Continuing our Review of 2015, here’s some of the news we brought you in June…

• A TRALEE woman picked up a nice cheque  after winning a Radio Kerry Bingo Jackpot.

Breda Curran from Ballinorig,  dropped into Radio Kerry to collect her Radio Bingo Jackpot cheque for €14,750. (click here)

• It was reported that the Kerry GAA fundraising venture to the US grossed $1,150,000, bringing the Kerry County Board close to the €6m needed to get the Centre of Excellence and training facility at Currans off the ground.

The final net figure (less expenses) from the golf outings and special events in New York, Chicago and Boston had not been finalised at the time, but a New York Gala event grossed $850,000 on one night alone. (click here)

• It was reported that a Tralee man who played online poker on a major online betting company’s website yesterday, ended up winning a sum believed to be in the region of €390,000. (click here)

• Heartless thieves hit a charity shop for hundreds of euro and caused hundreds more worth of damage during a break-in back in June.

The Manager at Kingdom Care Charity Shop at the Mart Buildings in Mounthawk, arrived at the shop and was greeted with the awful sight. Around €200 was taken from the till, but far more damage was  caused. (click here)

• Kerry were crowned Christy Ring champions in Junebeating Derry by 1-20 to 0-12. It was a special weekend for Kerry captain, John ‘Tweek’ Griffin, who along with walking up the steps of the Hogan Stand to collect the Christy Ring Cup, brought the chalice back home to Lixnaw for the victory celebrations on the Sunday night.

“It was fantastic to be around family, friends and teammates, it’s something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives,” he told TraleeToday.ie. (click here)

• A Tralee businessman was left frustrated and angry that he had been told to apply to Kerry County Council for planning permission to change the wording of a sign outside his premises, two years after making the alteration.

Tim Galvin of Gally’s Bar And Restaurant on the Castlemaine Road, changed the sign  from ‘Gally’s Bar And Restaurant’ to ‘ Gally’s Food All Day’ about two years ago, to try to pick up extra business after the opening of the Tralee bypass. (click here)

• We told you about the Tralee chef enjoying a fantastic career in Los Angeles, which has seen him feed Oscar-winning directors, supermodels, rock gods, rap moguls and NBA stars since he moved Stateside 15 years ago.

Gavan Murphy, who grew up in Oakpark, is thriving with his company ‘The Healthy Irishman’. (click here)

Kennedy Soccer 3

The Kennedy Cup heroes come home.

• The Kerry Under 14 soccer team received a great welcome home to Tralee last night after their Kennedy Cup heroics.

Despite the driving rain, friends and families of the youngsters gathered in Denny Street to welcome the lads after they beat Dublin and District Schoolboy League (DDSL) 1-0 in the final in Limerick, to claim the title for the first time since the competition began in 1976. (click here)

• Kerry did enough to get past an ultimately disappointing Tipperary side whose challenge was snuffed out early in the second half in their Munster SFC semi-final clash in Thurles on June 14.

A crowd of over 11,000 paid in to see the All-Ireland champions set up a meeting with the old enemy Cork in early July in Killarney. (click here)

• Over €10,000 worth of damage was caused when vandals broke into the Kerry District Grounds in Mounthawk Park.

The damage was done to machinery and was a setback to the work at the new all weather pitch which was close to completion. (click here)

• A Ballymacelligott man was elected the new Mayor of Kerry County Council at Kerry County Council.

Cllr Pat McCarthy of Fine Gael man was the second Ballymac native to be elected on June 22, as Fianna Fáil councillor, Tom McEllistrim became Mayor of Tralee Municipal District that morning. (click here)

• A Tralee Dynamos player saw his hard work and talent pay off after he signed a four year contract to join English side Brighton & Hove Albion.

Sixteen year-old Rian O’Sullivan from Camp had just completed his Junior Certificate at Mercy Mounthawk, but he was off to the south coast of England. (click here)

• The Killarney Festival Of Music and Food, which was to see acts like Duran Duran and Texas take to the stage, was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the organisers’ control.

A spokeswomen for the festival at the time said: “We are devastated that the festival has been cancelled – we did everything in our power to make it happen this weekend.” (click here)
