SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 0-18; Kenmare Shamrocks 2-9.

This second round of the Co. League, played in a dry, sunny Connolly Park (Nuns Field) on yesterday afternoon (25thMarch), couldn’t have got off to a worse start as we trailed by two goals inside the first five minutes. Those two Kenmare goals came in quick succession in the 3rd and 5th minutes after both sides had a point each inside the opening minute – ours coming from Ferdia O’Brien after 56 seconds, after Kenmare’s opener with just 24 seconds on the clock.

However, great credit due to our boys who regrouped quickly and for the next 23 minutes held the opposition scoreless while we went on to patiently put over point after point – seven in total – to take the lead for the first time (0-8 to 2-1) as we approached half time. David Mannix scored six of those points (four from frees and two long-ranged efforts from play). Kenmare added two points just before the break and Shane O’Callaghan added one late on to leave the sides level (0-9 to 2-3) at the interval.

The introduction of Kieran Donaghy at the start of the second half – his first game of this, his 18th  season with the Senior team – boosted our progress even more as we went on to score a further nine points during the first 19 minutes of the second half.

Kieran’s performance was simply brilliant and that was after returning home from Waterford the night before after giving a ‘Man of the Match’  performance  in Garvey’s Tralee Tigers win over Templeogue in the All Ireland Basketball Champions Trophy.

Apart from a David Mannix free two minutes after the resumption all our remaining scores in this half came from play – Mikey Collins on target twice in quick succession and then one each by Ferdia O’Brien, Shane Carroll (good to see Shane back after missing the last five games), Michael O’Donnell, Shane O’Callaghan, Darragh O’Brien and our final score of the game by David Mannix again.

There might be a little concern that we failed to score in the final ten minutes of the game while Kenmare went on to add five more points to reduce our lead to just three. But with some terrific defending we held out to the end and that still was our winning margin when referee, Donal Casey (Scartaglin) blew the final.

Team; David Hennessy, Barry Walsh, Conor Jordan, Denis Costello, Pa McCarthy, Jack O’Shea, Brandon Patterson, Shane Guthrie (Capt), Michael O’Donnell (0-1), Shane O’Callaghan (0-2), Darragh O’Brien (0-2), Fergal Ryan, David Mannix (0-8 – six frees), Michael Collins (0-2), Ferdia O’Brien (0-2).

Subs used: Kieran Donaghy (ht), Shane Carroll (38m) (0-1), John Dennis (57m).

Thanks to Terrys Butchers who provided the hot food to both players & supporters after todays game in Connolly Pk.

The Club Championship gets underway on this coming week-end. In the first of our three round robin games we play Kerins O’Rahillys in Austin Stack Park on next Saturday evening (31st March) at 6.45pm.

Our two remaining round robin games are against An Ghaeltacht, on the week-end of the 8th April and  against Dr. Crokes on the week-end of 15th April. In some publications last week we got the venues mixed up for these games. Please note we play An Ghaeltacht at home and we are away to Dr. Crokes. Apologies for the mistake.

B FOOTBALL: Knocknagoshel 1-9; Austin Stacks 2-7.

Another good win by our B team finds ourselves and Scartaglin on top of Division 5A with two wins out of two in the opening two rounds of the Co. League.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Our round 3 Town League game did not go ahead last Saturday (24th March) as we received a walk-over from John Mitchels.

As we write we understand that our five remaining round robin games (three in the Co. League and two in the Town League) are as follows:- please note some changes which have been made in recent days – Co. League away to Cordal/Scart (Thurs 5th April); Town League at home to Kerins O’Rahillys, (Fri 6th April); Co. League at home to Kilgarvan/Tuosist, (Friday, 13th April); Co. League away to Dr. Crokes, (Friday, 20th April) and Town League away to Ardfert (Friday 4th May).

BEST WISHES: to former Club Footballer, Niall Barrett (son of Tom – formerly of the Cordon Bleu Restaurant, The Square; and nephew of Eddie – our current Co. Board Delegate).

Niall, who resides and works in Munich for the past number of  years, was seriously injured in a traffic accident last week in Munich and his condition was a cause for concern for a number of days.

However we are glad to learn that he has improved in recent days and we all hope that he will continue to make a full and speedy recovery as soon as possible.

Niall appears in at least two photographs in our Centenary Book – on page 163 with a Juvenile squad in 1982 and on page 113 as part of that great B team that won the Co. Championship in 1989.
