AROUND 360 pupils were joined by their teachers from Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí and a few special guests for a 5k fun run to bring the school’s Seachtain na Gaeilge events to a close.
Well known Kerry comedian Bernard Casey and fitness guru Aidan O’Mahony were on hand to lend their support and they were blessed with the weather for the event. St. Patricks Day arrived a week early in the town park as many students and staff decked themselves in green.
Students, staff and the wider school community celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge with a whole range of events all week to celebrate our Irish language and culture.
They worked tirelessly to organise a table quiz, zumba as gaeilge, a coffee morning, conversation circles, cake sale, workshops/special guest speakers and a talent show. Scroll down for photos…

“This is the second year that the best Irish window competition has been run during Seachtain na Gaeilge in Kerry and we are delighted with the result,” said Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa, Conradh na Gaeilge.
“Shops and businesses in Listowel and South & West Kerry were particularly active and we’re delighted that Tralee businesses took part this year.”
Conradh na Gaeilge are very grateful for the support of Kerry County Council’s Community Support Fund and Oifig na Gaeilge. The prizes will be presented at 7.30pm in Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee, Wednesday, April 5.
PROCLAMATION Day took place around Tralee and all over the country on Tuesday and two of the schools we visited were, Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn And Caherleaheen.
On the day, every school in the country was invited to share their Proclamations for a New Generation, and all other creative projects relating to 1916 that the student body had developed.
Both schools remembered the events of 1916 with an assembly where pupils produced work they had created especially for the occasion.
In Caherleaheen, they incorporated a céilí as part of the school’s Seachtain Na Gaeilge celebrations which continues this week. The event has proved a resounding success, teaching young people about history and generating hope for the future. (we’ll have more coverage of the event from other schools later)
SCHOOLS from all over Kerry took part in the Corfhéile na mBunscoilleanna 2016 in the Ballygarry House Hotel for this year’s Seachtain Na Gaeilge.
Eight national schools performed, including four from the Tralee area – Blennerville National School, Presentation Primary School, Derryquay National School and Spa National School.
It was all part of Seachtain Na Gaeilge which is a national initiative that aims to promote the Irish language from March 1 all the way to Saint Patrick’s Day.
At the event, children performed traditional Irish songs along with a reworking of a modern hit as gaeilge.
KERRY County Council has unveiled a packed programme of events and initiatives for Seachtain na Gaeilge which runs from March 1 to March 17.
The local authority is promoting the use of Irish throughout the period and has announced a number of displays, competitions and community-based events, all of which is being promoted through the dedicated Irish website for Kerry www.eolaire.ie
During Seachtain na Gaeilge, Kerry County Council will be promoting the use of Irish at all of the public counters in its offices around the county and signs have been affixed to a number of council vehicles bearing the message ‘Labhair Gaeilge Linn – Seachtain na Gaeilge.’
A 20-minute bilingual flashmob presentation based on the cultural revolution leading up to 1916 has been composed and is ready-made for performance by schools, local drama societies and community groups. ‘Tobshlua 1916’ is based on orations, songs, and poetry and from the period.
Kerry County Council is also inviting participation in a window display competition, ‘An Fhuinneog is Gaelaí’ which carries a prize fund of €1,000 and is being run in conjunction with Conradh na Gaeilge, Fóram Gaeilge Chiarraí and the business community in each of the four municipal districts.
Window displays on an Irish language theme should be photographed and submitted to the website via eolaire@ciarrai.ie
Kerry County Council Chief Executive, Moira Murrell said it is fitting to celebrate the Gaelic Revival that took place in the period leading up to 1916 and so Kerry County Council plans to raise the profile of Irish among the public in Kerry by encouraging everyone to participate in Seachtain na Gaeilge.
“As part of our publicity drive, the public will see ‘Labhair Gaeilge Linn!’ signage on many council vehicles around Kerry and at the public counters at our offices, as well as our libraries. We are urging everyone in the county to get involved and to try a cúpla focail,” said Ms. Murrell.

AS part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn invited other schools in the Tralee area to take part in a table quiz followed by a céili as part of their Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations.
The table quiz questions were asked as Gaeilge, though that hasn’t bothered the other schools in the past as they have come to Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn and won.
This year though, the Gaelscoil team of Tomas O hAinniféin, Daithí O’Regan and Peadar and Joseph Claro were the victorious.
“It’s a yearly event which we enjoy and celebrate,” said Liam Ó Conchubhair, teacher in Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn.
“The other schools find it as an enjoyable challenge to and try and figure out can they do the quiz. It’s great for other schools to come to us and see Irish used as everyday working language. It takes them a while to get into it, but before the day is out they get to use the words that maybe don’t come naturally in the day to day running of their own schools,” said Liam.
“The day also helps other schools it helps them celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge and they look forward to it each year,” said Liam.
FOUR students from a local school here in town have won a place in a national table quiz competition that will be taking place on Tuesday, March 10 in Dublin.
Gaelcholáiste Ciarraí students Tadhg Mac Suibhne, Donagh Mac Uileagóid, Vince Ó Cathasaigh agus Michéal Ó Duinn recently won the ‘Munster Tráth na gCeist Boird Feachtas’.
As winners, the students will now go on to compete in the All-Ireland competitions of the Tráth na gCeist Boird Feachtas next week.
In total, 21 schools will compete in this competition, part of the national celebration of Seachtain Na Gaeilge.
The quiz is part of a series of events that the school is participating in as part of Seachtain Na Gaeilge. Events being held in the school include a bingo, a mobile cinema, a Céilí and a Sean Nós Workshop.
