Cabinet At Tralee Antiques Shop Causing A Holy Show

CAN you see the resemblance?

The owner of a Tralee antiques store contacted us after a photo of a cabinet caused a bit of a stir on their facebook page.

Tom O’Connell of Vintage Vendors in Moyderwell said the interesting aspect of the piece is people’s interpretation of the natural pattern of the wood grain on the door, which to many has a striking resemblance to that of The Virgin Mary.

“Another interesting fact about the cabinet is that if the door is removed and turned upside down the image can be interpreted in the same way,” said Tom.

He said they posted pictures of the cabinet on Facebook and the response has been amazing with the pictures being viewed over 11,000 times.

Many have left comments agreeing that the resemblance is striking and they have even had plenty visitors to view the cabinet in person, but not everyone that comes to visit can see the resemblance.

“But I must admit that when a statue of “Our Lady of Lourdes” was offered up for comparison the resemblance is undeniable,” said Tom.

Tom said he knows little as to the origins of the cabinet other than that it is an Edwardian mahogany display cabinet c. 1910 – 1915 stamped Greenlands Ltd, Hereford England and that it came from a residence in Northern Ireland before being purchased by a Tralee man.

As reigning All-Ireland U14 Schools Basketball champions, Pres Castleisland has been granted an automatic invitation to represent Ireland at the inaugural International Schools Federation (ISF) World Schools U15 Basketball Cup in Zadar, Croatia in March 2020.

When John Enright, Basketball coach for Presentation Secondary School Castleisland, was planning the year ahead for the various teams under his guidance, he certainly hadn’t planned a trip to Croatia for his charges.

Excitement is growing amongst the U15 basketballers at the thoughts of representing their school and their country and no doubt it will reach fever pitch by March.

Thoughts have now turned to the serious matter of fundraising as all costs, including flights will have to be met by those participating. Given the community spirit in Castleisland, the girls are hopeful of great support which will make the cost burden easier to manage.

Commenting on the news, school Principal, Katherina Broderick, said she was delighted with the news and it was just reward for the commitment of the girls to basketball in Presentation Castleisland, which is the most successful school in Ireland with 27 All-Ireland titles.
