MINOR FOOTBALL: Well done to the Kerry Minors, including our own Dylan Casey, Ciarán O’Reilly and Michael Slattery, on their brilliant win against Derry in Croke Park yesterday (6-17 to 1-8).

What a splendid game and what a performance by team captain David Clifford from Fossa and East Kerry, scoring 4-4, with his namesake, Fiachra (Laune Rangers) scoring the other two goals.

It was Kerry’s fourth All Ireland victory in a row, a feat never achieved by any other county in the 88 year history of the competition.

Traditionalists among us will be extremely sad to see the demise of this competition that has stood the test of time and, in the opinion of many, didn’t really need tampering with.

The win and the three medals won by Ciarán, Dylan and Michael brings the Club’s Minor haul of medals to 32 since the very first ones won in that first Kerry victory in the 1931 final (played in Drogheda on the 20th September 1931).

No other county scored six goals in a final. Only one other team did it and that was Kerry when they defeated Mayo in the 1962 final (6-5 to 0-7).

David Clifford’s four goals in last Sunday’s final was almost matched by Jimmy Mahony (John Mitchels) in that 1962 final – Jimmy scored three goals on that day. And the win extends Kerry’s lead on top of the Roll of Honours to 15, four now ahead of Dublin (11 wins) and then Cork on third spot with 10 wins.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our Co. Championship venture resumes on next Saturday evening (23rd Sept) when we take on West Kerry as part of a double-header of quarter finals  in Austin Stack Park. First up it’s Kerins O’Rahillys .v. East Kerry at 4pm followed by our game at 5.45pm.

The other two quarter finals (Dr. Crokes .v. Kenmare Shamrocks at 1.30pm and Rathmore .v South Kerry game at 3.15pm) go ahead in Fitzgerald Stadium on the Sunday (24th Sept). Extra time will apply in all four games if required.

To get to this stage of the competition our first round game, against St. Kierans ended in a draw in Connolly Park (0-16 to 1-13) on 13thMay. In the replay in Scartaglin a week later we just had two points to spare (0-14 to 1-9).
