Intermediate Championship Rd 3
Castleisland Desmonds 2-11 Austin Stacks 1-8
Austin Stacks started brightly and led 1-2 to 0-2 after 10 minutes; with our goal by Cillian Litchfield after 5 minutes and points both from play by Cillian and Shane O’ Callaghan, but we failed to build on that start and Desmond’s had drawn level (1-2 to 0-5) before their team was reduced to fourteen men in the twenty fourth minute.
Donagh Mc Kivergan added a point from play for Stacks but in the five-minute spell before half time Castleisland hit a purple patch and added 1-4 (3 frees) their goal coming in the 30 minute, when a high floating ball into the square was punched to the net by Ruairi Bourke to leave the HT score Castleisland 1-8 Austin Stacks 1-3.
Unfortunately, things did not improve for the Rock in the second half. After several bad wides, Shane O’Callaghan pointed two from play in the 42 min and 46 min.
Sean Quilter’s point from play in the 50th minute left just 2 between the sides Castleisland 1-8 Austin Stacks 1-6 and the large Stacks support present were hopeful of a comeback for the briefest moment.
Castleisland’s Thomas Hickey pointed from play before Cillian Litchfield scored a very good individual point from play in the 52nd minute (Castleisland 1-9 Austin Stacks 1-7). But no comeback materialised as Castleisland who had been the better team throughout added 2 more points to their tally.
Stacks Sean Quilter settled for a point from play as injury time approached. Austin Stacks try as they might could not break down the Castleisland defence who thwarted every attack and broke fast to exploit the now exposed Stacks defence who were all forward in a last-ditch attempt at an equalising goal and so it fell to Castleisland’s Luke Curtin to raise the green flag for his side’s second goal of the afternoon right on the 60th minute. The result means Austin Stacks finished 2nd in their group and have now been drawn to play a group winner, Glenflesk, away from home in the Quarter Finals this Saturday Sept 2nd at 3pm. The other QF pairings are:
Castleisland V Fossa; Kilcummin V Milltown Castlemaine and Beaufort V Legion.
The Semi Finals are set to take place on 8/9/10th Sept.

Minors: Austin Stacks Boys Minor team have been drawn away against Listowel Emmets in the Quarter Final of the Minor Club Championship. The game will be played on Saturday 9th September in Listowel with the throw in time to be confirmed
Community Support Fund: Austin Stacks Club is delighted to have received grant funding from Kerry County Council in 2023. Grants were received through the Community Support Fund for our recent Family Fun Day and the Community Enhancement Programme for the club’s electricity bills.
CLUB CARDS: Our Card sessions continue in the Clubhouse on Mondays and Thursdays with the starting time of 9pm sharp.
CLUB LOTTO: This week’s (Aug 28th) numbers drawn were 30,5,15 & 20. The jackpot was not won. The five €20 winners were Anne O’Connell, Alan O’Regan, Bridie Cronin, Niall Lucey & Gerard O’Shea. Next draw Monday Sept 4th at 730pm and the jackpot is €4,700. Your on-going support is greatly appreciated by the Club.
