Events Planned For ‘World Wetlands Day’

Posted by

WORLD Wetlands Day takes place this Sunday and Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre is to mark the occasion with special events.

The day is a celebration of one of the world’s most vulnerable and yet most valuable natural habitats; it marks the adoption of the Ramsar Accord, a global treaty signed by over 150 countries that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of our fast-vanishing wetlands.

Wetlands and Biodiversity is the theme for 2020 and is a unique opportunity to highlight wetland biodiversity, its status, why it matters and promote actions to reverse its loss.

In keeping with this year’s Ramsar theme, Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre will be running events on their own patch of urban wetland right here in Tralee to coincide with World Wetlands Day 2020.

On Sunday, between 10.30am – 11.30am the Kerry Branch Irish Wildlife Trust will host a Gull Identification Workshop at the Wetlands centre.

At 3pm, Alan Balfe Educational Co-Ordinator and Wildlife Officer will host a talk and presentation on ‘Wetlands & Biodiversity’ followed by a short walk out on the urban wetlands to take a closer look at its inhabitants and biodiversity followed by an overview of Tralee Bay from the 20metre viewing tower. Don’t forget your cameras!

As part of the schools programme for World Wetlands Day 2020, the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre is offering a themed class outing for National Schools, and Transition Year Students for the week(s) 27th Jan— 9th Feb. Duration is 1½ hours and the cost is €4 per head.
