At the presentation of a cheque at the Chemotherapy Unit on Friday were, in front, General Manager of the UHK Fearghal Grimes with Mary Fitzgerald and Therese Carroll of the UHK Sports and Social Club with Chemotherapy Day Unit staff and other Sports and Social Club members.

THE proceeds from a major event in the Brandon Hotel back in March were handed over at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) on Wednesday afternoon.

After last year’s ‘Sickly Come Dancing’, the UHK Sports and Social Club organised another show-stopping event in aid of Chemotherapy  Day Unit, ‘UHK’s Got Talent’ and it raised €24,000.

Held on March 29 in The Brandon Hotel, the night was a huge success with some comparing it to a West End production!

All performers were UHK staff under the direction of Honor Hurley which created a fun filled night for both performers and audience alike, showcasing the talent at the hospital.

It was also a huge morale boost for the hospital staff, bringing together people from across all departments inclusive of hospital management .

Coupled with last year’s fundraising efforts, they have raised an outstanding €92,000 for the Day Unit.

The Chemotherapy Day Unit services need to be expanded due to the increasing patient numbers.

A newly formed charity “Comfort for Chemo Kerry “ is being established to fundraise for a stand alone Chemotherapy Day Unit in order  to ensure  patients can be treated in a purpose-built facility .
