Austin Stacks GAA Club News

.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-14; Kilcummin 0-9.

Our Seniors put up their best performance of the season so far with a must-win display in the penultimate round of the Co. League played in Connolly Park on this Sunday afternoon (25th June). A brilliant start saw Greg Horan win the throw-in and Jordan Kissane opening the scoring after just ten seconds.

Eleven minutes then elapsed before Kilcummin, with two quick points took the lead. Donagh McKivergan then equalized from  a free in the 13th minute after a foul on Colm Browne.

Colm was involved again three minutes later when he intercepted a dangerous move by the opposition and Donagh Mac was again on target from play to put us in the lead again, a lead which we never lost thereafter.

Another pointed free by Donagh and two from play by Jordan Kissane and Jack Morgan left us ahead at the break by double scores (0-6 to 0-3).

Even though Kilcummin always looked dangerous on the attack we went on to out-score then again in the second half ( 1-8 to 0-6) – our goal coming in the 38th minute from Shane O’Callaghan.

After the game Team Manager, Billy Lee presented Michael O’Donnell with The Celsius Mensware Man of the Match Award.

With one more round to play – away to Gneeveguilla in a fortnights time – it is still in the lap of the gods as to whether we will survive in the top tier for the next season, even if we win that last game, as other results will also have a determining factor. So as the man said long ago in a similar situation  – how do we do it – by prayer and fasting but not too much of either.

Team: Michael Tansley, Niall Fitzmaurice, Barry Shanahan, Paul O’Sullivan (0-1), Colm Browne, Armin Heinrich, Jack Morgan (0-1), Greg Horan, Michael O’Donnell (0-3 – one free), Eoghan Carroll, Fiachna Mangan, Donagh McKivergan (0-4 – two frees), Jordan Kissane 0-3), Cillian Litchfield, Shane O’Callaghan (1-1).

Subs used: Seán Quilter (48m), Brendan O’Sullivan (55m) (0-1), Donnacha Sayers (60m).

THE D TEAM: Clounmacon 0-6; Austin Stacks; 3-11

The D Team travelled to Clounmacon on last Friday night and turned in another great performance to add to their opening game of the season just over two months ago (a 5-14 to 1-1 win against Scartaglin on the 16th April).

We still have two back games to complete, both away, against Duagh and Beaufort. No fixtures for same have come to hand as we write.

CLUB CARDS: Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Mondays and Thursdays with the starting time of 9pm sharp.

Casa Dei Bambini — Reimagining The World Of Early Childcare And Education

Sponsored

.

Susan Quirke-Crowley of Mounthawk Montessori School says she is thrilled to celebrate their ‘Casa Dei Bambini’ Outdoor Montessori Schools & Gardens which was launched by Minister for Education, Norma Foley T.D. earlier this month…

I am excited and honoured to bring our Innovative Reggio Emilia Inspired Practice to our Montessori Schools in County Kerry through our Casa Dei Bambini, Outdoor Montessori Schools & Gardens.

I was selected as one of only 24 Delegates included to represent Ireland at Reggio Children, Reggio Emilia, in Italy.

Our Irish delegation was included amongst 406 International delegates from 27 countries across the 5 continents.

.

Organised by Early Childhood Ireland and funded through National Pyjama Day, we were included within the global gathering from April 17th to 21st, the first such event hosted at Reggio Emilia, Italy, since Covid 19 struck.

It was a moving and emotional gathering in a magical and inspirational city with a cohort of inspirational people.

Malaguzzi says #NothingWithoutJoy and this was an opportunity full of inspiration, awakening of endless possibilities, a deep hope for the possibilities for the future and profound joy.

As Director and Founder of the Mounthawk Montessori School Group, amongst Irish Early Years Professionals and interested sectoral stakeholders and policy makers; our experiences in Italy have brought nothing but inspiration to us.

We now look to the future and at how we can merge the best of Reggio Emilia with the best of Aistear, The Early Years Curriculum Framework and Síolta , Quality Framework, in our Montessori Schools, at home in Ireland.

On my visits to the Reggio Emilia Early Years environments, attending workshops, conferences, and Ateliers, I found that there was a palpable sense and aura of calm at Reggio Emilia.

Within the educational contexts and settings, children and adults were allowed time space and opportunity to engage in their experiences and projects.

There was a feeling of collegiality from the arrival at the settings, until one departed. This has continued at home, within our schools through our Community of Practice, where the generosity of spirit and sharing of Reggio Inspired practice is vibrant.

We are Healthy Ireland Smart Start Pre-schools and The Department of Education has awarded us Excellent in all four areas, in their Inspection and Assessment of our Early Years Curriculum In Mounthawk & Maureen’s.

We have been announced by the All-Ireland Business Foundation as the All-Ireland Montessori School of the Year for the 3rd Year in A Row.

We are proud and honoured to share best practice with our children and families through the high-quality early year’s education provided by our teachers in our schools.

For Further Information please contact Susan Quirke-Crowley, 086-8153757 & Helena Wallace Dowling 066-7189964.

Seniors:

Perhaps it was the wind, the intermittent rain, the slippery surface or the depleted squads but a game that never ignited fittingly ended in a draw with both sides happy to take a point at the end of the day.

We started without David Moran, Tommy Walsh and Shane McElligott from the previous win over Spa but with Sam Pituch and Keelan Crowe also absent from the proposed starting XV, Darragh McElligott and Gazza were both included from the start.

We had the aid of the elements in the first half and were full value for our early 4 point lead with two from the lively Gearóid Dillane and one each from Diarmuid and Darragh; Dingle raised their first flag in the 12th minute and followed this with another to halve the lead, 0-04 to 0-02 after the first quarter.

We added another 3 points before the break with Tom Hoare (2) and Ben Hanafin getting on the score sheet but also had 3 wides in this period along with a no of shots dropping short or going astray – Dingle added one more point to leave the half time score at 0-07 to 0-03.

Daniel Bowler come in at half time at wing back with TJ Heaphy reverting to the centre following Con Barrett’s forced withdrawal but it was Dingle who were now forcing the pace with two quickfire points – we replied in kind via Darragh and Tom but Dingle were now in the ascendancy with Mikey & Niall Geaney prominent, Mikey with the final 3 points of the game.

Despite an additional two minutes at the end, neither side could break the deadlock and so we will head to the final game vs Legion in two weeks time with the spectre of relegation still hanging over us despite being on 10 points and ranking 6th in the table.

Team: Rob O’Connor, Jake Foley, Shane Brosnan, Darragh McElligott, Ben Hanafin ( 0-01), Con Barrett, TJ Heaphy, Seán Walsh, Diarmuid O’Sullivan ( 0-01f), Tom Hoare ( 0-03, 1f), Conor Hayes, Gearóid Dillane ( 0-02), Darragh O’Connor ( 0-02, 1f), Gazza , Barry John.

Subs: Daniel Bowler, Stephen Nix, Fenton Collins, Tommy Walsh.

Division 6:

Our winning run continued in Div 6 last night when we got the better of Firies in a tense encounter.
We got off to the perfect start with green flags from Gazza & Sam but by half time Firies, 2nd in the table, had worked their way back into the game & led by the minimum, 1-06 to 2-02.

We started the 2nd half in determined mood & wrestled back control with good scores from Gazza & Daniel Bowler – a Fenton Collins goal was immediately negated by a similar Firies score but, we held our composure & when Gazza pointed from distance for his fourth point of the game, it was enough to see us home.

Overall, this was a great team effort with our defence solid, Fenton & Daniel Nix giving us an edge at midfield & Gazza, Daniel Bowler & Paudie Griffin excelling up front.

Our next game is in three weeks’ time, the weekend of the 14th July  when we make the long journey to Valentia to visit the table toppers.

Team: Seán Collins, Stephen Nix, Sam Pituch, Aidan Mangan, Barry Foley, Seán Collins, Jordan Foley, Daniel Nix, Fenton Collins, Seán Griffin, Daniel Bowler, Paudie Griffin, Gazza, Keelan Crowe, Sam McCarthy.
Subs : Deaglán Crowe, TJ Heaphy, Gavin Burrows.

Commiserations to Tomás Kennedy and his Kerry minor colleagues on exiting the All Ireland at the semi final stage when losing to Monaghan on Sat by three points, 1-11 to 0-11.

The game turned on the goal conceded deep into injury time in the first half when a free from distance somehow found its way to the net to leave Monaghan ahead at the break; try as they might, Kerry could not get back into the game in the 2nd half.

Best of luck to Micheál next weekend when Kerry play Tyrone – this rivalry is sure to bring out the best in both sides and a cracking match is in store!

Lotto:

This week’s jackpot stands at €7,600 ( Monday 26th) – you can purchase your tickets online, or in the following outlets: The Klub, Rock St PO, Betty’s Bar or Jimmy’s – tickets €2 or 3 for €5.

Senior Men: Last Saturday evening our senior team travelled to Currow for Round 10 of the County League. Weather conditions were poor with heavy showers and a strong breeze making it difficult for the teams as well as the handful of hardy supporters in attendance.

Na Gaeil elected to play with the breeze in the first half but it proved to be tricky. Our lads dominated possession from the throw-on but kicked a couple of wides before Dara Devine got our first score after 3 minutes.

A misplaced pass in the Currow defence saw Dara add a second point and this was soon followed by a point from Jack Bourke. Then came Na Gaeil’s first goal. The ball was played into Kieran O’Connor in the left corner forward position.

He played a one-two with his brother Seán before cutting in along the end line and rifling the ball into the roof of the Currow net. From the kickout Jack Bourke added another point & Na Gaeil were coasting, 1-4 to no score, after just 9 minutes.

Currow did finally get on the scoresheet before Jimi Ó Suilleabháin came up from defence to kick a lovely score to restore our 7 pointadvantage. Currow however responded with a well-worked goal followed by a point to bring them right back into the contest with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.

Thankfully Na Gaeil composed themselves again and added points from Damien Bourke, Kieran O’Connor, Jack Bourke and a free from Dara Devine to lead by 1-9 to 1-2 at the break.

Despite playing against the breeze in the second half Na Gaeil continued to enjoy the majority of possession but kicked 3 wides in a row. Eventually a Dara Devine free increased our lead to 8 points but Currow were dogged and landed the next 3 points without reply.

A point from the excellent Declan Cooney in the 27th minute was cancelled out by a Currow point moments later but it was Na Gaeil who finished the stronger with a point from Eoghan Daly and the icing on the cake – a goal from Declan Cooney after good work by substitutes Rory Reen and Eoghan Daly. Final score: Currow 1-6, Na Gaeil 2-12.

Team: Devon Burns, Jimi Ó Suilleabháin,Eoin Doody, Ryan O’Neill, Ruairí O’Sullivan, Damien Bourke, Kieran O’Donovan, Morgan Madden, Jack Doyle, Declan Cooney, Seán O’Connor, Tadhg Reen, Kieran O’Connor, Dara Devine, Jack Bourke. BLENNERVILLE BALLYARD COMMUNITY GAMES ATHLETICS 2023

Two wonderful days of County athletics in Castleisland with huge representation from Blennerville Ballyard.

Day 1.

Fantastic individual performances with lots of unlucky 4th placings but plenty making it through to the afternoon semifinals. The U10 mixed relay heats and the 12 boys’ and girls’ relays provided great excitement.

The girls came 4th, unlucky to miss out on 3rd place as a team. The U10 mixed had a fantastic finish to win their heat and the U 12 boys were very strong throughout to win their heat! Jace Flynn got gold medal in long jump and straight to Nationals.

Medal Winners! U10 girls hurdles Mary Kate O’Shea Silver and Stevie Rose O’Sullivan 4th Pewter! Fantastic running and jumping girls and a fantastic achievement to have 2 from our area in the final!

Fantastic sprinting all day by Harriet O’Loughlan winning her silver medal. Sophie Mulgrew! 3rd place in 200m u12.  Caden O’Sullivan Silver medal in boys U12 200m.

Day 2

Another successful morning for Blennerville/ Ballyard at the county community games athletics. First up Caoimhe Loughran made her debut on the track with U14 girl’s hurdles. She jumped really well and was unfortunate not to qualify for the final in 5th place.

Next up in the U14 girls 100m sprints Kaela Reidy and Niamh Murphy ran great races in very fast heats, both were unfortunate not to make the top 4 to qualify.

In the boys U14 100m Rian Flynn and Hugh Costello both ran very fast heats to qualify 4th for the boy’s final later.

The heavens opened just as Stephen Enright began his U14 800m race, he finished very strongly just short of taking 5th place to qualify. Tommy Costello ran his heat next finishing 4th and earning a spot in the boys U14 800m final later.

As usual Amy Noonan ran a fantastic race in girls U14 800m easily winning her heat and qualifying for the final.  Great racing in the afternoon by Tommy Costello in a very fast 800m final.

Amy Noonan ran a fantastic final against very tough competition to win a bronze medal. Hugh Costello ran well in a tight 100m final. in the same race Rian Flynn ran a fantastic race to finish in 3rd place and earn a bronze medal!

Last up was the boys U14 relay final… they did very well as a team of U13 year olds and finished outside the medals.

Thank you to Norma Flynn and Fiona Costello for giving up their time over the weekend to support the athletes and to Marie for her hard work in the background all year (and many before)!

Thank you to the parents of the athletes for supporting and cheering all the children competing. Hope all the athletes had a good experience and enjoyed it.

We have a great community spirit and great talent in Blennerville/ Ballyard. We hope to have a meeting in September inviting more parents to get involved in keeping our area strong and entering a wide variety of events going forwards!  Well done to all the athletes and thank you to the organisers of Kerry community games for a very well-run event.

Juvenile Academy

U5

Thanks to Aiden, Anthony, and Johnathon for running the under 5 session this week. They avoided the showers to have a fun session with lots of games. Well done to Brandon and Taylor for standing out as players of the week today! See you all next weekend.

U7

Well done to all our U7 Boys who trained on Sunday, we dodged most of the unsettled weather thankfully. Fantastic turn out and congratulations to Ryan Murphy who put in a massive effort and won himself player of the week. Keep up the good work Boys.

U8 Girls

Well done to all our U8 girls for a huge effort on Sunday morning in their Go Games against Ballymac. Despite the wet start and very strong opposition spirits were high throughout. The girls done very well and looked to be enjoying the challenge.!! With numbers uneven some of our stronger girls had stepped up to U10’s which gave the younger girls lots more involvement and time on the ball which will bring them on ahead of some upcoming GoGames.

U9

St. Pats under 9s had a good lively session on Sunday morning. They practiced their kick passing and kicking for scores followed by a good competitive game. We play Cromane on Tuesday evening in the first round of the phase 2 games at 6.30 in Blennerville.

U10 Girls

On Sunday, the U10 Girls played their 1st game of the year against a very gallant and talented Ballymac team. We had home advantage and played very well despite the damp underfoot conditions. We had a few of our older u-8s who were excellent and special mention goes to Olivia who played with Ballymac and played too well for our liking!!

It was a great game, great skill and tenacity on show and the future of ladies’ football is bright with this bunch of brilliant and talented young ladies, and all parents should be very proud of them because we as coaches certainly are. Training continues next Sunday morning at 10.30.

U11

A torrential downpour delayed the start of our challenge game away to Ballymac last Monday evening, but it did nothing to dampen the spirits! Everyone played with serious commitment in very challenging conditions and there was plenty of pent-up energy expended.

We had much more pleasant conditions on Thursday evening in Blennerville, we welcomed Duagh. What an excellent turnout of players and the substitutes showed great patience and support for their teammates while waiting their chance to join the fray. Duagh were well organised and proved to be excellent opponents.

Both games were tough but fair and none of the players left anything on the field. Thanks as always to the parents who stayed to support the teams and create a great atmosphere for the boys.

There was no Sunday training due to the school hike and BBQ which lots of the boys enjoyed. We train again on Thursday at 6:30pm in Blennerville.

U12 Girls

The U12 Girls played round 2 of the county league away to Duagh last Thursday evening. It was a very exciting game right to the final whistle, and we were very unlucky not to come away with a victory!

On a very positive note, the referee came to us at half time to say well done on how far the girls have come in the last few months. He refereed our first game this year and he could not believe the improvement in the girls’ football skills and scoring in that short space of time.

It was lovely to hear, and we had to agree with him. Every girl has improved dramatically, and it was evident on Thursday. So well done girls it is not all about the winning! We will train this week on Wednesday from 5.30 to 6.30.

U13

Our lads trained twice last week on Tuesday and Thursday with the Tuesday session being remembered for the deluge of rain that fell during it!

However, it did not dampen the lad’s enthusiasm and a good week’s training was had. We did not train on Sunday due to the Blennerville School Hike and BBQ and also with some players representing Blennerville/Ballyard in the County Community Games Athletics championships in Castleisland.

Well done to Jace and Rian who both won gold and bronze medals respectively in their events. Training continues this week on the usual days and times.

U14 Girls

The U14 Girls had their first game in the county league last Sunday at home against Inbheir Sceine Gaels C. The girls were playing against the wind in the first half, they succeeded in many scoring opportunities, but the scores just did not go our way.

The girls improved in the second half but did not have enough time to catch up with our opponents. Next training is on Wednesday evening from 5.30 to 6.30. Our next game is against John Mitchels B. Details to be confirmed in the week.

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

.
THE VICTORIOUS TRALEE PARNELLS CAMOGIE TEAM AND MANAGEMENT THAT WON THE DIV 5 FEILE TITLE IN ORAN, CO ROSCOMMON LAST WEEKEND

On a beautiful day in Oran GAA club, Co. Roscommon last Saturday, Tralee Parnells Camogie club made history by winning the Division 5 Feile title.

Parnells were in a group with Padraig Pearses of Roscommon, Iniskeen of Monaghan and Éire Óg of Greystones, Co. Wicklow. Decisive victories over each of their group opponents led to a semi-final against St. Kevins of Louth.

As they had done in 2 of their 3 group matches, the Parnells defence kept the opposition scoreless, while their forwards did the job at the other end.

TRALEE PARNELLS U15 CAPTAIN ANNA CHUTE RECEIVING THE DIVISION 5 FEILE CUP FROM CONNACHT CAMOGIE PRESIDENT BRIAN MOLLOY

However, the girls were under no illusion that one major effort would be required to win the title and bring the cup back to Kerry. Their final opponents were Portumna of Galway, who had been very impressive in winning all their games on the other side of the draw.

Parnells played with the aid of a very strong breeze for the first half (of 12 minutes) and scored 3 very good points against a resolute Portumna defence. At the other end, as was the case in most of the matches, the defence stood firm and Portumna remained scoreless at half time.

With the girls out on their feet, there was a fear that a 3 point lead wasn’t going to be enough as Parnells turned to face the wind. Portumna themselves got 3 points with the aid of the breeze but Parnells managed to get 2 points of their own thanks to some fine attacking play.

As the time ticked down, with Portumna still 2 points down, they laid siege to the Parnells goal and went looking for the goal they needed. Despite a number of near misses and heroic defending, Parnells held out and when the final whistle blew, the girls sank to their knees with joy – they were Féile champions.

To victorious scenes, Connacht Camogie President Brian Molloy presented the Division 5 Cup to winning captain Anna Chute.

Congratulations to the team and coaches – Sinead, Natalie, David and Brian – for the effort they have put in over the last few of months.

Tralee Parnells Golf Classic

The club is running its inaugural golf classic on Friday July 21st in Beaufort Golf Club. All funds raised will go to completing works on our new Academy pitch in Pairc na Darach in Oakpark.

In 2022, Tralee Parnells was granted a 13 year licence for the use of the GAA pitch, Pairc na Darach, at the Tralee Sports Complex in Oakpark for their Academy players. In order to upgrade the pitch at Pairc na Darach to make it suitable for playing hurling and camogie, substantial investment is required – over €30,000, of which a substantial amount has already been invested by the club. New ball-stops have been erected, nets on the goalposts have been replaced, landscaping has been carried out and the pitch has been sanded, juvenile goalposts have been purchased. Some final groundwork is required so the young hurlers and camogie players can display their skills on a top quality playing surface in a safe environment.  The club hopes to have the facility ready for their Academy by July or early August.

Entry fee for a Team of 4 in the golf classic is €200. There are also tee and green sponsorship opportunities available, as well as sponsorship of prizes.  Please contact Agnes at 087-8377969 or any member of the Committee for further information.

The club is asking local businesses, parents and supporters of the club to come on board to make this fundraiser a success and to provide the best playing facilities for our young hurlers and camogie players.

The Credit Union Senior Football League

Division 1 Round 10

The penultimate round of the SFL Division 1 saw Ballymacelligott host Gneeveguilla fighting to avoid relegation. And Gneeveguilla fought like tigers from the throw in to the final kick of the ball.  This was the difference. It made a difference, They won the game.

From the get off this was a game that was hard to take one’s eyes off as it was like two machine guns firing non-stop on all cylinders. In the first minute John O’Leary opened the score for Gneeveguilla with a goal and Pa Brosnan added a point shortly after.

Gneeveguilla were attacking again when Dan Shea stole the ball and this resulted in a Ballymac point from a free from Aidan Breen. A repeat performance from Dan Shea saw him run the length of the field with a ball passing to Aidan Breen who scored a point and within two minutes he had scored another.

Jack Cremin replied with a goal after a lightening run. The next score was a goal from Darragh Regan for Ballymac.

With fifteen minutes on the clock Ballymac 1-03 Gneeveguilla 2-01.

Another good cut off by Dan Shea lead to a point from Vinny Horan, Gneeveguilla replied from the boot of Jack Cremin. Gneeveguilla hit the Ballymac crossbar before Padraig Doyle added another point for them. A goal from Donal Daly brought the sides level 2-04 apiece.

Three more points from Gneeveguilla, two from Jack Cremin and a free taken by John O’Leary gave Gneeveguilla the lead with 29 minutes played. Dan Shea and Vinny Horan scored for Ballymac and this left the half time score Ballymac 2-06 Gneeveguilla 2-07.

The second half was well matched and with fifteen minutes gone the game was 2-10 each. Donal Daly then got a point for the home side, Gneeveguilla got a goal disallowed for a square ball.

With ten minutes left Gneeveguilla found energy and determination and had scored a goal and two points within five minutes . Just before the final whistle they added a point leaving the final score: Ballymac 2-12 to Gneeveguilla 3-12.

Up until the last ten minutes of this game our team played very well with some great individual displays from Dan Shea and Mike Sweeney in the backs and Darragh Regan, Vinny Horan and Donal Daly in the forwards.

With six of our regular players missing on the night the lads who came on did well and credit to them for the performance against a very determined Gneeveguiila side.

Team: Christy Leen, Michael Sweeney, Dan O’Shea (0-2), Diarmuid Galvin, Josh O’Keeffe, Darragh Sweeney, Adam Kelly, Aidan Breen (0-3), Michéal Reidy, Michael Herlihy, Donal Daly (1-3), Adam Sheehy, Darragh Regan (1-2), Vinny Horan (0-2) (Captain) and Brian Lonergan.

Substitutes used on the night: Ciaran Brosnan, Conor Brick, Barry Lyons, Skye Lynch, Cian Godley and Andy Rogers.

Senior men faced Dromid away in the next round of  the league on Saturday evening . Mitchels had the wind in the first half and tallied a score of 1-03 only 14 mins in with Dromid kicking their first in the 15th minute followed by another point by Mitchels to bring the score line to 1-04 to 0-01.

Dromid found it really difficult in the first half and by half time Mitchels had the score board  going with a score of 2-10 to 0-03 points in favour of the visitors.

In the second half Dromid got back two points to a very high lead to Mitchels, but then another goal for mitchels now bringing the score to 3-13 to 0-05 points only 9 minutes into the second half.

Dromid scored a goal of their own a much needed score but Dromid struggled to hold off the visitors and the seniors kicked on to win by a score line of 3-18 to 1-7.

Our U13 Gold team played in the Division 14 county Final last Wednesday in Blennerville against NaGael, our lads hit the ground running and with excellent scores from the forwards we took an early lead.

The Midfield were well on top and never gave NaGael room to breath, our backs were not to be out done by the other two lines, and only allowed one score from NaGael in the opening half, taking a healthy lead into the break.

The boys never took their foot off the gas and we continued our dominance into the second half with a great contribution from some of our U11’s.

The full-time score was 3:13 to 1:8 when the ref blew the final whistle, and we took the trophy back to Ballyseedy, where our boys celebrated with a well-earned pizza, compliments of the club.

Kerry FC To Enter Team Into EA Sports Women’s Under 17 League Of Ireland Academy

.

KERRY Football Club has announced that the club will be entering a women’s team into the EA Sports Women’s Under 17 League of Ireland Academy from the 2024 season onwards.

Following confirmation from the League of Ireland organisers, Kerry Football Club will now be represented in the women’s leagues for the first time.

The step into the Women’s EA Sports Under 17 LOI Academy allows for the long term plan in Kerry to reach senior women’s football in the League of Ireland.

Continued below…

.

Speaking on the announcement, Kerry FC General Manager Sean O Keeffe said; “It gives me a great sense of pride following the confirmation from the FAI that we will be included in the EA Sports Women’s U17 LOI Academy from the 2024 season onwards”

Sean added; “We have seen how the men’s team has taken off this year but you have to remember how many years of hard work at Academy level that went into making the step up to senior. I hope that with the introduction of the U17 Women’s team, the same process can be put in to eventually see women’s senior football in the county before long.”

Kerry FC Head of Academy Damian Locke said; “I’m delighted to have our application into the 2024 WU17 LOI Academy accepted. We would like to thank the FAI for their guidance and assistance during the process. We are really looking forward to adding our first women’s team to our club.

“There is great work being done both within grassroots clubs and at the FAI Centre of Excellence over the past number of years. Providing this platform for girls to have equal opportunity as our Academy boys has been a priority of the club since we joined the League of Ireland. It’s a very exciting time for women’s football in our county as it’s been the common practice for girls from Kerry to travel around the country to play in the Women’s League of Ireland over recent years but that will no longer be required.”

Darren Aherne, FAI Regional High Performance Coach said; “Absolutely delighted to see Kerry FC entering the u17 girls national league. It’s another step in the female player pathway being put in place for every female player from the region. The dream is to have every step of the player pathway in place for players from Kerry and the region in due course.”

Darren added; “Well done to everyone from Kerry FC for taking this decision and  I am really looking forward to seeing the positive effects it will have on the girls game locally.”

Tralee Classed As ‘Moderately Littered’ In Latest IBAL Report

.

TRALEE has lost its Clean To European Norms’ status in the latest IBAL Anti-Litter League, Survey.

Tralee is now place 29th out of the 40 towns / cities surveyed and is classed as ‘Moderately Littered’ in the An Taisce report. Killarney is place 20th in the table and is ‘Clean To European Norms.

The following is the report from An Taisce which states the presence of a couple of seriously littered sites has prevented Tralee having a higher ranking.

These were at Tralee Train Station and Market Street. Top ranking sites included a couple of approach routes, Main Street / The Mall (excellent streetscape) and Tralee Town Park described as a wonderful park environment with many different elements within.

Continued below…

.

N21 Approach Road: Grade A. A very clean and freshly presented route into Tralee, creating a positive first impression of the town. The greenery on the roundabout is a lovely feature.

R875 Approach: Grade B. (from McDonald’s to hospital entrance). There was a very definite litter presence along this route, all manner of food related litter, cigarette butts and obvious vaping devices. The area close to the car wash premises wasn’t littered but the area at DJ Fitzgerald was. Grass / flower areas were poorly presented and maintained – it would seem that cars parking on the grass is causing muddy grass area.

Tralee Train Station: Grade C+. On first impression, all appeared in good order at the train station. The main entrance area and the centre of the car park clean but what really brought down the litter grade were the litter accumulations along the perimeter wall / base of shrubbery – the appearance was of an area which lacked a thorough cleaning in some considerable time. As well as a variety of food related items, there were cigarette butts and alcohol cans / bottles. Hopefully, once the construction work is complete that it will be combined with a big clean-up job.

North Circular Road: Grade B. (from Jackie Power Roundabout to junction with Rock Street). The most obvious litter items along this mixed-use road was cigarette butts, with lower levels of chewing gum and sweet wrapper. The butts were most pronounced on the side of the road with the houses, where one resident was observed sweeping up directly outside her house. The area outside Nolan’s was spotless, not so outside Dunnes Stores. The provision of litter awareness notices / cigarette butt notices could make a big difference here.

Caherslee Approach Road: Grade A. A freshly presented route with road surface / markings / signage in good order. There was a complete absence of litter throughout the area surveyed.

.

Market Street: Grade C+. This was a mixed site in that some areas were cleaner then previous IBAL survey (e.g., the accumulated litter has been removed from the wire mesh) but there is a very heavy vaping related litter presence, particularly at the laneway next to Sullivans Pharmacy and cigarette butts were very obvious in the old cable lock next to Ladbrokes.

Recycle Facility at SuperValu: Grade B. The overall impression was generally a much better one than some previous IBAL surveys, particularly at the bottle bank area. This time around, it was the area surrounding the Kerry Hospice Clothes Bank which brought down the litter grade.

Tralee Town Park: Grade A. A wonderful town park environment which wasn’t just very good with regard to litter but attractively presented and maintained. Some parts of the park were in a more ‘natural’ state, as is increasingly seen in park environments throughout the country.

Main Street / The Mall: Grade A. The streetscape along the Main Street was excellent – attractive paving, wooden seating, large planter boxes, street-lamps, silver bollards etc. This area was very much deserving of the top litter grade.

Tralee Food Court: Grade B. A definitely littered site, unsurprisingly the most obvious litter was fast- food related, with lower levels of a wide variety of other food related items, some promotional flyers, plastic ties and face-masks. The bins at the back were overflowing with crows further contributing to the issue and there was litter in the shrubs.

.
Vive La France! Kerry Airport CEO John Mulhern is excited to welcome passengers when French Airline Chalair’s flights from Quimper and Brest next Saturday. Photo By : Domnick Walsh © Eye Focus LTD.

KERRY Airport is preparing to offer a customary ‘céad míle fáilte’ to the passengers arriving to the county on board the inaugural Chalair flight from Brittany, France next weekend.

The aircraft will touch down at 9.20am on Saturday, July 1 with visitors from Quimper and Brest while the first outbound passengers will depart from Kerry just before 10am on the same day.

The seasonal summer service will operate every Saturday with a flight time of less than 1 hour 40 minutes from Kerry to France on board a 70-seat ATR 72 aircraft.

Continued below…

.

The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said, “Our summer schedule has been very successful so far and the introduction of this new seasonal service to France is a welcome addition to our choice of destinations from Kerry. We are looking forward to welcoming the first French passengers to Kerry on Saturday morning. Ultimately, their arrival and those who will follow over the coming weeks, will boost the local economy during the peak tourism season.”

Lixnaw were comfortable all through and had eight different scorers. Their goals came from Mikey Kelliher, Ricky Heffernan and Colin Sheehy.

Causeway 3-16

St. Brendan’s 0-14

Both games in the Garveys Supervalu Kerry Hurling championship today finished with the same scoreline.

St Brendan’s operated for most of the second half with 14 men but basic errors and poor decision making was more the cause of their defeat than the loss of a player.

Causeway increased their intensity from their defeat to Kilmoyley and were much more economical in front of goal reducing their wide count to ten today.

The Causeway goal scorers were Joe Diggins, Sean Leahy and Colum Harty. The Colum Harty goal was gifted to him by a cross field ball straight to his hand from a St Brendan’s defender and to compound the error, the St Brendan’s keeper had moved out field to present himself for a pass leaving Harty with an empty net to strike the ball into.

St Brendan’s will now face Kilmoyley next weekend, they will need a big win to progress.

KERRY FC will play a charity match in Killarney to honour the memory of one of the greatest soccer players to ever play the game in Kerry.

Ten years have now elapsed since the passing of Killarney Celtic FC and Kerry Oscar Traynor Cup legend John Doyle who fought a long battle with serious illness with great bravery and spirit.

To mark the anniversary, a sporting event has been arranged with his beloved Killarney Celtic taking on the might of League of Ireland side Kerry FC with all proceeds from the glamour tie going to Comfort for Chemo Kerry.

Billy Dennehy’s side will take on the domestic kingpins of Kerry soccer with Celtic currently on a high after completing an unprecedented five Kerry league and cup doubles in a row.

Several of the marquee names in Kerry soccer will take to the field at Celtic Park in Killarney on Wednesday, July 26 with the kick-off timed for 7.30pm.

The game will be played on the night after John’s 10th anniversary and, poignantly, the action will take place in front of the John Doyle Stand which the club dedicated to the memory of one of the greatest and most versatile players to ever lace a pair of boots.

A solid all-round performer, John was also a very accomplished Gaelic footballer with Spa and he won an All-Ireland Hogan Cup medal with St Brendan’s College in 1992.

Tickets for the big game are priced at €10 and €5 for under 16s and all proceeds will go to Comfort for Chemo Kerry which is a cause very close to the hearts of all those who have embarked on cancer journeys.

There will be a novel auction at half-time and the star lots will include gear donated by Kerry GAA stars David and Paudie Clifford – both also accomplished soccer players – a Kerry jersey signed and donated by the great Colm Cooper, a jersey donated by former Manchester United star and current Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster and other wonderful items.

Guests of honour at the game will be John’s wife, Lynda, daughter Ruth and members of the extended Doyle family as well as many former team-mates and friends who remember a very fine gentleman and a brilliant sportsman.

The memorial game, sponsored by Killarney Kenmare and Caherciveen Credit Union, the Sheehan Group and Utiliity Plus, is being organised by a committee involving John’s great friends, spearheaded by Karl McMahon, and including Killarney Celtic Chairman Tim Jones and club stalwarts Niall O’Callaghan, Noel Brosnan and Tom Meehan.

Tickets are available from Tim Jones Butchers, the Fáilte Hotel, Killarney Credit
Union and several other outlets as well as from any of the organising committee.
