Seniors Na Gaeil senior team travelled to Glenbeigh on Sunday to take on the home side Glenbeigh/Glencar in Round 3 of the County League.
Due to the rain before the game underfoot conditions were very slippery with players from both sides sliding all over the place. Na Gaeil’s Ian McCarthy opened the scoring after two minutes with a fine point from out on the right wing.
Three minutes later Glenbeigh/Glencar midfielder Liam Smith fired over from thirty metres. Tommy Cahill pointed a free for the home side and followed up with a point from play to put them two ahead after 11 minutes.
But Na Gaeil struck for a goal a minute later after a good move that was finished to the net by the young Jack Bourke. Glenbeigh/Glencar’s lively corner forward Rian Donovan slotted over a point on 20 minutes.
But Na Gaeil thundered into the game and scored the next three points through Jack Sheehan, Dan Goggin and Darragh Reen to leave them three in front at the interval. Half time score: Na Gaeil: 1-04; Glenbeigh/Glencar: 0-04.
Na Gaeil again started the half brightly with the impressive Dan Goggin scoring a fine point with the first attack.
But Glenbeigh/Glencar’s response was immediate with a second point from Rian Donovan and a pointed free from Tommy Cahill. But the momentum swung in the way of Na Gaeil again with Andrew Barry making one of his dashing runs up the left wing to swing over a beauty from 40 metres.
Darragh Carmody added to Na Gaeil’s tally with a thirty metre pointed free to leave us four points ahead after 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Tommy Cahill pointed a free for the home side on 17 minutes to leave a goal separating the sides.
Na Gaeil at this stage failed to increase their advantage on the scoreboard due to a series of poor shot options. Glenbeigh/Glencar substitute Dara Casey pointed frees in the 29th and 32nd minute to narrow the gap to the minimum. A Glenbeigh/Glencar player received his marching orders after a head high tackle on Jack Sheehan.
As a result Na Gaeil were awarded a free in the final minute but failed to clear their lines. The ball was intercepted by an opposing player who raced through the Na Gaeil defence and won a free. Tommy Cahill pointed from close range to level the scores.
The referee blew the final whistle after the resultant kick out. Final score: Na Gaeil: 1-07; Glenbeigh/Glencar; 0-10. While they’ll be disappointed to let victory slip from their grasp in injury time, this was a great performance from all the Na Gaeil players and substitutes introduced and they were on top for most of the game. A few unforced errors cost them in the end but they will take heart from such a positive display.
Adrian Quirke kept a clean sheet and Enda O’Connor continues to shine in the full back line. Jack Sheehan was impressive at wing back. Eoin O’Neill and Tomás O hAiniféin held their own at midfield. Andrew Barry’s powerful runs through the middle caused problems for the opposition’s defence. Dan Goggin on his return had a powerful game on the forty while Jack Bourke was very effective in the corner.

Na Gaeil B Na Gaeil were beaten by Fossa last Sunday in Division 6 of the County League, on a score line of 2 – 16 to 2 – 08. Playing with a slight breeze in the first half we put in a good shift and more than held our own over the field.
It was 0 – 04 to 0 – 04 at the first water break with our points coming from Tadhg Lynch, Jamie Loham, Declan Cooney and Jack Carmody. Fossa replied with two from play and two from frees. Our backs, Sean Duggan, Jimmy O’Sullivan and Liam Óg Kingston were very solid and kept a tight rein on Fossa.
We scored 1 – 02 in the second quarter with points from Eoghain Sheehy and Cian Devine with the goal coming from Chris Horan. Unfortunately, Chris got injured and had to go off. Fossa replied with two points from play to leave us leading at half time 1 – 06 to 0 – 06.
We failed to keep our composure in the third quarter and managed only one point per a Cian Devine free. Fossa scored 5 points all from play to leave us trailing 1 – 07 to 0 – 11 at the water break.
We chased shadows for the final quarter with Fossa scoring 2 – 05 to 0 – 01. Cian Devine pointed a free with Aaron Dewey scoring a consolation goal in the final minute. Declan Cooney and Lorcan Seymour were hard workers throughout the game for us.
U15 Last Wednesday on a glorious evening for football our U15 team played host to Ballymac. It was neck and neck for the first few minutes but then Ballymac hit us for 2 goals in the space of 2 minutes.
They led 2-03 to 0-3 at the water break. Na Gaeil needed to start the 2nd quarter well and they did just that with an inspirational goal from Sean Barrett. Both teams traded scores from there till halftime leaving the halftime score Na Gaeil: 1-07; Ballymac: 3-05. After a few positional switches by J.J. our lads hit Ballymac for 1-02 at the start of the 2nd half to lead by a point.
For the next 10 minutes it was point for point. By the 2nd water break the sides were level 2-12 to 3-09 and it was anyone’s game. The final quarter saw us 3 points ahead but back came Ballymac with another goal to level it again.
We moved a point ahead again before a great goal from Kevin O’Donoghue and a super long-range point from Jack Costello put us 5 points ahead with only a few minutes remaining. Deep into injury time Ballymac pounced for a goal but the referee blew the final whistle on the resulting kick out.

Fionn O’Brien. This team has now won three out of four games in the County League. On Wednesday July 7th they host Churchill at 7pm whichshould be another tough battle.
U13 Our U13 Green Team was away to Glenflesk on Sunday evening. After a very entertaining game they were defeated by a last minute point. Final score: Na Gaeil: 2-08; Glenflesk: 2-09. Our U13 White Team was at home to Listowel Emmets and ran out convincing winners on a score line of Na Gaeil: 3-12; Listowel Emmets: 1-0. Well done lads.
U11 Our U11 teams travelled to Listowel on Thursday where they played two fantastic games of football. They trained hard on Sunday morning in pr place on Thursday next.
Congrats Congratulations to former Na Gaeil star footballer Robert Murphy and to Maria Dowling who were married last weekend. We wish them both a happy married life together.
Good Luck We wish Jack Barry, Diarmuid O’Connor and the Kerry team the best of luck as they take on reigning champions Tipperary in the Munster semi Final in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney on next Saturday evening, July 10th.
Kerry Minors We wish the very best of luck to Oisin Maunsell and the Kerry minor team who play Roscommon in the 2020 All Ireland semi final in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick next Sunday July 11th at 2.30pm.

Clothes Collection There is now a Clothes Collection Bin situated in Na Gaeil car park for use by all members of the public.
Spectator Numbers The Irish Government on Wednesday confirmed an increase in spectator numbers at sporting events with 200 spectators allowed at Gaelic games events in the 26 Counties from last Saturday, July 3rd. This number is in addition to the official panel/backroom team allowance of 40 per team, stewards or media attendees.
