingle road just past the roundabout to the Aqua Dome back in mid-February showing someone was backing a winning horse back then.

Katie Underwood 16• IT was a full house in the Brandon Hotel Conference Centre for the Lee Strand Protein+ Milk Katie Taylor v Queen Underwood bout.

The Olympic champion recorded her 61st consecutive win in the ring by beating the American on points and there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the evening generated by the 800 people present.

Rose Elysha 1• THE Rose of Tralee International Festival won an Accenture Digital Media Award – the Oscars of digital media in Ireland.

The ‘Access All Areas’ coverage of the 2015 Festival came out on top in the Best Use of Social Media Category ahead of major brands such as HB Ice Cream, Uncle Ben’s Ireland, Life Style Sports and Avonmore.

KUH unveiling 6• MINISTER for Health, Leo Varadkar was in Tralee in February to formally rename Kerry General Hospital as University Hospital Kerry.

The Minister also officially opened a number of recent service improvements including a new CT scanner, Diabetes Services and the hospital’s UCC Education Centre.

The formal renaming of Kerry General Hospital to University Hospital Kerry  links it formally to eight other acute hospitals in counties Kerry, Cork, Waterford, and South Tipperary, with Kilkreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital in Kilkenny, and with UCC as the primary academic partner.

•  A TRALEE woman  won €19,646.55 after putting down a mere €7 on a five-bet accumulator back in February.

The happy punter stayed true to her roots and had a local theme going through her bet selections, with one of the seven winners trained by a woman named Kerry and another by a woman called Rose.

• The five Kerry TDs for the next Dail were elected in late February with the big story being the dominance of the two Healy-Rae brothers.

They were joined by Martin Ferris, John Brassil and Brendan Griffin who were elected on the 11th count with sitting Fine Gael TD Jimmy Deenihan losing out.

There were scenes of wild celebration as presiding officer Padraig Burke deemed them elected.

• Tralee man Ultan Dillane came on to play against England in the Six Nations match. He made a big impact too, but Ireland came up short against the Old Enemy.

Jack Stuart and Rory Doyle spent $65 on a ticket to the Sydney Opera House area on New Year’s Eve but they ended up inside the Opera House itself, at a thousand-dollar  party. They availed of free food and drink and a top class view of the fireworks show. Click here…

Ultan Dillane 1• IT was the beginning of a special year for Ultan Dillane when the former Tralee RFC player was called into Joe Schmidt’s extended Irish training squad for a Six Nations camp at Carton House.

• It emerged that flood damage in late 2015 would cost Kerry County Council €3.5 million.

The effects of the deluge of rain that fell leading up to and during the Christmas period caused damage the length and breath of the county.

At the beginning of December, Storm Desmond, brought with it rainfall that flooded parts of Tralee leaving homeowners, businesses and Kerry County Council counting the cost.

• FIVE time All-Ireland winner, Bryan Sheehan, was nominated as the Kerry captain for 2016.

The county champions, South Kerry, nominated the St Mary’s man. Sheehan previously captained Kerry in 2010.

• A NAME change was proposed for the area around the Christie Hennessy statue.

At the meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council, a motion ws put forward that the area near the statue at Central Plaza/Abbeycourt be renamed ‘Christie Hennessy Place’.

The motion was put forward by Cllr Sam Locke to “enhance the area” he said.

Mike Burns, originally from Sneem, but now living with his family in Kevin Barry Villas, donated his kidney to his son, 19 year old son Darren, who was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney disease when he was just nine years old.

Bowie• THE death of David Bowie cast a veil of sadness all over the world for music fans in January.

One man in Ballybunion paid a special tribute to him at the Ladies beach to carve out his own tribute  in the sand.

Mario Perez made a circle with the famous lightning bolt Ziggy Stardust emblem from Bowie’s early 70s pomp.

Joe Flynn Funeral 3• TRALEE said goodbye to a truly inspirational man in mid-January.

Joe Flynn from Rahoonane lost his battle with cancer after going public in November 2015 about his illness.

His courage was an inspiration to many as he appeared on RTE radio to tell his story in late 2015. The funeral service at Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church was emotional, sad, interspersed with humour and a fitting send-off for a great guy.

Blennerville demolish 3• IT was a sad day for many in Blennerville on January 15 as the bulldozers moved into St Brendan’s Blennerville old school.

They started work demolishing the 84 year old building before 9am and six hours later the school was levelled.

Many past pupils looked on as they collected their children from the new school and no doubt remembered the good times they had in the building.

• JOHN MITCHELS ended 13 years outside of Division 1 by overcoming Spa in a thrilling finale in a play-off replay in Brosna.

It looked as though they were heading to extra-time for the second week in a row, only for Alan O’Donoghue to nail the winning point with almost the last kick of the game to send them up.
