A DOG owner whose pet was approached aggressively by another dog on the canal walk yesterday is calling on owners to keep their dogs on the leash when they see others coming towards them.

Tom Foley posted his experience on the Tralee Do You Know Facebook page yesterday and numerous other owners gave incidents of similar experiences in other areas of town in the comments section under his post.

Tom was walking on the canal with his dog Cujo and saw a woman with her pet coming towards him.

“Most people like myself, as soon as they see someone coming, leash up their dogs,” Tom told us today. “Cujo is a nervous dog – he is total opposite of the original ‘Cujo’! We were on the straight yesterday and the other owner saw us coming,” he said.

The other dog ran towards Tom and Cujo to attack the dog. Tom picked up his pet as the other dog circled him, trying to get to Cujo.

The woman was apologetic and said the dog normally never reacts that way and eventually she got dog away from them.

“I’m lucky my daughter Jazz was not with me as she would have been terrified.
I’ve no problem with people’s dogs being off the lead once they are in close proximity to them.  It’s just to keep it under control when passing others,” said Tom.

Tom said most people walking by the canal have their dogs close and when they see each other coming they leash them up. He’s just hoping that the minority will heed the warning after his experience.

Isnt the law that all dogs must be on a leash when in public . I always have my dog on a leash and we have been approached by dogs on the loose several times. Maybe this law needs to be pushed.

  2. A common issue every part of the country. Good to highlight.
