Deputy John Brassil.

FIANNA Fail TD for Kerry, John Brassil has said the expected job losses at the Liebherr Plant in Killarney will cause deep worry and stress for the 800 strong workforce, their families and the greater Killarney region.

It was confirmed by management at the Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. plant in Killarney this week that 27 employees are to lose their jobs this month, up to 60 throughout the month of July and a possible further 128 in August.

He said; “The extent of these phased job losses at the plant over the coming weeks cannot be underestimated. These have been important jobs in our community since the company was first established 60 years ago, and no doubt many local families will be worried for their future given the uncertainty of this announcement.

“It’s understood that there is real potential for even more job losses and that’s something I believe that every effort must be made to prevent from happening.

“Every possible measure to reduce the number of potential job losses and to minimise the impact on those affected, must be explored.

“The Government also need to ensure that every support is made available to the workers affected by this dreadful news. They will crucially need the opportunity to retrain and apply for other roles in their local community,” he concluded.
