Zoe 1IN many ways, as a community, Tralee is very lucky to have so many people to look to for inspiration. We have our sporting heroes, our fashion heroes and our general local heroes.

If we didn’t have these people to look up to, I fear that such expression would hardly be encouraged at all.

Teenagers generally like to do their own thing (I speak from such a perspective) but they still like to have something or someone to encourage them and to look up too.

Sporting heroes and intellectual heroes (I mean those who get 100% in maths and science) seem to be in plentiful supply and it is generally the creative types that are in need of some encouragement.

In my last school, if you weren’t achieving in science or sports or debating; it felt to me like you weren’t achieving. I am happy to say that I made a few ‘creative’ advancements while I was there. I definitely wasn’t looking for any attention for any of it, but it was just the fact that it wasn’t even mentioned made me realise just how under the radar the creative world was.

About two weeks ago, I saw the movie ‘The Uncountable Laughter of the Sea’, by Patrick O’Neill which has just finished its run at Tralee Omniplex. I have to say that it really inspired me, and I believe that it would inspire many other creative young minds as well. (If you don’t mind me calling my young mind creative and all…)

The movie showcased the beautiful scenery that we have right here in Kerry. All the mountains, rivers and trees in Kerry was showcased to perfection with beautiful aerial shots and sweeping pans. The film itself centred around the thoughts and musings of Father Padraig. In Patrick O’Neill’s own words, he was to be the ‘prism through which he shone the light’.

Father Padraig shared his thoughts on the meaning of life and society, as well as sharing his own personal story and each word he spoke was just as riveting as the next. If you are a religious or a philosophical person, then I truly believe that you would get immense value out of this film. But, as I am neither, I was inspired in a different way, but I think that it had just as much impact.

I was creatively inspired. This film was created with a very low budget and was really mostly driven by inspiration and sheer force of will. No matter what the outcome of the film, that is enough inspiration in itself.

This is the kind of people that we need to look up in the film and creative industry. It shows us that no matter what the obstacles, you have the power to achieve greatness through strength, determination and creativity.

Now that seems like a lot to get from one movie; but if you don’t quite know what I am talking about, then you obviously haven’t seen it. Lucky for you, the showing has been extended for another week, and you have the opportunity to be inspired and go see it. It will only take an hour out of your day, and you will reap the rewards.

Let us support those who provide such creative inspiration; and let us support Irish.
