SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-11; Kerins O’Rahillys 0-14.

This postponed round 8 Co. League game, played in a sunny, if blustery Connolly Park on Saturday evening (18th June) ended all square after the visitors looked destined to take all two points after a very commanding second half.

We had a very good first half and led by 0-8 to 0-5 at the break with well-taken scores from six different players. Seán Quilter and Gearóid Fitzgerald scored two each and a point each, all from play, by Michael O’Donnell, Calvin Foley, Darragh O’Brien and Conor Horan.

We were still in command eight minutes into the second half with the same three points separating the sides after two points each. Bothof our points came from frees by Seán Quilter and Darragh O’Brien. But then O’Rahillys took complete control scoring seven points without reply during a 12 minute period to leave them four ahead at that stage (0-14 to 0-10). A pointed free in the 54th minute from Seán Quilter reduced their lead to three and then on the stroke of full time and with the last attack of the game Ronan Shanahan, who had come on as a in the 40th minute, became the hero of the hour when he burst through for a cracker of an equalizing goal.

The draw takes us to the top of Division 1 on 14 points followed by Dr. Crokes and Dingle on 13 each, with Spa and O’Rahillys in 4th and 5th positions on 12 each.

Our two remaining Co. League games are against Killarney opposition – at home to Legion and away to Spa.

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Niall Fitzmaurice, Barry Shanahan, Barry Walsh, Adam Curran, Armin Heinrich, Michael O’Gara, Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (0-1), Fiachna Mangan, Calvin Foley (0-1), Darragh O’Brien (0-2 – one free), Conor Horan (0-1), Seán Quilter (0-4 – three free), Gearóid Fitzgerald (0-2), Cian Purcell.

Subs used: Ronan Shanahan (40m) (1-0), Shane O’Callaghan (50m), Jordan Kissane (56m).

CORRECTION: The Report on last week’s SF game between Ballymac and Austin Stacks carried a blatant error. The scorer of Stacks first goal was Cian Purcell when he was at the end of a good Stacks attack to tap in to the net. I know it was a Senior match but a ‘Senior’ error of that nature is uncalled for – sincere apologies to Cian.

B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 0-10; Ardfert 0-12.

This round 10 Co. League game, played in a windy Connolly Park on Sunday afternoon (19th June) and brought forward a week to avoid clashing with the Co. SH Championship, ended with a two points victory for the visitors after they put in a very good second half performance. We played with the aid of that strong wind in the first half and went in at half time with a three points lead (0-7 to 0-4). Six of our points came from play with Conor Myers scoring three and one each from Paul Barrett, Cillian Litchfield and Jordan Kissane with our 7th coming from a Donagh McKivergan free.

With the elements in their favour Ardfert were very much in control during the second half putting over eight points to just three for our lads. Two of those came from frees by Conor Myers and Donagh McKivergan with the third coming from play by Calvin Foley.

The win keeps Ardfert’s chances of promotion to Division 3 for the coming season very much alive while we must win our final game of the season (at home to Beale) and hope that other results will go our way if we are to avoid relegation to Division 5.

Team: Ben Quilter, Ruairí O’Connell, David Burke, John Murphy, Luke Chester, Paul Barrett (Capt) (0-1), Cian Dillane, Dara Barry Walsh, Ciarán O’Connell, Shane Bastible, Gearóid Sheehan, Cillian Litchfield (0-1), Donagh McKivergan (0-2 frees), Jordan Kissane (0-1), Conor Myers (0-4 – one free).

Subs used: Calvin Foley (h/t) (0-1), Dean Rusk (47m), Shane Bastible (51m).

THE C TEAM: Austin Stacks 1-10; Kerins O’Rahillys 0-10.

A game that ebbed and flowed right up to the final few minutes, this final round of the Co. League  ended with a great finish by our lads and our first victory of the season. No more than two points separated the sides at any stage during the game until we clinched victory with almost the last kick of the game. Rahillys opened the scoring after just twenty eight seconds but two points in quick succession by David Courtney put us ahead by one inside the 4th minute. Then three consecutive points gave the visitors a two points lead by the 22nd minutes. Two minutes later David Courtney was on target again with appointed free and four minutes later the only goal of the game, by Kayden Conway after good work by Darragh Moriarty put us ahead by two points. A Rahillys pointed free on the stroke of half-time left us ahead at the break by one (1-3 to 0-5).

Right up to the 53rd minute it was point for point from both sides with the teams  level at 1-7 to 0-10 at that stage. Our four points in this half came from Kayden Conway (2) and from team captain, Evan Foley and a James Charles free. This was as good as it got for our cross-town neighbours as the remaining three points of the game came from Greg Scanlon and two super points from a free and from play by Kyle Fitzgibbon.

Team: Brian Horgan, James Quigley, Shane Greensmyth, Shane Kelliher, Craig Teahan, Conor Lowe, Evan Foley (Capt) (0-1), Kayden Conway (1-2), Joe Reidy, Dean Scanlon, Seamus Bastible, Gearóid Kilgallen, James Charles (0-1 free), David Courtney (0-3 – two frees), Darragh Moriarty.

Subs used: Enda Cahill (33m), Greg Scanlon (36m) (0-1), Tom McLoughlin (51m), Kyle Fitzgibbon (54m) (0-2 – one free), Pádraig Breen (56m).

It now looks that we have qualified for the semi-final of the competition but this has yet to be confirmed.
