Greenway Projects To Be Named ‘Kingdom Of Kerry Greenways’

THE new greenway projects in County Kerry will be known and branded as the ‘Kingdom of Kerry Greenways.’

At a meeting of Kerry County Council today, councillors were presented with naming options and brand concepts for the two greenway projects which are due to open this summer.

The Tralee-Fenit and Listowel-Abbeyfeale greenways will be open to the public in the coming months.

The decision on the name of the greenways follows a stakeholder survey in relation to the two north Kerry projects which was undertaken by Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland and local community and business representatives.

.

The survey highlighted the importance of greenways as amenities for the local community as well as their role in attracting visitors to the county.

Groups and individuals along both routes were surveyed to inform the creative process and to aid the development of distinctive branding and marketing by Zinc Design Consultants.

“The naming process was undertaken in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland. The aim of the process was to select a name for the Kerry Greenways that is distinctive, appealing, and attractive to a local, domestic and international audience,” said Niamh O’Sullivan, Head of Kerry County Council’s Tourism Unit.

“This process resulted in a wide variety of names being suggested with two names being shortlisted for consideration. The name will act as an overarching or collective name for new greenways and will apply to other greenway projects in Kerry in the coming years,” she said.

Following today’s meeting, the consultants will further refine the branding and design concepts in advance of the opening of the Tralee-Fenit and Listowel-Abbeyfeale greenways over the summer.

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney welcomed the decision: “It is really exciting to see the design and branding concepts for the greenways coming to fruition. This is an important part of the process.

“Choosing an overarching name such as ‘Kingdom of Kerry Greenway’ allows us to seamlessly integrate future greenways into the marketing and branding of all greenways in Kerry.

“I want to thank all of the stakeholders who engaged with the consultation phase and I look forward to seeing the final brand being produced very soon,” he said.

PHOTOS: ‘Matilda The Musical’ Works Its Magic On Siamsa Audiences

FIVE fantastic performances were enjoyed by audiences in Siamsa Tíre over the past few days, as the Bryan Carr School of Performing Arts brought ‘Matilda The Musical Jr.’ to the stage.

Based on the Roald Dahl novel, the musical adaptation ran from Wednesday to Friday featuring about 120 children who saw their hard work pay off in spades with wonderful performances all round.

“We had five performances and they were pretty much all sold out which was fantastic. It’s testament to the fact that live theatre is back,” said Bryan Carr.

.

“I think the last time they had a sold-out show here — at full capacity — it was pre-COVID.  I want to thank Siamsa for promoting and supporting the arts in the county and the people of Tralee too. People involved in the arts have been really under the cosh over the past two years, so it’s great to see people putting bums on seats,” he added.

Bryan had special praise for the children who put in such hard work to make the show so special.

“I don’t know where they find the energy. They just shone over the past few nights and the work they have put in paid off when they come out to a full house. It means an awful lot to them, they’re buzzing,” said Bryan. Scroll down for photos…

Denny’s The ‘Last Man Standing’ In Kerins O’Rahillys Successful Fundraiser

.

NOT bad for a first effort.

The Kerins O’Rahillys club decided to run a ‘Last Man Standing’ competition this year, but unlike other clubs who run the fundraiser based on the Premier League, this one asked people to make selections based on the Allianz National League Division 1 season.

“The club wanted to upgrade the gym facilities here for the players to do their strength and conditioning training,” said John O’Connor, one of the organisers of the competition.

“The players really bought into the idea of the competition and each of them got a number of tickets to sell. They were also on sale in the club and online,” he added.

Continued below…

.

The response was amazing with over 700 people paying the €10 entry fee, many of whom with no association to the Strand Road club.

Many of those entrants didn’t last too long as about one-third of the participants were eliminated after the opening game in the league when Dublin lost to Armagh. When Kerry drew the following day with Kildare, a good few more bit the dust.

Going into the second last week there were only 20 ‘men’ standing and just nine in the final round. Three entrants made it all the way but Denny O’Connor from Mounthawk ended up with the most points to claim the €500 prize.

Denny, a former Chairman of the Juvenile Club, was at the clubhouse to accept his prize on Friday night.

With the level of success of the competition, it’s no surprise that it’ll return next season and it’ll be a bigger and better affair say organisers.

Know Your Rights: Tenants Rights Issues

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Question: My private rented accommodation is damp and mouldy. Does the landlord have to fix this?

Answer: Yes, your landlord has a legal duty to make sure that your home meets certain minimum physical standards. This includes keeping it in a proper state of structural repair and free from damp.

Does my landlord have to provide a washing machine?

Yes, your landlord must provide you with access to a washing machine, and a clothes-dryer if your home does not have a private garden or yard.

Some of the other things they must provide include:

Continued below…

.

• A 4-ring hob with oven and grill
• A cooker hood or extractor fan
• A microwave oven
• A sink with hot and cold water
• A well ventilated bathroom which is in a separate room from the living quarters
• A fixed heating appliance in each room which you can control
• Vermin-proof rubbish storage facilities

Is my landlord responsible if my possessions are damaged because of an issue with the property, for example, if the pipes burst?

While the landlord is responsible for keeping the building in good repair they are not generally responsible for any damage to your possessions. Several insurance companies provide contents insurance for private tenants.

What should I do if my house does not meet the minimum standards?

First speak to your landlord about the problem. Put your complaint in writing and include as many details as possible, including photographs, videos and any receipts for repairs you did at your own expense. If your landlord refuses to carry out the necessary repairs, you should report them to your local authority.

Finnegan On Films: Baseball, The Bard And Grisly Murders On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, has the pick of the movies on RTE and TG4 this weekend…

Showing a sporting themed film in a weekend full of sport is brave, but A League of Their Own (Saturday 2.20pm RTE2) is one of the best of the genre.

Directed by Penny Marshall, it is a fictionalised telling of the actual All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, founded during the Second World War as the men were away fighting.

Dottie Hinson (Geena Davies) is a farm worker whose husband is away, who loves playing baseball, as does her competitive younger sister Kit (Lori Petty).

Continued below…

.

The Peaches is managed by former player with a deep thirst problem Jimmy Duggan, played by Tom Hanks who puts in a typical Tom Hanks performance.

Told in flashback fashion, this is a film that even non baseball fans can enjoy.

A film that starts with a pun on the name is a good start in my book.  Sherlock Gnomes (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is a sequel to Gnomeo and Juliet who recruit the ace detective to investigate the disappearance of the garden gnomes from London.

With a fantastic vocal cast including Johnny Depp (Sherlock), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Watson), Gnomeo (James McAvoy), Emily Blunt (Juliet) and Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters and Ozzy Ozbourne as the purloined garden ornaments, this is not the greatest script, but it does have the wacky visual comedy so beloved by children (and childish adults like me).

Continued below…

.

Following on the Bard theme is Shakespeare in Love (Saturday 9.20pm TG4) perhaps best remembered for Gwyneth Paltrow’s somewhat teary Oscar acceptance speech, which is a shame as there is a lot to enjoy in this film.

William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) has writers block and is in desperate need of inspiration.  His latest Opus, Romeo and Ethel the Pirates Daughter, is not quiet coming together.

He meets a theatre loving noblewoman Viola (the aforementioned Ms Paltrow) and the pair are smitten with each other, which is unfortunate as her hand in marriage has been bought by the arrogant Lord Wessex (Colin Firth).

Various theatre companies are competing for Shakespeare’s new play, each with a company of pompous luvvies, looking for their percentage and a plum role.  Even the Thames boat taxi has a script in process.

There are lovely references to other Shakespeare plays and famous lines in a hilarious and Academy Award-winning script by Tom Stoppard.

The cast includes Geoffrey Rush, Ben Affleck, Judi Dench (another Academy Award Winner for Best Supporting Actress as Elizabeth I) and the cream of British Stage and Screen talent all enjoying themselves royally.

There are books that seem unfilmable.  One such is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Saturday 11.30pm RTE2) yet this is a masterpiece of a film.  It is however, dark, dark, dark – so be warned.

Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) is a mentally unstable Perfumer in 18th Century Paris who embarks on a murder spree to preserve the scent of his victims to create a unique perfume. Also Starring Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman this is directed by Tom Tykwer. Enjoy and stay safe.

“We are delighted to support this key event which will cover important information for all employers and are looking forward to working more with Tralee Chamber Alliance in the coming months,” said Stephen Stack Branch Manager of AIB Tralee.

Reliving The Dance Music Heyday Of Horan’s At ‘Retrospective’

.

MEMORIES of some amazing nights in Horan’s will come flooding back to people attending a club night on Easter Saturday, featuring some familiar DJs that graced the decks there over the past 30 years.

‘Retrospective’ will take place at The Klub at Kerins O’Rahillys Clubhouse with two function rooms hosting sets from DJ Eibhlin, Jonno Brien, D.O.R, Paudi Cronin, Steven Horan and Gary Fitz.

Jonno Brien and Paudi Cronin told TraleeToday.ie that the event will offer something refreshing for people starved of proper dance music, as the club music scene which thrived during the 90s and noughties in town has fizzled out over the years.

‘Retrospective’ is aimed at people who enjoyed the dance music played at Horan’s over the years so it’s billed as night for the ‘Over 28s’ and tickets are already selling very well. With a capacity of around 400, they expect to sell out well before Saturday week.

Continued below…

.

Paudi began DJing in Horan back in 1990 in Club Milk (the old ‘Ritzy’s) before going on to create the legendary Fresh N Funky night in the early 90s — playing an eclectic mix of dance, soul, hiphop and a bit of indie thrown in — and later ‘Transmission’.

Jonno Brien is also a veteran of the Horan’s scene and started spinning the discs there in 1995, going on to create a name for himself on the national dance DJ circuit.

Both Jonno and Paudi said it was a golden time for dance music at Horan’s when they attracted some of Europe’s top DJs with some even visiting from Detroit and San Francisco.

Jonno and the renowned DJ Eibhlin of Hedkandi will have revellers filling the floor with 90s and 00s house anthems, while downstairs Paudi, Steven and Gary will be playing a mixture of old and new soul, funk, disco and house records with a more laidback feel.

It’s guaranteed to be one of the best nights of the year for dance music aficionados so you better book the babysitter and get hold of those tickets, available on eventbrite by clicking here.

REPORT: Tipperary Too Strong In The End For Kerry

.
.

Mike O’Halloran on the Munster U20 Hurling Championship game between Kerry and Tipperary in Tralee last night…

Kerry 0-13

Tipperary 3-15

Ed Connolly had Tipp’s first point followed by a fine point from Felim O’Sullivan. Paddy Creedon put Tipp back in front, but Kerry had the next six points three each from Ronan Walsh and Nathan Guerin.

Nathan Guerin had also brought a great save from the Tipp keeper Jason O’Dwyer. It looked like there might have been an upset on the cards, but Tipperary eased their way into the game with points from Peter McGarry and Paddy Creedon.

In between those points Keltyn Molloy brought off a stunning save in the Kerry goals. Ronan Walsh added two pointed frees, Tipp had a point by Eddy Ryan.

Continued below…

.

With 27 minutes on the clock, Ed Connolly burst through for a goal for Tipperary, Shane Gleeson put two points on the board.

Kerry, playing with a gale force wind, went in at halftime one point down, 0-9 points to 1-07.

Shane had the first point of the second half, Kieran O’Carroll replied for Kerry, Tipp presented themselves with a goal chance but struck the crossbar. Gleeson and Jack Sheehan swapped points.

Kerry lost Ronan Walsh to an injury on forty minutes and he was replaced by Dylan Moriarty. Nathan Guerin slotted a free.

It was all Tipperary from then on. Peter McGarry pointed before Paddy Creedon struck the net (a goal that the Kerry management were not happy with). The score then was Tipperary 2-10 to 0-12 with 48 minutes gone.

Kerry then lost Darragh Slattery, Tipp rattled off four more points before their third goal arrived from Peter McGarry.

Dylan Moriarty pointed a very difficult free towards the end but Sean Kenneally had the final score a point for Tipp.

Much like last night, Kerry did not match the physicality of Tipp. At times, Kerry had more men around the ball than Tipperary, but still a Tipp man came away with the ball.

The Tipperary first touch was much sharper than Kerry and Kerry were unable to win any primary possession with their hands.
