GARDAI are advising members of the public not to carry large animals unrestrained in the back of the car.

The warning comes after a video went viral two weeks ago of a car in the McDonalds Tralee drive-thru with a calf in the backseat.

Sergeant Tim O’Keeffe was speaking on Radio Kerry’s ‘Talkabout’ programme this afternoon and said they had received a number of calls over the past week asking if it was an offence or not.

Sergeant O’Keeffe said it is an offence, because in the event of an accident, the unrestrained animal could cause serious injury to another in the vehicle.  The driver could be charged with driving without reasonable consideration or dangerous driving and he advised motorists not to carry the animals unrestrained in the backseat.
