Speaking following her selection Ms Ferris said: “It is a huge honour to be selected by members of Sinn Féin to step into this role. I have no doubt that I have very big shoes to fill to in Pa Daly but I am determined to give the people of this area the representation they deserve and have come to expect from Sinn Féin representatives.

“I understand that with this role comes responsibility and I will work with my colleagues in Sinn Féin and from across the political divide to ensure that the decisions we make are for the good of all the people.

“I want to thank the members of the party for putting their trust in me, particularly members from my own Cumann in Spa/Churchill for their nomination. I also want to pay tribute to my friend and colleague Padraig Sugrue for putting his name forward tonight.”

Deirdre is daughter of former Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris and is married to party activist Conor Foley from Tralee. She works at EF Signs.
