Alan Cantwell on Garveys Tralee Warriors victory at the weekend…
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors reignited their Super League campaign in some style on Saturday night with a devastating display to overpower and overwhelm DCU Saints in the Phoenix Sports Complex in Carrickmacross.
The Warriors were simply in a different class to their opponents throughout the contest and led at the end of all quarters to run out comfortable winners by 104-60 in the end.
It was the perfect response from the Warriors following their indifferent display against DBS Éanna last week and was more a reflection of the Warriors unit particularly when they have players of the calibre of Paul Dick and Rap Buivydas back in action.
Continued below…
From the outset the Warriors looked like a team on a mission and when Darragh O’Hanlon and Eoin Quigley both fired in from inside and out the Warriors were out to an early 10-4 lead.
Charlie Coombes, Martins Provizors and veteran Michael Bonaparte were keeping Saints in the game early on but when Paul Dick, Keith Jumper, Rap Buivydas and Quigley hit four straight scores the visitors were 12 ahead.
Bonaparte again kept the Warriors honest but Jonathan Lawton announced his arrival into the game with a score followed by identical threes to see the Warriors lead by 26-12 at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw the Warriors unleash a breathless and at times breath-taking offensive attack on the DCU Saints basket.
Continued below…
The Tralee side amassed a stunning 32 points in the quarter with 9 different scorers hitting the target.
Daniel Jokubaitis began the onslaught and when Buivydas, Jumper and Paul Dick followed suit the Warriors led by 20. Lawton, Quigley, O’Hanlon, Pa McCarthy and Kieran Donaghy joined in and with the only meaningful resistance from the Saints coming from Bonaparte and Provizors the League champions were out to an unassailable 62-25 lead at half time.
The Warriors maintained their relentless offensive effort in the third headlined by six three pointers from Quigley, Paul Dick and four stunning efforts from Lawton each one better than the next. Bonaparte and Provizors were battling hard to give the Saints fans something to cheers but by three quarter time the Warriors lead was out to 87-38.
Paul Dick continued to torment the Saints defence early in the final quarter but to the hosts credit they continued to seek out scores to put a more reasonable look on the score and when Bonaparte, Kevin Lacey, Dominic Phillipi and Coombes were all in range the home side broke through the 50 point mark.
However Jokubaitis, McCarthy and Lawton pushed the Warriors 98-53 ahead with less than 3’00’’ on the clock. Jokubaitis then fired down a huge three to see the Warriors break through the 100-point barrier. When he added another score from inside for good measure the Warriors eased to victory by 104-60 in the end.
Scorers:
DCU Saints: Michael Bonaparte 29, Martins Provizors 13, Charlie Coombes 6
Warriors: Jonathan Lawton 30, Eoin Quigley 14, Keith Jumper 13

Academy
U6: We had a busy training session for under 6s this morning with over 20 boys & girls. High energy evasion games & ball skills with obstacle courses & match play. Well done to all, especially to our player of the week, Zayd, who put in the best performance of the session. Only one more training session next week before our winter break.. make the most of what’s left of our evenings for practice at home!!
Even indoors over the winter at home obstacle courses, hopping/ balance/ crawling games are all excellent for developing strength & coordination.
Looking forward to seeing all our players next Sunday morning at 10.30 for a fun session & Halloween treats followed by presentation of certificates for all those who participated in our academy this year.
U8: Last Sunday, we hosted Moyvane for blitz games at Under 8 and 10 level in glorious sunshine in Blennerville. There was a huge attendance from both clubs which was great to see. Both Under 8 games were very competitive and it was great to see how much the boys and girls have improved throughout the season.
Thanks to Neilus and former St Pats player Tommy O’Donoghue from Moyvane for co-ordinating their teams on the day. Big thanks to coaches Conor Culloo and Joe for setting out the pitches and to senior player David O’Callaghan for reffing one of the games.
We would also like to especially thanks the parents of the Under 8’s for providing plenty of snacks and goodies for both teams (The Cake from the Turner family went down very well!) and to Under 6 coaches, Fiona and Norma for arranging the catering side of things. Next Sunday is the last day of the season so we really look forward to having all players there so we can issue them with their certs and for some more goodies!! Joe will send out further information on next Sunday during the week.
U10: Last Sunday morning there was a great buzz about the pitch as we were visited by the Under-10s and Under-8s teams from the Moyvane Club. For St. Pats under-10’s we had probably the best gathering of our players for many months.
We were able to set up 2 teams of 8-players on each team and this meant that our players got 45 minutes of good playing time. At the conclusion of the games refreshments by way of snacks and soft drinks were available to the players.
Our thanks go to the parents who baked and brought cakes and treats and who helped to provide our visitors and home players with these delights. Our thanks also to the Moyvane players, coaches and parents for coming to St. Pats and providing good challenging games.
Next Sunday the 20th October will be our last session for 2019 and it would be great if all of our Under-10 squad were present for the end of this season of the Academy.
U12: Well done to our U12 boys who won the St Brendans Board U12 B Blitz held in Caherslee last Tuesday defeating Churchill and Ardfert on their way to the title.

U16 BOYS
We played John Mitchels in the Town League final , division 2 on Sunday morning last and ran out winners in a tight affair with a final score of (0-17 to 2-08) .
We got off to a good start, where after being a point up, Darragh O’ Connor was pulled down in the small square for what surely was a penalty but to be awarded a free which was converted by Danny Hennessy.
Strong runs by Seán Healy and good defending by Jerome Daly, T.J. Heaphy would have been the high points of the first half if it wasn’t for the excellent shift put in by Danny Hennessy from both open play and placed balls scoring 4 points from frees which along with points from Seán Healy, Darragh O’ Connor, Ben O’ Brien and Sam Mccarthy left the half time score 0-08 to 0-04.
The second half saw Mitchels strike for an early goal bringing our lead to the minimum after which we kept our composure and stretched the lead to 5 points again thanks to our free taker Danny Hennessy. Halfway through the half with some poor defending we conceded a second goal which resulted in a tense conclusion to the game. Both teams exchanged points until which resulted in the game ending in a victory in our favour by 3 points.
Our man of the match was undoubtedly Danny Hennessy who ended the game with a haul of 7 points . Others to impress were Seán Healy, Darragh O’ Connor, T.J. Healy, Sam Pituch and Jake Foley.
Team: Seán Collins, Jake Foley, Eric McMahon, Sam Pituch, T.J. Heaphy (0-01) , Jerome Daly (0-01), Matthew Higgins, Danny Hennessy (0-07, 5F) , Enis Reka, Gearóid Meehan, Seán Healy ( 0-03), Ben Hanafin , Darragh O’ Connor ( 0-03, 2F),Sam Mccarthy (0-01), Ben O’ Brien (0-01).
Subjs: Alan O’ Connor ( for injured Matthew Higgins), Kevin Molloy and Cormac Gallagher.

U16 GIRLS
We played Na Gaeil away on Monday last in what was a very keenly contested game. Underfoot conditions made life very difficult for all the players and this combined with a strong breeze blowing towards the dressing room end meant the players were going to have to work extremely hard to get a result in this one especially with the local derby element involved.
We won the toss and had made the decision to play with the breeze but for the first 10 to 12 minutes it looked like we were the ones playing into it.
Na gaeil are a fit ,well coached team and all of them know their jobs on the field as do our team but they went into a very quick 3 point lead. Any delay on our side with the ball in hand was punished and they were on us like a flash which in turn put pressure on the inside forwards as the ball wasn’t coming in fast enough and their markers were all over them.
With 15 minutes in we were 3 points to 1 point point down but we then switched to moving fast ball in and took total control for the second quarter of this game. Our half backs midfield and half forwards were now on top giving good quality ball in and Liana Williams scoring two great goals ,then brought down for a penalty which Aoibhín MacCarthy took.
Two steps back ‘Messi like’ and hit it to the top right corner but it hit the crossbar rebounded and she rushed in to convert at the second attempt. Her dad Colm is obviously teaching her those two step penalty kicks at home or else she watching La Liga at the weekends!!!
Katie Nix then added a point as did Na Gaeil to leave the half time score 3-03 to 0-04 giving us an 8 point lead having had the breeze
.We have a great panel so were able to rotate backs and forwards on and off throughout the game and this was to prove of major benefit in the second half as we knew they would come at us hard and we’d have to work twice as hard to win this.
Na Gaeil started the second half well rattling off another 3 points leaving the gap at 5 but our backs were fighting tooth and nail for every ball.
Kelly Fitzgerald was great in goals again making a few point blank saves along with Katie Dwyer, Leonie Dowling,Alex Sheridan,Maedhbh Hanafin, Hollie Leane ,Jennifer Murphy and Eugenie Kerins all playing well.
Our midfielders Keelin Coffey and Lilly O’ Brien were solid all through marking two really good footballers all evening and up front Kate Kerins, Rachael O’ Donnell,Aoife O Connor working really hard to win ball in the half forward line and stop any Na Gaeil attacks.
Our inside 3 were very good again with Liana Williams, Katie Nix and Aoibhín MacCarthy playing a massive part in this win.
In the second half against a really strong breeze we scored 1-0 4 with Keelin getting a point, Katie Nix, Aoibhín and Liana all scoring points with Lily O’ Brien getting a great goal that gave us a really big boost in that second half .These scores proved vital as the light faded and this game ran towards its conclusion.
Na Gaeil got 2-04 in that second half and we knew they’d go after scores with the breeze but the work rate by our half forwards, midfield ,backs and subs in the final 15 minutes was unreal blocking and pressurising every attack by them.
This was a team performance from beginning to end and all 19 players played their part as it should be.
We would have a lot of respect for this Na Gaeil team so to win this battle was massive for us and get us through to another final this year, The smiles on the faces afterwards told the story as this meant a lot to all the players involved especially as many of them know one another well from school etc. Final Score Na Gaeil 2-08 to KOR 4-07z
We look forward to the final which should happen in the next two week.

Coiste na nÓg News:
U16 Boys
Our U 16s played Ardfert in Round 3 of the Tralee District league in Ballymac on Thursday last . Our Boys got off to a wonderful start and we were 3 points to the good after 10 mins . Ardfert responded with 2 points , but our boys were soon in control when 2 Sean Horan Goals put us in a great position with 7 mins left in the half .
An excellent point from James Kenny put us further ahead and it was looking good at the interval with Ballymac leading 2 04 to 3 points .
Ardfert came out in typical Ardfert fashion for the second half and scored 5 points on the trot to leave 2 points between the sides .
A beautiful point from Denis Brosnan settled us again , but when Adam Kelly struck for Goal shortly after , it was looking good once more . However Ardfert never gave up and scored a goal of their own to narrow the gap to 3 points again .
However a further point from Adam joy gave us a 4 point lead on the final score of Ballymac 3 07 Ardfert 1 09 . Adam Kelly was outstanding in defence as was Denis Brosnan & Daragh Sweeney. Cathal Culloty & Adam joy worked hard in midfield, Donal Daly maurice o connell Gary lynch & james Kenny played well up front . Mossie Brennan was in outstanding form when introduced. Thanks to Ardfert for a fine sporting Game & thanks to all parents for their support on the night .
Our u 16s played Austin Stacks in Caherslee in the Division one final on Sunday . Ballymac were first off the mark with a point from Donal Daly from a free after a foul on Maurice O’ Connell . Austin Stacks replied with 4 points on the trot and settled Quickly after the early set Back .
However Ballymac replied with two more points from frees by Donal Daly, to put a point between the sides . A fine individual effort from Austin Stacks before half time lead to a goal and this put 4 points between the sides . Another goal before half time for Austin Stacks left the half time score 2 05 to 0 04 to Austin Stacks.
In the second half with the wind Stacks added further scores to build on their lead , and when they added a third goal it seemed as if the contest was over . A consolation goal from Adam Walker and further points from Adam Joy closed the gap .
But from here on Austin Stacks added further scores to run out comfortable winners and fully deserving of their win .
All Ballymac players tried their best and can be proud of their performance and they have done the club proud all year . Winning the Castleisland District League A Final was the highlight of the year .

Organisers Suzanne and Carmel had an encouraging turnout of interested people at the 2019 Annual Camogie Review meeting on Friday. Thus was our annual end-of-season review and pre-season planning meeting.
We welcome all who helped out in 2019. We particularly wanted to see new faces who would like to volunteer for any of the jobs scoped out as part of preliminary 2020 planning. There are more jobs than ever as we begin the 2020 season: the club has 119 juvenile and 14 adult camogie players, a 37% increase since the beginning of 2019.
A number of people to potentially work in some roles were identified. However, many more volunteers are needed to cover all the 2020 activities, that we have ambitions to undertake. So please contact Suzanne and Carmel if you are able to help in any way in 2020 with coaching, officer positions etc., or if you can contribute in any other capacity to give assistance to our teams.

The event will include a panel made up of John Brassil TD; Mike Stack Solicitor; Gerry O’Shea Insurance Broker and Kieran Ruttledge of the Aquadome outlining key measures that businesses can put in place now to reduce their insurance costs.

FIANNA Fáil TD for Kerry John Brassil has written to the Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief to request emergency funding for families in Tralee whose homes have been affected by recent heavy rainfall.
More than a dozen houses in O’Connor’s Terrace in Boherbee had to tackle flooding after torrential downpours last night and this morning.
Deputy Brassil said; “Tralee has been badly impacted by last night’s heavy rainfall, with homes in Boherbee worst affected. Parts of Tonevane, Clash West, Brewery road and the main Tralee to Fenit road have also suffered substantial flood damage.

“I have written to Minister Kevin Boxer Moran to release emergency funding to Kerry County Council so that it can assist in the repair of the homes affected. Funding will also be needed for works to mitigate further flood damage into the future.
“Only last year, the government announced a €1bn plan aimed at rolling out flood relief schemes across the country. €15m of this was to be allocated to a major scheme in Tralee. Last night we witnessed the impact of government inaction on this issue, and now 13 homes have paid the price.
“I am urging Minister Moran to ensure that this promised funding is prioritised and made available without delay so that essential flood defences can be constructed. We have seen an increase in serious weather events over the past couple of years and we cannot afford to wait for another few years for these works to begin.”

PUPILS at Presentation Primary School are once again getting a chance to show their artistic side by taking part in Year 2 of the Creative Schools Initiative.
The theme is “Shape and Space”, so they decided to look at the space we occupy predominantly in our lives and what kind of shape this space is in. Teacher Helena Hennessy outlines the many aspects to this year’s programme below…
“For us here in Presentation Primary School, the ‘Shape and Space’ means our school, our homes and the environment around us. We discussed how we would incorporate this into the curriculum to make it more creative. Our main aim is to encourage the children to develop their creative skills, critical thinking skills, higher order and problem-solving skills.”

“With a S.T.E.M. focus in mind, we linked with a group called Voice. This is a group of people who are very passionate and knowledgeable about environmental issues and who spend time campaigning to have these issues resolved.
“We are zoning in on plastic and we are doing a programme in conjunction with Voice called ‘No Home for Plastic’. We have been creative in our quest to reduce plastic in school and at home.
Over the past few weeks our 3rd and 4th class children have donned their scientist hats and have been busy conducting surveys and audits in school and at home, while 6th class—our mathematicians will be analysing the results of these audits.”
“This will help us make a valid plan to actively reduce plastic in our environment. Our 6th Class girls are using discarded once off plastics and other materials to make maths equipment. In school we have already dispensed with water bottles and we had water fountains installed which we use to refill our own bottles that we bring to school each day.”

We have teamed up with Deirdre Enright and Kerry ETB to take part in Kerry LCYP, a Local Creative Youth Partnership. Every Monday afternoon, Andrew Scattergood and Donnchadha O Connor work with our fifth class to build an orchestra out of reusable plastics and other materials. The children from 3rd to 6th class will also help to design and build a garden and outdoor creative space as part of this project.”
Our Junior school from infants to second class are engaging in Drama workshops based on the theme “Save Our Planet”, with Sharon Costello, while second class are working on the same theme with Martin Schärer, creating all kinds of wonderful percussion sounds.
“We hope to tackle marine issues with Martha Farrell from Tralee I.T. and Climate Change with Caitriona Fallon of Siamsa Tíre. Our Third Class will engage in a Beach Clean up while our other fifth class will use our discarded plastic bottles and bottle caps to create a mosaic with a sea theme. This will be permanently displayed in the school.
One of the key elements lf our project this year is Tralee Town Park. We decided to look at the Town Park as we are very close to it and we use the park for walks, nature trails, picnics, play and many other events.
We did some research and discovered that the Save the Green Committee have been very proactive for the past 50 years in maintaining the beauty of the park. We were saddened and disappointed when we discovered that our beautiful park had received some negative media attention recently, due to a backlog of work that needed to be carried out.
We began thinking about how we could help make a difference and help “save our park”. We saw a competition in the school entitled “Save Our Green”. They thought about how they might make a difference regarding the upkeep of the park and they had to express this in any creative form they chose.
They painted pictures, made posters, composed songs, poems, drama and dance. We asked Tommy Collins and his committee if they would mind coming to the school to judge the competition, which they did.
They spoke to the children about the history of the park and the various initiatives they undertook to ensure it remained a place of beauty and serenity over the past 50 years. They showed us pictures and presented the winners with their prizes.
This was a great honour for us and form now on, Presentation Primary School will be involved in the upkeep of the park. Every month one class will be seen in a different section of the park with their bags and gloves, donated to us by Kerry County Council, picking up discarded litter and plastic. We are very excited about this and honoured to do something proactive for our beautiful town park.
On the 24th October we have a fashion show fundraiser in the Rose Hotel. Our fourth class girls have been busy creating junk couture from a variety of reusable materials which they will model on the night.
We have children and teachers from Junior Infants to sixth class modelling and entertaining on the night. Everybody is very excited and preparations are well under way. We would like to thank our Parents Association. for all their hard work in helping to organise this event.”
