Fundraising Walk In Keel To Remember Damien

.

THE people of Keel and the wider community are set to remember the late Damien Foley with a memorial walk on Sunday, July 10.

Beginning at Keel GAA grounds at 10am, Damien‘s family, friends and neighbours will walk the Keel Loop Walk to mark what would have been the occasion of his 40th birthday.

Damien passed away from cystic fibrosis in July 1999 just a few days before his 17th birthday. Damien was a much loved member of the community of Keel and was an avid sports fan, with the Kerry team and Aston Villa being his particular favourites.

Continued below…

.

Damien attended Castledrum National School and Presentation Secondary School, Milltown, and is fondly remembered by his former school mates as a popular, funny and caring friend.

Damien was also a much valued member of Keel underage football teams, with whom he wore the white jersey with immense pride.

Damien’s family and friends are asking people to come out and walk all, or even part of, the route with them on Sunday the 10th.

The walk will begin at 10am sharp, leaving Keel GAA and heading west along the R561 to Whitegate Crossroads, before turning south to Lachtacalla Quay, following the bank of the River Maine to Boolteens, then to the hill via Lassabee and back to Keel GAA via Gortanedin.

In all, the route measures approximately 13km and is easy to moderate in difficulty. People are advised to wear trail shoes or walking boots and dogs are not permitted.

Refreshments will be served before and after the walk at Keel GAA and it is expected that the event will have concluded well in time for people to go and watch Kerry take on Dublin on television later that afternoon.

All proceeds raised by the memorial walk for Damien will be shared between the Cystic Fibrosis Ward at University Hospital Limerick, Irish Community Air Ambulance and Keel GAA Club.

Contributions are purely voluntary and can be made on the day, in collection buckets in local businesses or online through the following GoFundMe link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/he-damien-foley-40th-birthday-memorial-walk?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet

A MOVIE filmed in Tralee and around Kerry last summer will have its premiere next week in Galway.

‘Joyride’, starring Oscar-winning actor Olivia Colman, will premiere as the opening film at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh on Tuesday July 5, before going on general release on July 29.

Written by Kerry-based screenwriter, Ailbhe Keogan, helmed by Emmy award-winning director, Emer Reynolds, and produced by Subotica, this road movie was shot over the course of five weeks throughout Tralee and the wider county.

Local crew were also employed, among them Kerry based Location Manager, Karl King, who led the locations department and Tralee woman, Orla Finucane, who worked as script supervisor.

Local acting talent features in the film with both Elaine Kennedy and Tim Landers landing named parts while Aisling O’Sullivan, originally from Kerry, has a key role.

Director Emer Reynolds described Kerry as “bringing an ineffable magic to the film” and emphasised that “it couldn’t have happened in Kerry without the work of the Film Development Officer, Siobhan O’Sullivan, and critical organisations in the county that supported its production, namely Kerry College Monavalley Campus, Kerry ETB and Kerry County Council.”

Olivia Colman (Joy) and Charlie Reid (Mully) in Joyride which goes on general release later this month.

Kerry College Monavalley Campus opened its doors to enable the production team set up a production base at the College.

Owen O’Donnell, Kerry ETB Dir of FET (Further Education & Training) and Con O’Sullivan, Campus Manager, recognised the excellent training opportunity this would afford Kerry College learners.

“Learners on our Broadcast Production Courses had a unique opportunity to work with an incredible cast and production team,” said Con. “This opportunity has ultimately culminated with each learner getting a credit to their name, an invaluable outcome  for those seeking to establish a career in the industry.”

Brian Nolan, lead instructor on the Broadcast Production Skills Course was delighted to see his trainees do so well on Joyride.

“Real world productions are an essential cog in the training wheel,” said Brian. “The students put in the hours practising industry skill. Putting these skills to work in a real world environment is where you fully cement the learning.”

All the students on the course gained experience throughout the Prod Office, Sound, Camera, Locations and AD (Assistant Director) Depts and gained an overview of the film production process.

Alongside crew and talent, many local services were hired, including much accommodation, while a number of local people got to take part as extras during filming.

Nurses And Midwives In Kerry Express Discontent At Delay In Pandemic Recognition Payment

.

NURSES and midwives working in University Hospital Kerry and West Kerry Community hospital have expressed their discontent with the delay in payment of the Pandemic Recognition Payment.

This comes as their employer, the South/South West Hospital Group and Cork Kerry Community Healthcare have delayed the payment date for the Pandemic Recognition Payment from June 30 to July 14.

The INMO have sought clarity for payment date from employers. INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Liam Conway said: “Nurses and midwives in University Hospital Kerry and West Kerry Community hospital feel extremely let down by their employers who have made a last minute decision to delay paying the Pandemic Recognition Payment until the middle of July.

Continued below…

.

“It is unacceptable to this trade union that both employers have continuously delayed on this long-awaited payment to our members who stepped up in the middle of a global pandemic that was and continues to be full of unknowns.

“The hospital group informed staff that they expected the Pandemic Recognition Payment to be paid on the 30th of June. Many nurses and midwives calculated this expected payment into their budgets. For this payment to be delayed now is completely unacceptable.

“Hospitals have known exactly how this payment would have to be made since April, it is not good enough to continue to delay,” said Mr Conway.

“I have asked Minister Donnelly on a number of occasions when the Covid Recognition Payment will be made, and in particular, when it will be made in Kerry.  I receive a different answer every time.

Kerry Sinn Fein TD, Pa Daly, has criticised Minister Donnelly for not ensuring that there is complete clarity on when the Covid Recognition Payment will be made.

“Workers in UHK have been let down again with no payment made this week despite that date being committed.  Many of these workers are reliant on the payment to fill oil tanks, purchase school books and pay for school transportation or uniforms,” he said.

“It has become less of a bonus and more of a buffer to pay for essentials. The very least the Minister could do, is to confirm when the payment will be made in Kerry and honour that commitment.”

Mary Lucey: Vital Information For Students As CAO Deadline Approaches

.

By Mary Lucey – Founder of Career Ahead

The information below is based on feedback from students who made incorrect CAO course choices resulting in them dropping out of their college course.

Follow Genuine Interests.

Students should not base course choices on anticipated exams results.  They should base them on what they love to do.

It sounds remarkably simple, but if a student selects a course based on a subject/topic/hobby they love, ie History, Music, Football, Art, Social Media, Maths etc, this means, in college, they will really engage with the course material and find it very stimulating.

They will be eager to get involved in course related extracurricular activities and networking events, which play an enormous part in progressing to employment/further studies when college is over.

Continued below…

.

Do not confuse loving a subject in school with loving the teacher!

Sometimes, in Secondary School, a student is assigned a very engaging teacher for a particular subject.

The teacher ensures classes are interesting, stimulating, and positive. At times, a student selects a CAO course based on this positive association with the teacher, rather than their genuine interest in the subject area.

Look beyond a course title.

College course titles can be misleading.  Do not assume it will do as it says on the tin.  At times, colleges use course titles that sound attractive to students, so it is vital to delve into the focus and content of the course to ensure it will be suitable.

• When a student has picked a course, look at all course details.

At this stage, research is vital to ensure as much information and insight as possible is gathered about courses – both positive and negative.

Go through each module for each semester, and each year.  Check out if there is a work placement element. Check out if students can study abroad.  Feel free to contact colleges with queries.

20 CAO choices.

There are 10 level 8 CAO choices and 10 Level 6/7 choices – as many as possible should be completed to cover every eventuality.

While a student will have preferred options; nobody can the future; so, a plan B, C, D strategy should be incorporated when finalising the CAO application form. However, students should not list any course that they would not be happy and willing to accept if offered.

• Level 6/7 Options.

Students often only concentrate on completing the level 8 honours degree course choice options, yet by doing so they are not maximising their options.

It is important to realise a level 7 ordinary degree can lead to a level 8 honours degree, with lower CAO entry points.

• Do not allow others to influence course choices;

Friends, family, etc, they may have the best of intentions, but the student needs to take responsibility and research and select the course they want to study.

Do not select a course because of anticipated status/salary levels.

Students should not select courses because of anticipated status and/or salary levels. Nothing makes a student more miserable then being on a course they do not like and in a lot of cases, when they qualify, they retrain or move into another career they are passionate about.

• Students should look at all college options

An honours degree is a level 8 degree, whether obtained from a University or Technological University (Institute of Technology).

At times, students base their decisions on the perceived status of a college rather than the suitability of a course. Students should also consider the array of apprenticeships available that equate to a level 7 or level 8 degree.

• Do not allow a university or college location to determine course choice.

Some students want to go to Limerick, for example, so select a range of unrelated courses in Limerick colleges rather than related courses across several colleges.

Will the student be employable?

On completion of the course, the student needs to consider whether they will be employable, or will further studies be required?

This is highly relevant when budgeting for college courses. Will four years turn in to six years to enable the student to secure a paid position.

What is the budget?

Students need to be realistic when making their choices and tailor their course location to suit their own and their family’s budget.  In addition to college fees, accommodation, travel, food, etc must all be considered. If students are working part-time to support themselves, location of college may be highly relevant to ensure they can continue in their work position.

• Include a local college/technological University or IOT in your choices at some level.

Some students cannot settle away from home and it may be possible to negotiate a change of course (if a student has sufficient points) to a local college after the first semester or the first year for example if listed on the CAO form.  Please note, this is completely based on individual college’s policies and procedures.

• Cannot decide on a course?

Students should not select a generic course for the sake of going to college.  They should look at the wonderful options in FET (PLC), Apprenticeships or work for a year until they are in a better position to make decisions. When the student is ready to progress to a third level college – they can then do so.

Daly Says Kerry People Can’t Wait Until October For Solutions To Cost Of Living Crisis

.
Deputy Pa Daly.

THE Sinn Féin TD for Kerry says his constituents need assistance now to deal with the rising cost of living and can’t wait for the budget in October.

Pa Daly was speaking about his party’s motion calling for an emergency budget to help workers and families deal with the cost of living crisis.

“I am inundated with calls and emails from people who are struggling majorly,” said Deputy Daly. “In many cases, work does not pay for them as they cannot afford the petrol to drive there.”

Continued below…

.

“With schools on going on holidays now, they are already living in fear of September, when costs for back to school will drive them to the brink. Keeping the light and heat on in the winter months is also a concern already. It is clear that people in Kerry cannot wait until October, or 2023, for solutions to be provided.”

“Michael Martin and Leo Varadkar are divided and chaotic on the matter, openly contradicting each other. Sinn Féin’s message by contrast is clear: We need targeted measures and an emergency budget now.”

“In government, we would raise the minimum wage, reduce childcare costs and introduce a tax credit for renters. Action is required, and the government needs to step up to the plate,” he concluded.

Two Music Acts To Play In Old Chapel At Moyderwell Tonight

.
Mama’s Broke and Rufous Nightjar perform tonight (Wednesday) in the old chapel in Moyderwell.

TONIGHT will see vocal harmony trio Rufous Nightjar and Canadian duo Mama’s Broke play in Tralee as part of their national tour.

The venue for this show is the old convent chapel (Tobar Naofa), Moyderwell, and this event from nonfaction is supported by Kerry County Council through their Arts Act Grant and Community Support Fund.

Rufous Nightjar is a three-part harmony trio consisting of Branwen Kavanagh, Anna Mieke and Zoe Basha. The friendship came alive in a golden wave of underground traditional and folk music in Dublin.

Continued below…

.

In the summer of 2018, their shared interest in traditional singing led the three to travel across Eastern Europe learning folk songs.

During this trip they developed an intricate and harmonious dynamic which has led them to working together on a collaborative project.

Having spent the lockdown composing a number of a cappella songs around the themes of mythology, folklore, landscape, loss and the otherworld, Branwen invited Anna-Mieke and Zoé to collaborate on arranging the songs for an upcoming album for three voices.

After a two months of development residencies in Ireland; County Clare, Killyon Manor (Meath) and Killruddery House (Wicklow) in 2021, they recorded an album together, to be released in 2022.

Mama’s Broke is a powerful folk duo and although highly influenced by their Canadian roots, Lisa and Amy are based out of nowhere and everywhere.

Their two strong voices blend to create haunting harmonies, while they artfully juggle fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin, and incorporate traditional dance and foot percussion into their performance.

Drawing from old-time, Quebecois, blues, punk, Celtic, Balkan, and doom metal, they create a soundscape that is both familiar and new.

UNIVERSITY Hospital Kerry has taken the decision to revise visiting arrangements at the hospital due to the rising number of COVID patients.

A statement released by the hospital states that UHK had re-instated visiting arrangements on a safe and structured basis, in recognition of the importance of visiting for patients and their families, but this now has to change.

“Unfortunately, the County of Kerry is now experiencing a very high incidence of COVID 19,” reads the statement. “The 14 day incidence for Kerry is currently trending at 430.6. The consequence of this high incidence rate is that UHK has a significantly increased number of COVID 19 inpatients at the hospital along with a high level of emergency presentations.

Sponsored: Kerry Students Reminded Of Apprenticeships, Traineeships And PLC Courses

.

AS the CAO change-of-mind deadline approaches on 1st July, SOLAS is reminding Leaving Certificate students in Kerry that they can see the apprenticeships, traineeships and post leaving cert courses on offer by going to CAO.ie/options where all of these pathways can be explored

SOLAS, the state agency that oversees further education and training, is encouraging Leaving Cert students in Kerry, who may be still deciding their next step, to consider FET (further education and training) courses, traineeships and apprenticeship programmes as great local opportunities for achieving their career ambitions, with many exciting programmes being delivered through Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB).

Kerry ETB is delivering a broad local offering of FET courses and apprenticeships, and driving change in the sector.

Many FET courses and apprenticeship programmes delivered by Kerry ETB remain open for application, past the CAO change-of-mind closing date. They offer flexible, vocational learning that can include practical skills training and work experience.

According to SOLAS, the many and varied choices on offer through Kerry ETB can help Leaving Cert students in Kerry reach an informed decision on what career they want, while studying close to home, or support them on a pathway into higher education with apprenticeships also enabling them to learn and earn.

For example, FET courses offered in Kerry include Animal Care Assistant; Computer Games Design and Development; Music Technology; Personal Training and Nutrition; Tattoo Artistry; Accounting Technician; Advanced Outdoor Activity Instructor; IT Support Technician; among other choices, at levels five and six on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Apprenticeship opportunities in Kerry are also available to explore and applications are open all year round in a wide range of industries. Through an apprenticeship, you can gain an NFQ award at levels 5 to 10, not to mention the confidence that comes with hands-on experience in employment with a leading organisation in your chosen profession.

Commenting on the FET and apprenticeship options available through Kerry ETB, Andrew Brownlee, CEO of SOLAS, said: “FET is for everyone. There’s a broad range of FET options delivered through Kerry ETB, designed to help people looking to take the next step after completing their Leaving Certificate. Our research shows that many of these options, including apprenticeships and traineeships, can prepare learners for in-demand occupations that are emerging and expanding or that recruiters are struggling to fill. A FET course can also be a pathway to higher education.”

Owen O’Donnell, Director of Further Education and Training at Kerry ETB, stated: “Kerry College provides a wide range of choices for Leaving Certificate students, enabling them to reach their full potential and establish their career direction. Kerry College offers many career pathways through their ‘Courses for Progression’, which prepare students with a solid foundation for progression to third-level education, ‘Courses for Employment’, which focus on the competencies and certification required for a direct route into employment and ‘Apprenticeships’, which offer students employment through the ‘earn while you learn model’, gaining skills and competencies while achieving world-class certification.”

Leaving Certificate students can explore the FET courses and apprenticeship programmes on offer through Kerry ETB via the CAO website at www.CAO.ie/options.

Causeway School Pupils Win National Junior Entrepreneur Award

.
Drumnacurra NS pupils and staff celebrate their win.

PUPILS from a North Kerry school won a national award for their Junior Entrepreneur Programme class business.

3rd-6th Class Drumnacurra National School, Causeway, received the Top Teams Award for their classroom business, The Little Shop of Stitches.  A Kilcummin National School pupil won the Bright Spark Award.

Around 9,000 pupils from almost 300 schools island-wide are taking part in the 12th year of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP).

Continued below…

.

The achievement of Drumnacurra pupils is all the more impressive considering they were one of the smallest class groups on the programme this year. There are just nine pupils, ranging from 3rd class to 6th in the classroom.

The class was guided by their teacher, Regina O’Connor, through every step of the process.

They also teamed up with local craft skills teacher and dressmaker, Trish Riordan, who taught the children machine and hand sewing skills and even loaned them sewing machines to complete their eye-catching products.

Joanne Canty, Emma Diggin and Aubree Canty, 3rd-6th class pupils from Drumnacurra National School, Causeway, winners of the 2022 Junior Entrepreneur Programme Top Teams award.

The Little Shop of Stitches produced a range of eye-catching cards and gifts, including scented heart-shaped pouches, Valentine’s cards, Mother’s Day cards and key rings, all hand-made by the children, using only recycled materials.

The class sold their creations at a School Showcase Day and approached three local outlets – Hanly’s, The Forge Café and Flynn’s Shop, which all stocked the products.  The pupils made a profit of almost 400 euros and very generously donated 25% of their to the Causeway Community Playground project.

A MOMENTOUS Monday at St Brendan’s NS in Blennerville came to a close with a special graduation ceremony as sixth class pupils said farewell to their primary schooldays.

The 26 pupils and their families took shelter from the driving rain outside at the school hall for an emotional evening of reflection, song and laughter.

“They’ve been a fantastic group, very energetic, lots of fun and they’ll be missed,” said Principal Robbie O’Connell.

Fr Vitalis performed a blessing at the ceremony which was followed by a performance of Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ by the pupils.

Then a video was shown of each pupil describing the person who inspired them, the highlight of their time at the school and hopes for the future.

Each student received a pen, a hoodie and a certificate of graduation. For ten families, the graduation saw the last of their children leave the school, so they received a certificate of thanks for their support of Blennerville NS down the years.

The children will now embark on a new journey in various secondary schools around Tralee and we wish them the best for the future. Scroll down for photos…

NEW ‘age-friendly’ benches have been installed at two locations in the town square.

The newly installed seating was funded following an application by Tralee Chamber Alliance to Kerry County Council under the Community Enhancement Programme.

David Scott of Tralee Chamber Alliance said; “By making our outdoor spaces and public realm pleasant, clean, accessible and safe for older people we can create inclusive communities and age-friendly spaces. By designing for the young you exclude the old, but if you design for the old you include everyone”.

Combining polished granite, stainless steel and treated timber, the benches are of high quality, consistent with other seating along the Mall and Russell Street.

“This newly installed seating provides a functional, attractive, and inviting space encouraging all members of the public to stop and relax, chat with friends, and enjoy time in our town centre,” said David.

A NEW visitor experience has officially opened at the Blasket Islands, following an investment of €2.9million from Fáilte Ireland, the Office of Public Works and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

The Minister for State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan and Máire Ní Shúilleabháin Uí Chíobháin, daughter of famed Blasket author Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, re-opened the iconic Blasket Centre (Ionad an Bhlascaoid) in Dún Chaoin on the Western edge of the Dingle Peninsula.

Adjacent to the recently opened viewing platform with spectacular views over the Blasket Islands, the project includes a total transformation of the Centre’s exhibitions to deliver an authentic, and imaginative re-telling of the story of the Blasket islands, their rich heritage and their literature which is of national and international significance.

The Blasket Centre is a flagship visitor attraction for County Kerry and is expected to attract 63,000 visitors to the region by Year 5 of opening.

Fáilte Ireland, the Office of Public Works and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage have together invested €2.9million in the Centre.

The Centre has been designated as a Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Point, and together with the walkway and viewing platform, which opened to the public in 2020, offers dramatic views of the Blasket Island archipelago and the Atlantic coastline.

The Centre provides direct employment for 20 people when in operation and will support over 250 additional jobs in this Gaeltacht region.

Welcoming the official opening of the centre, Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin TD said; “The story of the Blasket Islands is one of great interest to domestic and international audiences. The renewed visitor experience at the Blasket Centre is an exciting and imaginative opportunity for visitors to engage with the richness of that culture.”

Patrick O’Donovan, T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, added: “I am delighted to reopen the Blasket Centre – Ionad an Bhlascaoid – here in Dún Chaoin today. It is a stunning piece of architecture in itself and is now home to a totally new exhibition that tells the story of the Blasket Islands in an imaginative multi-media experience. It also pays homage to the significant cultural footprint the islanders left in a series of books documenting their lives.” Scroll down for photos…

Austin Stacks GAA Club News

.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-11; Killarney Legion 0-14.

For the second week in a row our Seniors, on this occasion, came from five points down to share the spoils after another dramatic finish in the penultimate round of the Co. League. It was tit for tat for most of the first half with both sides on six points each as we approached half time. Legion could have been further ahead at this stage but for some brilliant defensive displays by our lads, including some brilliant saves by Wayne Guthrie early on. Legion added two more points in succession in the closing stages of the half to give them that 0-8 to 0-6 lead at the break.

We were still playing second fiddle for most of the second half as we trailed by five points with five minutes of normal time remaining (0-9 to 0-14). But then came that dramatic finish. Darragh O’Brien pointed from a free and then goal-keeper, Wayne Guthrie came up field, as he regularly does, to point from play.  Then in the second minute of additional time we were awarded a 13m free and with what looked like the whole 15 Legion players lining the goals up stepped Darragh O’Brien to crash the ball to the roof of the net and end the game all square – one of the best free kicks ever seen in Connolly Park, or anywhere else for that matter.

Team: Wayne Guthrie (0-1), Niall Fitzmaurice, Barry Shanahan, Barry Walsh, Armin Heinrich, Ronan Shanahan (0-1), Adam Curran, Michael O’Donnell (Capt (0-1), Greg Horan (0-2), Michael O’Gara, Cian Purcell, Conor Horan (0-2), Darragh O’Brien (1-4 – one goal free and 3 points frees), Gearóid Fitzgerald, Shane O’Callaghan.

Subs used: Paul O’Sullivan (36m), David Mannix (46m), Eoghan Carroll (50m).

With one more round remaining we are now on top of the table on 15 points along with Dr. Crokes and Dingle. All three have away games in the final round of the competition. We travel to Spa Killarney with Crokes going to Kenmare and Dingle making the short journey to An Ghaeltacht.

B FOOTBALL: With one more round to go our B Team have a home game against Beale. Even if we win this game our Div. 4 status for next season will also depend on other results in these final round 11 games.  So fingers crossed that things might turn our way on the day.

THE C TEAM: We travel to Ballymac on this Saturday evening(2nd July) to play Listry B in the Co. League Shield Final. Throw in is at 7pm with extra time and result on the day if required. When the two sides met in the earlier round of the competition we were most unlucky to come up short by just one point  – the Mid Kerry boys winning by 2-10 to 2-9..

U21 FOOTBALL: As we write the first round of the Co. Championship against Rathmore is going ahead in Connolly Park. Check our Website for further information.

KERRY MINORS: Hard luck on the Kerry Minors, including our own Colm Browne, Paddy Lane and Michael Tansley who just came up short to Mayo in last Saturday’s (25th June) All Ireland semi final – the Connacht boys winning with two points to spare (1-8 to 0-9) at the end.

KERRY SENIORS: Well done to the Kerry Seniors on their good win in Croke Park on Sunday. Great to see Joe O’Connor making an appearance late in the game, making an immediate impression when he put Seán O’Shea through for his point, increasing Kerry’s lead to seven points at that stage.

BEST OF LUCK: to Éidín Dowling, daughter of Evelyn and Eddie (former Club Footballer) and granddaughter of Brendan (former Club Footballer and the Club’s current President), who is representing Ireland this week in Nottingham in the ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships. The competition which started last Sunday concludes on this coming Saturday (2nd July).

Na Gaeil GAA Club News

.

Kerry v Mayo:  Well done to the Kerry team especially Jack, Diarmuid & Stefan last Sunday in their All-Ireland quarter-final win over Mayo.

Hurling Féile: Huge congratulations to the Tralee Parnell U15 team who won Div 3 of the National Hurling Féile last Saturday in Stamullin, Co. Meath. There were 7 Na Gaeil lads on the team namely Jeaic Canty, William Somers, Liam Cooper, Cathal Fitzgerald, Karl Cronin, Ryan Sheehy & Brian Reidy.

Kerry Ladies: Well done to Mary O’Connell and the Kerry Ladies team who beat Westmeath in their second game of Group C in Fitzgerald Stadium last Saturday. They have secured an All-Ireland quarter final spot against Armagh on Saturday the 9th of July.

Seniors: Round 10 of the Co League Div 2 saw us travel to Listowel yesterday, Sunday, to take on Listowel Emmets. The early exchanges saw a point apiece scored. A Dara Devine free saw Na Gaeil lead by 2 points to 1. However Emmets held the upper hand for a 5 minute spell and added 3 points without reply.

Dan O’Connor kept Na Gaeil in touch with a point following a good mark. Just before halftime Emmets added a free to leave them ahead by 5 points to 3 at the break. Emmets stretched that lead to 3 points early in the second half but the response from Na Gaeil was impressive.

Mike Griffin added 2 points, Dan O’Connor scored another and 1 each from Dara Devine and Devon Burns pushed Na Gaeil into a 2 point lead. A free by Emmets cut the gap to a single point nearing the end and it looked like a draw might be our lot but up popped Mike Griffin with 2 frees to get Na Gaeil the win they so badly needed.

Team: Devon Burns, Jack Doyle, Niall O’Mahony, Damien Bourke, Fergal Barry, Eoin Doody, Enda O’Connor, Eoin O’Neill, Tomás Ó hAinféin, Kieran O’Donovan, Dan Goggin, Luke Barrett, Dara Devine, Dan O’Connor, Mike Griffin. Subs: Ruairí O’Sullivan, Jack Sheehan, James O’Connor, Seamus Looney, Jimmy Ó Suilleabhán, Declan Cooney.

Split the Bucket: Congratulations to Seán O’Connor who was the winner of €54.20 in the Bord na nÓg Split The Bucket last Saturday night.

U14 girls: Hard luck to our U14 girls who were unlucky to lose out by a goal to Listowel Emmets last Monday night in the Div 2 of the County League.

U13 boys:  In June downpours in Killeen last Friday evening the young warriors of Na Gaeil U13 Green team won the spoils against a gallant Keel/Listry outfit. Na Gaeil started brightly and with the aid of a cross wind kicked two points, one a peach from the left wing from Ethan Doyle.

The visitors settled and the sizeable home crowd realised that this would be a tense tussle. Eoghan Behan was winning his battle at corner back and netminder Ben O’Sullivan was giving an exhibition of kicking when the game had its crucial minutes. Andy Costello found the net for Na Gaeil after a sweeping move involving captain Philip Doyle and a brilliant through ball from Aaron O’Donovan.

From the resulting kick-out Luca Cronin pinched possession, delivered to Costello who sidestepped the Keel/Listry keeper to put daylight between the teams. Half time score Na Gaeil 2-4, Keel/Listry 0-4.

The second half started with the Na Gaeil men being put under constant pressure from a determined Keel/Listry team who had already beaten Na Gaeil by the minimum a short 3 weeks ago.

Seán O’Connell & Eoghan Daly were making lung-bursting runs for possession and Jacob Drzymala and Rhys O’Connor were on a mountain of ball as tension was rising. A fortuitous goal for the visitors was cancelled out by Costello completing his hat-trick after great work from the energetic Ruadh O’Brien and Kieran Feely.

A super finish from an acute angle by Jonathan Sheehy, assisted by Eoin Hannon meant that a goal separated the sides going into the final minutes. The Na Gaeil backs had to stand firm.

Fionán Collins was colossal at full-back, Jake Barrett was superb and O’Brien’s bravery was rousing the home supporters. In injury time, Keel/Listry won a free kick needing a goal to levelthe game, but there was to be no passing the green wall. Congrats to captain Philip Doyle, who thanked the Keel/Listry players, his coaches and the referee in a great speech.

Well done to all the boys and thanks to all for their support on such a miserable evening! Final Score. Na Gaeil 3-6, Keel/Listry 2-6.

Special mention to James Kelly, Adam Lunn, Sam Gleasure and Ephrem Falvey who were away and couldn’t make the final.  Team; Ben O’Sullivan; Eoghan Behan, Fionán Collins, Ruadh O’Brien; Philip Doyle, Rhys O’Connor, Jake Barrett; Andy Costello, Jacob Drzymala; Eoghan Daly, Aaron O’Donovan, Ethan Doyle; Kieran Feely, Eoin Hannon, Luca Cronin; Jonathan Sheehy, Seán O’Connell

Community Games

What a successful weekend for Blennerville/ Ballyard in the community games county athletics event in An Riocht, Castleisland. Today we had 26 athletes competing in the Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 categories.

The weather started off kinder than expected and through great organisation by the officials all the heats ran off in the morning in fair conditions. In the under 10 200m and under 12 200m we had already had 6 qualified for semifinals (Dylan Murphy, Hannah Enright, Hugh Costello, Jace Flynn, Sophie Mulgrew and Niamh Murphy. It was great experience for Cillian Enright, Mary-Kate O’Shea who were unlucky not to progress.

Next up were the under 8s, all with a new experience on the track. Ben Smith ran a great sprint; Emma Higgins and Esme Nolan ran fantastically earning spots in the semifinals. Aaron Costello and Olivia Lynch ran excellent 80m sprints both progressing comfortably to the semifinals also. At under 10 100m Thomas Higgins comfortably won his heat and both Siún Foley and Harriet O’Loughlen placed well to also progress to the semifinals. The under 12 standard was extremely competitive, all 3 of our runners Tommy Costello, Eddie Hayes and Kayla Reidy were just outside the top 3 needed to progress to the semifinals.

Aaron Costello just missed out on placing in his semifinal, Emma Higgins, Esme Nolan, and Olivia Lynch all ran superbly to progress to their under 8 sprint finals.

Up next there was great excitement for the relays the mixed team of U10, Thomas, Dylan, Grace and Siún ran a great race but placed 5th. The U12 boys of Hugh, Tommy, Eddie, and Stephen finished 5th also. The U12 girls Sophie, Niamh, Amy, and Kayla ran a great team race to qualify for the relay finals.

Rylan Flynn showed his impressive throwing skills with 5th in the ball throw. After a short break, the rain began and the Under 10 hurdles were up next. Luke Galvin, Noah Fealy, Tiffany Nyere, and Grace Costello ran over 60m with 4 hurdles. None of our athletes had competed over hurdles before and ran very well enjoying the experience but didn’t progress.

In the middle distance U12 600m Stephen Enright ran a very strong race to qualify for the final and Amy Noonan finished well in the lead to easily progress to the girl’s final.

With the rain now lashing the athletes braved it in the semifinals. Thomas won his deservedly taking his place in the final, both Siún and Harriet were just outside qualifying. Kayla and Jace just missed out on top 3 in the 200m, Hugh ran a faster race than his heat to make it to the final 6. Niamh Murphy impressed us all with her strong athletic stride to win her semifinal easily.

The conditions were now very wet for both athletes and spectators, we are very grateful for all of you who stayed on to cheer on our finalists. it worked!

Emma, Esme, Hugh, Stephen, and our girls relay team were unlucky not to medal today but should be very proud to get to that level in county competition.

We saw our first medal with Olivia Lynch taking Silver in the girls U8 80m. Thomas Higgins also running a great race to take Silver in the boys U10 100m, Niamh Murphy ran a great 200m to take bronze and Amy Noonan blitzed the U12 girls 600m to finish very strongly and won gold. All these athletes who won medals today will now progress to the regional community games to represent County Kerry. We are thrilled for them and wish them the best of luck.

Congratulations to our six athletes participating on day 2 of a wet county final. Emily Corridon ran her very first county community games 800m against an experienced squad. Well done in taking part. Jack Noonan ran extremely well today in his heats and made the 100m finals. Great running Jack. Our medal winners today were Aoibheann McCarthy pewter medal 800m, Dan O Connor silver 100m well done to you all and now go on to the regional finals in Ennis in July. Our u 15 mixed relay team of Aiden Hayes, Lucy Mulgrew, Aoibheann McCarthy and Dan O Connor who got gold and will represent Kerry in the national finals in Carlow in August. Thank you all for participating and best of luck with the next stage. Thanks to all our parents for your help and support… we hope you might help us on the committee to keep the area running for the future!

Juvenile Academy

The usual Sunday Morning Academy was called off last week because of heavy rain over the weekend. Alot of the Juvenile’s joined the walk for Mary Gardiner instead. See you all next Sunday.

U11

We had a great turnout for training Wednesday night so well done to all who attended. We played Beale last Thursday in Blennerville. Well done to the lads who togged out and represented St Pats very well. We will have training again Tuesday night next. Our final game in the U11 County Go Games program is Thursday at home again to Finuge.

U12 Girls

Our u12 girls have had a great run in the county league coming 3rd on the table. We were beaten by a much more physical and stronger Ballyduff team on Tuesday night in the last round, but our girls fought hard. We have now qualified for a b final against Austin stacks b’s which will be played on Wednesday night in Ballyrickard at 8.15pm. Come and support these young girls who have worked so hard all year and truly deserve to be in another final. Well done to Chloe for winning our player of the week trophy this week. Chloe was the well-deserved winner this week as she played outstanding in full back against a very strong team. She was catching the ball out of the sky and bursting through which is exactly what we have been working on in training. She also continued to do this at training on Thursday night so well-done Chloe.

Seniors

In horrible conditions we travelled to Glenflesk, the opposition were first to score with three points in a row. Kieran Hurley had his chance and put a point on the board, unfortunately this was the only score as conditions made it very difficult to hold onto the ball. Glenflesk continued to put scores up on the board with four more points added. Half time score read St Pats 0-01 to Glenflesk 0-07.

As the rain leveled off St Pats took the field a different team, within a few minutes of this half beginning the opposition scored two goals quickly and also added another point. Fergal O Brien scored two of his own points in quick succession, Adrian Greaney saw his chance and scored his own point. Glenflesk replied with a goal, our own Adrian Greaney wanted a piece of the action and scored a goal of his own.

Cillian O Riordan had the ball and put it over the bar to add another a point to the scoreboard. With the ball becoming slippery at times, it was Eoin Greaney who was there for the ball to fall into his hands and give him the chance to score a point to add to our score. Glenflesk saw this and went ahead and scored two goals in quick succession. Fergal O Brien got a point in the dying minutes of this half unfortunately this wasn’t enough and Glenflesk added another point to finish this half on a score line of St Pats 1-07 to Glenflesk 5-09.

Our seniors final match Round 11 against Reenard is to be played in two weeks’ time on the 10th of July at 2pm in Blennerville.

SENIORS

Ballymacelligott  2-06

Kerins O Rahilly’s 0-10

Last Saturday evening our senior side travelled to Ballymac for round 10 of the Division 1 County League. The weather on the day was never going to allow for free flowing football, and both teams struggled greatly with the elements.

Lining out without a large number of regulars , which allowed us to give game time to some of our fringe players , the game was always going to be difficult against a home side who needed the win to assure survival in the division.

On the balance of things the home side were deserved winners. The concession of two soft goals midway through the first half were to be the decisive scores in the game, both coming from speculative long balls into the square, which we failed to deal with.

That put Ballymac into an eight point lead, and it was always going to be a huge challenge to claw the lead back.

By half time we had reduced the deficit to four, the score 2-03 to -05.
Our scores coming from Gearoid Savage and Barry John Keane with two frees and point from play from Con Barrett (1) and Sean Walsh (2).

Ballymac got off to the better start in the second half extending their lead with an early point. We were dealt another blow shortly after with the dismissal of Con Barrett.

Despite this we held the lions share of possession and tried hard to get back into the game. We had points from Diarmuid O Sullivan , two well executed kicks from placed balls, and frees from Gearoid Savage and Barry John Keane, to leave the minimum between the side with six minutes to go.

From the next restart , we manufactured a close in free when Danial Bowler was pulled down, Barry John Keane converted the resultant free to tie the contest 2-04 to 0-10. However Ballymac finished the stronger kicking two late scores to take the points and secure their Division 1 status for 2023.

Team:S Foley,D Buckley,P Begley,S Collins,D McElligott,S Brosnan,P Neenan,S Walsh(2),D Bowler, BJ Keane(3f),R O Carroll, G Savage(2f),D O’Sullivan(2f,1 ‘45),S McElligott. Subs Used: C Coffey(1), B Hanafan,C O’Sullivan.

U12 GIRLS
The weather was very kind to both teams for our round 7 games of the Co. We appreciate your generosity.

We had to cancel our pizza party sponsored also by Eleanor and Roy last Saturday because of the yellow weather warning for rain… there would have been no enjoyment in it . Plenty of time yet though!

Juvenile Notes
The weather didn’t stop our juveniles from training on Sunday morning. A lot of them braved the elements and had great fun training with their coaches. All age groups enjoyed their training sessions learning key skills and finishing with a game to put them into practice. We re hoping for better weather next Sunday as academy continues at 10am in Ballyrickard.
U5s, U7s U9s and U11s Boys- had a great mornings training. The coaches in each group were very impressed that the weather did not deter them from training and showing how well they can play in wet conditions. This week the coaches have asked that they practice their kicking and hand passing as much as they can at home.

U6, U8 and U10 Girls  – put in a great training session last Sunday morning in each of their groups. Our U6 s really pushed themselves despite the weather and showed great skills in wet conditions. Our U8s and U10s worked on clearing the ball quickly when they get their hands on it.

They practiced kicking with accuracy and speed of kicking the ball, followed by a small sided game to put what they had worked on to the test. Practice at home this week is 20 kicks everyday off a wall or to a partner.

All three groups U6s U8s and U10s Girls have go games away to Churchill next Sunday 3rd July 2022 meeting at Churchill pitch for 9.15am further details will be sent through clubzap app during the week. Please ensure you are added to your age group if not please message admin on ClubZap.

U13 Boys – Despite their best efforts our U13 boys lost to Glenfesk in the semi final on a score line of 5-13 to 3-7 the boys put in a fantastic effort they played some fantastic football and deserved more on the night goals came from Cian Fitzgerald, Ryan Nix and goal of the night came from Kevin Horgan, other scorers on the night were Jude Lacey and Barry Sullivan. With Cayden Roche and Christian Dunne running their socks off in midfield. All boys put in huge work and all the subs who played their part when they came on it was great effort from everyone.  Training continues in Ballyrickard on Tuesday at 6.15pm.

Club Senior Team

On Saturday night Ballymacelligott hosted Kerins O’Rahillys in Rd. 10 of the Division 1 Co. Lge. On a very wet, cold and blustery night that you would not expect in June this hotly contested match served up plenty of entertainment for the crowd who braved the elements.

Despite a large amount of possession KOR failed to convert on the score board with Ballymac seeing the better of the first half with 2 goals. However, forced substitution due to injury turned the tide back in KOR’s favour. Ballymac lead by 4 points at the half.

A red card half way through the second half saw KOR reduced to 14 but that only inspired them to press Ballymac with the game all square on the 55min.

However, 2 points gave Ballymac the lead which they did not surrender despite a late black card. Final score was Ballymac 2-06 / KOR 0-10

U12 Girls

U12 girls who beat MKL Gaels Wednesday evening

The Under 12 Girls had a County League match at home against MKL Gaels B last Wednesday evening.

They arrived to an immaculate pitch which had kindly been prepared for them by Club Members.

Despite having four players away the girls started strongly in the first half with some excellent goals to find their rhythm.

The girls exhibited some excellent skills including some drills which have been worked on at training.

This continued in the Second Half with all 22 Girls playing their part towards a convincing win against a tough opposition.

The Girls were cheered on by a rousing crowd in the stand which only encouraged them to victory.

U14 GIRLS

John Mitchel’s u14 girls travelled to Lewis Road the previous weekend to play Dr Crokes in Round 4 of the County league

With both teams unbeaten in this competition, it was always going to be a tough battle and so it proved, with Mitchel’s making the early running, but struggling to score before Crokes got an early goal and led for most of the first half.

Mitchel’s regrouped with Faye and Sadbh stiffening the full back line and Laoise and Nicole strong in the half back line and goals from Kerri and Ellie meant that the Tralee team were only down a point at the break.

The second half was low scoring, with defense on top, but going into the closing minutes Mitchel’s were a point to the good, only for a late Crokes goal to settle the outcome.

Disappointing on the night but it was a very evenly balanced game and congratulations to Dr Crokes.

Mitchel’s were due to play Legion at home on last Friday night but the weather proved to be too bad and both sides agreed to a postponement.

Training continues next week with notifications to be sent out to parents in relation to times and dates.

On Wed evening we were scheduled to play Milltown in the first round of the central league.

Both teams were on the pitch and ready for action but unfortunately no referee showed up and with no suitable ref available at such short notice we agreed to play a challenge game.

It was fairly well contested with Mitchel’s winning by 3or 4 points, we train again on Monday evening 5-30pm with our next game against Churchill away on wed/Thurs evening fixture tbc

Tralee Parnells U15 team and managment with the Michael Cusack trophy after winning the Division 3 Feile na nGael competition for 2022

Féile na nGael

Our U15’s had a magnificent day on Saturday in Stamullen Co Meath and made club history once again in winning the All Ireland Division 3 Feile na nGaeil championship for 2022.

After winning the Kerry Féile na nGael Division 1 competition an organising committee was setup to prepare for this weekend.  The committee ran a number of fundraising events while also arranging all of the logistics involved in travelling to the finals.

As a result of the funds raised, the club was able to ensure that the  boys were well prepared including physio sesssions where required together with specially commissioned customised kit and bag.

Wearing their new feile outfits the lads left Caherslee on Friday morning to head to their overnight accommodation at Maynooth university.

Proceedings got under way at 11am on Saturday as the lads played one of the toughest matches of the day against Mount Leinster Rangers of Carlow.  Final score: 1-9 to 1-7. Their second match against Castlebar Mitchels finished on a score of 2-12 to 1-1. In their final group match the boys met Donaghmore Ashboure which ended on a score of 5-7 to 0-4.

Their next match was the semi-final for the cup where they were up against Padraig Pierses of Roscommon which ended with a final score of 3-9 to 0-0.

In preparation for the final, the boys and coaches retreated to the dressing room for some tactical discussions.

The cup final was against nearby club Trim. This was a low scoring tight match but our lads did lead from the start.  Final score 0-9 to 0-2.

With much excitement and celebration the team captain Tomas O’Connell accepted the Michael Cusack Trophy.

The boys showed huge maturity throughout the day as they trusted in each other and really played as a team.  They showed great passion and hunger to win every tussel. Well done boys on a fantastic achievement.

Huge credit must go to manager Brian Shannahan and coaches Mark, Andrew, Diarmuid, Morgan, Sean and David.  This management team have guided and inspired the lads to work as a team and believe in each other. Thank you must also go the organising committee as the whole event was very well organised with everything in place to support the lads.

Tralee Parnells U15 Captain Tomas O’Connell with the Michael Cusack Div 3 Feile na nGael Trophy

There was a wonderful atmosphere in Stramullen on Saturday as a very strong Parnells contingent travelled in support.  Thank you to all who made the journey to support the boys

Finally we would like to give a huge thank you to all businesses and individuals who donated to make this weekend possible.  They are too many to mention here but full details can be found on our website and on our social media pages.  Thank you also to everyone that donated to our Gofundme page https://gofund.me/695b4b20 and to those that attended the quiz night.

Tralee Parnells U15s winners of Division 3 Feile na nGael for 2022

U8 Camogie

On Wednesday night the girls welcomed Causeway to Caherselee. All the girls gave 100% and had a fantastic game.  A big thank you to Causeway for travelling to Tralee. We had great support from the parents also a big thanks to Caoilinn Hickey and John Diggin for refereeing the game.

U10 Camogie

Well done to all the girls who also played Causeway last Wednesday in Caherslee.  It was great to see the girls giving it their all and showing all the skills that they have learned. Thanks to Causeway for travelling and to our U10 youth coach Lana in making her referees debut, thank you Lana.

Intermediate Championship

Our senior hurling team are busy preparing for the intermediate club championship which starts this coming weekend.  Their first match will be against Kenmare and takes place in Kenmare on Friday evening 1st July at 7:30pm.  We hope that club members will travel to support the team.

Club Website

As our club is expanding with various apps and web pages it was decided that we should have a club website as a central location to find out everything about the club.  The site is mobile friendly and includes links to our club shop, social media pages, Clubforce as well as various policies and procedures.  Our existing blog site (https://traleeparnellshurling.blogspot.com) which contains every club news item since the club was formed in 2012 will remain as an invaluable fully searchable repository for all historic club news.   The site is live and can be found at https://traleeparnells.gaa.ie.

Lotto

To support the cost of running our ever expanding club a bi-weekly lotto will start this week with the first draw on the evening of Monday 4th July.  The initial jackpot will be 1000 euro.  Players must select 4 out of 28 numbers and can play 3 lines for 5 euro.  To play follow the link on our new web site https://traleeparnells.gaa.ie or use the Clubforce app.  Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win that jackpot !

Professional Performers Invited To Apply For Live Performance Scheme

.

A FOURTH round of the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme (LLPPS) has been announced and applications are invited from people wishing to avail of the funding.

The aim of the scheme is to support employment opportunities for professional performers and technicians across every town, city and county in Ireland and to help underpin the recovery of the commercial live performance sector. This round will support the production of performances from late July–31st October 2022.

Kerry County Council (KCC) invites applications from individual professional performers, professional bands, groups of professional musicians, event producers, promoters, arts organisations, festivals and venues for indoor and outdoor performances throughout Kerry’s five Municipal Districts.

KCC also welcomes performances programmed in Local Authority owned cultural and outdoor spaces, for example, ANAM: Killarney Arts & Cultural Centre, the Island of Geese amphitheatre and Listowel Square, and as part of Culture Night (23rd September) and night-time economy.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr. Jimmy Moloney, has welcomed this funding. “Following a very successful LLPPS3 with funding awarded to 21 applications, which supported over 100 performances, artists and crew, and events from April to June, it is clear that this scheme is an important support to the sector and we look forward to seeing some more great indoor and outdoor performances over the coming months.”

The guidelines and application form are available from https://www.kerrycoco.ie/arts/arts-forms/ and the deadline for receipt of completed applications is 4pm on Wednesday 20th July. Any queries to the Arts Office on 066 7183541 or arts@kerrycoco.ie.

In the year ahead, he said he would focus on the Tralee Fenit Greenway which he described as an incredible tourism and community asset to the area.

He said the amenity will afford opportunities for a number of localities and will be enhanced further when it links to the North Kerry Greenway. He insisted that a link to Ardfert village with the greenways is essential.

Mayor Sheehy said the housing issue would be another focus during his tenure, as well as healthcare and education issues.

AFTER a month of activities, Mary Gardiner completed her 100k in June for Cancer Research with a little help from her friends.

The popular local Garda, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in January, took to the road in the rain on Sunday afternoon accompanied by a couple of hundred people to finish her fundraising challenge which has raised over €25,000 so far.

The weather turned miserable just as the walkers set off from the Blennerville Windmill car park just after 12 noon, but nothing could dampen Mary’s spirits on the day.

“It’s unbelievable, especially given the weather conditions,” said Mary. “The support I’ve had all month has been amazing and today is the icing on the cake.

“It’s lovely to see all my basketball friends, Garda colleagues, friends and family from Cork, it’s absolutely unbelievable, we’ve turned Kerry pink. It’s a great boost,” she said.

Mary will undergo surgery today (Monday) and faces more treatment in the months ahead. She expressed her thanks to everyone who organised fundraising events and who contributed to the campaign over the last month.

It’s not over yet though, Andrea O’Donoghue is organising the annual Tony O’Donoghue Memorial Walk next Saturday from the Blennerville Windmill car park with funds raised going towards Mary’s campaign. Scroll down for photos…
