University Hospital Kerry sign 3AN 18 year old woman in University Hospital Kerry is still waiting to be transferred to Cork or Limerick hospital for a life-saving operation, after her brother went public on national radio yesterday about her situation.

Breda Kevane has been in an induced coma in intensive care in Tralee for the past 11 days, but needs to be transferred to Cork or Limerick to have a special operation to clear her airways. However the HSE says there is no bed available at the moment.

“If she stays in Kerry for  another two or three  days, the most likely outcome is that she will die,” her brother Paddy told George Hook on Newstalk on Wednesday evening.

As of Thursday morning, Breda is still in Kerry and this morning Paddy tweeted; “Breda is still stable and we have now been promised by HSE that they will do their best to get her a bed today. As of 9:15 no bed yet.” Paddy told George Hook that the only options are Cork or Limerick, as Dublin and Belfast would be too far to take her.

He said his parents are devastated and gave their blessing to Paddy to go public with their plight in a bid to get help. The HSE said it would be inappropriate to comment on individual cases.

They said they had contacted the two hospitals involved to get an update on the ICU situation and stressed that patients are prioritised on the basis of clinical need.

“Get a bed HSE!” said an exasperated Hook on the show yesterday. You can listen to the full podcast here.
