The two lurcher dogs after being rescued from the container just outside Tralee last week

MEMBERS of Animal Help Net Kerry and the Gardaí were last week involved in helping to rescue two dogs that were being kept in conditions that were described as ‘vile’ by a member of the local animal help group.

The two lurcher dogs were rescued from a derelict metal container on the Listowel Road, just outside Tralee after members of the public were alerted to the plight after hearing the howling of the dogs.

Wendy O’Connor and Jean Campbell were the two members that went to help with the rescue.

“Imagine a metal container with rotting meat, weeks of waste and turn the heat up, it was 22 degrees that day so you can imagine the smell would be very very strong. It was very vile and overpowering,” said Wendy O’ Connor of Animal Help Net Kerry when speaking to TraleeToday.ie.

“I had to walk into the container, one of the dogs fled to the back of it. It was very bad. It’s not a nice way to keep dogs. There was no ventilation, no air, no window and temperatures were rising. We informed the Gardaí, who came and oversaw the seizing of the animals,”  she continued.

“They [the dogs] were in good enough condition, they were okay. They had some remnants of food and water and they weren’t underweight, so they were okay. Whoever had them in there was minding them to  a small extent it seems, they were getting some bits of food and water,” she finished.

Gardaí are now trying to track down the people responsible.
