Billy Ryle presented a financial gift from the proceeds of his book, “Donor Organ Transplants or Blind for the football,” to Vision Ireland, formerly National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) at Vision Ireland’s Kerry Office in Tralee. Included is Lisa Brown (Community Resource Worker, Vision Ireland) , Mairéad O’Mahony (Technology Trainer, Vision Ireland) and Billy Ryle.

A TRALEE man has donated the proceeds from the sales of his recent book to Vision Ireland, formerly National Council for the Blind of Ireland.

Billy Ryle was diagnosed with Fuchs Dystrophy in 2020. Fuchs Dystrophy is a disease which causes fluid to build up in the clear layer (cornea) on the front of the eye, causing the cornea to swell and thicken.

He underwent two separate corneal transplant operations of donated organs, the first in April 2022 and the second in November 2022, which saved his sight.

Billy detailed his journey in a book which was launched last autumn and he raised €1,500 for Vision Ireland.

“I am delighted to make a financial gift from the proceeds of my book, ‘Donor Organ Transplants or Blind for the football’, to Vision Ireland,” he said.

“I am very grateful to the two deceased donors and their families for making the organs available to restore my vision. I never thought that I would need a corneal organ donation in each eye from two different donors. The two donors bequeathed the gift of sight to me. They are forever in my thoughts and prayers,” he said.
