Toucan Crossing To Be Introduced At Bracker O’Regan Road

.
Plans for the Toucan Crossing on the Bracker O’Regan road.

A TOUCAN crossing is to be introduced on Bracker O’Regan as a link between the ‘Skinny Mile’ section and the other side of the Tralee-Fenit greenway at Mounthawk.

A Toucan crossing (two‐can‐cross) is a signalised crossing facility shared by cyclists and pedestrians and appropriate where a cycleway / greenway crosses a public road.

Councillors agreed to approve the crossing at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Tuesday.

It will be a signalised crossing, four metres wide and have associated road markings. Nine observations/representations regarding the plan were made during the public consultation process.

THE ROCK ALL-STARS: The Rock All-Stars stepped out in force again on Sunday morning last…a little rain couldn’t dampen the high spirits shown by all. With the various stations set up and in place, everyone joined in to do an enthusiastic warm-up. Tim Mc was teaching ball skills….bouncing, throwing in the air and catching, skills at which Fionn, Aislinn and Lily were mighty.

Penalty kicks were then taken….Millie and Thomas were amazingly skilful. Lily and Caoimhe were dingers at the obstacle course….going through the tunnel, jumping through hoops and zigzagging as if they were on the slopes of the Austrian Alps. Jamie and Julian loved the parachute with the gorgeous colours flying high in the sky. It was wonderful to see old faces and new….all enjoying the experiences….lifetime friendships being forged at the grass roots.

Please join us again on Sunday morning next at 10am at the Austin Stack Club pitch in Connolly Park. The All-Stars initiative is open to all children, boys and girls, with a diagnosis. SCÉAL NA FÉILE (FAOI 15): Our boys took on the best U15 club sides in the world last Saturday when we participated in Féile na nÓg 2022 in Dublin. We took our place in Division 1 expecting to qualify for the knockout cup stages against the premier clubs. We were hosted by St.Peters in Ballyboughal, in North County Dublin.

We travelled there from Maynooth University Campus where we had stayed overnight in order to give our side the best possible chance of success. In our opening game we played our hosts, Club Naomh Peadar. We started slowly in that game but managed to get two crucial goals to settle our nerves and we were ahead at half time…2-3 to 0-3. We got into our stride in the second half, scoring three more goals to secure an emphatic victory with a scoreline of 5-7 to 0-7.

Our second match was against New York and it was played almost immediately after our opener. The Big Apple boys proved worthy opponents scoring 0-4 in the first half against our 1-2. With a much better second half performance we stretched our lead and a stonewall shut out by our backs prevented New York from adding to their tally. We won on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-4, thereby securing a semi-final placing.

After a well-deserved lunch break, during which our boys had an opportunity to replenish their energy as well as soaking up the carnival atmosphere, we challenged a staunch Bredagh team from the outskirts of Belfast and the champions of County Down. A strong start had us leading by 0-5 at half time….2-1 to 0-2….and a further two goals in the second half ensured that we were worthy victors….4-3 to 0-4.

The highlight of that encounter was a brilliant team movement that ended when Gavin Casey found an alert Cormac Bastible with surgical precision and Cormac, producing a sublime finish, despatched a raspar to the Northern net. We then travelled to Abbotstown to play our Division 1 Cup Final against Galway champions, Claregalway, who also had an unbeaten run to the Division 1 Cup final. We began the first half well with the lion’s share of possession and were leading by a mere two points close to half time when a speculative shot from our opponents led to a fortuitous goal that, unfortunately, left us down by a point at half-time.

We had our own goal chance immediately after half-time but a great save by the opposition’s goalie kept out the leather. Claregalway then had their own attack on our goal which was well blocked by our defence but the rebound fell into opposition hands and was finished to the net from point blank range. Tireless efforts from our hardworking midfielders and forwards produced a comeback but, unfortunately, our train was derailed by another deflected Claregalway goal.

We managed to bring the margin back to five points but ran out of time and lost on a final scoreline of 3-2 to 0-6. Sad? Yes, but very happy with our overall displays at Féile 2022! Our U15s played their games with heart, spirit, courage and skill. They showed to all that the boys of The Rock are among the best! They gave every ounce of their energy in that final game in Abbotstown.

They had a wonderful weekend and the experience will certainly stand to them. We look forward to seeing these lads wearing the Black‘n’Amber in future games.

Congratulations to worthy winners, Baile Chláir na Gaillimhe.

Tralee Boxing Club News

.

School tours over, thank you teacher cards sent, another school year is finished and kids all over Tralee are experiencing their first weeks of freedom as the summer holidays are off with a bang.

It’s been a year full of changes for our smallest members, and we at Tralee Boxing Club are rewarding all their hard work and enthusiasm with a well earned break from training.

Little Champs boxing class (age 7-11) and Junior Boxers class (age 12-17) have now finished up until the start of September.

Enjoy the break boxers, get outside in the fine weather, keep active and remember to drink plenty of water.

We will see all our young warriors back in the gym, renewed, refreshed and ready to roll with the punches again in the autumn.

Tralee Boxing Club Summer Camp will run for two weeks this July. Camp is open to all children aged 7-13, regardless of fitness levels or boxing experience.

We introduce the basic fundamental skills of boxing, the emphasis being on fun and learning, with plenty of arts and craft activities to keep it exciting.

We will add a mix of physical activities to improve fitness, games, rounds on punch bags and on pads in the ring with qualified, garda vetted coaches.

Tralee Boxing Club Summer Camp has something for everyone, a chance for boys and girls to develop their confidence, improve fitness and strength, and to express themselves as part of a group in a positive, encouraging environment, with leaders dedicated to the ideals of respect, and inclusion.  More details below.

.

Adult Class will continue for the summer months, on Mondays and Wednesdays, but at the earlier time of 6:30-7:45.

Everyone welcome regardless of age, fitness and experience levels. This is primarily a non-contact session, where the only requirement is a willingness to do your best.

We would like to extend our gratitude to local, community hero sponsors Lidl Stores, Castlemaine Road, Tralee who kindly allowed us to hold a flag day outside the store on Thursday and Friday last week to promote our Summer Camp.

We would also like to thank everyone who came along to find out more about the camp, to support our local, voluntary, community based club and the future stars of Irish boxing.

“ You don’t lose if you get knocked down; you lose if you stay down.” Muhammad Ali.

Daly Calls On Minister To Explore Expansion Opportunities For Kerry Airport

.
Kerry Airport

THE Sinn Féin TD for Kerry has called on Minister Eamon Ryan to explore expansion opportunities for Kerry Airport.

Deputy Pa Daly made the call after the airport facilitated the landing of three transatlantic flights, originally planned for Dublin Airport, at the weekend.

“The airport turned a profit for 2021, returning an after-tax surplus of €2.5m.  This is testament to the skill and commitment of the staff and management team there,” he said.

Continued below…

.

“I know that many visitors to Kerry have been frustrated with the problems Dublin Airport is experiencing, and it has cast a negative light on their trip to Ireland.  They see the airport in Farranfore and wonder why they couldn’t fly here directly.

“The news on Monday morning that Kerry Airport was able to cater to three transatlantic flights, originally planned for Dublin Airport, demonstrates that the airport is more than capable of handling additional routes.

“Throughout the pandemic, John Mulhern and his team at Kerry Airport kept the airport operating as smoothly as possible and customers could benefit from a less stressful travelling experience than Dublin Airport,” added Deputy Daly.

New Tralee Skate Park To Be Named After Bruce Kelliher

.
Bruce Kelliher.

THE new skate park in Tralee is to be named after a much-loved local man who passed away earlier this year.

Bruce Kelliher, originally from Ard na Lí in Oakpark, was just 48 when died suddenly on January 31 in Co Galway, where he was living with his family.

The new park located adjacent to Tralee Sports Complex will be known as ‘Ox Park’ — Ox being a nickname attributed to Bruce by friends — after the naming was approved by councillors at the Tralee Municipal District meeting on Tuesday.

Continued below…

.

The local skate park committee wanted to name the park after a local legend of the sport and decided to honour Bruce who was synonymous with both skateboarding and basketball in the town.

Justin McCarthy of the group commented: “Bruce grew up in Ard na Lí, a short distance from the Sports Complex. It seems fitting that the park would be dedicated in his name, not only for his efforts and input to the project throughout the years but as a gesture of gratitude from the local and national Irish skateboarding community”.

Bruce’s brother Graham,  on behalf of the family, said: “If the youngsters of Tralee and Kerry can enjoy the skatepark half as much as Bruce enjoyed his life then we would be privileged to have it named in his honour. OX Park is a fitting tribute”.

The new skate park is nearing completion.

Councillors unanimously agreed that it would be a fitting tribute to the Tralee man.

Councillors also heard that construction of the skate park had been delayed due to COVID restrictions, but is now nearing completion subject to fencing and landscaping work and will be open in a number of weeks.

The park, which cost over €200,000, was internationally designed and is a collaboration between Kerry County Council, Tralee Sports Complex and Tralee Skateboard Community Group.

Funding was from local, Leader and Sports Capital Grant sources.
