KERRY County Council is reminding communities across the county that funding is available under the Community Climate Action Programme for 2024.
Funding of over €600,000 has been provided for projects in Kerry which will help to build low-carbon and sustainable communities.
The goal of the programme, which is led by the Department of the Environment, is to support community-based initiatives which contribute to achieving Ireland’s national climate action and energy targets and which tackle climate action at a local level.
Continued below…
The fund is divided into two strands:
Strand-1 – Action: Building Low Carbon Communities: Kerry County Council have been given an allocation of €663,000 for projects regarding climate action. Under this scheme, communities will partner with Kerry County Council to carry out projects that will have a direct and positive impact on climate change.
Strand 1a – Shared Island Community Climate Action: This strand enables communities to carry out a cross-border project in partnership with a community in Northern Ireland.
Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jim Finucane, said: “Climate action and building sustainable communities requires the involvement and cooperation of everyone. This funding will help to deliver tangible community-led projects which can contribute to supporting our collective ambitions to move towards a low-carbon economy and to achieve climate action targets. I would encourage community groups to apply,” he said.
Community groups which are not-for-profit and are registered with the Kerry Participation Network are eligible to apply and full details are available on the Kerry County Council website or by email from richard.curtin@kerrycoco.ie.
The funding received by a Community Organisation will depend on the size of a project:
• Small scale projects will be granted, less than €20,000
• Medium scale projects will be granted, €21,000 to €50,000
• Large scale projects will be granted, €51,000 to €100,000

Intercounty Grade D, F & H
3 teams from Kerry had an early rise Sunday morning as they travelled to Waterford to take part in their respective Munster Intercounty graded competitions. The Kerry grade F and H teams played in the new SETU arena while the Ds travelled to Cappoquin for their day out.
The Kerry Grade D team emerged victorious after defeating Tipperary 9-0 and then coming up against a very strong Waterford team where it came down to the very last game which was 3rd mixed.
Kelvin McNally and Helen Browne played a brilliant game which went all the way to 3 sets after the Kerry pair won the second 26-24 and the 3rd 21-13. The team will now go forward and represent Kerry and Munster in the All Ireland later in the season.
The grade F team had a tough group in which they played Cork and Clare. They were beaten by a strong Cork team in the first game 7 matches to 2 but were in a much more tight affair against Clare where Clare just scraped it 5 games to 4.
There were some close games played here with 2 of the 5 games Kerry lost going to 3 sets in very close games. But on the day it was Clare and Cork that emerged from the group.
The Grade H team also played in the new SETU arena where they had both Cork and Limerick. In the first game they 2 were beaten by a string well playing Cork team by 7 games to 2. In the second game, Kerry played really well and beat Limerick 5 games to 4. This them put them in the mix to go through but unfortunately on counting the games back Kerry only won 7 games between the 2 matches where as Cork and Limerick had 10 each and so they went through.
Kerry Juvenile Doubles Championships
The Kerry Juvenile Championships continued today in Killarney with the girls’ and boys’ doubles. While players from Annauscaul, Moyvane, Castleisland, and Tralee contested finals, it was a sea of green from Listowel that once again swept all before them.
They contested all eight finals and won all eight, a truly phenomenal achievement. Many thanks again to Suzanne and Mary for taking the entries and making the draws; club helpers and Tom Bradley for the photos.

Scór: Last Friday night saw a group of Na Gaeil supporters make their way to the Community Hall in Milltown for the Scór na nÓg Co final. Nótaí na mBan:
Do you ever wonder why girls drop out of sport at such an early age? …Orlagh Farmer, Cork senior ladies footballer for her PHD looked into the reasons why through the Gaelic4Girls programme.
Her research found that girls wanted to participate because of the enjoyment of it and not so much the winning aspect. She also found out that friends have a major influence on whether they will participate in sport or not.
In our club we will prioritize the experience and enjoyment over winning. We will always promote participation and help with the development of skills. Girls will have fun.
We are a welcoming club. For more details on training please contact Shirley ( 086) 8713552.

U12 TEAM 2023
A fantastic celebration took place in our club’s bistro on Tuesday , marking our U12 footballers participation in 2023 development. It was an evening to recognise how strong team and friendship bonds are, on and off the pitch and the improvement in everyones’ skills.
Our inspiring speaker Declan Quill, joint Kerry LGFA manager presented everyone with medals and shared some insights into ladies football and told us that it is the fastest growing sport in Europe. A role model for so many of our players in our ‘One Club ‘ model, Declan continues to inspire as he gives back to the sport he loves for both girls and boys.
Thanks to our club chairman Oliver Molloy for welcoming everyone and for encouraging the girls to keep up their great work.
Each player was given a beautiful wooden plaque for their dedication to training and fun games throughout the year.
They were then treated to food while their families had light refreshments, cake and biscuits. Many thanks to Liz and Sinéad for helping out.
Well done to the U12 team of 2023!

St. Brendan’s Basketball Club celebrated its 30th Anniversary in style on Sunday night with a social gathering at Molly J’s at the Benners Hotel in Tralee.
Founding members, players, coaches, committee members and friends of the club were in attendance to join in the celebrations for the club’s milestone anniversary.
The club hosted a Senior Mens and Womens tournament on Saturday and Sunday and many of the players from other clubs including St. Paul’s Killarney, St. Mary’s Castleisland and Tralee Titans joined in the celebrations as well as many of the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors squad.
Continued below…
Established in 1994, St Brendan’s Basketball Club was founded by a committee at a meeting in Charles & Marie O’Sullivan’s house in Kevin Barry’s Villas in February 1994.
The meeting was attended by Charles O’Sullivan, Marie O’Sullivan, Tania O’Sullivan, Denis Costelloe, Anthony O’Brien, Noel McCoy and the late Bruddy Burrows.
The aims and objectives of the club were clear from the outset; to promote and develop the game of basketball in Tralee and to nurture talent of all ages to produce teams that could compete in local and national competition.
Club founder Charles O’Sullivan referred to setting up the club as being akin to embarking on a voyage and so it was entirely appropriate that the club be named after St. Brendan.
The club was originally set up to cater for boys in the Tralee area and has grown enormously since then.
It now caters for boys and girls at all underage levels from under 10 to under 20. It also has teams competing at Senior men and Senior ladies level.
The club plans to continue to celebrate the 30th Anniversary into the months of March and April with a series of other basketball tournaments at underage level.
The schedule is as follows in date order: Boys U14s on the 24th February, Boys U17s on the 2nd March, Girls U12s on the 10th March, Boys U12s on the 16th March, Girls U10s on the 23rd March, Boys U12s on the 24th March and Girls U14s on the 6th April.
A number of awards were presented on the night including honorary life membership and commemorative trophies to the founding committee of the club; Charles O’Sullivan, Marie O’Sullivan, Denis Costelloe, Noel McCoy, Tania O’Sullivan, Anthony O’Brien, accepted by his daughter Antoinette and the late Bruddy Burrows, accepted by his son Alan.

Dan Kearney reports on Kerry’s win over Cork in Tralee on Monday…
Kerry 2-14
Cork 0-7
Hannah O’ Donoghue struck for 1-3 as Kerry defeated Cork by thirteen points at Austin Stack Park in the third round of the Lidl National Football League Division 1.
O’Donoghue was on fire for the Kingdom in a forward line where Danielle O’Leary came on in the 23rd minute and struck for a haul of 1-2.
A slow start to the game saw the sides level at 0-2 apiece after 10 minutes thanks to two Katie Quirke frees for Cork and a Niamh Carmody placed ball for Kerry, followed by a lovely score from O’Donoghue.

Laura O’Mahony put Cork into a 0-3 to 0-2 lead in the 14th minutes but it was to prove to be the Rebels last score of the half as Kerry, playing with a very strong wind, fired off the next five scores in a row.
Carmody dusted herself down to kick a free from the edge of the D following a 60-metre run at the heart of the Cork defence to level matters and as the home side put a squeeze on the Cork kick out, Emma Dineen punished the visitors with a lovely score.
Kerry turned over once again from Sarah Murphy’s kickout and Carmody popped over the free once more after Aishling O’Connell was fouled to push Kerry 0-5 to 0-3 ahead.
Cork were under all kinds of pressure as they tried to get the ball into scoring positions and in the 24th minute Amy Harrington fed Niamh Ní Chonchúir to push Kerry three points to the good.
The final point of the half fell to O’Donoghue and Kerry took a 0-7 to 0-3 lead in at the half time break despite shooting six wides. But Cork wouldn’t have been too disappointed as they had the advantage of the strong wind for the second half.
Dineen and Quirke traded scores at the start of the second half but substitute O’Leary pushed Kerry five ahead once again in the 35th minute after a flowing move involving Cait Lynch and Lorraine Scanlon.

Scanlon got in on the act with a trademark around the corner score to push Kerry 0-10 to 0-5 ahead in the 43rd minute. Cork then had a massive body blow when Shauna Cronin received a yellow card, and 10 minutes in the bin, after 47 minutes.
Kerry powered on from there for their third victory of the campaign with O’Donoghue striking for opening goal in the 55th minute and O’Leary wrapped it up at the death with a low finish to the corner.
