Tralee Rugby Club News

The Tralee U18 team.

Tralee~Listowel V Castleisland
Listowel~Tralee U18s had a good win over Castleisland on Saturday We started well, with the aid of a stiff breeze and scored two early tries from forward dominance.

The first was scored by the outstanding Cian Regan who crashed over following a series of carries close to the the try line. This was followed by Jerry Finnegan who scored his second try in as many matches after a series of rucks inside the Castleisland 22.

The score of the match went to Emil Beausingeur who outflanked the Castleisland defence on his own 10 metre line before cutting back inside the full back to score a brilliant try under the posts. Seamus Lyne converted again as we finished the half with a commanding 22-0 lead.

Castleisland raised their intensity in the second half and used the wind effectively to pin us back.We failed to hit the heights of the first half as the game became scrappy in the gusting breeze.

Darragh Murphy showed great pace as he raced down the wing from inside his own half to score his first try of the season. Seamus converted again as we finally ran out 29-0 winners.

Match report – U14s: Tralee v Listowel
Congratulations to our under 14s who took away the spoils against Listowel yesterday. Listowel fought to the bitter end which made for an entertaining game.

Great to see such strong performances from our younger players who joined us this year. We wish Ben Sharp a speedy recovery.

Gardaí Issue Warning To Teenagers As Halloween Approaches

.

GARDAI are asking parents to be aware of where their children are on Halloween as they prepare for what is usually their busiest night of the year.

Speaking on Radio Kerry’s ‘Talkabout’ programme on Tuesday afternoon, Garda Cathy Murphy said hundreds of youths congregating at Caherslee and Mounthawk is a serious problem every year.

He said parents are dropping off their children in the area and the teenagers travel around the estates causing problems for residents with their anti-social behaviour.

Garda Murphy also said it is an offence to be in possession of and to light fireworks. If you are caught in possession of a large amount of fireworks there are substantial fines and a maximum prison sentence of up to five years.

She also warned against throwing eggs at people’s property and at vehicles as they could cause drivers to crash. Garda Murphy said Halloween is supposed to be fun, but teenagers and parents need to show more responsibility on the night.

Work Colleagues From Kerry, Cork And Limerick Collect €500,000 Winnings

.
The members of the syndicate from Kostal in Abbeyfeale at National Lottery today.

A GROUP of 68 lucky colleagues from an Abbeyfeale factory were celebrating in the National Lottery’s winners’ room today after they collected a cheque for €500,000 which they won the EuroMillions Plus draw on Friday 18th October.

The group of delighted colleagues who hail from Cork, Kerry and Limerick all work together on the night shift at Kostal, a Limerick based manufacturer of automotive electronic systems.

The winning ticket was sold on Friday 11th October at Twohig’s SuperValu store in Abbeyfeale, and each syndicate member will each take home over €7,000 each.

While the 68 strong syndicate represents a sizeable group to win a National Lottery top prize, it still falls someway short of the record for the biggest ever National Lottery syndicate win which stands at 291 syndicate members from Confey GAA Club in Kildare who won a Lotto prize of €205,520 in 2004.

Michael Herlihy who has been running the syndicate in Kostal for his colleagues for over nine years said: “It’s a lot of work maintaining a work syndicate, especially when you have to look after 68 subscriptions on a regular basis, it becomes hard work in itself. With that being said, the win is all the sweeter when you travel to Lottery HQ with your colleagues to pick up a chequer for a half a million euros.”

After bagging their EuroMillions cheque for €500,000, the delighted work syndicate discussed how the good news of their win spread like wildfire in their local communities and with celebrations coming to a close, spending plans for their winnings now come to the fore:

“With so many people in the syndicate, there wasn’t a hope that we could have kept this quiet. Most of the group have been celebrating since the day after the draw and there has been great excitement in the surrounding communities of Abbeyfeale who are delighted for our win. At the end of the day, we’ve won €500,000 between 68 members and that is a lot of money. Everybody has their own plans which includes car upgrades and holidays but most importantly, two of the group are getting married this year so this win will go a long way to helping them out with their bills,” added Michael Herlihy.

Gardaí Seek Information After Items Stolen From Cars In Ballyard/Cloghers

.

GARDAI are appealing to car owners to lock their vehicles after a number of cases of theft from cars in an area of Tralee last week.

On the night of Monday, October 21 and into the morning of Tuesday, October 22, a number of vehicles were illegally entered in the Ballyard and Cloghers area of town.

Items stolen ranged from loose change to mobile phones and a sat nav device. There was no damage done to the cars and it seems many of them were left unlocked.

Gardaí are appealing for any information and are asking people to please lock their vehicles when unattended. You can contact Tralee Garda Station on 066-7102300.

ST John’s Parish, Tralee, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the competition and dedication of St. John’s Church, Castle Street, in 2020.

A year-long Festival of Faith celebrating this significant occasion commenced on Saturday last when Bishop Ray Browne officially opened the 150th year when he celebrated the 6.10pm Vigil Mass.

Bishop Ray recalled with gratitude and blessing the many generations of parishioners, religious and clergy who have worshiped, served, cared and worked for St. John’s over the past 150 years.

.

St. John’s Church has a special place in the lives of countless Tralee people down through the generations. Each generation, he said, has had to face their own struggles and life experiences and for many, St. John’s Church was their spiritual home.

While circumstances have changed, it is still no different for today’s parishioners. Our place of worship is a common bond that unites all generations.

Bishop Ray reminded all present, that while commemorating and celebrating an occasion such as St. John’s 150th is important and commendable, it is equally important that as a parish faith community that we also rejoice in our present and look forward to the future with renewed vision, commitment and hope.

Bishop Ray aptly summed this up by drawing attention to the words of the slogan chosen for the St. John’s 150 banner ‘A story still unfolding’.

St. John’s will host various liturgical, historical and social events celebrating its 150th over the course of the next twelve months.

The 150th year will conclude with a joint Parish Mission with Our Lady & St. Brendan’s Parish (also celebrating its 50th anniversary) in October 2020. Please visit stjohns.ie for further details.

REPORT: Warriors Lay Down National Cup Marker To Reigning Champs

.

Alan Cantwell on a good away win for Warriors at Pyrobel Killester in the Men’s Superleague…

Pyrobel Killester 63

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 91

Warriors backed up their Pat Duffy National Cup win over Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin on Friday night with a comprehensive victory over their Cup quarter-final opponents Pyrobel Killester in Round 6 of Men’s Super League at the IWA in Clontarf on Sunday.

The Warriors made it four League wins from six this season as they outclassed their rivals by 91-63 with an impressive all-round team performance.

Continued below…

.

A well contested first quarter opened with three major scores, one from Darragh O’Hanlon for the Warriors, and one each from Ciaran Roe and Tomas Fernandez for the hosts, before Michael Westbrooks score from inside saw Killester lead by 3.

Eoin Quigley and Keith Jumper edged the visitors ahead midway through the quarter before some Warriors indiscipline handed Killester a couple of free throws and when Mintautus Bulanovas hit a three and Kieran O’Brien added from under the board Killester were suddenly 8 up.

But two quick baskets from Jonathan Lawton cut the hosts advantage back to 20-15 at quarter time.

The Warriors quickly asserted early in the second and wrestled back the lead with two towering threes from Lawton added to scores from Daniel Jokubaitis, Ivan Bogdanovic and Quigley.

Killester response came from Michael Westbrooks, Fernandez and Bulanovas but when Lawton steadied to fire down another three the Warriors opened up a 15-point lead.

Bogdanovic and Jokubaitis edged the visitors further ahead before Isaac Westbrooks kept Killester in the contest and the scoreline to 41-34 at half time.

The Warriors produced something approaching a perfect quarter of basketball in the third dominating under their own board and scoring at will at the other.

They simply tore the Killester defence apart with a stunning offensive display landing 27 points in the quarter with scores from Lawton with two, Paul Dick and Kieran Donaghy along with threes from Lawton, Bogdanovic and Jokubaitis that powered the Warriors 61-38 ahead.

The only resistance from Killester came from former Swords Thunder star Isaac Westbrooks with scores from inside and out. Keith Jumper, Quigley and Lawton inflicted more pain on the hosts and at the end of the third the contest was all but decided as the Warriors led by 68-46.

The Tralee onslaught continued unabated in the final quarter with Darragh O’Hanlon finding the space to deliver a couple of show-stopping threes.

Pa McCarthy and Rap Buivydas registered their names on the scoresheet and when Lawton and McCarthy again hit the mark the advantage was out to 31.

Fernandez and Roe saw Killester break through the 50-point barrier but the Warriors dominance continued right through to the buzzer.

McCarthy drove to the board for two quality scores in the final minutes to cap an impressive display while Alan Casey and Roe put a fraction more decency on the final scoreline of 91-63.

Pat Price’s side will be looking for a repeat performance when the sides meet in the quarter final of the Pat Duffy National Cup quarter-final on Saturday 30th November at the Tralee Sports Complex.

Scorers:

Killester: Tomas Fernandez 17, Ciaran Roe 10, Isaac Westbrooks 9

Warriors: Jonathan Lawton 24, Darragh O’Hanlon 12, Keith Jumper 10

• Next up for the Warriors is a date with Moycullen next Saturday night at the Tralee Sports Complex – tip off is 7.30pm
