SENIOR FOOTBALL: Kerins O’Rahillys 2-16; Austin Stacks 0-18.

On a damp Sunday afternoon  (23rd July) in Austin Stack Park we just came up short  in this Co. League Relegation play-off after the game went to extra-time. A tight first half saw Rahillys ahead by a point (0-6 to 0-5) at half-time. Michael O’Donnell scored our first two from frees inside the 7th minute. Our remaining three came from play by Donagh McKivergan (15thminute), David Mannix (23rd mn), who had just come on as a sub, and a long-ranged one in the 26th minute from Fiachna Mangan.

We had a very good opening 18 minutes of the second half, scoring a further six points to just one for the opposition. Donagh McKivergan was on target with two (one from a free), with the other four coming from four different players, all from play  – Greg Horan, David Mannix, Seán Quilter and Jack Morgan. Then in the space of two minutes Rahillys we back level with a goal and a point. And in the remaining minutes of the half both sides scored three points each to bring the game to extra time (0-14 to 1-11).

Two early points to one for Rahillys put us ahead again four minutes into added time, those two coming from Jordan Kissane and Paul O’Sullivan. But from the kick-out came what turned out to be the game-changer – a second goal for the opposition. This was followed by a point each before the second break – our point scorer Fiachna Mangan.

Rahillys extended their lead during the second half of extra time with three more points, while we just had one more from Seán Quilter and even though Kieran Donaghy had made an appearance at that stage..

Team: Michael Tansley, Colm Browne, Armin Heinrich, Niall Fitzmaurice, Paul O’Sullivan (0-1), Ronan Shanahan, Eoghan Carroll, Jack Morgan (0-1), Greg Horan (0-1), Michael O’Donnell (0-4 free), Fiachna Mangan (0-2), Jordan Kissane (0-1), Cillian Litchfield, Donagh McKivergan (0-3 – one free), Shane O’Callaghan.

Subs used: David Mannix (21m) (0-2), Seán Quilter (43m) (0-3 – 2 frees, one 45), Brendan O’Sullivan (46m), Gearóid Fitzgerald (56m), Wayne Guthrie (59m).

Subs used in added time: Colin Griffin (65m), Luke Casey (67m), Kieran Donaghy (76m).

We will now be in Div. 2 for the fourth occasion in Co. League history.

After spending the first 28 seasons (1971-1998) in Div. 1 we were in Div. 2 for two seasons (1999-2000) before going back up again for seven seasons (2001-2007).

We then spent another three seasons in Div. 2 (2008-2010) before going back up again for a further seven seasons (2011-2017).  The third occasion we were in Div. 2 it was just for one season (2018) before spending the last five seasons in Div. 1 again (2019-2023). So we will be making every effort to repeat the 2018 season and get back up to Div. 1 again for the 2025 season.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 3-16; Ballymac B  1-10.

After a good win in round 1 of this season’s Tralee/St. Brendan’s League away to John Mitchels (1-12 to 0-11) our B Team continued their winning ways at home against Ballymac B on on last Tuesday evening (18th July) with another comprehensive victory.
The man who won the throw-in was playing his first Club game of the season after a sojourn elsewhere, Wayne Guthrie, and the ball eventually landed into the path of Donnacha Sayers who goaled brilliantly after just 17 seconds. At the end of the first quarter we were ahead by 1-5 to 0-2 – Donnacha on target again with a point from play, one each from play by Ruairí O’Connell and Pa McCarthy and two by Conor Myers from a free and from play.

We put on an even better show during the second quarter adding a further two goals and six points to three for the opposition. Damien Hogan got on the score sheet now with a goal and a point with Conor Myers scoring our third goal and a pointed free, and the four other points coming from play – three from Donnacha Sayers and one from Pa McCarthy. This left us with a 15 points lead at half time (3-11 to 0-5).

Ballymac did outscore us by 1-5 to 0-5 in the second half, with three of our first-half scorers also on target again –two each by Donnacha Sayers and Pa McCarthy and one by Damien Hogan.

The Celsius Menware Man of the Match Award went to Pa McCarthy.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-12; Mid Kerry 1-9.

Cordal was the venue last week (18th July) for our opening Minor Co Championship Rd1 game V Mid Kerry. In an exciting encounter we came home with a hard fought win having led throughout. A Mid Kerry goal on the 22nd minute of the 1st half brought the game level Mid Kerry 1-4 to Stacks 0-7. This remained the score until HT. Our points coming from Paddy Lane 0-2 (0-1f), Gavin Casey 0-2, Ryan O Driscoll 0-2 & Ronan Carroll 0-1.

A Stacks substitution at HT saw club U15 Alex Tuohy replace Jake O Connor. It was nip & tuck with The sides sharing points until the 14th minute of the second half when Paddy Lane was fouled inside the Mid Kerry box & Ciaran Kavanagh duly slotted away a superb penalty into the bottom corner to give the Rock the lead 1-9 to 1-6. We retained this lead for the remainder of the game. Both teams gave it everything in this competitive game & supporters were treated to some fine scoring & defensive play right until the final whistle.

Team:  Stephen Conway, James Fisher, Donnacha Horgan, Ciaran Kavanagh (1-0 P), Sean Heaslip, Fionnan Ryan, Padraig O Halloran, Ben Murphy, Daniel Kirby 0-1, Gavin Casey 0-2, Ronan Carroll 0-2 both Frees, Thomas Deregee, Ryan O Driscoll 0-3, Paddy Lane 0-3 (2f), Jake O Connor. With runaway victories already achieved in their three round robin games of the competition our D Team continued their success with another super win in the Co. But when we came to terms with the conditions we dominated the second quarter, holding the opposition scoreless while adding a goal and five points ourselves. Our goal came from Damien Hogan with two pointed frees by Calvin Foley and a point each from play by Donnacha Sayers, Noah Townsend and David Courtney.

We continued to dominate the second half, holding the opposition to a further two points, while adding two goals and two points ourselves. Our two goals came from Jamie O’Shea and Donnacha Sayers with our two points coming from Calvin Foley and David Courtney, all four scores from play.

Team: Brian Horgan (Capt), Dean Scanlon, Joe Reidy, Ruairí O’Connell, Luke Casey,Gearóid Sheehan, Evan Foley, Calvin Foley (0-3 – two frees), Darren Bastible, Jamie O’Shea (1-0), Donnacha Sayers (1-1), Noah Townsend (0-1), David Courtney (0-2), Damien Hogan (1-0), Joe Looby.
