THE new junior infants are well settled in now around Tralee schools after the excitement of last week.

We visited Spa NS last Friday in the brilliant sunshine to find the new arrivals getting to know each other in Ms Ahern’s classroom, while Ms O’Reilly’s class were out having fun climbing in the activity area.

They were already comfortable with the new surroundings and making new friends for life. Scroll down for photos…

West Kerry Community Features On TG4 Show ‘Bailte’

.
Máiréad Ní Dhubhda from Clochán Bréanainn with ‘Bailte’ presenter Síle Nic Chonaonaigh.

THE award-winning series ‘Bailte’ returns to TG4 this week for its 4th season with Síle Nic Chonaonaigh continuing her journey through the townlands of Ireland.

The first episode this Thursday at 8pm sees Síle visit Clochán Breánainn, on the northern side of Leithinis an Daingin where poet Micheál Ó Ruairc shows her some local points of interest, including the Church where Crom Dubh’s statue once stood.

She meets renowned sheep shearer Thomas O’Connor and takes a trip to see An Sás with Eugene Lyne.

Continued below…

.

Her attempt to serve ice-cream for Pádraig Ó Murchú of Murphy’s Pub doesn’t quite go to plan but she might win a hand or two playing cards under Máiréad Ní Dhubhda’s keen eye.

Síle finishes her visit to the area with a night of music and song at the Tinteán Ceoil, a favourite for locals and visitors.

During the series, Síle explores the resilience of our rural communities and reveals the deep connection people have with their townland and how local landscapes and traditions remain a constant influence on our daily lives.

The series is a celebration of the hard-working and vibrant communities who are doing their very best to ensure their own community is more than just a mere layby and a pretty stop-off along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Billy O’Shea Seeks To Be Fine Gael Candidate For Kerry In Next General Election

.
Billy O’Shea

FORMER Kerry senior football captain Billy O’Shea is seeking to be the Fine Gael candidate for the upcoming General Election.

The 1997 All-Ireland winner confirmed today that he is going for the nomination to contest the upcoming General Election at the Fine Gael selection convention.

The convention for Kerry Fine Gael members is due to be held later this month. Mr O’Shea, originally from Listowel, works as a publican and auctioneer in Killorglin.

.

“While all aspects of Irish life are important to me, I have a keen interest in the housing market given my background in this area as an auctioneer and what people in the county here are facing,” said Mr O’Shea in a statement issued this afternoon outlining his intentions.

“I want Kerry people to be able to live and work in their home communities, there is no better place in the world to live. I also have a keen interest in the health sector. My father was the local GP in Listowel for many years and I’m well aware of the importance of rural communities having their own health services – they are a precious and much valued resource.

“Prior to becoming self-employed, I worked as a veterinarian representative and gained a big insight into the agricultural sector before joining AIB and worked in both Kenmare and Caherciveen branches for four years.”

Continued below…

.

“Given I am located in the Mid-Kerry area, we are within a reasonable distance of all areas to help the needs of the constituents of the county. I would like to be in a position to continue the good work of the outgoing TD, Brendan Griffin, who brought a lot of stability to the county following the economic crash.”

“I acknowledge the difficult economic climate that we are facing into with rising costs of living in all areas and I am under no illusion of the challenges that lay ahead. But this a challenge I would relish if nominated by Fine Gael members at the upcoming convention,” Mr O’Shea said.

Mr O’Shea is married to Emir Irwin from Killarney. They have three children; Abigail, Liam, and Peter.

Relics Of St Bernadette To Visit Church In Tralee

.

THE relics of St Bernadette will be brought to a church in Tralee next week.

Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church will host the relics over Friday/Saturday, September 13/14. In 1858, the young girl, Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, said she experienced multiple apparitions of the Virgin Mary. After a canonical investigation, Soubirous’s reports were declared worthy of belief.

Bernadette died in 1879 and was later canonized in 1933. Her relics will journey on pilgrimage to Ireland for the very first time, visiting every diocese in the country from September 4th to November 5th this year.

Continued below…

.

This will provide an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience the special gifts and charisms of Lourdes in their diocese.

The relics will be brought to St Brendan’s Church on Friday September 13th at 12 noon. At 3pm there will be the Stations of the Cross. At 6.30pm there will be a Mass and at 8.30pm the Rosary and Veneration concludes.

On Saturday, there will be Mass at 9.30am, a Mass for the sick with Sacrament of Anointing at 12 noon and Rosary at 4pm. Vigil Mass will be celebrated at 6.30pm and a Torchlight procession and Veneration take place at 9pm.

CANCER support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, was a hive of activity on Friday morning as over 40 members of Network Ireland Kerry visited the Tralee premises for a special coffee morning and centre tour.

The event was a joint initiative between Network Ireland Kerry and their charity partner for 2024, and was also attended by a number of special guests, including Minister Norma Foley, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, along with local gardaí, Mary Gardiner and Aidan O’Mahony.

Welcoming guests to the event, Network Ireland Kerry President, Linda O’Mahony-Logan, spoke of her delighted at having chosen to collaborate with Recovery Haven Kerry during her term, describing the morning as ‘really special’.

“When we launched 14 months ago, every president gets to choose a charity partner, and for me choosing Recovery Haven was a no-brainer. It was so easy because at Network Ireland Kerry we’re all about support and creating a community of support for businesswomen -be they employers, employees or entrepreneurs. We are all about making connections and about having a safe place to go, and we know that those same values are very strong here at Recovery Haven too.”

Pictured at the Network Ireland Kerry Coffee Morning at Recovery Haven in Tralee were: Lorna Griffin (IPS Kerry) and Teresa O’Shea (IPS Kerry) with Education Minister Norma Foley (centre). Photo: Michelle Breen Crean Photography

She also paid tribute to the charity’s volunteers who give so much to Recovery Haven daily, and who were instrumental in creating such a beautiful setting for Friday’s event.

Recovery Haven’s Client Services Co-ordinator, Siobhan MacSweeney, also spoke about the importance of working with Network Ireland Kerry, and encouraged those in the room to help spread the word about what the charity is all about and let their friends, families and communities know the free cancer support services that are available.

Several guests enjoyed some time in the charity’s stunning garden before touring the newly refurbished building with staff and volunteers.

Friday’s event was one of a number of collaborations between Network Ireland Kerry and Recovery Haven in 2024, which will culminate in a Christmas Lunch in Killarney in December. Scroll down for photos…

THE 2024 Dingle Food Festival has been launched with a wonderful line-up of events and a special emphasis this year on zero waste policy.

The festival is continuing on its mission to be the first Irish “Zero Landfill Waste” festival. Taking place from Friday 4th to Sunday the 6th of October, the festival is expected to attract over 10,000 visitors with 150,000 food tastings on offer.

Once again this year, all festival goers are being encouraged to bring their own bowl. For those who don’t, there will be stainless steel bowls available to rent for two euro (with five euro deposit).

Continued below…

.

There will also be festival packs on sale consisting of a bamboo bowl and cutlery set. Taste trail and market outlets will only be serving food onto reusable tableware, with the main aim being to reduce the amount of disposable packaging over the weekend.

Speaking at today’s launch, festival Chairperson Martin Bealin was highlighting the amount of waste festivals generate and the sustainable practices that the Dingle Food Festival are implementing to reduce this. “There will be approximately 150,000 tastings happening over the weekend, so getting rid of the disposable packaging will make a huge impact… it’s a big challenge for the Dingle Food Festival community but one we know will be embraced” he said.

Other sustainable practices over the weekend will be HVO Generators; printed material moving online, with a smaller festival programme being printed; green transport – working with Bus Éireann and The Local Link, providing more bus options to and from the peninsula over the weekend and sustainable practices workshops.

Highlights of this year’s festival include the much loved Taste Trail, where festival goers purchase a book of taste tickets and get to sample food delights throughout the picturesque town.

Numerous Food Masterclasses and workshops will be taking place including Pitmaster Barbeqing from Smokin Soul, Seafood Curing and Smoking with Burren Smokehouse, Sourdough Making, Cake Baking and Wine Tasting and much much more.

Tickets for all masterclass and workshops can be purchased from dinglefood.com where full the line up and event details are also listed.

Together with the Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards, market stalls, street entertainment, live music and kids activities, there really is something for everyone! Check out www.dinglefood.com

Senior Men

The Kerry Petroleum: Premier Junior Football Club Championship Quarter Final.
Ballymacelligott  V Annascaul
Date: Sunday 1st September 2024.
Venue: John Mitchel’s.

Halfway through the first half, Annascaul had all the momentum, scoring three points on the trot, reducing Ballymac’s lead. They were bearing down on goal when Christy Leen made a crucial point-blank save that gave Ballymac the initiative.

Had Annascaul scored that goal, it could have changed the course of the game. This save by Leen was a game-changer, preventing Annascaul from taking the lead and potentially altering the game’s dynamics.

On Sunday, Ballymac a wind in the first half at John Mitchel’s GAA grounds.  Annascaul’s Jason Hickson opened the scoring  with a point from a free. Vinnie Horan opened the home side scoring, and following a turnover from Josh O’Keeffe, Donal Daly scored Ballymac’s second point. Annascaul added two points from Jason Hickson (F) and Killian Falvey.

In the 7th minute, Niall Collins got a great pass from Vinnie Horan and hit the back of the net.  Then, Niall Collins dispossessed Annascaul and passed the ball to Daire Keane, who scored a point, followed by another from Ballymac’s Micheál Reidy. The score was 1-04 to 0-3 to Ballymac.

Undeterred, the men from the West launched a spirited attack, scoring three points in quick succession. However, Christy Leen’s heroic save on goal, which would have put Annascaul in the lead, was a testament to Ballymac’s resilience.

Aidan Breen’s successful free point further solidified their lead, with the score standing at Ballymac 1-05 Annascaul 0-6. This sequence of events underscored the unwavering teamwork and camaraderie within the Ballymac team, inspiring their ability to win and turn the game in their favour.

Josh O’Keeffe turned over a ball in front of the Ballymac Goal, and Vinnie had a great goal chance that was saved by Tommy Pierce in the Annascaul goal  and resulted in a 45.

Annascaul added a point and had a ball cleared off the Ballymac full forward line by two great blocks, first from Daragh Sweeney and then by Josh O’Keeffe, and Micheál Reidy scored a point as a result.  Both sides pointed for frees from Aidan Breen and Jason Hickson before the halftime whistle blew.

The Half Time score: Ballymacelligott 1-05  Annascaul 0-06.

Six minutes into the second half, Ballymac had notched up five more points from Aidan Breen(F), Vinnie Horan, Donal Daly, Niall Collins and Daire Keane. Annascaul was trailing by 7 points. David Smith scored the first point of the half for the lads from the West, and Donal Daly scored a point for Ballymac.

Tommy Pierce, in goal for Annascaul, made a massive save that rebounded, and the ball was cleared. This save gave Annascaul a second wind, and Jason Hickson scored a point from a free. Shortly afterwards, they hit the back of the Ballymac net. With a quarter of an hour to go to full-time, there were three points between the teams.

It was a display of sheer teamwork as Ballymac went on the offensive and scored two points from frees from Vinnie Horan and Aidan Breen. Annascaul added one of their own from a free. Micheál Reidy and Vinnie Horan added two from the play.

Annascaul scored their last game point before Dara Regan and Aidan Breen scored one each for Ballymac. The final whistle blew. It was a hard-won game for Ballymac to secure a place in the semi-final. Annascaul proved to be a formidable opponent and never gave up.

The match concluded with Ballymacelligott 1-19 Annascaul 1-12, securing Ballymac’s place in the semi-final.

Senior Ladies

Senior Ladies

This Monday we travel to Kenmare to take on the Mighty Inbhear Scéine Gaels, where we really need a win after a very disappointing loss away to Fossa in our last game. This is the last Monday night game and we have a break after this before we play our quarter final. It would be great to see the support that we had in Killorglin show up again.

Match Report

Bons Secours County Junior Premier Championship

Round 2

In what should have our home game in the Championship we had to travel away to Fossa in our second round game. After a very up and down performance in our victory over Laune Rangers, this continued again v Fossa, however this time we failed to get across the line.

After conceding a goal in the 7th minute, we were able to put over 2 points in reply from Sarah Scanlon and Rachel Griffin.

Then Fossa hit us for 1-3 without reply, leaving us 2-3 to 0-2, but again we fought back with a goal from Sarah Scanlon and 5 more points to leave us just a point behind at the short whistle 1-7 to 2-5.

We started the second half with a bang, a point from Sarah and a goal from Rachel Creedon. Then however we went 21 minutes before we scored again with a point from Rachel Griffin.

In that time despite great defensive work, we conceded 2-2 leaving us just four points down chasing the game with 5 mins remaining. We did narrow it down to just three points, but could not find a way through for the leveling goal. Fossa did have the last say to finish on a scoreline of 2-10 Ballymac 4-8 Fossa.

Squad was Robyn White, Jaime Lee O’Connor, Una Morrissey, Ciara Kerins, Emma Daly, Roisin Rahilly (0-2), Anna Collins, Aisling O’Connell, Keelin Enright, Ellie McElliogott, Sarah Scanlon (1-5), Rachel Creedon (1-0), Ella Quirke, Rachel Griffin(0-2), Kate Collins (0-1), Kerry Hennessy, Emily O’Brien, Caoimhe Carroll, Lisa Curran, Eve Creedon, Aoibhinn Broderick, Laura Kelly, Grainne Galvin, Clare Kenny, Emma Leen, Aoife Galvin.

U16’squad

U16 Division 6 county league shield semi final

Ballymac travelled to Listowel Tuesday evening for a very competitive game that unfortunately Listowel came out on top. Next up for the U16 girls is the North Kerry League.

Our U7 and U9 boys hit the road to Spa Killarney for an exciting morning of football. It was fantastic to watch some very competitive games, with great sportsmanship shown by all! A big thank you to Spa for hosting us.There was a great sense of community spirit in the Klub afterwards, and John put on a fantastic spread that had all the boys smiling. We also want to give a shout-out to all the parents who helped with the food and clean-up — your support makes all the difference.

U11 Boys:

Our u11s had two fantastic games V Churchill Thursday night in sun drenched Ballyrickard. The boys battled hard in a well contested first half. In the second half the passing and support play was much better and the scores followed. Well done boys on a great display.

Training continued on Saturday morning in Ballyrickard.

U13 Boys:

Our U13 boys had two great wins today in the Central Region Semifinals v An Ghaeltacht; our A team won 5-10 to 1-08 led by Captain and man of the match Evan Griffin. Onwards now to the Central Region Div 2 final and the Central Region B final as well.  Dates to be confirmed.

Ladies Notes:

u12 Girls

U12 Girls:

KOR U12 girls took on Kilcummin in Ballyrickard on Tuesday evening. Every girl ,1 to 11, put in a great performance. Ava put on a football exhibition in front of the goals as she netted on numerous occasions. Harriet was a massive threat going forward and was very strong carrying the ball. As always, our defence was phenomenal with no one giving Kilcummin an inch. These girls are a credit to themselves. What a great game of football to be involved in. Thanks to Kilcummin who made the journey into Ballyrickard and to Garry Kissane for reffing.

U14 Girls

U14 Girls:

Unfortunately our U14 Strand Road team lost against an impressive St Pat’s side at Ballyrickard Wednesday night in the North Kerry League. We were playing catch up from the get go, with the St Pat’s girls scoring 2-2 before we registered our first point.

We trailed by 8 points at the break, but to the girls’ credit, they came out fighting in the second half and at one stage, were within two points of the visitors. Lily Hussey showed her usual determination to bring her team right back into the game, and Meabh Kennedy had her best game yet at full forward.

Emily Corridon had another solid performance at cornerback; Rachael Ahern ran herself ragged while our substitutes from the under 12 panel all made their presence felt and made a huge difference when introduced.

In the end however, St Pat’s were deserving winners. We play Stacks tonight in Connolly Park.

Our U14 Kerins O’Rahillys team played Churchill on Sunday evening unfortunately they lost to a very strong Churchill team.   Everyone put in a great performance throughout the game but just came up short at the end.  Well done to Churchill who were well deserving winners.

The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said: “#TieDayFriday is now an established fundraising event in Kerry with the proceeds assisting us with the cost of rolling out free and affordable mental health educational activities and other relevant supports throughout the county.

“Kerry Mental Health Association also donates thousands of euros each year to support people in Kerry with mental health challenges, their families and friends, covering a range of projects. So we’re asking everyone to please wear a tie, post a picture and make a donation to make a difference.”

A fundraising business breakfast at the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee is also planned for #TieDayFriday 4th October and will be of interest to employees, employers and the self-employed with ticket details to be announced soon.

Kerry Mental Health Association’s branches organise or provide financial support for various therapies that may be helpful. Many of the services are provided in the various local HSE-run Day Care Centres throughout the county.

Donations of any amount can be made online to www.KerryMentalHealth.ie/donate to help play a part in supporting Kerry Mental Health Association on #TieDayFriday 4th October.

Louise Quill, founder of Tír na nÓg Children’s Foundation, has been selected for the honour by the Kerry Association in Dublin in recognition of the transformative work she has done supporting disadvantaged communities in Tanzania for the past 18 years.

The Kerry Person of the Year award, now in its 43rd year, recognises an individual who has shown leadership, brought honour to the county, and performed services for the county to such an extent that could be described as beyond the norm of everyday life.

During her tribute to Louise Quill, a native of Tralee, the Cathaoirleach of the Kerry Association in Dublin, Mary Shanahan, said “this award is presented in recognition of Louise’s exceptional work in leading the Charity Tír na nÓg to provide essential services and infrastructure to those in need in Tanzania”.

She referred to Louise’s work which has led to the development of kindergartens and schools, including a massive multi-million-euro project completed last year.

She has also been instrumental in drilling boreholes to provide access to clean water and has initiated multiple water filtration projects providing thousands of people in underprivileged communities with access to safe drinking water.

Her efforts have also resulted in the creation of sports and recreation facilities, playgrounds for children and the construction of a library. In recent times building of a dental clinic has been completed, as well as a third sanitation system at a school for disabled children.

Mary said, “the examples outlined are, but a small sample of the transformative projects led by Louise providing employment to hundreds of people, while at the same time building sustainable communities”.

Louise Quill said “I am truly honoured and deeply humbled to receive the Kerry Person of the Year award. This recognition is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the incredible work of everyone involved with Tír na nÓg Children’s Foundation. Our mission has always been to bring hope, support, and brighter futures to children who need it most, and this award affirms the importance of that work. I want to thank the people of Kerry for their unwavering support and belief in our cause. Together, we are making a difference, and I am proud to share this moment with all of you.”

The Kerry Ladies Senior Football Team and their management team were selected as the 2024 Laochra Chiarraí award winners in recognition of the enormous contribution they have made to ladies’ football, culminating in All Ireland success this year.

Captain, Niamh Carmody said “It’s an absolute honour to receive this award. It’s a testament to all the hard work that has been put into Kerry Ladies football over the past number of years. And just a special thanks to Kerry Group for their continued support”

Nora Fealey, Chairperson Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football Association, said “On behalf of Kerry LGFA, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to The Kerry Association in Dublin for recognising the Kerry Senior Ladies Football Team as the Laochra Chiarraí winners for 2024. Your acknowledgment of their hard work and achievements means a great deal to us. We are truly honoured by this distinction and appreciate the support from the Kerry Association in Dublin.”

Brigid Laffan, President of the Kerry Association said; “The awards recognise the exceptional contribution made by Louise to improving the lives of others and by the Kerry ladies’ team in showing leadership and inspiration to future generations of footballers.”.

Both awards will be presented at the Association’s annual Oíche Chiarraí which will be held in the Louis Fitzgerald hotel, Dublin on Saturday,  October 19.
