SENIOR FOOTBALL: For the first time in the Club’s 106 years history our Seniors will be playing outside the Senior County Championship this season.

On Saturday next (12th Aug) we travel to Listowel to meet Ballydonoghue in the first round of the Co. Intermediate Championship. Throw-in is at 7pm. Best of luck to Billy and his Management Team and to all the players who will line-out and who are on the panel.

There are 16 teams in the Intermediate Championship divided into four groups of four. As well as ourselves and Ballydonoghue the other two teams in Group 4 are John Mitchels and Desmonds. Group 1 consists of Beaufort, Glenbeigh/Glencar, Gneeveguilla and Milltown/Castlemaine. In Group 2 we have An Ghaeltacht, Glenflesk, Fossa and St. Marys. And Group 3 consists of Currow, Kilcummin, Killarney Legion and Laune Rangers.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 3-16; West Kerry 0-8.

With a three points win in the opening game of the Co. Championship against Mid Kerry (1-12 to 1-9) and the narrowest of defeats against East Kerry in round 2 (2-9 to 1-11) our Minors came good again on a shocking night – weather-wise – for football in Lispole on last Tuesday evening (1st August).

West Kerry opened the scoring inside the second minute but this was the one and only time that they were ahead in the game. We were four ahead at the end of the first quarter (0-5 to 0-1), and seven ahead at half time (0-10 to 0-3).

We extended that lead to 14 pts at the end of the third quarter (2-14 to 0-6) and at the final whistle we had a 17 points winning margin, even though the official score-line had it at 3-15 to 0-8.

All the starting 15 and the three subs used played brilliantly.

Team:  Oliver Lata, James Fisher, Donnacha Horgan, Ciaran Kavanagh ,Sean Heaslip, Fionnan Ryan, Padraig O’Halloran, Ben Murphy, Daniel Kirby, Gavin Casey, Ronan Carroll (0-7 – 2f), Cormac Bastible, Ryan O’Driscoll (1-3), Paddy Lane (2-6 – 3f), Jack Barrett.

Subs used: Alex Tuohy (44m), Rory Lynch (48m), Tomás O’Connell (54m).

Six teams now remain in the competition. Two of those – North Kerry and St. Kierans – have received byes into the semi finals while the other four are contesting the two quarter finals as we finalise these Notes on this Monday evening.

We are playing Kenmare Shamrocks in Fossa with East Kerry playing South Kerry in Glenbeigh. Check Club Website for results.

ANNIVERSARY: In his day he was regarded as one of the most outstanding Sports Journalists of all time. He was known both far and wide as PF (Paddy Foley).

He was Sports Editor of the Kerryman Newspaper for many years and their principle GAA Journalist from the day he started in August 1923 (one hundred years ago last week) until his last column 43 years later in August 1966. PF passed away later that year (6th Nov. 1966).

JOHN BARRY: And speaking of Sports Journalists/Editors what a lovely article last week in the Kerryman by our own John Barry recalling his days as a Hurler with the Rock and especially with our 1968 Co. Final game against Crotta.

John was one of the great dual players in the Club at that time and was a prominent member of those great Rock Hurling teams of the late 1960s/ early 70s who contested three Co. Finals (1968, 1969and 1974) and could have won at least one if not all three of those Finals.

And well done to Crotta as they bridged that55 year gap to win their 10th SH Co. Championship title last Sunday, winning by three points (0-15 to 1-9) against neighbours, Lixnaw.

CLUB CARDS: Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Mondays and Thursdays with the starting time of 9pm sharp. .

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is offered to the families of the following who died recently: Christina (Ciss) O’Connor (nee Moriarty), Kerins Park; and William B. Palmer, Oakpark and formerly Sneem
