Water Supply May Not Return To Some Parts Of Tralee Until Later Tonight

.

SOME parts of Tralee are experiencing breaks to the water supply today which may not be restored in some areas until later tonight.

Repairs to a burst water main are causing supply disruptions to Sundays Well, Cuil Feirne, Caherslee, Mounthawk, Ballyroe, Fenit Road, The Spa, Clogherbrien, Strand Street, The Kerries, Ballyrickard, Spa Road, Lohercannon, Kerins Park, Blennerville, Curraheen, Annagh, Tralee and surrounding areas.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, works have an estimated completion time of 10pm tonight. Uisce Éireann say every effort is being made to maintain water supply to as many customers as possible.

Following repair works, it typically takes two to three hours for normal supply to fully restore to all areas as the water refills the network, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network. To check for updates on the Uisce Éireann website click here.

CBS The Green To Play Mercy Mounthawk In All-Tralee Corn Uí Mhuirí Final

.

WINS by CBS Tralee and Mercy Mounthawk in their semi-finals today has set up a mouth-watering all Tralee Corn Uí Mhuirí Munster Schools football final.

CBS beat Patrician Mallow by 2-12 to 0-7, while Mercy Mounthawk defeated St Brendan’s of Killarney by 2-14 to 0-7. The game is scheduled to be played on Saturday, February 10 in an occasion sure to draw a huge crowd.

St Brendan’s opened the scoring against Mercy Mounthawk at the game played in Austin Stack Park this afternoon, but the Tralee men sped off into the lead with a flurry of score and when they goaled on 24 minutes they were 1-9 to 0-1 ahead.

Continued below…

.

By half-time they were 1-11 to 0-2 ahead and looking sure to advance. St Brendan’s tried to come back in the second period but Mercy Mounthawk were not to be denied.

Over in Killarney, Tralee CBS powered their way to another final with an impressive display. The Cork side stayed in touch and after 20 minutes trailed by just three points (0-5 to 0-2).

However a CBS goal on 23 minutes put daylight between the sides and they went in at the break leading by six (1-7 to 0-4).

The Tralee lads kept Patrician at bay in the second half and when they got a second goal with ten minutes to go they sealed their place in the decider, pulling away for a 2-12 to 0-7 win.

Congratulations to both Tralee teams and best of luck in the final.

Over 350 Patients Waiting On Trolleys At UHK During January

.

THERE were 355 patients waiting on trolleys in University Hospital Kerry during the month of January.

This was a decrease of 56 on the same month in 2023. Nationally, over 12,132 patients, including 278 children went without a hospital bed this January according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

Speaking about the national figures, INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “Another January has passed with hospital overcrowding remaining a serious problem in Irish hospitals. There were only three instances this month where less than 500 people were waiting on trolleys, chairs or other inappropriate bed spaces.

Continued below…

.

“Hundreds of people are sick enough to be admitted to hospital each day but there is no bed for them. Some of the care environments are totally inappropriate, in some instances the care is provided on chairs.

“It is clear that capacity in the health system isn’t sufficient. We have not seen a significant drop in the number of patients on trolleys. We need more beds and we need more patient-facing staff. The HSE must agree a realistic workforce plan which provides for sufficient nurses and midwives to be employed to provide safe care and plan for more beds to open.

“Patient safety is of the utmost importance to our members, they want to be in a position to provide safe and timely care. It is the view of INMO members that hospital overcrowding has not improved. On each hospital site the occupancy rate is above 83% which means that the provision of safe care is compromised.”

Unfortunately, the gaiscígh shinsearacha were unable to get over the line on the astro turf against a fine Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh opposition. Ní hé sin le rá nach raibh eachtra iontach nó dhó le feiceáil sa chluiche ó Rory Ó Loinsigh, Luke agus Gavin Ó Cathasaigh agus a gcairde, chomh maith le scóranna iontach ó Darren Ó Briain, cúl den ard-scoth ó Gavin Ó Caoimh, sár-thaispeántas ó Dan Ó Maoldomhnaigh, agus cúpla ruathar iontach ó Luke Ó Cathasaigh. Tá foireann láidir fós ann don bhliain seo chugann agus, le cúnamh Dé, beidh a bhfeachtas faoi stiúir an Mháistir Uí Mhurchú i 2024/25 agus beidh sé chomh rathúil céanna is a bhí cluichí na bliana seo! SPORTS’ NEWS: Sport’s news on our televisions (RTÉ tv) on Saturday night last showed a few fine snippets from our Division 1 football games, including the Kerry/Derry game. Interestingly, no snippets from our Division 2 games were shown (Tipp, Longford, Carlow, etc) and yet snippets from Division 2 club games (i gcód eile) in GB were shown (as well as Division 1 matches)! Could one question the logic of such broadcasting? Should that time on air not be given to Gaelic football teams (or other Irish sports) in Ireland. If time-on-air was a problem, why ‘cut’ Irish athletes? Should we, the GAA, ask questions on the matter?

KERRY: Sympathies to our county seniors who were pipped by Doire Cholmcille. ‘Well done’ to Joseph Ó Conchúir and Dylan Ó Cathasaigh (what a great goal he scored!) who performed excellently. Go n-éirí go geal leo v Muimhneachán.

Kerry Man Collects His €1m National Lottery Winnings

.

A KERRY man was at National Lottery Headquarters today to collect his €1m winnings after officially becoming the very first National Lottery millionaire in the Daily Million draw on Tuesday, January 23.

The delighted Kerry player who won the life-changing prize with a ticket he purchased online told of his shock when he received an email to tell him that he had won the €1 million prize.

He said: “It was Tuesday night, so I actually played a EuroMillions ticket online. At around half eight that night, I received an email from the lottery to tell me that I’d won €4 in the EuroMillions draw.”

Continued below…

.

“It was sitting there in the account so I thought I might as well buy a ticket for the Daily Million draw on the same night. Shortly after that draw at 9pm, I got another email from the Lottery but this time there was something different about it.

“It didn’t tell me how much I’d won but it told me that I’d won big. I logged into my account, half expecting to see I’d won another €4, and I could never have prepared myself for the fright that I got when I seen that there was a €1 million prize on my ticket. It was such an incredible feeling.”

“I’ve managed to get over the initial shock of becoming a millionaire and of course I’ve also had to convince my family that this really happened! We will take some time out before we decide what to do with the money, but we’ll be sensible. We want to pay off our mortgage and some bills first but after that, we’ll focus on looking after family members as much as we can,” he said.

REPORT: Warriors U20s Shoot Down Neptune To Set Up Showdown With Ballincollig

.

Alan Cantwell reports on the Mens U20 National League – Round 4 game in Cork on Sunday…

Tralee Warriors 103

Neptune 83

The Garveys Tralee Warriors U20 squad.

TRALEE Warriors overcame a determined challenge to secure a 103-83 win over Neptune at the Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday evening.

The win makes it three wins from four for the defending champions and sets up a Group 1 decider against the unbeaten Ballincollig at the MTU Arena in Cork on 17th February.

The Warriors made a bright start with Eddie Sheehy and Eoin Creedon opening their respective accounts but Neptune replied and led 11-6 after Dylan O’Rourke and Ciaran Duffy fired down three pointers either side of scores from Martin Khidiri and Emmet Fitzgerald.

Continued below…

.

Warriors took control of the exchanges with Josh Osayanrhion and Brian O’Leary combining from inside and outside to give the hosts take back the lead.

An exchange of major scores late on from Sheehy and Duffy saw the Warriors take a 23-17 advantage into the second quarter.

The Warriors lit up in the second after Khidiri and Fitzgerald added for Neptune to blitz the Leesiders with a catalogue of scores that built a potentially game-winning lead.

Evan Boyle fired down a trademark three and Olaf Michalczuk followed suit either side of baskets from Creedon with two, Osayanrhion with three and Eddie Sheehy and with three minutes to half time the Warriors led 46-21.

Khidiri stopped the rot with a basket for the visitors and Duffy hit his third three but Michalczuk was again in range from distance and two from Sheehy and Donal O’Sullivan’s first of the night kept the Warriors run going.

David Bongcayao knocked down a three to edge Neptune closer but Michalczuk had the last word with a mid range effort to give the Warriors a 57-35 lead at half time.

Neptune needed a fast start to the second half but it was Warriors through Sheehy with a three that sparked another scoring blitz and by the time he hit his second major of the quarter the hosts led by 28.

Michalczuk and Osayanrhion continued to torment the Neptune rearguard as they pushed the lead out to 75-47.

To their credit Neptune rallied and halved the lead by the end of the quarter. Dylan O’Rourke added a nine point volley and a double from Duffy and another good score from Khidiri saw the sides to the final short break with the Warriors lead cut to 77-62.

Like the first quarter Eoin Creedon and Eddie Sheehy added the first two scores for the Warriors but Neptune’s resurgence continued with Khidiri with one combining with O’Rourke with a quick fire seven points and when Aodhan Cooke added his first of the night the Warriors advantage was down to 82-73.

However the Warriors regrouped and launched another salvo to push the lead back out to the comfort zone with Eddie Sheehy and Eoin Creedon laying up and Olaf Michalczuk hitting a belter from well beyond the arc.

Neptune fought right the way to the final buzzer and Khidiri and O’Rourke continued to find the Warriors basket but it was too little too late because at the other end the outstanding Sheehy and the dynamic Creedon found gaps in the paint to drive to the board for the scores that sealed the deal at 103-83.

The win sets up a showdown with Ballincollig at 1.00pm on Saturday 17th February as part of a double header with the Super League Warriors who take on Irish Guide Dogs Ballincollig at 4.00pm.

Scorers:
Tralee Warriors: Eddie Sheehy 30, Olaf Michalczuk 24, Josh Osayanrhion 17
Neptune: Martin Khidiri 29, Dylan O’Rourke 26, Ciaran Duffy 13

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.

Though still in January it certainly has been a very busy and hectic week of activity here in Strand Road.

Over the past week, various groups of people have been working tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of our 10k and 5k fun run, others have been fully immersed in the Last Man Standing fundraiser whilst our new chairman ( Oliver Molloy) and his committee have been meeting to plan for the year ahead, both  on an off the pitch.

Setting off on the Kerins O’Rahillys 5k/10k Run on Sunday morning. Photo by Dermot Crean

10k run:

The ever popular 10K & 5k fun run took place on Sunday and despite the inclement weather there was a very strong turnout with in excess of 300 people participating.

To host such an event takes a lot of planning, organization and hard work and we are indebted to the likes of Frank O’Connor ( Tiler), Caitriona O’Sullivan and Tony Corridon for their efforts in  ensuring the race runs as smoothly as possible.

The race is now a permanent fixture on the calendar for 10k runners with people coming from Limerick, Tipperary and Cork to take part.

Kerry Cancer Support Services were a worthy beneficiary this year.

For the record, Oisin Spillane was the first man home with Margaret Foley being the first woman to pass the line.

Team prizes went to the mens team of Diomac and the womens compilation from Gneegeguilla.

Last Man Standing:

The LMS fundraiser closed on Saturday afternoon in advance of the opening rounds of the national league and once again it has proven to be a major success.

The initiative, driven by our former bainisteoir John O’Connor and supported by the Finance and Development committee, raised a significant sum to cover the senior team’s costs for the coming year and it was great to see the passion and commitment of the team as they sold cards for the past two weeks.

The losses incurred by both Kerry & Dublin on Saturday evening mean many participants fell at the first hurdle but many more will be still standing as we head to week 2 next week.

Our thanks to Tom Hoare for his technological expertise in collating the entries – weekly updates will be available on our Facebook pages as the weeks progress.

Lotto:

The lotto jackpot is now €10,700 with great interest weekly in this massive prize. We have to go back to the summer of ‘22 for the last winner and despite many match 3s,  a winning ticket remains elusive.

Remember, every ticket purchased not only gives you a chance to win but also supports our club’s activities and initiatives. We thank you for your continued support and participation.

Tickets available at the Klub, Betty’s Bar, Rock St PO and Jimmy’s – we have seen a huge surge in our online entries with participants able to play from the comfort of their own home – you can play too by logging on the following link:

https://play.clubforce.com/play_newa.asp?ll_id=328#Anchor

PHOTOS/REPORT: Warriors Overpowered By Éanna As Focus Turns To Killorglin Clash

Alan Cantwell reports on the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League 2023/2024 – Round 13 game in Dublin at the weekend…

Griffith College Éanna 89

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 75

For the second season running Garvey’s Tralee Warriors came away from Colaiste Éanna on the wrong side of the scoreline as they went down 89-75 to Griffith College Éanna on Saturday night.

The Warriors were brave throughout but the absence of both Kieran Donaghy and Ryan Leonard told in the end and despite an incredible 16 unanswered points in the second quarter the Warriors eventually succumbed to the Dublin side by 14.

However with EJ Sligo AllStars win over Ballincollig, the Warriors remain on top of the Southern Conference going into the must win local derby against Killorglin next Saturday.

Continued below…

.

The sides traded scores early with Matthew McLain and Stefan Desnica on the mark for Éanna but a major score from Daniel Jokubaitis opened the Warriors account and when Jarvis Doles landed his first basket the visitors briefly led.

Kristian Andabaka and Sean Jenkins were both in range from distance for Éanna and despite Jokubaitis and Doles being on the mark the hosts were 14-9 up midway through the first.

It got better for Éanna with Josh Wilson and James Gormley combining for 13 points they pushed their lead out to 14. A three from Quigley and a late effort from Rap Buivydas cut the gap but Éanna still led 27-19 at the end of the first.

The Warriors came out of the short break like a team inspired and went on a 16 point run that saw them turn the contest around to lead by 35-27 half way through the second quarter.

The scores simply rained down with Cian Sullivan, Daniel Jokubaitis and Rap Buivydas on the mark with a double each, Caleb Jordan with a three and the Warriors defending as if their lives depended on it, Éanna simply could not cope with the onslaught.

.

However, if the first five minutes of the quarter belonged to the Tralee side, the second five minutes belonged to the hosts as they stemmed the tide and hit back with a 10 point run of their own through Sellers, Wilson and Desnica to briefly take the lead again.

However with the last action of the half Jarvis Doles made no mistake from the line to edge the Warriors 39-37 ahead at the long break.

Into the third and Doles was again on the mark and Darragh O’Hanlon landed a comeback three pointer but the Warriors were finding it that bit more difficult to find their scores and the hosts took the early initiative with baskets from James Gormley with two, Desnica and a dagger three from Neil Lynch the hosts moved 50-44 ahead.

The Warriors were now scrambling but continued to come up with the scores to keep them in the contest. Olaf Michalczuk made an instant impact off the bench with a score and when Jordan did likewise the gap was down to a single point.

However the home side pushed ahead again with a three from Romann Nelson followed by scores from McLain and Wilson.

The Warriors kept their hopes of a road win alive with a dunk from Sullivan followed by a mid-range effort from Jordan and Quigley’s second three of the night left just three between the teams 59-56 at three quarter time.

Quigley hit his third three with the first play of the final quarter but Wilson replied in kind for Éanna before Doles and Jordan added to leave just a point between the sides again.

However that was as good as it got for the Warriors as the hosts launched a push for home with Nelson, Desnica and McLain shooting the next 12 points without reply to lead 76-64 before Nelson hit another corner three to edge Éanna further ahead.

Cian Sullivan’s towering effort lands a score. Photo by Liam Ryan

The Warriors response was too little too late with Jordan and Doles chipping away at the sizable lead but even a three from Jokubaitis failed to spark a final flourish.

It was to be his last act of the game as two technicals in quick succession ended his night before Éanna sub Dean Kiernan came on to shoot the insurance scores from the line to see out an 89-75 win in the end.

Scorers:

Griffith College Éanna: Josh Wilson 18, Stefan Desnica 17, James Gormley 14

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Jarvis Doles 18, Eoin Quigley 13, Cian Sullivan 13, Daniel Jokubaitis 12

• Next up for the Warriors is the visit of arch local rivals Flexachem KCYMS and a revenge mission for the Tralee side after losing 83-76 on the road in Round 5. Killorglin will be desperate for a win as their relegation rivals UCC Demons and Moycullen both won on the road on Saturday night.

It promises to be another cracking contest between the sides that never disappoint when it comes to drama, excitement and pure entertainment. Tip off at the Tralee Sports Complex next Saturday night is 7.30pm.

Soccer And GAA Stars To Help Alex At Charity Legends Game

.
Little Alex Fitzgerald and family.

PLANS are now at an advanced stage for the Kerry FC hosted charity game which takes place this coming Friday night, February 2nd.

In a novel idea by the club, a Kerry Soccer Legends XI will take on a Kerry GAA Legends XI in a game which will raise vital funds for the care of Alex Fitzgerald from Tralee.

Maurice Fitzgerald, Aidan O’Mahony, Seamus Moynihan and Barry John Keane are some of the famous faces to switch codes for the game.

Continued below…

.

Son of John and Siobhan Fitzgerald of Tralee, Alex, who is 4 years of age was diagnosed with cancer last August. As the family was sent to Crumlin Hospital, doctors discovered a tumour on Alex’s Adrenal Gland which led to Alex being diagnosed with Metastatic Neuroblastoma cancer.

Alex has been making regular trips to the Dublin hospital since and has received 10 rounds of chemotherapy. Doctors are currently in the process of harvesting Alex’s stem cells as he will need a bone-marrow transplant in the future.

The aim of the Charity game being held by Kerry FC is to help fund the families regular trips to Dublin to care for Alex.

With fuel costs on the rise and regular accommodation needed for both John and Siobhan while in Dublin, every cent raised by Kerry FC in the build-up to next Friday’s novel encounter will be donated to the Fitzgerald family to allow them to continue their long road to Alex’s recovery.

The game itself will be a unique chance for fans of soccer and gaelic games in the county to come together for a good cause. With many Kerry based legends of both soccer and GAA signed up to tog off for the game, it is sure to be an unmissable night in Mounthawk Park, with kick off scheduled for 7pm.

The Kerry soccer stars will be led by two members who have helped guide Kerry into the League of Ireland.

Billy Dennehy, Kerry FC Sporting Director, who played his trade in Sunderland in the UK along with representing the county at European level with Shamrock Rovers is dusting off his boots as will Chief Operations Officer Steven Conway, who also played his trade at League of Ireland level.

Former Kerry FC footballer Shane Guthrie will also play having played in both the Premier Division and First Division over the last 2 decades and Tralee man Sean Kelly, who was also on the books at Arsenal, will dig out a pair of boots for the game. Current Kerry FC First Team Coach James Sugrue will also be among those togging off.

In Kerry we are stacked with GAA legends so narrowing it down to an 11 to play is quite the task.

The side will be led by Darran O’Sullivan, 4 time All Ireland winner and former Kerry captain who carries an impressive CV. Plenty of names are to be confirmed before the kick off on Friday night

Kerry FC Sporting Director and former professional footballer Billy Dennehy said “Going back when Kerry FC was formed, Steven has mentioned about running a legends game at some point.

Then over the last few months meeting with Alex and his family, being a neighbour of theirs, I could see first-hand what they are going through and thinking of ways we could help.

This game was then the perfect opportunity for the game to have a proper purpose. Everyone has been brilliant with their engagement and we’ve received huge support from both the players and the community.”

If you wish to attend the game, tickets are on sale now on www.kerryfc.com/ticketsAdults are priced at €10 and it’s €5 for kids. If you can’t attend but would like to donate, you can find our GoFundMe page across our social media @kerryfc.

REPORT: Kerry Secure The Points With Home Win Against Waterford

.

Dan Kearney reports on Kerry’s win over Waterford on Sunday afternoon in Killarney…

Kerry 2-11

Waterford 2-5

Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh scored 1-4 off the bench to inspire Kerry to a six points victory over a dogged Waterford outfit at Fitzgerald Stadium in the second round of the Lidl National Football League Division 1.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh entered proceedings in the 47th minute when Kerry were a point ahead but the Footballer of the Year then took with a fine performance that included a beautiful lobbed goal in the 64th minute.

Waterford, playing into the wind and rain in the opening half, got off to a whirlwind start after 45 seconds when Kellyann Hogan scored a fortuitous goal as her tame shot slipped through the hands of an unsighted Kerry netminder Mary Ellen Bolger.

Continued below…

.

Bríd McMaugh followed with a point on five minutes and as Waterford continued to boss the opening exchanges a free from Hogan fell short for Mairead O’Brien to punch to the net . That put Waterford 2-1 to 0-0 after 10 minutes before Kerry finally got moving.

Their comeback started when Niamh Carmody pointed her first of four frees in the half following a foul on Jadyn Lucey, and Lucey hit the back of the net soccer style in the 14th minute after being put through by Carmody.

Carmody added another free and then Emma Dineen put over when she might have goaled and suddenly Kerry were just a single point behind, 1-3 to 2-1, with eight minutes left in the first half.

Waterford needed a lifeline of their own and they got it when Aine O’Neill drove through for a good score but two Niamh Carmody frees saw the sides go in level at half time, 1-5 to 2-2.

.

Half time substitute Danielle O’Leary gave Kerry the lead for the first time in the game four minutes into the second half and followed up three minutes later with another beautiful score.

Alannah McNulty got one back for the visitors and the Kerry goal was living dangerously but Mairead O’Brien’s effort was ruled out for a throw ball.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh then entered the game and popped over a free and by the 59th minute the sides were level at 1-11 to 2-5 apiece.

Then came Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s goal after she was fed by Danielle O’Leary and Kerry were able to see out the remainder of the game.

The now 25 year old concentrated on GAA with Austin Stacks and quickly got drafted into the Kerry minor setup where he won two Munster and two All Ireland finals under Jack O’Connor.

Following success at minor level, O’Brien went on to play senior football with Austin Stacks GAA club for seven years, winning a couple of championships and leagues within the county in his time at Connolly Park

Following the arrival of Kerry FC to the county, O’Brien made the decision to go back to the game and has now signed for the club ahead of the 2024 season. Ferdia is a versatile player who can play both centre midfield and centre back.

It’s also given me a chance to play again and I feel coming from a different background to everyone else I can be an asset to the team using my experiences from the GAA. I can’t wait now to get up and running properly and playing in front of a packed out Mounthawk Park in a few weeks’ time”.

PHOTOS: Mike Gives A Preview Of ‘Released’ At The Mall

.

SO we’ve ‘Kojak’ to thank for this.

Who knew that a 70s cop show featuring a follically-challenged detective would set a pre-pubescent Tralee boy on a path that led him to a life in the arts.

Mike O’Donnell relayed this information to a gathering in The Mall Tavern on Friday night at a special preview of his upcoming exhibition of drawings, ‘Released’, taking place in Listowel during the month of February.

Mike told assembled friends that a scene involving a court artist in that popular TV show prompted him to take up sketching. First he tried drawing his brothers — but they wouldn’t sit still for him — and later he took his pad to Tralee courthouse.

Continued below…

.

His talent has led him to attending many trials in Dublin over the past few decades and Mike previously held a court art exhibition, ‘Captured’, at King’s Inns, Dublin in 2011.

Mike had a small selection of the drawings which make up his latest exhibition at the bar on Friday and he gave a brief explanation of how his subjects came to sit for him.

Cllr Deirdre Ferris was at the preview where she saw the study of her dad, the former Kerry TD Martin Ferris, who sat for Mike a few weeks ago.

A few of the intimate studies of Gerard ‘The Monk’ Hutch, whose trial was held in April 2023, were also on show on Friday night.

It was just a teaser for the main event, ‘Released’ in St. John’s Theatre and Arts Centre in Listowel for the entire month of February.

Jim Sheridan, the famed director of My Left Foot, The Field,  In the Name of the Father and others, will be in Listowel on Saturday, February 3 at 1pm to launch the exhibition.

‘Released’ will be open for viewing at St. John’s from February 1 to February 29, Monday to Friday, between 10am and 5pm. Scroll down for photos…

Know Your Rights: Sick Leave And Sick Pay

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

In the past, you had no legal right to be paid while you were on sick leave from work. However, this has changed and there is not  a Statutory Sick Pay Scheme in place.

What is the Statutory Sick Pay scheme (SSP)?

Since 1 January 2023, you have a right to 3 days’ sick pay a year. This is called statutory sick pay (that means the legal minimum). Sick pay is paid by your employer at 70% of your normal pay up to a maximum of €110 a day. From 1 January 2024, paid sick leave will increase from 3 to 5 days a year. It will increase to 7 days in 2025 and 10 days in 2026

Sick days can be taken as consecutive days or non-consecutive days. The sick pay year is the calendar year, so it runs from 1 January to 31 December.

Continued below…

.

How do I know if I am entitled to sick pay?

To qualify for statutory sick pay you must be an employee and have worked for your employer for at least 13 continuous weeks before you are sick. You must also be certified by a GP as unable to work. If you have multiple employers, you can get 3 days paid sick leave from each employer, once you have 13 weeks service with that employer before you are sick.

Can part-time workers get 3 days?

Yes, both full-time and part-time employees can take 3 days paid sick leave.

However, the amount you get paid for your sick leave (70% of your earnings, up to €110) is based on the average of your pay over the 13 weeks before you are on sick leave

Do I need a medical cert to get sick pay?

Under the sick leave legislation, you must be certified by a GP as unable to work to qualify for statutory sick pay. You should be certified from day 1 of your sick leave.

You have a right to SSP from the first day you are off sick. Your employer cannot apply ‘waiting days’ before you get sick pay.

If your employer has their own sick pay scheme that offers more generous benefits than SSP, you should be paid under those arrangements. The SSP is for employees who don’t have a company sick pay scheme or don’t qualify for it.

Continued below…

.

How is my sick pay calculated?

Your statutory sick leave payment must be paid at your normal daily rate. You are entitled to 70% of your normal pay, up to a maximum €110 a day.

What is normal daily pay?

Your normal daily pay includes any regular bonus or allowance which do not change from week to week (but excludes overtime or commission).

If your pay changes from week-to-week (for example, because of regular bonus payments or allowance), your sick pay is the average of your pay over the 13 weeks before you are on sick leave. Remember that sick pay is capped at a maximum of €110 a day.

What happens if I am off sick for more than 3 days?

If you are off work sick for more than 3 days, and you have enough PRSI contributions, you can apply to the Department of Social Protection (DSP) for a payment called Illness Benefit.

If you do not have enough PRSI contributions, you should contact the DSP’s representative at your local health centre. They will assess your situation.

How are my employment rights protected while I am on sick leave?

Your employments rights are protected during sick leave. You are treated as being in employment while you are on sick leave.

What are my options if I experience problems getting sick pay?

If you do not get sick pay, contact your employer to try to resolve the issue informally first.

If you cannot resolve the issue directly with your employer, you can make a formal complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC). Contact your local Citizens Information Centre for information on how to make a complaint to the WRC

You must make your complaint within 6 months of the dispute. The time limit can be extended for a further 6 months if there is reasonable cause for the delay.

Can an Employer be exempt from paying sick pay?

An employer who is experiencing severe financial difficulties can apply to the Labour Court for an exemption to pay statutory sick pay. If an exemption is granted, it will be for a period of between 3 to 12 months.

• For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary.

The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.  Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Sponsored: Laser Hair Removal Treatment At The CHRC

.

Mary O’Donnell of the Cosmetic And Hair Restoration Clinic on the Laser Hair Removal treatment at the Clinic…

CHRC is renowned for hair restoration but it will also be offering Laser Hair Removal.

If hair removal is on your 2024 list, now is the time to do it! There are many advantages long term such as time and money saving.

It is very precise, no matter how many times you wax or shave you will always find a few hairs you have missed. It is a quick method of hair removal as you can zap away multiple hairs all in one go.

Each zap takes a fraction of a second. The laser technology used means you remove hairs right at their follicle and you can say goodbye to painful ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs also contribute to itchy and irritated skin after hair removal.

The hairs will become less thick and abundant after each laser hair removal session.

The aesthetic practitioner applies a laser light to the area of unwanted hair. The pulses of light admitted by the laser attack the hair and the follicle, destroying the hair at the root. Hair grows in three different phases, and for the laser to be most effective, the hair must be in the growth phase. Multiple treatments are required for initial hair removal and maintenance treatments may be needed also.

So, if you want to say want to address unwanted hair for 2024, get in touch with this multi-award-winning clinic now to arrange your appointment and avail of our special opening offer of 30% a course of treatments; email chrc@bonsecours.ie or phone 086-0786120.
