THE Tralee Harriers Rose of Tralee 10km took place on Sunday with 514 runners taking to the road.

This festival favourite was hosted by the club as a fundraiser for the development of their training grounds.  The race started at The Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre where Chris Shortt provided music and Mc-ing for the start of this festival inspired run.

The sun came out and shone on the runners and the hundreds of spectators cheering on their family and friends.

As the buzz and anticipation grew, all were called to the start line and at 11am Kirsten Mate Maher, last year’s Rose of Tralee, pulled the trigger of the gun and off they went.

Kingdom Party Pals were on hand to run with the participants and playing music at various spots, Festival Drummers were playing on the Aquadome Roundabout and Denny Street and Boombastic brought them home with live performance on the festival stage at the end of Denny Street.

The runners were handed out medals, water and refreshments by the young athletes of Tralee Harriers AC Club at the finish line, while Chris Shortt perched himself at the gantry and MC’d as the athletes came through the line.

Martin Fitzgerald the Club chair and Race Director was extremely happy with the event. “We strive to show Tralee at its best and bring a fun element to our 10k. We were blessed with the weather and crowds and it was great for the young kids in the club seeing all these amazing athletes running fantastic times. I want to thank all of the volunteers who came out to help, and again this year they have gone beyond what is expected of them. Above all I thank the Committee in the club who put this event together, Months of planning and organising and they have done the Club and Tralee proud with their efforts”.

Organised as a fundraiser for the Tralee Harriers Athletic Club the race takes place on Sunday, August 25th. Entries are still open and selling very quickly.

The event was launched by Martin Fitzgerald Chair of the Harriers and Race Director for the event. He was joined by some of the club athletes along with some of the businesses who are continually supporting the club in all its endeavours.

They were also joined by Tralee Harriers own little Rose Bud Sophie Constable who is supporting the South Australian Simone Hendrick Buchanan.

The proceeds raised from the race will go towards the continued development of the club’s training facilities at Dan Spring Rd.

So far the club has invested almost €600,000 through grants and loans since they took over the field, in drainage, new field and by end of September there will be 300m of running track and a full long jump area. The facility is available to all groups for training.

The Tralee Harriers Rose of Tralee 10km starts at 11am from the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre and follows the River Lee Walkway, the Tralee Canal, and back into town following Strand Rd, Rock St, Maine Street, Ashe St. and finishing in Denny St. to arousing support of the family members and locals with live entertainment, and a party atmosphere.

Details and link to entries for the event can be found on Tralee Marathon website and Tralee Harriers Annual runs Facebook page.

Tralee Harriers Chair Martin Fitzgerald said; “This is one of the biggest fundraisers that the club has and it continues to be a very popular race bringing in runners from all over, especially those connected with the festival”.

Martin thanked the sponsors and the festival for their continued support of the club, “we are in continuing development phases and the changes to the training grounds will provide a popular facility for all runners to be able to use, with track lanes for running and walking.

Martin continued; “We are very proud to have two of our top athletes here today. Travane Morrison recent gold medal winner of the Irish National Senior 100m and Cillian Griffin who won two medals for Ireland at the recent U18 Youth Nationals International, both of these athletes along with the entire club have benefitted from the laying track lanes and we expect more athletes at elite level with another 200m being laid in the coming weeks.”

The prize have been extended this year, with the usual top three Male and Female finishers, there will be the over age categories, and are also introducing First returning Rose, First Past Escort, and First Family member of 2019Rose contestant. There will be several other prizes on the day for the over’s categories and selected paraathletes. Each runner that registers will receive a commemorative T-shirt and Medal.

Paul Griffin Tralee Harriers PRO, said: “It is great event for the town the festival and for runners. The race regularly attracts up to 500 competitors, who get to see Tralee and can experience the town and the festival at its best after their morning run. We are really looking forward to the day and hope that everyone will once again enjoy taking part. We had a very successful event last year and are keeping it the same this year with bands, music along the course. We have several returning roses and escorts who will be battling it out for a commissioned glass trophy. Our refreshment stand will be well stocked and the local business have come out to in great numbers and helped us, we would be at a loss without the continued support of Tralee town”

THE rain of the previous night had cleared away, so runners enjoyed dry weather for the annual Rose of Tralee 10k Race on Sunday morning.

Over 400 participants took off from the Tralee Bay Wetlands at 11am in humid conditions on the route, which finished at Denny Street where there was a great welcome from a brass band and hundreds of people cheering them on.

It was remarked upon by many participants that this was one of the best organised races in years, thanks to the efforts of Tralee Harriers.

The winner of the race was Conor O’Mahony in 33:54, followed by Donal White and Brian Murphy. The first woman home was Sharon Cahill in 40:50 with Marie McKenna in second and Catherine Kiely third.

We were at the finish line to capture the emotions of the runners, some of whom were completing their first 10k race. Scroll down for photos…

Down Rose Criticises ‘Cheap Reality TV Show’ Treatment During Rose Festival

A ROSE of Tralee contestant has publicly criticised the treatment she received on the Sunday morning of the festival, when they were filmed being told whether they made it to the final 32.

Down Rose, Fainche McCormack – who did not make it through to the finals – said she didn’t sign up to be treated like “animals in the circus” as part of the process of whittling down the 65 Roses to 32 on Sunday morning in front of TV cameras.

The conclusion of the RTE TV show ‘The Road To The Dome’, featured an ‘X Factor’ type of selection where one group of Roses were told they made it, while the other group were told they were not going through.

It made for emotional scenes and interviews in the immediate aftermath, which the Down Rose did not appreciate.

“The Rose of Tralee was honestly the most amazing experience of my life, until Sunday morning…” Fainche McCormack posted on Facebook. “I, and my fellow rose sisters, did not sign up for a cheap reality television show in which our emotions would be manipulated for entertainment purposes,” she continued.

“It’s just a shame that television viewing numbers became more important that the truly amazing girls that got hurt and that now have to deal with the emotional trauma of the whole, quite frankly disgusting and cruel, ordeal. None of us signed up for a cheap reality television show and now unfortunately the Rose of Tralee is an experience I will never forget, for all the wrong reasons,” she said, also claiming they were asked inappropriate questions and intrusively followed with cameras all week.

Chief Executive of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, said it’s a natural thing that people will become disappointed when they don’t progress.

He said the manner in which ‘The Road To The Dome’ finished was insensitive, they didn’t anticipate it and would not like to see it repeated. He said there was an apology given to the Roses which they accepted.

THE Rose of Tralee 10k Run was another super success on Sunday with over 600 runners taking to the road for the event.

The weather was very humid for the run and participants who wore more than one layer of clothing were soon regretting it, after they set off at 12 noon from The Rose Hotel.

A familiar face on the run was Ray Darcy, who enjoyed his experience back in Tralee (Ray is a former host of the Rose of Tralee).

The first three home in the Men’s Race were Sean O’Sullivan (34:23), Tommy O’Brien (34:49) and Stephen Young (35:03).

In the women’s race,  Deirdre Nagle (39:01) was first followed by Sharon Cahill (41:22) and  Siobhan Daly (41:33).

Most of the participants were back after about an hour and happily posed for photos at the finish line. Scroll down for photos…
