The Community Foundation-funded water refill station is set off by a  custom-made stone plinth (funded by the Kerry County Council Tralee MD team) which features the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ‘wheel’ and the symbols for SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production).

The refill station will work towards achieving SDGs 6 and 12 through free access to clean water and by facilitating a reduction in single-use plastic respectively.

Call For Greater Garda Visibility In Tralee Town Park

.

CONCERNS were expressed about crime and policing in Tralee Town Park at the online meeting of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee meeting on Friday afternoon.

A question was submitted by Chris O’Shea from Tralee asking what were the gardai doing about “open drug dealing and drinking sessions in our Town Park?”

Responding, An Garda Síochána said they “are not tolerating any such activities and are proactive in our response to drug abuse, drug dealing and antisocial behaviour.”

“Gardaí in Tralee continually perform regular patrols at Tralee Town Park on a daily basis. The situation within the town environs is continuously reviewed and when deemed appropriate targeted operations are put in place to tackle this issue.”

“Additional resources have been allocated to the Divisional Drugs Unit, which highlights our ongoing commitment to tackling Drugs throughout the county. Public areas are monitored by Garda members for the consumption of alcohol.”

“We would urge members of the public to report antisocial behaviour and also ask that people behave in a responsible manner with regard to the consumption of alcohol, particularly in public areas.”

Chairman of the Kerry Green Party Anluan Dunne said he would like to see more foot and bike patrols in the Town Park rather than a patrol car in the area.

Sinn Fein Kerry TD, Pa Daly said there was a lack of garda visibility in Tralee town centre and in the Town Park where groups of young people congregate. He said more gardai patrolling the park would make people feel more safe.

MEMBERS of the public are being invited to have their say on the future of Tralee Town Park.

Kerry County Council is currently developing a strategic plan for the park and is inviting submissions and opinions from park users and the wider public.

.

Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council is asking people to complete an online survey which can be found on the homepage of Kerry County Council’s website www.kerrycoco.ie.

Copies of the survey are also available at County Buildings in Rathass, Tralee Library and the Tralee Municipal District offices at Princes Quay. Local secondary schools have also come on board and will be out and about over the coming weeks in Tralee Town Centre encouraging and assisting the general public to complete the surveys.

Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Jim Finucane said that the Town Park is a gem at the heart of Tralee and that its future development must have the input of the general public at its heart.

“This wonderful amenity belongs to the people of Tralee and the wider county so we want to hear what they have to say – what should be done to improve facilities, how can the park be improved, what more needs to be done to promote the park. I also want to thank the local Secondary Schools for coming forward to work with the Council to encourage everyone to complete the survey.”

Municipal District Officer, Jean Foley, said: “The strategy being developed will examine the resources, facilities, activities and potential uses of The Green to determine how the current provisions can be improved for all to enjoy.

‘The community’s views are fundamental in the formation of this strategy. As a first step in the consultation process, Kerry County Council has developed this questionnaire to assist in ascertaining your views and vision. We are encouraging everyone to have their say.”

The closing date for receipt of completed surveys is Friday, February 21, 2020. The initiative is supported by Tralee Chamber Alliance, IT Tralee, North East and West Kerry Development and local secondary schools.

Second Gardener Appointed For Tralee Town Park

.

KERRY County Council have appointed a second gardener to maintain Tralee Town Park.

Welcoming the announcement made at the Tralee Municipal District meeting on Monday, Sinn Féin Councillor Pa Daly said; “We have been highly critical on the state of the town park in recent months, the park was left deteriorate after the retirement of the previous gardeners and it was a source of huge disappointment to the many people in Tralee who cherish their town park or the Green as most people in the town refer to it.

“This is an issue we have brought time and time again to the attention of management of Kerry County Council.”

.

“I very much welcome this positive announcement that should finally bring our park back to the high standard that both locals and tourists alike expect.”

“I have also asked management to explore if we can let those who have a keen interest in gardening to utilise their skills on a voluntary basis in the park. I have spoken to several people who would love to be given an opportunity to show off their skills and to help support our park.”

Tralee Town Park Playground To Be Upgraded

.

TRALEE Town Park is to see upgrading works in the near future including the provision of inclusive play equipment.

Following a motion from Cllr Jim Finucane, where he asked the Council to look at the further enhancement and development of the play area in the park, Council management replied that recent upgrading works have just been undertaken to the surface of the playground.

Also, power washing of the surface was to take place after the Easter school holidays. Tenders have been received for the provision of inclusive play equipment in a €35,000 expansion to the facility.  It is hoped this will start in six weeks but it is dependent on equipment delivery lead in periods.

Cllr Finucane welcomed the funding and said more needed to be done to market the playground which is a great asset to the town park.

Cllr Terry O’Brien, while welcoming the funding, said the Council needed to do something in co-operation with the gardai, to prevent the playground from being overrun by teenagers and older children. He said the area needs to be policed properly.

Festival Marks Brendan And Lorna’s Years Of Work In The Rose Garden

.

A HUSBAND and wife team of gardeners received a small gift from the Rose of Tralee Festival on Wednesday to mark their upcoming retirement.

Brendan and Lorna Enright, who live in Causeway, have been tending to the Rose Garden in the town park since it was created in 1986 but Brendan had been working in the park before that.

“I’m 40 years here and Lorna has worked for 33 years. I started working on the gardens on August 3, 1978 so I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years,” he said.

It’s been a labour of love for the couple who have made sure the garden has been looking stunning over the years.

Continued below…

.

“We’ve made many, many friends here and met so many people from other countries and talked about what they do with their own gardens. The years have flown by,” said Brendan.

While Brendan and Lorna were supposed to retire three weeks ago, they have been persuaded to stay on for a few more months due to a delay in getting new staff to take up their work. When they do retire, they won’t be idle though.

“We’d like to do a little travelling, to do things we couldn’t fit in when we were busy because we’d be working throughout the summers. I’d like to take up more reading and I’ve a great interest in cooking and we’ll catch up with friends. Also, we’ve a large garden at home that’ll keep me busy,” said Brendan.

The flowers in the garden were looking stunning earlier this summer, but were a little scarce on Wednesday. That will change dramatically in the next fortnight though said Brendan.

“It bloomed early but we’re missing out on the second bloom by about 10 to 14 days, so if you come back in two weeks this garden will be in full bloom. Every September is A1 and we get roses until about November,” he said.

Cllr Says Town Park Not Receiving Enough Resources As Previous Years

A TRALEE Municipal District Councillor is calling for more resources for Tralee Town Park after she said it was not receiving the same attention as previous years.

Sinn Fein Cllr Toireasa Ferris asked for clarification on whether there was a full-time caretaker in the park, saying the grass wasn’t cut until May, only after representations were made by councillors.

“The CEO [of Kerry County Council] needs to be asked why our town park isn’t getting the attention it did under Tralee Town Council,” said Cllr Ferris.

Continued below…

.

She said a motion should be brought before the full council on the issue as Moira Murrell needs to be made aware how important it is to have adequate resources in the Town Park.

“It’s the capital town and the largest amenity we have and it’s outrageous that we are reviewing the situation. It wouldn’t happen in Killarney,” she said.

Cllr Ferris did commend the Council for their action on Sunday evening and Monday morning after reports of overflowing bins and rubbish in the park on Sunday morning.

In reply, Colm Lynch of Kerry County Council, said there is an acting caretaker in the town park — who is full-time — but he is not living in the caretaker’s house at the moment and that situation is being reviewed. He said it is desirable that the caretaker would live in the Town Park.

Continued below…

.

He said the grass wasn’t cut until later this year as the ground was still very soft after the bad weather up until late spring. Mowing was, however, completed around the edges.

Manager of Tralee Municipal District, Michael Scannell, said the town park continues to receive excellent reviews from locals and visitors alike to the town. He said it is looking well and there are adequate resources there.

Cllr Norma Foley wanted to acknowledge the excellent facility that is the town park and praised the gardeners, two of whom are retiring in the coming weeks.

Mayor Wants An Adult Exercise Facility In Town Park

.
An outdoor adult exercise facility in Spain.

KERRY County Council are to look into installing an adult exercise facility in Tralee Town Park.

Mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley, asked the local authority to investigate the potential of installing the facility.

The Council said it would investigate the feasibility of the request and they would look at possible locations to identify the most suitable one.

Continued below…

.

The provision of the equipment will be contingent on finding the location and a funding source. Cllr Foley said it was important to pursue this project as it has huge potential and would be very positive for Tralee.

Cllr Toireasa Ferris agreed and said facilities like this can be seen all over the world and it can only be a positive thing for people to be more active.

The entrance to the Town Park is looking mighty.

YESTERDAY we brought you some images showing how good the town centre is looking at the moment.

We also took some photos of the Town Park on the same day with the intention of using them in that article, but having walked into the park I realised that the town’s greatest asset deserves a showcase of its own.

There were hordes of people with cameras capturing the explosion of colour in the rose garden and I overheard many of them extolling its beauty. We’ve said it before, but the park really is the jewel in the crown of Tralee.

It would be great if someone could fly a drone over this part of the Park this time of the year, put it on YouTube and show it at its best.

Meanwhile, here’s some shots of the garden which don’t do it justice. Just take a walk there sometime.
