END OF SEASON:
Minor Football: Our Minors competed in four competitions during the 2018 season reaching the finals in three – winning one, losing one and with one still to be played. Their win was in the Twon League – defeating Na Gaeil by 10-15 to 3-2. They lost in the Co. League Final – going down to Laune Rangers on a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-10. The 3rd Final, which hasn’t yet been played, is also against Laune Rangers in the Central League.
The 4th competition was the Co. Championship and for the first time this was run-off on a round robin basis with teams divided into four groups and the top two in each group qualifying for the knock-out quarter finals.
We qualified for the quarter final and had an easy win over Shannon Rangers (7-15 to 0-5) to set up a semi final clash against another divisional side, East Kerry. However in that semi final East Kerry had a double-score victory over us (3-9 to 2-3) and they later went on to win the final with another easy win over St. Kierans (1-19 to 0-9).
In all we played 16 games, winning 12, drawing one and losing 3. Many of our performances were absolutely brilliant and in those 16 games we amassed a combined total of 60 goals and 197 points.
And it’s that statistic of 60 goals that really stands out. We haven’t found any of our Club teams scoring that number of goals in any one season. The nearest was 42 scored by our Seniors during the 2003 season and that was over 26 games.
Two players who scored most of those goals were Gearóid Fitzgerald with 19 (he was top goalscorer also in 2017 with 14 to his credit) and Michael Slattery with 16. Well done boys and to the whole squad and management team for a pretty good season.
Next week we will deal with Hurling and then, finally, on the following week it’s Senior Football.
CHURCH GATE COLLECTION: A reminder that one of our Annual Fundraisers – our Church Gate Collection – takes place outside all Churches on next Saturday evening and Sunday morning (24th/25th Nov).

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions continue in the Clubhouse on every Monday and Thursday nights, commencing at 9.30pm each night.

DEATH OF WEESHIE FOGARTY: All followers of Sport were saddened to learn of the death of Weeshie Fogarty at the weekend.
The Killarney man spent a life-time in football, playing with his own Club (Legion) and his Divisional Team (East Kerry) with whom he won three-in-a-row Co. Championship titles (1968-1970), as well as an All Ireland Club Championship in 1971.
Before all that he won an All Ireland JF medal with Kerry in 1967 and in all those victories he was playing in his customary goalkeeping position (he was a sub in 1971).
When his playing days were over he became an accomplished referee and he was the man in charge on that historic day in October 1973 when we were crowned Co. Champions, bridging that 37 year gap.
Eamon Horan’s Report in the following week’s’Kerryman’ said ‘’Weeshie Fogarty was again a no nonsense referee, ensuring that the canons of good sportsmanship were observed at all times’’. Younger generations will, of course, remember Weeshie for his outstanding commentaries and analysis of games on Radio Kerry in recent times.
We extend sincere sympathy to Weeshie’s family, friends and colleagues, including his wife, Joan and children Denise, Carolann and Kieran.
