MÁIRÉAD FERNANE: There was real sadness throughout the Club and the local community when news broke on last Saturday morning (15th July) of the death of Máiréad Fernane.
Máiréad and her family were steeped in Rock tradition. She herself was Vice Chair of the Club (2017-2018) during the Centenary Celebrations and took over the Chair for the 2019 season. Her Uncle, Dan O’Sullivan, was the founding Chairman of the Club in 1917 and served in that capacity for three seasons (1917-1919). Her father Garry (1915-1994) was the Club’s Juvenile President for many years and her brother Gary, who died at the young age of 44 in 1985 had a Juvenile Cup named in his honour. We extend sincere sympathy to Máiréad’s husband (Tim Guiheen), her brother, Jackie, her sister Marie and to all her extended family and friends.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently; Sandra Eastwood (nee Healy), Cahermoneen and formerly St. Brendan’s Park; Jimmy Brosnan, Cobh and formerly itchels Avenue; and John Martin, Monavalley and formerly Fethard (Tipperary).

CLUB FUNDRAISER: Please support the Austin Stacks British Open 2023 Club Fundraiser.  Hoylake outside Liverpool is the venue for this year’s tournament. A tricky assignment awaits the best golfers in the world on the notorious track and we’ve added some spice to our predictor competition also.  This year the field has been broken in two – Tier 1 WGC Top 50; Tier 2 Other Qualifiers. The challenge is to pick the six best from the two tiers over the four rounds (three from each tier). As ever the big prize is €1k with runners up prizes in the hundreds. Last year the Club installed a drainage system on the top half of the main field and revenue generated this year will be invested once again on site in the shared GAA/LGFA facilities in Connolly Park.

So this British Open Fundraiser is a big call out to our members to get behind our Club Fundraiser that tees off on Thursday week (July 20). Cards are available from the Club and Online.

This opening round of the Tralee/St, Brendans League played at a breezy Mitchels pitch on last Tuesday  (11th July) saw both sides in command at different periods of the game. We started well despite playing against the strong breeze and led by four points to three at the end of the first quarter, all four coming from play.. Pa McCarthy was on target twice with one each by Noah Townsend and Conor Myers.

Mitchels then took control, adding four points without replay as the half time approached to give then a three points lead (0-7 to 0-4). But in the closing two minutes of the half two more points from play by Pa McCarthy and a super goal by Gearóid Fitzgerald gave us a two points lead at half time (1-6 to 0-7).

Mitchels were still in the game at the end of the third quarter when they had scored a further three points to two by us (Conor Myers on target twice). We then dominated the final quarter scoring a further four points to just one for Mitchels. Donnacha Sayers was on target twice (one from play and one from a free) with Calvin Foley from play and a well-taken forty five by Conor Myers.

After the game Noah Townsend was awarded with the Celsius Mensware Man of the Match Award.
