KERRY County Council has commenced the planning process for a proposed centre for water-based activities in Fenit.
The proposed facility, adjacent to the greenway trailhead and the beach at Fenit, will provide appropriate facilities for water sports participants and cyclists.
The quality of the visitor experience will be improved and remove the need for individuals and families to ‘get changed at the boot of their car’ and improve the visitor experience.
Continued below…
The centre will provide hot showers, changing and toilet facilities, secure storage, induction spaces, equipment wash-down facilities and orientation points.
Kerry County Council secured funding of €1.2m from Fáilte Ireland to develop this facility in under the Platforms for Growth 2019-2025: Platform 2 – Facility Centres for Water Sports Activities.
The Platform for Growth is a scheme developed by Fáilte Ireland to support the development of shared facilities at waterways in the Republic of Ireland through the provision of funding.
The facility will be fully wheelchair accessible and include a ‘Changing Place’ compliant facility and will be built using sustainability best practices such as solar heating panels to meet Nearly Zero Energy Building Standards.
Additional cycling related infrastructure will be provided within the building and the surrounding public realm and car park to adjust the facility to service the trailhead.
The design incorporates the public realm around the facility and the link to the greenway creating a serviced trailhead for that amenity.
The Part VIII planning process has commenced and submissions from members of the public are invited via the Kerry County Council online consultations portal.
Submissions must be received no later than Friday, 15 March, and full details and designs can be viewed at kerrycoco.ie.
A full report on all submissions received will be presented to the elected members in the Tralee Municipal District thereafter.

Milltown Bowling Club:
New Year, New hobby.
Want to try something new and fun then come along to Milltown Nagle Rice community centre and have a go at short mat bowls.
All you need is just a pair of comfortable shoes for two hours of gently rolling bowls along a 1.8 meter wide x 12 meter long mat.
A timber block is placed midway along the mat and the aim of the game is to roll a bowl along the mat, avoiding the block and touching a yellow ball called the “Jack” at the opposite end.
A wooden fender is placed at both ends to keep the bowls from rolling off the mat end.
Nearest bowl to the Jack after 9 ends scores, the more of your bowls closer than your opponent the more you score.
All training and guidance will be provided along with the use of club bowls to get you started.
Once you get going then we have league and cup competitions, friendly individual and group matches along with the opportunity to play other clubs within Kerry.
Sounds simple!!!
Well the only way to find out is to come along and have a go.
First night is free and it’s only a fiver then per night for two hours of fun and learning to play one of the fastest growing indoor sports for all age groups in Ireland.
Milltown bowls club looks forward to seeing you on Tuesday and Friday nights at 8pm.

IT has been announced that €3.5m has been allocated for 20 projects in Kerry under the Active Travel Investment Programme for 2024.
Kerry has been allocated €3.5m of the €1bn allocation nationwide. A number of schools are included under the Safe Routes To School programme including €180,000 for Moyderwell Mercy Primary School; €80,000 for Presentation Secondary School; €80,000 for Mercy Secondary School, Mounthawk, €80,000 for Sacred Heart Primary School, Castle Street and €80,000 for Scoil Mhuire na mBriathre (CBS Primary) (see full list below).
Kerry County Council can use the funds to improve infrastructure such as footpaths, cycle tracks, greenway connections and road junctions, making it safer for people of all ages and abilities to embrace active modes of travel.
Continued below…
Welcoming the announcement, Tralee Local Election Candidate, Anluan Dunne, said: “This is another welcome allocation of funding to enable the Council to deliver for people walking and on bicycles. Our towns and villages are choked with traffic every day, particularly at school times, and this funding should be used to help people get around more easily. We need the ambition shown by government in providing the funding, matched by our Council in delivering the projects on the ground.”
Mr. Dunne continued: “Significant funding has been made available for years by The Department of Transport, but the delivery simply isn’t happening fast enough. The Greenway in Tralee, for example, has no safe connection into the town centre. Similarly, there are junctions around the town which are dangerous for pedestrians which have not been upgraded in decades. This funding needs to be used to make getting around on foot or by bike safer, easier and more convenient.”
Concluding, Mr. Dunne said: “While this new round of funding is extremely welcome, and with so many significant projects delivered across the country, I find it disappointing that there has been little or no progress in Tralee in recent times. There are no projects in Tralee included in this round of funding of major significance, which indicates to me that none were applied for. We need far more ambition for our County Town which is relatively flat and easy to get around on a bike or on foot.”
IN a culinary spectacle set to take place today, apprentices from across Ireland have converged at The Great Southern Hotel in Killarney, to compete in the National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Competition.
Organised by the Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) in partnership with the Irish Hotel Federation and other industry stakeholders, this event is poised to not only display exceptional culinary skills but also shed light on a crucial solution to Ireland’s ongoing hospitality staff crisis.
The participating apprentices represent a diverse cross-section of emerging talent from Kerry ETB, Cork ETB, Tipperary ETB, Limerick & Clare ETB, Kilkenny & Carlow ETB, Kildare & Wicklow ETB, Cavan & Monaghan ETB, Mayo, Sligo & Leitrim ETB, City of Dublin ETB and promises to showcase a melting pot of creativity and passion
Continued below…
Beyond the competition, the event offers a unique opportunity for attendees to gain valuable insights into the world of apprenticeship.
Live cookery and display competitions will be complemented by inspiring talks from prominent figures in the culinary world, aiming to address the current challenges faced by the hospitality sector.
Among the highlights are guest speakers Mike Tweedie, Head Chef of the Oak Room, and Eddie Attwell, Head Chef of Eccles Hotel Glengarriff.
Tweedie and Attwell will share first-hand how the Commis Chef Apprenticeship played a pivotal role in growing their teams, offering a tangible success story for businesses considering similar initiatives.
A panel discussion featuring culinary leaders John Drummond, Brendan Byrne, Emer Corridan, and Odhran Lucey will underscore the importance of mentoring and training the next generation of chefs. Their insights will contribute to the broader conversation about the role apprenticeships play in ensuring the future success of the hospitality industry.
Mike Tweedie, Head Chef of the Oak Room, adds, “The apprenticeship programme gives the apprentice the foundations they need and what we do in the restaurant is reinforce what they learned in college. I have two great chefs from the apprenticeship programme already and I have just taken on a third. One day I hope they are better than me and they have their own Michelin star, that means I have done my job, and it is a great thing for me to watch personally”
