AXA Roadsafe Roadshow

Driving a car in real life is not a computer game where you get a chance to reload

The AXA Roadsafe Roadshow in partnership with An Garda Siochana delivered a hard-hitting road safety message to over 1200 Transition Year students in County Kerry.

AXA are delighted to be working together with An Garda Siochana and local emergency services to bring the AXA Roadsafe Roadshow to County Kerry. This is the fourth AXA Roadsafe Roadshow of the Autumn schedule and we will be visiting Cork on the 21st and 22nd of January next year.
The AXA Roadsafe Roadshow is aimed primarily at Transition Year students in Secondary Schools and is based on an award-winning format and depicts graphically how a night out, can end in tragedy. The show depicts what happens with driver inexperience and overconfidence with the aim to educate and highlight the various safety skills these young students need before they get behind the wheel of a car.

Using a backdrop of contemporary music, video clips and television advertisements; the story was told by Garda Peter McCarthy, Paramedic Eugene Tangney, Fire Officer Dan Keane and A&E Consultant Martin Boyd. The show culminated in a presentation by a local Mother Ann Tydings from Lisselton, who lost her son Padraig 15 years ago in a car accident after his 22nd Birthday.

Inspector Tony Sugrue, An Garda Siochana commented “The overall trend in Kerry has shown improvement in the last 15 years in terms of enforcement, engineering and education. The continuing disturbing trend in drunk driving is the biggest source of concern, as the increased detection rates are primarily driven by those in the 20-40-year old category. An Garda Siochana in the Kerry division are actively looking at ways to engage with young people and events such as the AXA Roadsafe Roadshow play a significant part in targeting this age group.”

Antoinette McDonald, Direct, Partner and Customer Experience Director at AXA Insurance commented: "As one of the largest insurance companies in Ireland, we deal with hundreds of claims every week as a result of traffic collisions. The effects are well documented - too many people are being killed on our roads or are being injured for life. Young people are particularly over-represented, and we want to educate these young people to be safe and responsible drivers of the future.

This event tells the real life stories of people who deal with the needless carnage caused by speed, drink and drugs on Irish roads and the show brings home the pain caused by unnecessary road crashes and the impact on people and how it has changed their lives forever. The aim of the event is to educate novice and young drivers to think twice about the seriousness of safety when learning to drive. We know that when these students start driving it will give them a new sense of freedom and we want to make sure they enjoy this new freedom but at the same time educate them on the responsibilities that go with it.”

In 2018, 143 people lost their lives on our roads. Over half of fatalities have been either a driver or passenger and one third of all collisions had excessive speed as a factor.

One third of all driver and passenger fatalities were not wearing a seatbelt at time of collision.
In 2018 in the County Kerry, 3 lives were lost, and 61 people were seriously injured. This year in 2019 we have unfortunately lost eight lives and 32 people have been seriously injured to date on our roads.

This year, 131 people have lost their lives on our roads to date and unfortunately this is an increase of 7 fatalities for this time last year every road death is one too many.

Notes to Editors:
This is a show where real life tragedies played out on stage and has been specifically designed to educate young people on the very serious issue of road safety.
Young people attending the event were given the opportunity to listen to the personal experiences of representatives of our emergency services which included a Garda, a Fireman, a Paramedic, an A&E Consultant and a parent who has lost a loved one following a road crash. The event, will make the young people attending, stop and think about the seriousness of safety when driving on the road so they will become responsible drivers in the future.
