Zoe Ncube and Mikayla O’Sullivan received their runners-up prizes for the Poetry Aloud competition this week.

TWO students from Presentation Secondary School, Tralee, were among the winners of PoetryAloud, the competition which promotes the joy of speaking and listening to poetry amongst post-primary students across the island of Ireland.

Zoe Ncube from Presentation secondary school, Tralee was a runner-up in the senior category of the all-island competition, and was joined at the awards by Mikayla O’Sullivan also from Presentation Secondary School who was named joint runner-up in the Junior category.

Organised by the National Library of Ireland (NLI) and Poetry Ireland, and supported by UCC, the competition for 2021, in which students spoke a number of different poems, took place virtually because of the pandemic and the winners were announced in May.

The winners were presented with their prizes in person this week in the surroundings of the WB Yeats Library at the NLI. The competition has been putting poetry to the forefront of students’ minds since 2007. It has three categories: junior, intermediate, and senior.
