THE site of a significant event in the War of Independence in west Kerry was investigated recently as part of archaeological works on the N86 road improvement scheme, the details of which have been produced in a short documentary which has been published online.

Archaeological Management Solutions Ltd. (AMS), who carried out archaeological works on the N86 Ballynasare Lower to Annascaul and Doonore North to Ballygarret Road Improvement Scheme recently undertook a metal detection survey at the site of the Ballinclare ambush, which occurred near Annascaul in 1920.

To showcase this work and provide an historical context to the archaeological survey, AMS have produced a film with contributions from local historian Noel Ó Murchú (author of ‘The War in the West’) and the landowner of the field in which the ambush took place, John Hanafin.

The metal detection survey identified a number of metal finds across the site including buttons, a lead buckle, a lead bag seal, and other objects. Although these cannot be definitively linked to the ambush itself, the survey offered a fantastic opportunity to further investigate and record the historic site in advance of road construction.
