A report from Tralee Imperials on their clash with KCYMS in the U20 National Cup quarter-final game at Cumann Iosaef Sports Hall on Saturday afternoon…

Tralee Imperials 83

KCYMS 89

It was a local derby in the quarterfinal of the National Cup.

On Saturday we took on local rivals KCYMS in the National Cup 1/4 final in Tralee. The visitors started quickly and we struggled to contain their transition offense.

Aivaras Uosis, at just 16 years old, had eight first quarter points to keep us within touching distance as we trailed 15-23 at the end of the first period.

Continued below…

.

Our lack of match practice was apparent at this stage as our opponents were much sharper. Our defense was much improved in the second quarter and we managed to get into our flow on offense.

Sean Pollman-Daamen was outstanding in this period and we trailed at half time 42-49.

We started the 3rd really well and got the lead down to just 3 but a combination of tiredness and foul trouble came against us and we fell further behind ending the quarter behind 63-75.

Dean Rusk and Tim Pollman-Daamen were getting into the game at this stage but KCYMS kept the scoreboard ticking over to extend their lead to 18 points with just 5 minutes to play.

It was at this juncture that the boys showed tremendous character and drive. With Aivaras, Sean and Zygi hitting some key buckets we managed to reduce the lead to 1 point with just over two minutes remaining.

Tim was unlucky to be fouled out when playing great defense and this was a huge turning point in the game. We had to put our opponents to the foul line in the dying moments which inflated their lead. The final score was 83-89.

The players couldn’t have given any more and the game could have gone either way. We are certainly very proud of them all. Well done to KCYMS and we wish them the best of luck in their semifinal against Marian of Dublin.

Top scorers for Imperials:

Sean Pollman-Daamen 34

Aivaras Uosis 17

Tim Pollman-Daamen 12

The launch of the Tralee Imperials academy at Sandy Feet Farm in Camp on Friday.

TRALEE Imperials were delighted to launch their academy on Friday afternoon in Sandy Feet Farm, Camp, one of the club’s sponsors.

The club have grown in numbers every year and last year brought in an initiative where the two professional players from Tralee Warriors attended training sessions with the younger age groups, including the academy, and this was a success.

Following on from that, the club has appointed as Youth and Coaching Development Officer Mr. Darragh O’ Hanlon. He is a Bachelor of Business in Sport and Science along with a number of other courses.

He is also a valuable member of the Tralee Warriors since they formed. Darragh will be responsible for making out a programme which will be used at all Academy sessions.

Tralee Imperials Club To Take Part In Jr. NBA League

.
John Dowling, Chairperson of Tralee Imperials Basketball Club.

TRALEE Imperials will be one of 13 clubs nationwide to take part in the inaugural Jr. NBA league this year.

The league will run from October to December, culminating in a festival of games at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

The Junior NBA is a global youth basketball programme that will reach more than 26 million children in 71 countries through camps, clinics, skills challenges, league play and outreach events.

John Dowling, Chairperson of Tralee Imperials said it was a great honour to be chosen to take part.

.

“It’s a huge thing for the club. Hundreds of clubs applied for this so it’s great to be picked. The groundwork for the programme has already been done by Jimmy Diggins, Darragh O’Hanlon and TY students who have worked with local schools teaching basketball skills to pupils.”

The finer details of what is involved still have to be finalised, but it is understood the club will link in three local schools in the area to provide coaching and support for the league.

The schools will play each other and can arrange games with the three other Munster clubs chosen.

“They’ll also play during half-time in Warriors home games and there’ll be a big jamboree in December where the kids will get NBA gear and play in a tournament. It’ll be a huge thing for them to say they’ve played in the Jr. NBA,” said John.

The clubs are a mix of Super League and National League clubs as well as a number of clubs who play regionally.

The thirteen clubs who will be taking part are:

Athlone BC (Westmeath)

Ballincollig BC (Cork)

East Cavan Eagles (Cavan)

Killester BC (Dublin)

Liffey Celtics BC (Kildare)

Limerick Celtics (Limerick)

Neptune BC (Cork)

THE Tralee Imperials u18/u20 men have both reached the national cup quarter finals.

This is historic for the basketball club as it is only their 4th year in the competitions and the 1st year they have reached both quarter finals.

Both teams have been drawn against Neptune who are the power houses in the competition so they certainly have the work cut out for them.

The Under 18s faced KCYMS Killorglin (twice), Phoenix and Maree on the way to the quarters where they face defending All-Ireland champions Neptune BC on Friday, November 25, in Cork.

THE Tralee Imperials U18 Boys have made club history by completing the double this season, capturing both the u18 division 1 county cup and league titles as a  77-70 victory over a very strong St. Mary’s side sealed top position on the league table on Monday night.

The game was closely fought with the Castleisland side leading for most of it, and were 40-33 up at half time, but the Tralee boys showed great determination and strength to finish out the game with a win.

Other scorers on the night included Dara Devine (14pts), captain Keelan Crowe (11pts), Philip Corkery (5pts) and Kieran Mangan (5pts). Overall it was an excellent team effort with Patrick Kearney and Robbie Dinan playing their part in defence and the boys on the sideline encouraging their team mates to fight for every ball.

It was a fantastic end to a very successful season for Imperials, including reaching the final 8 in the National Cup.

Credit is due to the coaches, John Dowling and Rick Leonard, and team manager, Sarah Dinan, for their time and dedication throughout the season, and the club thanked Leahy Construction Ltd. for their continued sponsorship.

Tralee ImperialsRESULTS FOR THE WEEK.

The final of the u16 Boys KABB Cup took place on Sunday 10th January at Presentation, Killarney.

Tralee Imperials faced the undefeated favourites KCYMS.

The game started off well for Tralee Imperials, with great energy and heart shown by the underdogs. The first quarter ended 16-11 to Tralee Imperials.

In the second quarter, Killorglin stormed back into the game with great hustle and defence, which gave them the lead at the end of the quarter 19-22.

Tralee Imperials answered back in the third quarter, with a run of their own, keeping the game very tight, almost going basket for basket. Killorglin maintained a one point lead at the end of the quarter.

The final quarter started very well for Tralee, and at one stage they had a seven point lead, but three straight 3 pointers by Killorglin game them back the lead. In the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Tralee were down by two points, but a very courageous drive to the basket by Aidan Mangan tied the game with 20 seconds to go, bringing the score to 47-47

Overtime of 3 minutes was added on, and even though Tralee Imperials put up a great fight, KCYMS proved why they are undefeated, with final score being 49-53 to KCYMS.

Team Garveys v Oblates Dynamoes

This was always going to be a classic. Cup finalists Oblates playing v Team Garveys in Mounthawk.. Game started very lively with Deirdre Geaney scoring in the fist few seconds, this was followed by score from Rheanne.

At quarter was basket for basket with alot of misses on both sides. 16 a piece end of 1st qtr… Team Garveys came out on fire 2nd qtr and it was a joy to watch With some amazing rebounding and fast passes up the court they ended jjat half time 35 v 25.

There was a fantastic atmosphere in hall with a large attendance and our under 11.s with the help of Garvey the mascot provided a very exciting and amusing half time entertainment.

3rd qtr resumed but this time it was Oblates who answered back with them outscoring 16 v 2 and leaving a shortfall of 4 heading into final qtr.

It was still all to play for and looked at times like we could win the game but in fairness to Oblates they held on and were up 10 points withs seconds remaining. Sinead Mackessy who has just returned to the bench and was top scorer on the night put up a final shot and scored leaving Oblates winning by 8.

Well done on a very entertaining game and huge thanks to Liam Culloty for stepping in in absence of Mark who had to return to USA for family reasons. It was great to see Sinead back in the squad and she hasnt lost of any of her skills… Next game is away to Den Joes Castleisland next Saturday and we ask you to come out and support in force wearing your club colours.

Tralee ImperialsRESULTS FOR THE WEEK

What a weekend in Basketball both nationally and at a Co. Level.

The club were involved in 4 of the 5 finals on Sunday and gave some tremendous performances that we are so proud of and well done to all involved.

U11 Girls

These girls were 1st on and played with great energy and provided everyone with a thrilling encounter. Unfortunetly they lost by 2 baskets. Fantastic effort for such young girls and this team are team to be watched for the future. Many thanks to Coaches Niamh Collins and Helen Rodgers.

U18 Girls.

Next up was the older girls and what can I say. Anyone who was privileged to be in attendance will tell you it was a cracker. The game went to 3 overtimes despite the girls thinking they had won as the time had elasped and we were 2 points up.

However a decision was made that a basket scored by Castleisland after buzzer went was valid and ended in another extra time. At the end of 3rd overtime with 3 of our players fowled off Castleisland were deemed the winners by single point. There was outrage after in the hall and to say that Tralee Imperials werent robbed is an understatement. Again massive thanks to coach Liam Culloty and their sponsor Four Star Pizza.

U18 Boys

Well done to our u18 boys who won the KABB u18 Cup last Sunday. It was a historic win over St. Mary’s, the final score 61-58. The side from Castleisland led Tralee by 7pts at half time but the boys had a very strong 3rd quarter out scoring St. Mary’s 14-6. Tralee led 42-41 going on to the final quarter.

Despite 3s from Shane O’Connell and Adam Donoghue from St. Mary’s, our boys had the mental strength to finish out the game with scores from captain Keelan Crowe, Ryan Leonard and Dara Devine. Patrick Kearney made a free throw and grabbed a vital rebound to finish out the game. A special mention to Kieran Mangan and Robbie Dinan who gave their all underneath the boards.

Final Score: Tralee 61 St. Mary’s 58 Top scorers: Leonard (27), Devine (16), K. Crowe (10). Team: Michael Linnane, Deaglán Crowe, Ryan Leonard, Patrick Kearney, Keelan Crowe, Dara Devine, Rory O’Connor, Kieran Mangan, Dovydas Baltonis and Robbie Dinan.

Well done to the boys and their coaches John Dowling and Rick Leonard.

Thanks to all our supporters and team sponsor Leahy Construction Ltd. Focus now turns to the remaining fixtures in the league, with the next game against local rivals, St. Brendan’s, on January 25th in Mounthawk at 7.30pm.

U16 Boys

As if we hadnt endured enough we had to witness another classic game v KCYMS. Imperials got the better start with some fantastic scores and link ups between Daire Kennelly and Tristan Raymond.

The game switched leads numerous times and again it was nail biting stuff to watch. They lost in the end by a single point and a more detailed report will be given next week. Well done boys. You should be very proud as we are of you. Huge thank you to Jimmy Philip and Anne for all the support you give these boys and to Premier Financial Services for their sponsorship.

On behalf of the club i would like to thank the Co Board for hosting such an amazing event. Alot of hard work is evident here and is much appreciated.

KERRY stars Kieran Donaghy and Paul Galvin lent their support to the Tralee Imperials fundraising fashion show on Friday night at the Fels Point Hotel.

The Stacks man judged the Best Dressed competitions while the Vanguard range from Paul Galvin was paraded on the catwalk by members of the club at the event from which Kerry Hospice also benefitted.

There was also some great style on the night from those present, who enjoyed a champagne reception and the latest ladies fashions worn by Upfront models and Imperials members.

Yesterday we brought you some images from the night (click here) and here’s some more.

THERE will be top fashions, super prizes and Kerry GAA stars present at a fundraiser for Tralee Imperials and the Kerry Hospice later this month.

Taking place at the Fels Point Hotel on Friday, November 27, Paul Galvin’s new collection for Dunnes Stores will be displayed on the catwalk, while his Kerry team-mate Kieran Donaghy will help judge the best dressed competitions on the night.

Tralee Imperials Chairman, John Dowling, said the funds raised are vital for the club and of course Kerry Hospice.

“We’ve tied in with Kerry Hospice and that’s very important to us. We are a basketball club and feel it’s very important to give something back to a charity. We plan to make this an annual event. We have two senior teams going and it takes money to organise that. Our sponsors have been very generous, but we need to raise money ourselves. The money raised from an event like this will go into the running of every part of the club,” he said.

Ted Moynihan of Kerry Hospice was glad of the support from Tralee Imperials.

“We’re always grateful to anyone who organises a fundraiser for us. We do need the money as this new palliative care building is costing in the region of €6m and we’re committed to contributing €400,00o a year for five years to staffing it. As well as that, we need to find €100,000 a year for home care services,” he said.

Best Dressed Lady and Gents prizes will be judged by TraleeToday.ie columnist Orlagh Winters and Kerry star Kieran Donaghy.

Basketball in town got a boost with the selection of Ryan Leonard and Philip Corkery for the national side in the U18 and U15 categories.

After being selected to the Irish development squad in 2012, Leonard, won a spot on the final 12 that competed in the U16 European Championships in Macedonia in 2014. He was the only player from Kerry on any of the Irish squads competing that summer.

The side play their second home game of the Ladies National League Division One against Fr Matthews of Cork. The game will take place in Mercy Mounthawk gym at 7:30pm, Saturday evening.

So far this season, the Imperials side have won one and lost one. They get off to a great start to the year with a win away to IT Carlow, but lost last Saturday evening to a much fancied NUIG Mystics side.

They’ll want to get the show back on the road this Saturday and what better way to do it than a win over a Cork team.

Our under 20 Boys ( Sponsored by Kirbys Brogue Inn ) played their National Cup game vs St. Vincents Dublin. This game was a thriller and had the audience on their feet. Halftime score was 33 St. Vincents – 24 for our boys.

They were still down 9 at the end of the 3rd Quarter. In the last quarter, with the crowd cheering them on, they were within a basket of equalising with seconds on the clock, but it wasn’t to be. Final score: 67 – 63.

Our Club Shop is now open and purchases can be made at the Academy every Saturday between 10 and 12. Get your Christmas orders in now.

Finally the Club would like to sympathize with Michael Quirke and his family on the death of his father Michael Quirke Sr. late of Lohercannon, Tralee.

PHOTOS: Fans Cheer On Imperials But No Joy For Two Teams

TWO Tralee Imperials sides were out in action yesterday at Mercy Mounthawk gym, but there was no joy in either game.

First up was Team Brogue in the Under 20 National Cup tie against St Vincent’s 2 in the early afternoon.

In a thrilling game, Team Brogue just lost out 63 to 67. Team Brogue were two points behind with just 20 seconds left and on the attack, but a missed three point effort and a counter attack saw St Vincent’s seal the victory with two free throws after a foul.

In the Ladies National League game later on Saturday, Team Garvey’s had a disappointing evening, going down 36-56 to NUIG Mystics.

Despite the loss, the ladies were well supported on in the gym and the club is encouraging people to come along to the games to support both teams.

Bernsen Back Coaching In Tralee With Imperials

mark-bernsen
Mark Bernsen.

FORMER Tralee Tigers coach, Mark Bernsen, has returned to Ireland to become Director of Basketball Operations with Tralee Imperials.

The name of Mark Bernsen will be well known to many who follow the sport of basketball in the county, as he has previously coached in Tralee when he was with Tigers during their sojourn in the Super League.

The American native has over 35 years coaching experience in basketball working in the US with the likes of Missouri State alongside legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour, Jefferson and Moberly Community Colleges, Missouri University and the University of Idaho.

He has been coaching professionally in Switzerland for the last number of years and Imperials are delighted to make such a high profile signing.

Chairman John Dowling is delighted that Imperials have secured the services of Mark on a full time basis.

“We are thrilled that he has agreed to become our Director of Basketball Operations and we are really looking forward to benefitting from his vast knowledge and experience,” said John Dowling.

While Bernsen’s main coaching duties will be with the Senior Ladies and u20 Men’s team that will compete in Division 1 of the National League as well as in the County League, Mark will perform a number of other duties including overseeing the underage programme at Imperials.

Team Brogue Tralee Basketball Club will be the competition name for the Men u20’s team which will compete in the National League Division 1 as well as the County League.

The club is delighted to welcome Kirby’s of the Brogue Inn as title sponsors for the Men’s team. Kirby’s are one of Tralee’s top sporting families and both are really looking forward to the partnership.

This is a big season at this level with the introduction of the Hula Hoops National Intermediate Club Championship so this team will have lots to play for.

The senior Women’s team has been at the forefront of the game in the country over the last number of years. Regular qualification and winning of Cup finals and also League titles has seen them consistently amongst the best in the country.

While the squad is being finalised there will be a number of new names on the team sheet including that of French player Juanita Robayo who will bring that continental flair to the squad.

The plan is to get this squad into the Women’s SuperLeague in the coming seasons and Chairman John Dowling is eagerly looking forward to the new season.

“Everyone in Imperials is excited to get the new season underway with Mark Bernsen at the head of operations. We will know our squads very shortly and once Mark arrives in the next two weeks preseason training will get underway so it’s all systems go for what promises to be a great season,” said John Dowling.

PEOPLE of all ages involved with Tralee Imperials gathered at O’Donnell’s in Mounthawk for the club’s annual awards evening on Friday.

The club has about 500 members and is making huge strides over the past few years.

“It was a celebration of the year for the club, the successful teams and the not so successful teams,” said John Dowling of Tralee Imperials.

“It recognises their efforts and how they’ve improved over the years. Every coach gave an MVP [Most Valuable Player] and MIP [Most Improved Player] award which has a positive effect and motivates the kids,” said John.

The senior club is making strides nationally with players being included on an All-Star team.

“We have three players this year – Loretta Maher, Emma Sherwood and Lynn Jones – who got on the All-Star All-Ireland team, which is the pick of all the teams in the national league. Loretta Maher and Emma Sherwood actually made the first five, with three other Americans, so they were the only two Irish, and Lynn Jones made the second five,” said John.

“That’s great going forward. We weren’t so successful this year at national league level, but we’re hoping this year to go stride for stride next year, because the underage structure seems to be working so well and it’s a huge club,” said John.

With 140 kids between the ages of five and nine training every week with the academy, the future certainly looks bright for Tralee Imperials.

In the Women’s National League Division table-topping clash, Garvey’s succumbed to the potent outside shooting of the Laois outfit before a large crowd at Mounthawk Gym on Saturday last.

Portlaoise , with the highly impressive US import Kelsey Wolfe , were in determined mood from the tip-off and took the game to the home side with many impressive fast break scores and white hot spot up shooting.

Imperials played well to remain in contention throughout the encounter but poor finishing in high percentage positions proved to be their undoing. A 26pts to 17pts lead at the end of the first quarter did not flatter the visitors and with experienced guard Maeve O’Sullivan setting the tone with two successful long range efforts Imperials knew they had a fight on their hand to topple the rampant Portlaoise team.

The second quarter saw home team captain Lynn Jones match up on Wolfe and she dramatically curtailed the American’s scoring influence however the outside accuracy of O’Sullivan continued to hurt Imperial from beyond the arc.

For Tralee, Emma Sherwood was not found wanting with defensive intensity and strong drives to the basket keeping the locals in game. Imperials had an opportunity to whittle the lead down to three points coming up the the half time break but costly turnovers and clinical opportunism from Portlaoise meant that Garvey’s trailed 34-27 at the half time buzzer.

Both sides resumed with increased intensity and the pace was relentless in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

Portlaoise continued to maintain their lead despite Loretta Maher, Michelle Hoare and Amy Fitzgerald putting the pressure on with some great offensive rebounding. Cassandra Buckley , as well as curbing the considerable threat of O’Sullivan, was becoming increasingly influential as the quarter wound down with the advantage still with the visitors 53-42.

The final quarter saw the Midlanders consolidate their position with Kelsey Wolfe displaying all the experience and skills that made her an elite player in the prestigious NCAA. While she averages 36.3pts per game in the league she also is adept at bringing her teammates into the action and deftly creating scoring chances with astute passes.

Imperials did come within five points with a little over two minutes remaining but the visitors proved their superiority by converting some tough shots under pressure and converting late opportunities from the free throw line.

Garvey’s next outing is against Oblate Dynamos in Dublin on February 1. Imperials: L. Maher 20pts, E. Sherwood 19, L. Jones 9, C.Buckley 5, M. Hoare 4, D. Kearney 3, A. Fitzgerald, R. O’Shea, R. Lucey, D. Pierse, M. Carmody.
